Georgia Highlands scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday afternoon for a come-from-behind win over visiting Cleveland State CC at LakePoint in Emerson. Pitcher Trace Twardoski picked up the win by working a scoreless top of the eighth. Logan Ward came on in the ninth to strike out the side to earn a save. Zach Fordham (5 IP, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 8K, photo) started on the bump for the Chargers. Anthony Reneo (1 IP, 0R, 0H) and Skylar McPhee (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) also worked an inning of relief. McPhee hit a two-run homer in the second inning and finished with two hits and a pair of runs scored. Travis Sands also homered and had two hits. Lavoisier Fisher doubled and added one RBI in his two hits. Blake Brady added an RBI double. Austin Foster (RBI) and Bryson Horne had the other Chargers’ hits. The win improved the Chargers early season mark to 5-1. They play a three-game series this weekend against Walters State CC with a single game Saturday afternoon and a doubleheader Sunday.

Last February, GHSA Executive Director Dr. Robin Hines made the announcement that Georgia would add a high school wrestling state championship. In fact, the GHSA becomes only the seventh state nationally to have a girls wrestling state championship competition. Hines also included in his announcement that he expects to see additional females compete in the sport in coming years. The four local high schools with wrestling programs will have participants this year in the inaugural competition with Cartersville High School leading the way. The Lady Canes will have eight wrestlers in the Class 4A Section A tournament at West Laurens High School while Adairsville, Cass, and Woodland will each have one female wrestler at their respective State Sectionals. The Cass boys soccer team opened its 2019 campaign Tuesday night at Heritage-Catoosa by blanking the Generals, 4-0. Carlos Perez had a hat trick on the night and Javi Duarte scored the Colonels’ fourth goal. Magno Moreno and Moises Pajarito each had an assist. Isai Romero recorded four saves in goal to earn the shutout. The Lady Colonels soccer lost a close match at Heritage 2-1. The only goal for the Lady Colonels was scored by Logan Vermaas with an assist from Maddie Shook. Both Cass teams travel to Southeast Whitfield for matches Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Cass girls punched their ticket to the state tournament Tuesday night by defeating Kell in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament quarterfinals at Carrollton, 49-35. Alexis Ware led the Lady Colonels with a double-double that included 18 points and 10 rebounds. Payton Stoddard also reached double figures with 10 points. Sharia Wade tossed in five points while Claire Davis, Londaisha Smith (photo), Ariana Hames, and Amber Brittian each added four points. Cass led 9-7 after one quarter, 26-21 at halftime, and 33-24 after three quarters on their way to the 14-point victory. Kya Williams led the Lady Longhorns with 12 points. Kell’s season ends with an 11-15 record. The Lady Colonels (21-5) will now play in region semifinals Thursday night at 4 p.m. against No. 2-seed Carrollton at Villa Rica High School. The region championship will be Saturday night at 7 p.m. The region third place game will be at 4 p.m. Both of those games will also be at Villa Rica. ROME 70, CASS BOYS 69 The Cass boys had their season come to an end Tuesday night with a one-point loss to Rome in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament quarterfinals at Kell High School. In a back-and-forth battle between two teams that split games during the regular season, Rome led 21-16 after a fast-paced opening quarter before the Colonels rallied in the second period to lead 35-33 at halftime. The score was tied at 52 at the end of the third quarter with Rome squeezing out a 70-69 win in the end. Senior Jacquez Fountain (photo) led Cass with 31 points in his final game. Justice Hayes followed with 11 points. Jordan Ford contributed nine points. Ethan Carter had seven. Braxton Benham and Zaylan Chaney added six points apiece. Caleb Byrd led Rome with 33 points. Justin Ingram added 12 as the Wolves secured a state tournament berth. Rome (16-10) advanced to the region tournament semifinals Thursday at Villa Rica High School. Cass had its season end with a 13-13 record. LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 64, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 37 The Adairsville girls were eliminated from the Region 6-AAA Tournament Tuesday night at Ringgold with a 64-37 loss to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The Lady Tigers led 24-22 at halftime, but were outscored 22-11 in the third quarter and never recovered. Macey Gregg and Milijah Williams paced LFO with 25 and 21 points, respectively. The Lady Warriors (11-15) advanced to the region quarterfinals Thursday night to face 4th-seeded Sonoraville. Adairsville (6-21) was led by 10 points from Coriana McDaniel (photo). Havyn Isaac and Nakiyah Washington tossed in eight each. RINGGOLD 50, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 42 The 8th-seeded Adairsville boys had their season come to a close Tuesday night in a 50-42 loss to host Ringgold at the Region 6-AAA tournament. Ringgold (12-14), seeded 5th, advances to a Thursday night quarterfinal matchup against Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. Adairsville finished the year with a 9-18 record.

The Georgia High School Association’s Wrestling State Sectionals will be conducted at multiple site across the state this weekend, February 8-9. Woodland and Cass will both be in the Class 5A Section A tournament at Union Grove High School; Cartersville will be in the Class 4A Section A tournament at West Laurens High School; and Adairsville will participate in the Class 3A Section A tournament at Jefferson High School. The top eight finishers in each weight class bracket in Class 5A and Class 4A will advance to the state finals in Macon February 13-16. Survive and advance is the theme in February as high school basketball reaches the post season region tournaments and Monday night two local girls teams did just that. The Cartersville girls advanced with a win over Chapel Hill and the Adairsville girls defeated Haralson County. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 36, CHAPEL HILL 22 The Lady Canes outscored Chapel Hill 11-4 in the second period Monday night in their region tournament play-in game and never trailed again in a 36-22 victory at LaGrange. The win advances Cartersville to a quarterfinal game Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at The Storm Center with the opportunity to advance to the region semifinals and a berth in the state tournament. The Lady Canes led 15-8 at halftime and 24-16 after three quarters on their way to a 14-point opening round win. Haley Johnson and London Shaw (photo) paced Cartersville (12-13) with eight points each. A’mya Davis had six points and four assists. Naijah Evans also dropped in six points. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 50, HARALSON COUNTY 39 The Adairsville girls took control early and advanced to the second round of the Region 6-AAA tournament at Ringgold with a 50-39 win over Haralson County Monday night. The Lady Tigers raced to a 19-6 advantage in the first eight minutes and led 30-14 at halftime before pushing their lead to 39-24 after three quarters. Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 14 points. Coriana McDaniel and Alexa Varner followed with nine each. Havyn Isaac (photo) scored eight. Breeana Wilson and Lori Cimino added four apiece. Indiya Smith and Katherine Bridges led the Lady Rebels with 11 and 9, respectively. Haralson County finished the season with a 5-18 record. Adairsville (6-20) advances to play 5th-seeded Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Tuesday night at Ringgold at 7 p.m. MT. ZION-CARROLL 91, EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 69 The Excel Christian boys had their season end Monday night at home in the opening round of the Region 6-A tournament with a 91-69 loss to Mt. Zion-Carroll. The host Eagles trailed 23-12 after one quarter, 50-32 at the intermission, and 73-48 after three quarters. Josiah Mosley had a game-high 31 points to lead Excel. Rayshawn Womack knocked down 13 points before leaving with an ankle injury. Kalil Holley added 11 for the Eagles. Jacob Day contributed seven points. Evan Lee and Trippe Anderson rounded out the Excel scoring column with five and two points, respectively. Breon Henderson led Mt. Zion with 25 points. Ty Farley followed with 20. JD Hindsman and Kendrick Brownlow both added 14 points as the visiting Eagles improved to 15-10. Mt. Zion-Carroll advances to play at No. 4-seed Gordon Lee Tuesday night at Trion High School. Excel Christian finishes the year with a 4-21 record. HIRAM 82, WOODLAND BOYS 72 The Woodland boys were eliminated from the Region 7-AAAAA tournament Monday night with an 82-72 overtime loss to host Hiram. The Wildcats overcame a 24-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but the Hornets pulled away in the extra session at the free throw line making 10 of 12 attempts. Dawson Wilkins led Woodland with a game-high 26 points. Hunter Johnson followed with 21 for the Wildcats. Hiram (11-15) advances to face top-seeded Kell Tuesday night at Kell High School. Woodland’s season ends with a 4-21 overall record. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 60, HARALSON COUNTY 28 The Adairsville boys won an opening round game in the Region 6-AAA Tournament Monday night, 60-28. The Tigers (9-17) advance to play host Ringgold Tuesday in the second round. Haralson County's season ends with a 5-18 mark. EAST PAULDING 64, WOODLAND GIRLS 52 The Woodland girls had their 2018-19 season end Monday night in the play-in game of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament. The Lady Cats lost 64-52 to East Paulding in the game played at Hiram High School. East Paulding (4-21) must now face top-seeded and undefeated Villa Rica Tuesday in the region quarterfinals. Woodland's season ends with a 1-23 record.

HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (Soph., RHP, Cartersville HS)… worked 5 and one-third innings allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks as the Skyhawks completed a three-game sweep of University of Pikeville (KY) at LakePoint in Emerson. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Sr., Cartersville, GA, Laurel Springs Academy)… won her Line 3 singles match over Lisa Khamassi 6-4, 6-1 and paired with teammate Isabelle Dohanics to defeat Elvira Esteo and Lucia Zagar as the Cardinals won 6-1 over Youngstown State Saturday at home. Ball State (3-1) hosts Eastern Illinois Universitiy this Saturday afternoon. TRACK AND FIELD ANNA HIGHTOWER — Georgia Tech (Sr., Cartersville HS)… placed 14th at the University of Michigan Power Five Invitational Saturday by clearing 11 feet, seven and three-quarter inches. TREVOR KNOWLES — Albion College (Soph., Woodland HS)… placed fourth in the triple jump Saturday with a leap of 43 feet, one and three-quarter inches at the Midwest Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University. SWIMMING JORDAN BALDWIN — Life University (Fr., Woodland HS)… placed 19th in the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries (2:35.34) and 25th in the 100-yard backstroke preliminaries (1:08.30) at the Mid-South Conference Championships. KATIE LAWHORN — Life University (Jr., Adairsville HS)… was 33rd in both the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries (31.18) and the 100-yard freestyle preliminaries at the Mid-South Conference Championships. The Woodland wrestling team won the Region 7-AAAAA championship Saturday and qualified 12 individuals for next week’s state sectionals to lead an impressive day for Bartow County wrestling programs. The Wildcats had eight individual region champions and finished 82.5 points ahead of second place Kell. Adairsville also had a dozen wrestlers to qualify for sectionals in Class AAA, while Cartersville in Class AAAA and Cass in Class AAAAA will advance ten individuals each. In all, the four Bartow County teams advanced 45 individual wrestlers to the State Sectionals. Cartersville and Adairsville finished the day with two first-place winners each and both teams were region runners-up. Cass had three first-place winners and finished third in Region 7-AAAAA. The Cartersville girls and boys dropped their final Region 5-AAAA regular season games of the season Saturday night at Troup County. Both teams will play in the region tournament next week with the Lady Canes playing in a play-in game Monday and the Hurricanes needing a quarterfinal win Wednesday night at home to earn a state tournament berth. TROUP COUNTY 38, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 37 The Lady Canes ralied late on the road, but were edged by Troup County 38-37. Troup led throughout but was ahead only 11-8 after one quarter, 17-15 at halftime, and 30-25 through three quarters. The Lady Canes had their chances, but made only nine of 16 from the charity stripe. Amber Gilbert led Troup with 17 points including eight-for-eight at the free throw line. Anna Palmer scored 15 for the Tigers (16-7, 9-3). Naijah Evans led Cartersville with 10 points — all in the second half. Haley Johnson (photo) and Ariana Cochran scored six points each. Cartersville (11-13, 3-9) finished sixth in the Region 5-AAAA standings and must now face Chapel Hill on Monday in a play-in game for the region tournament. TROUP COUNTY 56, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 50 The Canes limited home-standing Troup to only six points in the fourth quarter Saturday night, but failed to recover from a double-digit deficit in a 56-50 loss to the Tigers. The win locked up a state tournament berth for Troup County who finished as the Region 5-AAAA 2-seed and dropped the Hurricanes to the No. 3-seed. Cartersville led 18-14 after one quarter, but Troup took a 36-30 advantage at halftime and extended their lead to 50-37 after three quarters. Perignon Dyer (photo) led the Hurricanes with 15 points. Isaac Gridley followed with 14. Cartersville (13-12, 7-5) will now host the region quarterfinals Wednesday night at The Storm Center with the Canes playing in an 8:30 p.m. game against the 6-seed vs. 7-seed survivor from a play-in game Monday night.

Each of the five local high school basketball teams in action Friday night lost their final regular season games. Each will begin region tournament action next week. MURRAY COUNTY 66, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 48 A disastrous third quarter doomed the Tigers Friday night in Chatsworth as Murray County topped Adairsville 66-48. Adairsville stayed close in the first half and only trailed 31-25 at the intermission, but the host Indians outscored the Tigers 23-7 in the third period on their way to an 18-point Region 6-AAA win. Bronson Bowen and Haden Newport paced Murray with 25 and 23 points, respectively. Danarous Johnson led Adairsville with 12 points and Connor Crunkelton added 10 for the Tigers. Murray County finished the regular season 12-13 overall and 7-9 in region games. Adairsville (8-17, 6-10) will the the 8-seed in next week’s region tournament. MURRAY COUNTY 55, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 25 The Murray County girls extended a 22-14 halftime lead to 42-18 after three quarters Friday night to eventually defeat the visiting Lady Tigers, 55-25. Allison Weaver led Murray County (10-15, 7-9) with 25 points. Coriana McDaniel had seven points for Adairsville. Havyn Isaac and Nakiyah Washington finished with four points each. Adairsville (5-20, 2-14) begins next week’s Region 6-AAA tournament as an 8/9-seed and will open against Haralson County. BOWDON 67, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 56 The host Eagles led after one quarter 16-14, but Bowdon took control in the second quarter to take a 36-23 advantage by halftime and led 48-39 after three quarters. Chris Parker poured in 35 points to lead the Red Devils. Rayshawn Womack led Excel with 20 points. Evan Lee and Josiah Mosley followed with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Kalil Holley added nine and Brenden Quillin finished with two points. Bowdon closed out the regular season with a 12-13 overall record and was 5-9 in Region 6-A. Excel, who will host a region tournament game Monday night, completed the regular season 4-20 and was 1-13 in region play. VILLA RICA 65, WOODLAND GIRLS 19 Villa Rica completed an undefeated 25-0 regular season Friday night with a 65-19 home win over Woodland. Ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAA, Villa Rica will be the top-seed in next week’s Region 7-AAAAA tournament. Woodland finished the regular season with a 1-22 overall record and was 1-15 in region play. VILLA RICA 70, WOODLAND BOYS 55 Villa Rica pulled away from Woodland in the third quarter Friday night by outscoring the visiting Wildcats 21-9 in the quarter on their way to a 15-point Region 7-AAAAA win. Villa Rica (11-13, 6-10) held leads of 15-13 after one quarter and 28-26 at the intermission. Woodland (4-20, 1-15) will be the 9-seed in the region tournament. Villa Rica will be the 6-seed.
