Thursday following the announcement that he would be leaving for a college football assistant coaching position, Cartersville High School head football coach Joey King met with Matt Santini of WBHF to discuss his departure. CLICK THIS LINK TO LISTEN TO THAT INTERVIEW Coach King compiled a 67-4 record in five seasons at Cartersville where his teams won two state championships, appeared in four state title games, and won the region championship all five years. King is a native of Cedartown. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Carson-Newman University in Tennessee; and master’s degree and Education Specialist degree from Jacksonville State University. Cartersville High School was his first head coaching position after serving as an assistant previously at Carrollton, Sonoraville, and Jacksonville State. Superintendent Marc Feuerbach, Principal Shelley Tierce, and athletic director Darrell Demastus stated Thursday that they would have a plan in place within days to select King’s successor.

Making up games moved from this past Tuesday night due to school cancellations, the Woodland girls and boys dropped Region 7-AAAAA contests on the road Thursday evening at Carrollton. The Lady Trojans won the girls matchup 48-24 and the Carrollton boys took the nightcap, 62-50. CARROLLTON 48, WOODLAND GIRLS 24 De’Mauri Flauney led Carrollton and all scorers in the game with 20 points while teammate Keninde Obasuyi added 13 as the 9th-ranked Lady Trojans prevailed over Woodland Thursday night, 48-24. Carrollton, who has secured the No. 2-seed heading into the region tournament, trailed Woodland 5-4 after one quarter before taking an 18-9 lead at halftime. The Lady Trojans extended their lead to 30-14 after three quarters on their way to a 24-point win. Madgie Robinson led Woodland with seven points. Carrollton improved to 18-6 overall and 13-2 in region play. Woodland (1-21, 1-14) finishes the regular season Friday night at top-ranked and undefeated Villa Rica. CARROLLTON 62, WOODLAND BOYS 50 The host Trojans took a 24-17 lead after one quarter Thursday night and never trailed in securing a 62-50 Region 7-AAAAA win over visiting Woodland. Carrollton (15-8, 12-3) is currently deadlocked with Paulding County in a race for the No. 2-seed in next week’s region tournament. The Trojans have a home date with East Paulding Friday night while Paulding hosts region-leader Kell. Thursday night, Carrollton led Woodland 36-25 at the intermission and maintained that lead through three quarters at 49-38 on their way to a 12-point victory. Melvin Edwards led Carrollton with 21 points. Marcellious Lockett and Jeff Hodges followed with 16 and 10 points, respectively. Dawson Wilkins (photo) scored 17 points for Woodland. Cartersville High School head football coach Joey King announced to his team Thursday morning that he will be leaving the Canes’ program to take a Division-I college assistant coaching position. King, who will become a receivers coach in his new position, will make the announcement regarding his new college program on Monday. He has also recommended his current defensive coordinator and Cartersville alum Conor Foster be named the new head coach of the Hurricanes. Superintendent Marc Feuerbach was contacted by WBHF’s Kevin Pate for his remarks on King’s departure and the school system’s plans for hiring a new head football coach. King, who reached 50 wins faster than any coach in Georgia high school football history, compiled a 67-4 record in five seasons at Cartersville with the Canes winning state titles in 2015 and 2016. King’s teams reached the state semifinals four times and was region champion all five seasons. He also owns the best win percentage of any Georgia high school coach with a minimum of 25 games at the helm. The Cartersville girls and boys basketball teams celebrated their senior night Wednesday night at The Storm Center with Region 5-AAAA wins over Chapel Hill, while the Cass girls picked up a valuable road win in Region 7-AAAAA. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 43, CHAPEL HILL 31 On senior night at The Storm Center, the Lady Canes won a Region 5-AAAA matchup with Chapel Hill, 43-31. Seniors A’mya Davis and London Shaw (photo) led Cartersville with 11 and eight points, respectively. Classmate Emily Petty also saw significant playing time. The loss dropped the visiting Lady Panthers to 7-16 for the season and 1-10 in region action. Cartersville (11-12, 3–8) closes out the regular season Saturday afternoon at Troup at 3:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 79, CHAPEL HILL 75 Perignon Dyer poured in 29 points while Kolbe Benham and Isaac Gridley each scored 15 as the Purple Hurricanes beat Chapel Hill 79-75. The Lady Colonels sprinted to a 17-3 lead after one quarter, led 34-15 at halftime, and were up 46-30 after three quarters on their way to an 18-point win. Amber Brittian (photo) led Cass with 16 points. Londaisha Smith scored 12 and Sharia Wade knocked down 11 points. Payton Stoddard and Alexis Ware had eight points each. Claire Davis finished with five and Ariana Hames added three points. Sydney Jones led Hiram with 16 points. Imani Smith scored 10 for the Lady Hornets (12-13, 7-8). Cass (20-5, 11-5) will finish in a third-place tie in Region 7-AAAAA with Rome if the Wolves win Friday at Hiram. A tie would force a coin toss to determine the 3-seed and 4-seed for the region tournament. If Cass is the 3-seed, the Lady Colonels will play Tuesday at Carrollton against either Hiram or Kell. If they become the 4-seed, Cass will play Tuesday at Villa Rica against either Hiram or Kell. HIRAM 61, CASS BOYS 58 The Colonels suffered a tough, three-point road loss at Hiram Wednesday night in their regular season finale’ falling 61-58. Cass had a potential game-tying three-point shot to miss at the buzzer. “We didn’t shoot it well,” said Cass coach Sean Glaze. “It also wasn’t our best effort defensively. We have some work to do before next Tuesday.” The game stayed close throughout and was tied at 14 at the end of one quarter. Hiram led 33-27 at halftime and was up 46-42 heading into the final period. Nate Presnell, the Hornets’ 6-9 senior forward led all scorers with 26 points. Javyen Brown added 14 for Hiram. With the weather forecast calling for potential snowfall and schools closed for Tuesday, many high school basketball teams around the area pushed their Tuesday scheduled games back to Monday night in order to prevent cancellations. As a result, three local teams played Monday night with the Adairsville Lady Tigers picking up their second region win of the season. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 38, HARALSON COUNTY 37 The Adairsville girls collected their second region win of the season Monday night at Haralson County in a come-from-behind effort, 38-37. “We took the lead and held them off with a solid 19-second defensive stand at the end to win it,” said a pleased Lady Tigers head coach Michael Roberson. Haralson County led 7-5 after one period, 16-12 at halftime, and 29-24 after three quarters before Adairsville rallied to go ahead down the stretch. Nakiyah Washington (photo) led the Lady Tigers with a game-high 18 points. Havyn Isaac knocked down eight points. Aaliyah Applin contributed six. Coriana McDaniel, Breeana Wilson, and Alexa Varner rounded out the scoring with two points apiece. Katherine Bridges led the Lady Rebels with 13 points. HARALSON COUNTY 51, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 50 In a back-and-forth battle throughout Monday night, the Adairsville boys suffered a disappointing Region 6-AAA loss at Haralson County, 51-50. The host Rebels led 11-7 after one quarter, 21-19 at the intermission, and were up 38-35 heading into the final quarter. Haralson County improved to 5-16 overall and 3-12 in region action. Adairsville (8-16, 6-9) closes out the regular season Friday night at Murray County with a chance to finish as high as fifth in the region heading into the post-season tournament. CHRISTIAN HERITAGE 88, EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 58 Nash Bingham led five Christian Heritage players in double figures with 17 points as the Lions won at Excel Christian Academy Monday night, 88-58. The win kept Christian Heritage within striking distance of first place North Cobb Christian in the Region 6-A standings. The visiting Lions led 18-10 after eight minutes, held a 56-24 lead at halftime, and were up 78-43 after three quarters on their way to the 30-point win. Hightower cleared 11 feet, 5 and 3/4 inches. Next for Georgia Tech is the University of Michigan Invitational this Friday and Saturday. TREVOR KNOWLES — Albion College (So., Woodland HS)… placed second in both the triple jump and high jump Saturday as his team finished third at the six-team Baldwin Wallace University Team Challenge. Knowles’ high jump cleared 1.95 meters and his triple jump was 13.24 meters. The next meet for the Britons will be Saturday at the Indiana Wesleyan University Midwest Classic in Marion, Indiana.

The Adairsville, Cass, and Woodland swim teams competed Saturday at the 2019 Metro Atlanta Swim and Dive Championship at Westminster School in Atlanta. On an evening when senior Payton Stoddard was celebrated for eclipsing the 1,000 point scoring mark for her career, the Cass Lady Colonels took care of business against visiting Chattahoochee, 65-32, in a non-region tilt. Cass took a 17-7 lead after one quarter, led 34-16 at the intermission, and extended the lead to 58-24 after three quarters against the Class 6A Lady Cougars. Sharia Wade scored 13 points, Alexis Ware had 12, and Londaisha Smith finished with 11 points in the Lady Colonels’ balanced scoring attack. Claire Davis contributed nine points for Cass. Amber Brittian had four. Payton Stoddard, Taryn Callahan, and Ariana Hames posted three each. Abby Stoddard, Sylvia Wade, and Justice Bennett contributed two points each. Makyera Baldwin added one. Taylor Mikolajczak led the visiting Lady Cougars with 16 points. Rachael Ashadele added nine as Chattahoochee slipped to 3-20 on the year. Cass (19-5, 10-5) has secured a top-four seed in the upcoming Region 7-AAAAA tournament, but could move up to third with a win Tuesday at Hiram. SANDY CREEK 85, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 53 The visiting Patriots remained unbeaten in Region 5-AAAA Saturday with an 85-53 win over Cartersville at The Storm Center. Sandy Creek took a 10-point lead at halftime, 36-26, before Cartersville narrowed the margin in the third quarter to 53-47. The Patriots (19-3, 9-0) then took fire in the fourth quarter with some hot shooting and outscored Cartersville 32-6 in the period for a 32-point win. Despite the loss, the Hurricanes remain one-half game ahead of Troup for second place in the region behind Sandy Creek. Cartersville (12-11, 6-4) hosts Chapel Hill Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. and will travel to Troup next Saturday. SANDY CREEK 60, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 27 The Sandy Creek girls kept their unblemished region mark intact Saturday at The Storm Center with a 60-27 Region 5-AAAA win over Cartersville. The Lady Patriots improved to 18-4 on the season and 9-0 in region action. Cartersville (10-12, 2-8) closes out the regular season in the coming week with a home game Tuesday against Chapel Hill at 6 p.m. and a road trip to Troup County on Saturday.

All four of the local high school girls basketball teams suffered region losses Friday night. LAKEVIEW-FT. OGLETHORPE 47, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 29 The Adairsville girls were outscored 20-6 in the third quarter Friday night to break open a close game in a 47-29 home loss to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The visiting Lady Warriors were up 21-12 at halftime, but led after three quarters 41-18. Milijah Williams led LFO with 23 points. Anna Rountree added 20 for the Warriors. Nakiyah Washington paced Adairsville with 12 points. Coriana McDaniel added six. LFO improved to 9-13 overall and 6-8 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (4-19, 1-13) travels to Haralson County Tuesday night for a 6 p.m. tip and plays at Murray County Friday night. HIRAM 48, WOODLAND GIRLS 27 Sydney Jones led Hiram and all scorers with 18 points while Erial Owens added 13 for the Lady Hornets as they defeated Woodland Friday night 48-27. Riley Jaussi and Madgie Robinson led Woodland with six points each. Hiram evened its season and region marks to 12-12 and 7-7. Woodland (1-20, 1-13) travels to Carrollton Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start and plays at Villa Rica next Friday night at 6 p.m. VILLA RICA 67, CASS GIRLS 40 Top-ranked Villa Rica (22-0, 13-0) beat Cass for the second time in seven days to remain undefeated on the season. The loss for the Lady Colonels was also their third in their last four games. Cass (18-5, 10-5) hosts Chattahoochee in a non-region game Saturday at 3 p.m. before closing out the regular season Tuesday at Hiram. LAGRANGE 50, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 46 (OT) The visiting Lady Canes caught LaGrange in the fourth quarter Friday night, but suffered an overtime loss to the Lady Grangers, 50-46. LaGrange led 10-5 after one quarter, 21-18 at halftime, and 36-33 at the end of three quarters, but Cartersville won the final period of regulation 13-10 to send the game to an extra four minutes tied at 46-all. Cartersville failed to score in the overtime period and lost by four points. Zaria Russell and Chaqueive Robinson led the Lady Grangers with 16 and 13 points, respectively. London Shaw led the Lady Canes with 12 points. A’mya Davis followed with 11. Jamiya Moore tossed in six points. Lehla Thomas finished with five. Kierra Milline and Naijah Evans scored four points apiece while Haley Johnson added three. LaGrange improved to 11-11 overall and 3-6 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (10-11, 2-7) entertains region-leading Sandy Creek at The Storm Center Saturday at 3 p.m.
