With poor weather expected for Friday, Cartersville baseball bumped their non-region game scheduled with Class 7A Lassiter up to Thursday evening to follow a regularly scheduled region game with Chapel Hill. The result was a doubleheader sweep for the Class 4A second-ranked Canes who eased past Chapel Hill 13-0 in five innings before a come-from-behind 6-3 win over Lassiter. In the opener, Cartersville scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning against Region 5-AAAA foe Chapel Hill and waltzed to a 13-0 victory. Starting pitcher Mason Barnett did not allow a hit through four innings, fanned nine, and issued only one walk. Gage Morris needed only 12 pitches to get through the final inning giving up a hit, but striking out two. Jordan Wilkie (photo) had a three hit game for the Canes. Josh Davis and J.P. Martin both contributed three RBI and two hits against the Panthers. Preston Welchel had a pair of hits that included a first inning, two-run homer. Barnett had two hits and two RBI and Ian Inaba drove in a run with one hit. Chapel Hill (6-13-1, 2-7) will host Cartersville Monday at 5:55 p.m. in the second game of their Region 5-AAAA series. In the nightcap, the Purple Hurricanes trailed 3-0 through 4 and one-half innings, but cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth and added four runs in the sixth to complete the comeback. Cartersville’s Cohen Wilbanks drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth and Welchel followed with a bases-clearing double to provide the deciding runs. Morris (3 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Logan Martin (4 IP, 3ER, 4H, 2BB, 6K). Welchel (double, 3 RBI), Kolby Adams, and Josh Davis finished the Lassiter game with two hits each. Wilbanks and Wilkie had one hit and one RBI each. Barnett forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning. The loss drops Lassiter to 9-14 on the season. Cartersville (18-4, 6-1) is scheduled to host Maryville (TN) Saturday at 12 noon.

Cass baseball lost a non-region game Thursday to visiting Darlington, 11-2. The loss was the eighth straight for the Colonels. Darlington scored five runs in the first and five more in the third inning to take a 10-2 lead and added a final run in the seventh inning for the nine-run win. The Colonels’ scored their two runs in the second inning on a pair of singles, an infield error, and a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2 at the time. Darlington pitcher Lawson Brown allowed only a pair of runs in six and two-thirds innings on six hits and two walks to earn the win. He recorded two strikeouts. Jordan Gani had two hits for the Colonels including a double. Thomas Botts, Trey Scott, Clay Means, and Sam Melton had the Cass base hits. Jayden Smith had an RBI on a sac fly. Botts (2.2 IP, 10R, 5ER, 7H, 4BB, 3K) started on the mound and suffered the pitching loss. Smith (2.1 IP, 0R, 2BB, 1K), Trey Scott (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 4K), and Gani (1 IP, 1K) also pitched for Cass. Darlington improves to 7-9-1 with their win. Cass falls to 7-13 on the season and will return to Region 7-AAAAA action Monday when 5th-ranked Kell visits the Cass Athletic Complex.

Adairsville baseball dropped an 11-0 decision at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Thursday night in Region 6-AAA action. The host Warriors took a 2-0 lead through three innings, but put the game away with a nine-run fourth inning. LFO pitcher Zac Coots held Adairsville to only four hits while tossing a five-inning, complete game. He walked two and struck out six. Four Tigers had one hit each including Levi Blackwell, Landon Ayers, Kyler Smith, and B.J. Roper. Starter Noah Nation (3 IP, 4ER, 3H, 6BB, 1K) took the pitching loss for Adairsville. Braden Powell (0.1 IP, 7ER, 5H, 2BB, 1K) and Roper (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) also took the mound for the Tigers. Adairsville (3-12, 2-7) plays at Calhoun Friday at 5:55 p.m. weather permitting.

The Woodland baseball team lost its third straight game Wednesday, falling to South Warren (KY) by a 13-4 final score at the Pine Forest Beach Blast Invitational near Pensacola, Florida. Playing as the home team, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but fell behind 5-1 before narrowing the margin to 5-4 in the fourth inning. The Spartans from Bowling Green scored twice in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 7-4 and added six more in the seventh inning. Woodland posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Spartans’ error for the 13-6 final score. Tyler Martin, Mason Day, and A.J. Isable combined for nine of the Spartans 13 hits and compiled nine RBI to lead the South Warren offense. Bailey Ward (double, RBI) and Koby Stansel finished with two hits each for Woodland. Drew Billings had a hit and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Toby Queen and Ben Ammons had the other Wildcats’ hits. Woodland (10-12) wraps up their trip to the Florida tournament with a final game on Thursday.

The Woodland baseball team was limited to only three hits by Corbin (KY) pitchers Tuesday afternoon in an 11-0, five-inning loss. It was the Wildcats’ second loss in as many days at the Pine Forest Beach Blast Invitational in Pensacola, Florida. A scoreless game until the Redhounds scored four times in the bottom of the third inning, Corbin added seven more runs to distance themselves in the fourth inning. Corbin pitcher Cam Allen tossed a five-inning, complete game and needed only 70 pitches. He struck out six while walking one. Koby Stansel (3 IP, 10R, 7ER, 8H, 4BB, 4K) took the loss in a start for Woodland. Ben Ammons (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) pitched for the Wildcats in the fourth inning. Chase Estep had three hits and a pair of RBI for the Redhounds. Peyton Addison hit a two-run home run for Corbin. Fisher Davis was stranded after a one-out double in the third inning for Woodland. Scotty Smith and Zach Wilson had the only other Wildcats’ hits. Woodland (10-11) plays South Warren (KY) Wednesday evening in Pensacola at Pace High School and will wrap up their trip with a game Thursday afternoon against an opponent to be determined.

Georgia Highlands College baseball cruised to a pair of easy wins Monday night at Emmanuel College JV in Franklin Springs winning 12-3 and 13-2. Chargers’ pitchers Zach Fordham (3 IP, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 5K) and Levi Ayers (4 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 4K) combined to limit the Emmanuel JV team to three runs on four hits in the opener while the offense compiled 15 hits. In the nightcap, GHC pitchers Anthony Reneo (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 5K), Brady Barker (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 2BB, 6K), and Skylar McPhee (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) limited the host Lions to only two runs on four hits in an 11-run Chargers’ rout. Bryson Horne had four hits in the doubleheader with a double and two RBI to pace the Chargers' offense. Trace Twardoski contributed three hits including a double, a triple, and three RBI. McPhee totaled three hits including a pair of doubles and one RBI while Austin Foster added a three-hit day with one RBI. Six other Chargers had two hits in the doubleheader including Keith Lyle who homered in Game 1 with three RBI. Willis Kemp (2 RBI), Lee Kay (two doubles, one RBI), Hunter Moody (RBI), Blake Brady, and Josh Bennett added two hits apiece in the twin-bill. Georgia Highlands (23-15) plays a home-and-home, two-game set with Wallace State CC-Hanceville Friday at LakePoint and Sunday in Hanceville, AL.

Woodland lost its first game of the Pine Forest - Adidas Beach Blast Invitational Monday afternoon in Pensacola. The Wildcats dropped an 11-6 decision to West Forsyth (GA). Woodland — playing as the home team — led 6-5 through three innings, but the Wolverines scored four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth for an eventual five-run win. The Wildcats utilized four pitchers in the tournament opener with starter Scotty Smith (3 IP, 5R, 4ER, 4H, 2BB, 3K) taking the loss. Zach Wilson (0.0 IP, 4ER, 1H, 1BB), Koby Stansel (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K), and Fisher Davis (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) also took the mound for Woodland. Wilson led the Woodland offense with a pair of hits and a walk in four plate appearances. Toby Queen had a double and three RBI. Stansel had a hit and one RBI. Ward doubled and Davis had one hit. A junior member of the Tigers’ soccer and cross country teams, Longmore has been a consistent contributor this spring as a defensive fullback and mid-fielder. “William is a leader on and off the field,” stated Adairsville boys soccer coach Jayme Laney. “I can always count on William to lead his teammates. He has a “can do” attitude and studies the game in real time to anticipate our defensive structure.” The son of William and Angie Longmore, he participates in a youth praise band and enjoys restoring and driving a 1981 Camaro. According to Laney, Longmore has encouraged and recruited other athletes within the school to join the team and shared his love of the sport with them. He carries a 3.45 GPA in Honors and AP classes with plans to go to trade school and pursue a career in aviation mechanics. Daniel Patrick Nycum is the March Elite Athlete of the Month for Woodland High School. A freshman member of the Wildcats’ golf team, Daniel has started the 2019 season as the team’s low scorer including a 38 and a 39 in nine-hole matches. “Daniel is a hard worker who works hard on his game even outside our team’s practices,” said Woodland golf coach Jonathan Cannon. “He strives to improve every day both on the course and in the classroom.” The son of Brad and Christine Nycum, Daniel is an A/B student with plans to play golf in college. He has been playing golf for six years with his dad as his primary coach. He would like to attend Georgia State University with a goal of becoming a lawyer. The March Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cass High School is Matt Shook. A sophomore infielder and pitcher on the Colonels’ baseball team, Shook has been a starter in each game this season. The son of Matthew and Stephanie Shook, he has played second and third base and is currently leading the team in batting average, runs scored, total hits, and extra base hits. Through the first 17 games, Shook has 19 hits, five doubles, one triple, 20 runs scored, and 11 RBIs. “Matt is a leader on and off the field,” said Cass head coach Tim Ayers. “He has plans to play college baseball after graduation from Cass High School.” Shook is an excellent student with a 4.0 GPA. He has a twin sister, Maddie, who is a starter for the Lady Colonels’ soccer team. Chloe Williams is the Cartersville High School Elite Athlete of the Month for March. A senior and third year starter for the Lady Canes soccer team, Williams is an outside defender and serves as one of the team’s captains. “Chloe has been instrumental in the success of the girls soccer program and invaluable this year from an experience and leadership standpoint,” said Cartersville coach Chad Murray. “Her grit and determination in games over the last three years are traits that any high school athlete should want to emulate.” “She works just as hard in the classroom,” Murray continued. “Chloe is an aspiring artist. Yantis struck out six. She then started Sunday’s game and was tagged with the loss after giving up four earned runs on five hits and two walks in the first two innings of an eventual 6-4 loss. CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (R-So., OF, Cartersville HS)… was inserted in the lineup to play left field Sunday and had a two RBI double in a pair of plate appearances during an 8-6 home loss to Lander University. He was also 1-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored last Tuesday in a start at Newberry lost by the Jaguars, 10-9. In a busy week, Augusta won two of five games. LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… went 4-for-10 in a three-game Gulf South Conference sweep of visiting Lee University over the weekend. Griffith hit his second home run of the year in Friday’s 7-5 win. He had two hits including a double and two RBI Saturday in a 14-10 win and added one hit plus a sac fly RBI in an 11-3 win on Sunday. West Georgia (16-17, 11-9 GSC) hosts Paine College Wednesday and travels to Miles College Thursday in a pair of non-conference games this week. KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (Fr., LHP, Woodland HS)… entered in the fifth inning Sunday and retired seven outs in the Hawks 11-4 loss at University of West Florida in Pensacola. Jinks allowed four runs (only two earned) on three hits, one walk, and one hit batsman. He struck out three. The southpaw has a 5.40 ERA in six appearances and just over eight innings pitched this season. Shorter picked up one win in three games against the Argonauts and also lost a home, mid-week game with Emmanuel College last Tuesday. The Hawks (17-15, 10-10 Gulf South Conference) travel to non-conference Carson-Newman University Tuesday afternoon and will host a three-game conference series with Auburn-Montgomery Friday and Saturday. HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (So., RHP, Cartersville HS)… made two no-decision appearances last week for the Skyhawks. He went six innings and allowed only one earned run on five hits and a walk last Tuesday in a 5-2 loss at Toccoa Falls College. He stuck out seven in the non-conference loss. In a relief appearance Saturday, Osborn went four and one-third innings yielding one unearned run on six hits and two walks during a 12-6 Appalachian Athletic Conference loss to NAIA 14th-ranked Bryan College. He fanned four. Point (24-13, 8-7) hosts Reinhardt University for a three-game AAC series Friday and Saturday. MASON ROBINSON — Louisiana Tech (R-Sr., OF, Woodland HS)… was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI Friday in the Bulldogs’ home win over UAB. He was hitless in Louisiana Tech’s other three games during the week — a home loss to UL-Monroe and two additional wins over Alabama-Birmingham. Robinson has a .330 batting average with three homers and 19 RBI in 27 starts this season. Louisiana Tech (17-10, 5-4 Conference USA) hosts McNeese State Wednesday night in a non-conference game and entertains UT-San Antonio this weekend in a three-game C-USA series. TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (R-Sr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… started all four games for the Mountain Lions last week and was 3-for-8 at the plate with a solo home run in Saturday’s second game win over Georgia Southwestern. He drew eight walks in the four games and scored six times as Young Harris won three of four. Smith is hitting .300 in 24 games and 90 at-bats this season with two home runs and 14 RBI. YHC (22-11, 10-6 Peach Belt Conference) plays at Emmanuel College Wednesday in a non-conference game and hosts PBC leader University of North Georgia this weekend in a three-game series. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… went 8-for-18 with three doubles, a home run, and a pair of walks at the plate as the Mountain Lions went 3-1 for the week. The home run was a first inning grand slam Saturday in an eventual 20-3 home win Saturday over Georgia Southwestern. With the productive week, Washington raised his season batting average to .317 with eight RBI in 60 at-bats. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON -- Villa San Martin (Argentine League, Excel Christian Academy) ... Robinson had one great game and one subpar performance, as Villa San Martin went 0-2 for the week. He had eight points, two rebounds and two steals in a 95-77 loss on Wednesday to San Isidro. Robinson bounced back Friday with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and eight rebounds, but his team still came up short in a 77-72 defeat to Tiro Federal. COLLEGE BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS -- University of Kentucky (Fr., Cartersville native) — Hagans saw his freshman season end in disappointment with a 77-71 overtime loss to Auburn in the NCAA Tournament's Midwest Regional final on Sunday in Kansas City, Missouri. The Cartersville native scored 10 points, including five of the Wildcats' 11 overtime points, but it wasn't enough to punch a ticket to the Final Four. Hagans had five rebounds and three assists but also was forced into seven turnovers. He finished with just four points and three rebounds in the Sweet 16 against Houston on Friday. However, Hagans sank a pair of key free throws to give Kentucky a one-point lead with 2:08 to go in a 62-58 win. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER -- Ball State (Sr., Cartersville native) ... Gollhofer finished off the week with a 3-1 record, including a 2-0 mark in singles action. She produced a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory on Line 3 singles in Friday's match against Miami-Ohio. However, Gollhofer and Isabelle Dohanics fell 6-3 on Line 3, as the Redhawks won the doubles point to help secure a 4-3 win. On Sunday, Gollhofer won on Line 2 singles 6-2, 7-5 and paired with Dohanics on Line 3 for an easy 6-0 triumph. Ball State won the match by a 5-2 score over Bowling Green to improve to 13-4 on the year and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference. TRACK AND FIELD Trevor Knowles TREVOR KNOWLES -- Albion College (So., Woodland HS) ... Knowles wound up fourth in the high jump and 10th in the triple jump during the Augustana Viking Olympics on Saturday in Rock Island, Illinois.

The Georgia Highlands College baseball team swept a much needed doubleheader Saturday winning at South Georgia State CC 5-0 and 4-3 in extra innings. With the two wins, Georgia Highlands earned a split in the four-game conference series with the Hawks and stayed in the upper half of the GCAA conference standings. It was a day of quality pitching for Georgia Highlands. Chargers’ pitcher Jacob Meyer (photo, 7 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 8K) tossed a complete-game two hitter to shut out South Georgia in the opener. He fanned eight. In the second game, starter Stevie Szucs (5 IP, 1ER, 6H, 1BB, 5K) and Logan Ward (4 IP, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 5K) combined to limit the Hawks to three runs on ten hits while combining for ten strikeouts. Trace Twardoski (photo, #13) hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth of Game 2 for the deciding run. Bryson Horne hit a two-run home run in the first inning of Game 1 to get the Chargers’ day started offensively. Horne finished with three hits and three RBI in the first game. Willis Kemp, Skylar McPhee (RBI), Twardoski, and Blake Brady (RBI) had two-hit days. Alex Marquand, Hunter Moody, and Keith Lyle added one hit each in the doubleheader. South Georgia is now 17-16 for the season and 7-7 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association standings. Georgia Highlands (19-15, 7-8) plays a doubleheader Monday at Emmanuel College JV, hosts Wallace State-Hanceville (AL) Friday afternoon, and then plays at Wallace State-Hanceville Sunday afternoon.

The Cartersville boys golf team won the 22-team Central-Carroll Lions’ Invitational Saturday with a 17-shot victory over second place Metter. The Canes fired a team score of 307 (+19) with Metter at 324 (+36) and Woodward Academy placing third at 339 (+51). Rome (341, +53), Brookwood (342, +54), Allatoona (348, +58), Riverwood (347, +59), Bremen (355, +67), Pace Academy (355, +67), and North Paulding (356, +68) rounding out the top ten. Buck Brumlow led the Canes and was tournament medalist with a round of 72. He was followed by teammates Carson Harris (74), Dalton Henson (79), and Camden Meadows (82).

The Cass girls soccer team completed their region schedule Friday night with an important 4-2 Region 7-AAAAA win at Kell. The Lady Colonels scored three first half goals in the opening 13 minutes. Lupita Pineda gave Cass a 1-0 lead off an assist from Leidi Toribio in the game’s fourth minute. Toribio followed with a goal of her own in the 12th minute off a Maddie Shook feed, and Logan Vermaas assisted Shook for her first goal of the season one minute later. Following Spring Break week, Paulding County — who beat Cass earlier in the week 3-2 — can end the Lady Colonels’ playoff hopes with a win over either Woodland or Hiram. The Lady Colonels (6-6, 4-4) will return to action April 9 with a non-region match at Class 7A North Paulding. Later in the evening on Friday, the Cass boys (4-9, 2-6) lost to Kell 5-1. The Longhorns improved to 5-1 in the region and 6-6-1 for the year.
