The Adairsville boys basketball team salvaged a win in their finale' at the Rockmart High School Georgia Nylon and Thread Shootout Saturday afternoon by defeating Bremen, 53-44. Both teams had dropped their first two tournament games with the Tigers falling to Rockmart and Thomson the previous two nights before topping the Blue Devils. Bremen held a first quarter lead of 8-7, but Adairsville took command by halftime 26-16 and extended their lead to 37-24 through three quarters. Mason Boswell led Adairsville in the scoring ranks with 20 points. Denarous Johnson followed with 14 points for the Tigers. Savaun Henderson totaled eight. T.J. Printup contributed six. Connor Crunkelton and Diego Perez rounded out the Tigers’ scoring with three and two points, respectively. Griffin Crook led Bremen (3-6) with 14 points. Adairsville (5-8) will host the Adairsville Ace Hardware Christmas Clash December 27-29 with the Tigers opening the first round against Excel Christian Academy.

The Cass boys lost their semifinal game at the Georgia Nylon and Thread Shootout at the Rock Friday night, falling to the Cherokee Warriors 67-50. The Colonels stayed close deep into the third quarter and had the Cherokee lead cut to two points, but the Warriors pulled away in the final stanza for a 17-point victory and a trip to Saturday’s tournament finals. Cherokee led 14-11 after one quarter, 28-24 at halftime, and 44-39 at the end of the third quarter. The Warriors (6-5) were led by Taihland Owens’ 30 points. Zack Vickers added 10 points for Cherokee. Jacquez Fountain scored 19 for Cass. He was followed by Jordan Ford with nine points. C.J. Pipkin scored eight, Zay Jackson five, Andrew Glaze scored three, Zaylan Chaney two, and Justice Hayes and Ethan Carter both scored one point. Cherokee will play Furtah Prep in Saturday's championship game at 8:30 p.m. Furtah Prep defeated Rockmart 65-57 in Friday's late semifinal game. Cass (6-8) will play in the tournament’s third place game Saturday at 5:30 p.m. against Rockmart. THOMSON 76, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 50 In a consolation round game at the Rockmart High School Shootout at the Rock, the Adairsville boys lost to Thomson 76-50. The Bulldogs improved to 9-2 with their victory and will play in Saturday afternoon's consolation finals against Cedartown. For Adairsville, it was a fourth-straight loss. The Tigers are now 4-8 for the year and will play Bremen in another consolation game Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Rockmart High School.

The Adairsville boys were edged by host Rockmart Thursday night at the Georgia Nylon Thread Shootout at The Rock, 51-48 in a first round game. The Yellow Jackets led at each quarter break, but the score was close throughout the night. Rockmart led 15-12 after one period, 28-26 at halftime, and 40-37 through three quarters before holding on to that advantage for a three-point victory. Juke Boozer led Rockmart with 19 points. Mason Boswell had a game-high 20 for the Tigers. Denarous Johnson followed with 15 points for Adairsville. Malachi Garder contributed six. Savaun Henderson had three points and Conor Crunkelton added two. With the win, Rockmart -- who recently added some football players to their roster after a state finals run -- improved to 2-4. The loss was a third straight for Adairsville (4-7). The Tigers play a consolation game Friday night at 8:30 p.m. against Thomson and will have another consolation game on Saturday to close out the tournament.

Adjustments at halftime are always key in any sport during a highly competitive game. Thursday night at the Georgia Vinyl Thread Shootout at the Rock hosted by Rockmart High School, the Cass boys obviously made some of the right moves. The Colonels trailed 21-17 after one quarter and held a narrow 35-30 lead at halftime, but outscored Cedartown 20-9 in the third quarter to take a 55-39 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Cass then held off the Bulldogs down the stretch for a 69-62 first round win to advance to Friday night’s tournament semifinals against the winner of Thursday night’s late game between Bremen and Cherokee. Zahquan Frazier led Cedartown with a game-high 20 points. M.J. Holiday added 13 for the Bulldogs. Cass was led by Justice Hayes (photo) with 15 points. Jacquez Fountain and Jordan Ford both added 12. DARLINGTON 57, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 39 The Cartersville boys lost a consolation game at the Rome Holiday Tournament Thursday night at Berry College, falling to Darlington 57-39. J.D. Hall scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to lead Darlington. Andrew Land added eight for the Tigers. Darlington (5-4) led at each quarter stop. The Tigers were up 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, 28-24 at halftime, and 40-31 after three periods before easing away for an 18-point win. Perignon Dyer paced the Canes with 20 points. He was followed by Amarai Orr with nine points. Manny Hayes, Robert Novak, and Marqual Coaxum scored three each. Austin Cauffman added one point. Cartersville (2-6) will look to bounce back against Calhoun at The Storm Center Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Cass swim team competed in an eight-team meet Tuesday evening at Darlington with the Lady Colonels coming away with a third place finish and the boys placing fifth. Woodstock won the girls competition with Dawson County placing second. The Coahulla Creek girls were fourth with Darlington, Southeast Whitfield, and Model rounding out the girls’ standings. On the boys side, Woodstock won with Darlington, Dawson County, Southeast Whitfield and Cass rounding out the top five ahead of Model, Coahulla Creek, and Coosa. Highlights for the Cass teams included a win by Eli Wilhoit in the boys 100-yard butterfly. He was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that placed second. Levi McCrary, Solon Harris, and Griffin Howard joined Wilhoit on that relay squad. Wilhoit, Harris, Howard, and Jackson Jones were the Colonels’ 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed fourth. The Cartersville boys basketball team lost a semifinal matchup with Rome 67-52 Wednesday evening at Georgia Highlands College as part of the 65th annual Rome Holiday Tournament. The Canes reached the semifinals by knocking off Coosa on Monday 75-72, but the Class 5A Wolves pulled away in the second half Wednesday to reach the tournament’s championship game Thursday night at Berry College. Rome led 17-16 after one quarter and held a 32-26 advantage at the intermission. The Wolves extended their lead to 47-38 after three quarters and went on to prevail by 15. Caleb Byrd led all scorers in the game with 31 points for Rome. Jaylen Nelson and Justin Ingram also reached double figures for the Wolves with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Rome (5-3) will face either Model or Darlington in the tournament finals Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. at Berry College. Senior Perignon Dyer led Cartersville in the scoring column with 14 points. The Wildcats held a 17-14 lead after one quarter and the two teams were tied at the intermission, but Coosa took a 51-34 lead in the third quarter. Woodland came back to challenge in the final quarter, but the Eagles held on for a four point win. Kenan Dixon led Coosa (5-4) with 16 points. Sean Brown followed with 12. Hunter Johnson had a game-high 23 points to lead Woodland. He was followed by Dawson Wilkins with 15, Jaylen Ballard with 11, Peyton Roberts with nine, and Justice Carter wtih four points. The Cartersville girls edged Woodland 32-31 Tuesday night at Georgia Highlands College in a consolation game of the 65th annual Rome Holiday Tournament. The win by the Lady Canes was a second of the season over the Lady Cats. The two teams met December 1 at Woodland with Cartersville coming out on top, 48-36. Tuesday night Woodland led 4-3 after a low-scoring first period, but Cartersville held leads of 15-12 and 24-22 at the next two quarter stops before holding on for their one-point victory. Kierra Milline led Cartersville with nine points. Ariana Cochran followed with six. Naijah Evans and Lehla Thomas scored four each. Haley Johnson, London Shaw, and A’mya Davis (photo) added three each for the Lady Canes. Madgie Robinson had a game-high 14 points to lead Woodland. She was followed by Ansley Evans with five points. The Cass girls and boys basketball teams made a clean sweep of visiting Adairsville Tuesday night. The Lady Colonels took the opener 67-29 and the Colonels won a back-and-forth battle with the Tigers, 63-56. CASS BOYS 63, ADAIRSVILLE 56 The Cass boys took a double-digit lead only to have Adairsville rally late and take the lead before the Colonels pulled away down the stretch for a 63-56 win Tuesday night at Cass. In fact, the Colonels held the Tigers scoreless over the final three minutes to secure the non-region win. Cass raced out to a 22-9 lead after the first eight minutes, but the Tigers answered to narrow the margin to 31-30 at halftime. Adairsville took the lead in the third quarter 47-46 before the two teams traded leads through much of the final period. CASS GIRLS 67, ADAIRSVILLE 29 The Cass girls stormed to an early 23-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in taking a 67-29 win at home Tuesday night over visiting Adairsville. The Lady Tigers were basically playing without their leading scorer, Nakiya Washington. She came off the bench for a few minutes in the first half, but was ineffective and sat the remainder of the contest. Washington injured her ankle last Saturday and simply had not recovered for Tuesday’s game. Cass led 38-18 at halftime and extended the lead to 57-23 through three quarters. The Cartersville boys are settling into their full roster for the 2018-19 season now that the football season has concluded. On Monday night, the infusion of some new faces helped Cartersville snap a four-game skid with a 75-72 victory over Coosa at the Rome Holiday Tournament. The Canes led 25-22 after eight minutes, held a 44-34 lead at the break, and maintained a 61-51 advantage before holding off the Eagles in the fourth quarter. Rome led 10-6 after one period and 25-18 at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter. The Lady Wolves outscored Woodland 18-3 in the third period. COOSA 42, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 38 The Lady Canes struggled in the first half Monday night and despite a late run lost to Coosa 42-38 in the opening round of the Rome Holiday Tournament. “We had our share of chances,” said Lady Canes head coach Cindy Moore. “We just never got in position to take the lead after playing poorly in the first half. Add to that, we were only 9-for-20 at the free throw line.” Cartersville was only down 14-11 after one quarter, but failed to score in the second period to trail 24-11 at halftime. Coosa maintained a 37-24 lead after three quarters and then held on for the win although the Lady Canes outscored the Eagles 14-5 over the final eight minutes. Nayja Millsap and Gracie Shumate led Coosa (2-7) with 12 points each. Kaylee Clayton chipped in eight points. Arianna Cochran led Cartersville with 10 points.
