Vic Beasley had one tackle in Monday night’s 23-20 win over the New York Giants at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Falcons led 10-3 at halftime and took a 20-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Giants scored a pair of touchdowns in the final three minutes. A Giorgio Tavecchio 56-yard field goal with just under two minutes remaining between those two New York touchdowns made the difference. Tavecchio was signed this week by Atlanta for injured kicker Matt Bryant. Beasley, an Adairsville native, heads into the Falcons’ bye week with a total of six tackles, one sack, and one pass defended through the first seven games. Atlanta’s first round choice in 2015 (8th overall) out of Clemson, Beasley’s Monday night stop gives him 101 tackles in his four-year career. Atlanta (3-4) is currently in fourth place in the NFC South behind division-leading New Orleans (5-1), Carolina (4-2), and Tampa Bay (3-3). The Falcons, who are winless on the road this season, return to action Sunday, November 4 at Washington and follow that with a road game at Cleveland on November 11. Former Cartersville High School basketball standout A.J. Mosby was selected Saturday in the second round of the 2018 NBA G-League Draft (36th overall) by the Northern Arizona Suns. The 6-3 guard was a Second Team, All-Southwestern Athletic Conference player at Alcorn State in his final two collegiate seasons. He was also a former All-Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association player for Chattahoochee Tech. Following his senior season as team captain at Alcorn State, Mosby was named Second Team HBCU All-America after leading the Braves in scoring, assists, steals, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage. He netted 27 double-figure scoring games in 2017-18 including six, 20-plus contests. On the season, Mosby averaged 15.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in 32.2 minutes per outing with a 1.9 assist:turnover ratio. He helped the Braves lead the SWAC in assists per game with 13.1 as a team. Mosby shot .400 from beyond-the-arc which ranks third all-time in Alcorn single-season history and .866 from the free throw line which ranks second in the school's single-season record book. He completed his junior college career as Chatt Tech’s all-time leading scorer and while at Cartersville High helped lead the Canes to their best single-season record in history at 27-2. The 27-team NBA G-League is the official minor league for the NBA. The league plays a 50-game regular season schedule that runs through March 23. The regular season is followed by a four-round, 12-team playoff format Northern Arizona opens its season this Saturday afternoon at the UCLA Health Training Center in Los Angeles against the South Bay Lakers at 3 p.m.

The Cartersville volleyball team opened the 2018 Class 4A State Tournament at home Saturday with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-11 win over Madison County. With the straight sets victory, Cartersville advances to the Round of 16 to face Lafayette Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at The Storm Center. Lafayette also swept on Saturday, defeating White County 25-22, 25-18, and 25-23. “Madison came out and played a tough match,” said Lady Canes’ head coach Dutch Cothran. “They are relatively young, so I expect them to be a solid team into the future.” Cartersville took early leads in each set and was able to build leads throughout the day. “We did a good job keeping ourselves out of high-stress situations,” noted Cothran. “We were able to sustain a three or four point lead most of the match before pulling away near the end of each set.” Cothran was pleased with his team’s overall performance. Nedu Evans had 14 kills, eight digs, and two service aces. Bekah Stevens contributed nine kills and six digs. Grace Hunter (photo above) had 32 assists and three aces. Anna Mathis added 10 digs, while Anna Grace Brock (photo below) had six kills, seven digs, and three aces. “Our serve receive could be better, but I am happy with a win and the opportunity to extend our season.” Cothran added. Following the victory, Cothran briefly looked ahead at his Lady Canes’ second round opponent. “I feel like we match up well with Lafayette. They are a good team, so I would expect Wednesday to be a tightly contested battle.”

Cartersville overpowered Chapel Hill Friday night 51-0 to set up a defacto region championship game at Weinman Stadium November 2 against Troup. The win kept the Hurricanes undefeated as they head into a late-season bye week. Adairsville also won big Friday night. The Tigers stopped winless Murray County 34-6 and will play for a .500 season next week at Ringgold. Woodland led Villa Rica at halftime, but yielded three quick touchdown runs in the third quarter in a 36-8 loss. Cass kicked an early field goal at Kell, but that lead was short-lived in a 63-3 defeat of the Colonels. CARTERSVILLE 51, CHAPEL HILL 0 Tee Webb threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as the Hurricanes blanked Chapel Hill in Douglasville Friday night, 51-0. Marcus Gary had a four-yard, first quarter touchdown run and Evan Slocum added a pick-six at the end of the first quarter as Cartersville took a 14-0 advantage. In the second period, Webb connected with Devonte Ross twice (32- and 41-yards) and Marquail Coaxum on a 49-yard touchdown strike as Cartersville built a 35-0 lead at the break. With Evan Slocum engineering the offense at quarterback in the second half along with freshman Brynen Wilkins, Quante Jennings (photo) added a pair of fourth quarter touchdown runs to extend the lead to 49-0. The second Jennings score was set up by a fumble recovery by Sunni Moorehead. A late safety accounted for the Canes’ final points. Gary finished with 110 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Jennings rushed for 32 yards and two touchdowns on eight attempts, and Ross led the receiving corp with 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns on four receptions. Chapel Hill slips to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (9-0, 4-0) will enjoy a bye week before hosting Troup (8-0, 3-0) November 2. That game will be for the region championship regardless of Troup’s outcome next Friday at Central-Carroll. ADAIRSVILLE 34, MURRAY COUNTY 6 Mason Boswell (photo) was part of three touchdowns and Malachi Gardner scored twice as the Adairsville Tigers defeated visiting Murray County Friday night, 34-6. Boswell had a five-yard first quarter touchdown run to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. He also added a 55-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and a 60-yard touchdown pass to Gardner in the third quarter. Gardner blocked a Murray County punt in the end zone and then recovered it for a touchdown that gave Adairsville a 20-0 lead at the intermission. The Indians only points came on an 80-yard fumble recovery return for a score in the third quarter by Cade Petty that made the score 27-6 at the time. For Adairsville, Boswell was 6-for-7 passing for 98 yards. He also rushed for 108 yards on ten attempts. Gardner had two receptions for 66 yards and a score. Courtney Slocum ran for 49 yards on five carries. Michael Cook rushed for 47 yards on eight attempts. Savaun Henderson scored a touchdown and had 32 yards rushing, and Conner Crunkleton carried three times for 18 yards. Murray County remained winless at 0-9 overall and 0-5 in Region 6-AAA. VILLA RICA 36, WOODLAND 8 Woodland led 8-7 at halftime, but Villa Rica scored three rushing touchdowns in just over eight minutes in the third quarter to pull away, 36-8. Michael Hanson returned a punt 60-yards to give Villa Rica a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but Woodland went ahead on a 15-yard touchdown run by Titus Jones (photo) and a two-point conversion pass from Jones to Dylan Forman. Both teams blocked 37-yard field goal attempts in the first half and Villa Rica turned the ball over on a pair of fumbles. In the fateful third period, Dushante Holloway had a 31-yard touchdown run. Phillip Zachery scored on a 17-yard dash, and Mecose Todd had a scoring run to put Villa Rica ahead, 29-8. Noah Best added a fourth quarter score for Villa Rica on an eight-yard keeper. Woodland fullback Justice Carter led the Wildcats with 83 total yards. KELL 63, CASS 3 Cass drove into the Longhorns’ red zone in the first quarter but settled for a Kaleb Speights field goal to take an early 3-0 lead at Kell. Unfortunately for Cass, the Longhorns responded with 63 unanswered points to hand the Colonels their eighth straight loss. Evan Conley tossed three touchdowns passes for Kell and the Longhorns got rushing touchdowns from B.J. Abson, Isaiah Cruz, and Roy Barrett. Conley’s scoring throws went to La’vaughn Dabney, Cam Bell, and Jaylon Brown. Kell also scored on a fumble returned for a touchdown and a 30-yard pass from Corbin Lafrance to Jamal Hill. Conley finished the night with 166 passing yards and 76 on the ground contributing to four touchdowns. Abson added 79 yards rushing for the Longhorns. Thomas Gilliam finished with 51 rushing yards for the Colonels. Kell moved to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (1-8, 0-7) has a bye week before closing out the 2018 season November 2 at home against Paulding County.

The Woodland Lady Cats’ 2018 season came to an abrupt halt Wednesday night at home as they were swept by visiting Buford in a Class AAAAA state playoff doubleheader. Woodland, the Region 7-AAAAA champions, fell to the Wolves in the best-of-three series 13-0 and 6-3. With the two second round playoff wins, Buford (17-10) advances to the state final eight-team, double-elimination portion of the state tournament in Columbus for the 14th consecutive year. She struck out four and walked one in earning the four-inning shutout. Woodland did not go quietly, however, in the second game. The Lady Cats tied Game 2 at one run apiece in the third inning and then went ahead 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning. Buford responded right away, however, with a three-run fifth to regain the lead. The Wolves went on to add an insurance run in the sixth inning to punch their ticket to Columbus. Buford pitcher Kaitlyn Pickens (5 IP, 3R, 1ER, 7H, 0BB, 4K) picked up the second game win, but it was Hollifield (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) again who entered to close out the final two frames. Woodland’s Madi Bentley (photo, 6 IP, 6R, 5ER, 9H, 6BB, 2K) kept the Cats in the game, but suffered the loss. Morgan Cooper, Skylar Chappell, and Duck all had two hits in the nightcap for Woodland. Caroline Higdon and Bella Carnes added one hit and one RBI apiece. Morgan Bailey also drove in a run. Buford was paced offensively in the two games by Hannah Morgan and Shea Bayreuther. Those two Wolves combined for seven hits and 11 RBI on the night. Woodland’s season comes to a close with a 24-9 record.

Cartersville Country Club golf professional Bill Hassell tied for third place this week at the Georgia PGA Professional Championship earning one of six spots from the event at the 52nd PGA Professional Championship, April 28 - May 1, 2019 at Belfair in Bluffton, South Carolina. Hassell fired rounds of 69-76 for a 4-over-par 145 total and it will be a debut appearance for Hassell in the PGA Professional Championship. Kyle Owen, head PGA professional from Dunwoody Country Club, won the Georgia tournament held at Barnsley Resort in Adairsville with a 1-under-par 143 total. Owen held off defending champion Paul Claxton by a single shot. Hassell was one of three players tied for third place at +1 over par 145 which included Robby Bruns of Augusta National Golf Club and Sonny Skinner of Sylvester, GA. Rounding out the Georgia PGA qualifiers was Matthew Sanders of Oak Mountain Golf Club in Carrollton who earned the final spot in a on the first playoff hole over J.P. Griffin of Capital City Club in Atlanta. They both tied for 6th place at +2 over par 146. The PGA Professional Championship will mark its first visit to the Belfair. The Championship brings together a field of 312 contestants representing the PGA of America’s 41 nationwide Sections. Belfair, featuring the Tom Fazio-designed East and West Courses, will host the 2018 U.S. Open local qualifying tournament; and was the site of the 2013 South Carolina Open; and the Players Amateur (2000-11), which featured past Champions Ben Curtis, Rickie Fowler, Bill Haas and Brian Harman. The PGA Professional Championship, carrying a $550,000 total purse this year, is broadcast (all four rounds) by Golf Channel. Following 36 holes of play, the field will be trimmed to the low 90 scorers and ties, and following 54 holes of play, the field will be trimmed to the low 70 scorers and ties. The low 20 scorers in 2019 will earn berths into the 101st PGA Championship, May 16-19, 2019, at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.
