The Woodland girls won and the Woodland boys were runner-up Saturday at the 2018 Ridge Ferry Cross Country meet in Rome. McKenna Trapheagen (1st, 18:27) of the Lady Cats also won the individual title and was followed by teammates and top-ten finishers Angela Cochran (2nd, 18:53), Rylee Evans (4th, 19:12), Carli Clymer (5th, 19:19), Baylee Evans (8th, 19:25), and Cheyenne Spinks (9th, 19:52). According to Woodland girls' coach Matthew Landolt, the Lady Cats ran the fastest team time in school history and Trapheagen also set a new school record. The 27th annual race in Rome attracted 30 girls high school teams and 30 boys high school teams that included 215 girls runners and 263 boys competitors. The Lady Cats had six runners place in the top nine as they dominated the competition. Woodland finished with 20 points and outdistanced second place Etowah (55) by 35 points. River Ridge was third, followed by host Rome and Calhoun to round out the top five. In the boys race, Kennesaw Mountain edged the Woodland boys by only three points. Sequoyah placed third, followed by Gilmer and Rome. The Wildcats were led by John Shropshire who placed tenth (17:11). He was followed by teammates Dylan Stermer (14th, 17:30), John Forsyth (26th, 17:56), Reece Mitchell (34th, 18:14), Kobe Cochran (38th, 18:20), Patrick Bollwerk (55th, 18:41), and McKinley Chappell (79th, 19:07). Woodland will host the Run at the Rock Invitational on Saturday, September 1 at Woodland High School.

The Woodland softball team had their five-game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon in a one-run, home loss to South Paulding, but the Lady Cats did pick up the only local wins in the Buccaneer Bash hosted at fields across the area by Allatoona. Saturday’s results: SOUTH PAULDING 3, WOODLAND 2 The Lady Cats out hit visiting South Paulding 8-7, but came up short where it matters falling 3-2 in Woodland’s final game of the Buccaneer Bash. The loss snapped a five-game win streak for Woodland. Both teams scored single runs in the first inning. South Paulding then took a 2-1 lead in the second inning before Woodland tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth. The Spartans’ go-ahead run, however, came in the bottom of the fifth for their 3-2 victory. Katelyn Munoz (7 IP, 2R, 1ER, 8H, 0BB, 2K) was the winning pitcher for South Paulding. Haiden Farmer had two hits for the Lady Spartans. Madi Bentley (4 IP, 2ER, 4H, 7BB, 2K) started in the pitching circle for Woodland and was tagged with the loss. WOODLAND 8, BRUNSWICK 2 Saturday morning, the Lady Cats won their fifth-straight by defeating visiting Brunswick as part of the Buccaneer Bash games played at Woodland High School. Woodland led 2-0 after one inning and extended to 7-1 through four frames. Both teams added single runs in the sixth inning. Sarah Baynard (7 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K) was the Lady Cats’ winning pitcher with a complete-game effort. Ansley Evans went 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Morgan Bailey was also 3-for-4 with one RBI and scored two runs. Bella Carnes (RBI), Hannah Miller, and Morgan Cooper contributed one hit apiece. Woodland finished 3-1 in tournament games this weekend. Woodland (6-5, 2-2) returns to Region 7-AAAAA play Tuesday at Villa Rica at 5:55 p.m. and will host Rome Thursday before playing in the Bartow County Championship Tournament Friday and Saturday. SONORAVILLE 2, CARTERSVILLE 0 In Cartersville’s first of two games Saturday played at Kennesaw Mountain High School in the Buccaneer Bash, the Lady Canes were shutout for a third straight game. This time it was the Sonoraville Phoenix who limited Cartersville to a lone single by AnnaKate McElhaney in the top of the fourth inning. Sonoraville (10-0) took advantage of a pair of Cartersville errors and one hit for the game’s only two unearned runs in the third inning. ALEXANDER 8, CARTERSVILLE 2 Cartersville and Alexander battled in a 2-2 tie until the Cougars struck for six runs in the top of the seventh inning Saturday to pull away for an 8-2 win over the Lady Canes. Alexander took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but Cartersville scored twice in the fifth to knot the game 2-2. Colbi Ballard (5 IP, 7ER, 8H, 5BB, 2K) ) pitched into the seventh inning, but suffered the pitching loss for the Hurricanes. AnnaKate McElhaney (1 IP, 1ER, 1H) retired the final three outs. Presley Edwards had two hits including a double. AnnaKate McElhaney doubled and added two RBI. Hope Short, Emma Frothingham, Cio Seigler, Lauren McElhaney, and Rylie Harris contributed one Cartersville hit each. The Lady Canes (5-6, 3-3) host Darlington Monday at 5:55 p.m. and will play in the Bartow County Championship Tournament Friday and Saturday. BAINBRIDGE 13, CASS 0 Cass fell behind early Saturday morning and never recovered in a 13-0 loss to Bainbridge at home as part of the Buccaneer Bash. The visiting Bearcats banged out 11 hits in their four-inning victory and improved to 8-0 on the year. Meanwhile, the Lady Colonels managed only two hits — one each by Kailia Carson and Haley Owens. LOVETT 12, CASS 0 The Lady Colonels’ Saturday afternoon game of the Buccaneer Bash was over almost as soon as it started. Lovett scored 12 times in the top of the first inning and blanked Cass on the day for a 12-0 decision in four innings at Cass High School. Haley Smith walked and had one of the Colonels’ three hits. Haley Owens and Maggie Collum had the other Cass base hits. Cass (1-7, 1-3) returns to Region 7-AAAAA play Tuesday at home against Hiram.

Senior quarterback Rett Moore (photo left) capped off three Cass scoring drives as the Colonels won their season opener at home Friday night over Adairsville, 19-10. For Cass, the opening night victory was the team’s first since September 16, 2016 and snapped a 16-game losing streak. Adairsville slipped to 1-1 on the season with their loss following a season-opening 21-20 win last week at home against Chattooga. The Tigers, who played most of the night without all-around athlete Mason Boswell, led 7-0 early on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Derrick Simmons to Malachi Gardner. Kicker Chris Rodriguez added the PAT kick with 8:32 remaining in the opening quarter. On the Colonels’ second possession of the game, Moore capped a 60-yard drive with a one-yard scoring run. Key runs by sophomore Zay Jackson and Malik Grimes spurred the drive that narrowed the Tigers’ lead to 7-6 after Kaleb Speight’s PAT kick missed hitting the goal post upright. The first quarter ended with an Adairsville turnover. Nathan Gant picked off a Simmons pass at the Colonels’ 42 yard line, but Cass was unable to advance. About mid-way through the second quarter with the Colonels in a third and long situation, Moore scooped up a bad snap and made a nice run to keep a drive alive. Jackson followed with a 23-yard run to the Adairsville 20, and Moore connected with Jacquez Fountain to the 10-yard line. A penalty moved the ball to the Tigers’ five yard line where Moore powered in for his second score of the night and a 12-7 Colonels’ lead. A two-point coversion attempt failed with 7:05 remaining in the first half. Adairsville put points on the scoreboard to end the half using a series of short passes by Simmons who finished the night with 145 yards through the air. The Tigers utilized quality clock management on the drive against a Cass prevent defense. The Tigers methodically drove to the Cass 20-yard line and Rodriguez was successful on a 38-yard field goal to reach the intermission with Cass leading 12-10. The two teams exchanged turnovers in a scoreless third quarter, but Cass ended the period in the midst of a scoring drive at the Adairsville one-yard line. A key run by Jackson and a pass from Moore to Fountain put the Colonels in scoring position at the six yard line. From there Moore carried on three straight plays, including the first play of the fourth quarter for his third touchdown of the night on a one-yard run. This time, Speights was true on the PAT kick and Cass led 19-10. The two teams traded multiple possessions in the final quarter, but Cass put a seal on their victory late in the game. The Colonels took possession at their own 35-yard line with 4:42 remaining in the game and drove to the Tigers’ two yard line as the clock ticked to 0:00. In the drive, Moore had a completion to Fountain for a first down at the Adairsville 44 yard line and Thomas Gilliam had an impressive run to the Adairsville 10-yard line. Three Moore runs later the game clock expired. Moore rushed for 72 yards and three touchdowns. He was also 10-of-13 for 139 passing yards including a perfect 8-of-8 in the second half. Jackson rushed for 94 yards on 11 carries. Fountain finished with seven catches for 121 yards. Cass (1-0) travels to Cumming for a non-region matchup with the Forsyth Central Bulldogs next Friday at 7:30 p.m. Adairsville (1-1) is idle next week and will host Region 6-AAA foe Coahulla Creek September 7.

Woodland softball won twice Friday night to extend their current win streak to four games as they hosted Coffee and Armuchee as part of the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash. The Lady Cats edged Coffee 7-6 in nine innings and overpowered Armuchee 12-0. Three Woodland pitchers contributed from the circle in the extra inning win. Lainey Baker (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 3BB, 2K) picked up the win in relief of starter Sarah Baynard (5.2 IP, 5R, 0ER, 6H, 3BB, 2K) and Hope Schultz (0.1 IP, 1BB). Skylar Chappell, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI against Coffee, drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning with a double. Caroline Higdon had two hits including a double and one RBI. Morgan Bailey, Ansley Evans, and Kendyl Hardin (double) added one hit each. Against Armuchee, the Lady Cats pounded out 15 hits in support of Madi Bentley’s two-hit shutout. The Woodland pitcher walked one and fanned four in the four-inning victory. Hardin homered and doubled for five RBI to pace the Lady Cats’ attack. Morgan Bailey and Bella Carnes both contributed three hits and one RBI. Ansley Evans had two hits including a double and Chappell also finished with two hits. Higdon, Alyssa Motes, and Morgan Cooper added one hit and one RBI apiece. Woodland (5-4) hosts Brunswick and South Paulding Saturday as the tournament continues. CASS DROPS PAIR ON OPENING NIGHT OF BUC BASH Cass softball dropped a pair of games Friday night at Hamilton Crossing Park playing in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash. The Lady Colonels lost 6-3 to Pickens and 13-5 to Allatoona, falling to 1-5 on the season. Cass led Pickens 3-2 going into the fourth inning before the Dragons scored four times to take control. In the Colonels’ loss to Allatoona, the Lady Bucs broke open a 2-1 game in the fourth inning with six runs and followed up with five more in the fifth to lead 13-1. Cass scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but that would be as close as they would get. Haley Smith had a pair of doubles in the Colonels’ loss to Pickens. Eryn Lee also had two hits including a double and one RBI. Kailia Carson drove in two runs and had one hit. Kylie Hembree had the other Cass base hit. Kelly Young, Macenzie Dougharty, Haley Smith, Hembree (3-RBI triple), Haley Owens (RBI), Maggie Collum, Keturah Redding had one hit each against Allatoona. LADY CANES BLANKED BY PICKENS Cartersville softball was shutout for the second straight night Friday in a 10-0 loss to Pickens at Hamilton Crossing Park as part of the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash. Presley Edwards, Lauren McElhaney, and Madison Lingerfelt had the only base hits for the Lady Canes. Cartersville (5-4) will play Sonoraville and Alexander Saturday afternoon as their portion of the Buc Bash continues at Kennesaw Mountain High School.

Cartersville volleyball made it a two match sweep over visiting Coosa and Adairsville Thursday night at the Storm Center. The Lady Canes defeated Coosa in three sets before taking a straight set win over the Lady Tigers. Cartersville dropped their opening set with Coosa 25-22, but came back to win the next two sets 25-20 and 17-15. Nedu Evans (photo) had 18 kills, four aces, and eight digs for the Hurricanes. Grace Hunter totaled 34 assists across the three sets and Anna Mathis added 11 digs against the Eagles. Cartersville had a much easier time against Adairsville winning 25-11 and 25-8. Evans contributed nine kills and four service aces for the Canes. Hunter had 22 assists and six aces. Mathis added eight digs. “We managed to squeak by in the first match,” said Lady Canes’ coach Dutch Cothran. Coosa fought hard and pushed us. We’re learning and growing and trying to have fun as we progress.” Adairsville is off until September 4 when the Lady Tigers travel to Coosa to face the Eagles and Lafayette. Cartersville travels to Bremen August 28 to face Bremen and Villa Rica. WOODLAND EARNS SPLIT IN CHATSWORTH Woodland volleyball split a pair of matches Thursday night with Murray County and Southeast Whitfield in Chatsworth. The Lady Cats beat Murray County 25-19 and 25-18 behind seven digs and 12 assists from Macey Vaughn. Grace Webb added four kills and th ree blocks, while Noelle Dickey had six kills, eight digs, and a pair of assists. Against Southeast, the Lady Cats lost 25-19 and 25-18. Sydney Molinaro contributed four kills, two digs, and a block. Vaughn had three kills, three digs, and seven assists. Woodland hosts Hiram and Rockmart next Tuesday in a 5 p.m. start. CASS EDGED TWICE Cass volleyball was swept in a pair of matches Thursday at East Paulding. The Lady Colonels went three sets with the hosts after winning the middle set. East Paulding won the first and last sets, 25-17 and 25-18. In another tightly contested match against North Paulding, Cass lost to the Wolfpack 26-24 and 25-17. Cass hosts Pepperell and Armuchee in non-region matches Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The Lady Canes were shutout by visiting Chapel Hill Thursday night 11-0 behind a complete-game, two-hitter by Panthers’ pitcher Kira Morgan. Morgan needed only 62 pitches in her six inning effort. She fanned six. Chapel Hill led 5-0 through three innings, added two more in the fifth and four in the sixth inning. Jazlyn Perry went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI to pace Chapel Hill’s offense. Paige Vincent had two hits and seven other Panthers added one hit apiece. AnnaKate McElhaney and Colbi Ballard had the only Cartersville base hits. Ballard (3 IP, 5ER, 4H, 7BB, 2K) started in the circle and suffered the pitching loss. The Lady Canes are scheduled to face Union Grove and Alexander Saturday at Kennesaw Mountain High School in back-to-back games starting at 1 p.m. MURRAY COUNTY 5, ADAIRSVILLE 4 The Adairsville Lady Tigers softball squad lost a fifth, one-run decision Thursday night falling to the visiting Murray County Indians, 5-4 in eight innings. Adairsville led 4-2 through five innings, but Murray scored twice in the sixth to knot the score 4-4. A scoreless seventh frame sent the game to extra innings. Three singles, including two hits after two outs plated the Indians game-winning run. The Lady Tigers got a base runner to third in their half of the eighth, but were unable to push the run across. Rileigh Morgan and Jordan Swanson combined for six of Murray County’s twelve hits. Natalie O’Neal (8 IP, 4R, 2ER, 5H, 2BB, 5K) pitched all eight innings for the Indians. Taylor Rhoades (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3H, 0BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville in relief of Victoria O’Neal (5 IP, 4ER, 9H, 0BB, 6K) Sierra Tanner had two hits including a double for the Lady Tigers. Tori Lee, Natalie Burrow, and Chloe Souders added one hit apiece. Havyn Isaac forced in a run. Murray County improved to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (2-9, 1-6) plays Sequoyah Saturday at 3 p.m. in a non-region game at North Cobb.

Woodland softball scored at least one run in every frame Thursday night as the Lady Cats outlasted visiting rival Cass, 8-6, in a Region 7-AAAAA contest. The two teams combined for 25 hits and Cass threatened late, but Woodland held off the Lady Colonels. After each team scored a run in the first inning, Woodland built a 4-1 lead through three innings. Cass narrowed the margin to 4-3 in the top of the fourth, but the Lady Cats answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth and another single run in the fifth to build a 7-3 lead. Both teams scored a run in the sixth to make it 8-4, before Cass scored twice in the top of the seventh for an 8-6 final. Madi Bentley earned a complete-game pitching victory for the Lady Cats. She walked five and struck out nine in seven innings. All six Cass runs were earned. Rachael Lee (3.2 IP, 6R, 3ER, 10H, 0BB, 2K, L) and Macenzie Dougharty (2.1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB) split time in the pitching circle for the Colonels. Dougharty was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and three RBI for the Cass offense. Kelly Young was 3-for-4. Maggie Collum had two hits including a double and one RBI. Hallie Owens had two hits including a double. Eryn Lee, Jaden Musacchio, and Kimberly Allen had the other Lady Colonels’ hits. Lee also stole two bases. Ansley Evans paced Woodland with three hits. WOODLAND EARNS SPLIT IN MATCHES AT ROCKMART The Lady Cats split a pair of non-region volleyball matches at Rockmart High School Tuesday evening. Woodland defeated Rockmart 25-10 and 25-14 after a loss to Central-Carroll in three sets, 25-16, 22-25, and 15-10. In the victory over Rockmart, Noelle Dickey had three aces, two assists, and three kills. Sydney Molinaro contributed two aces, two digs, six kills, and one block. In the loss to Central, Caroline Gore had seven kills and three digs. Molinaro added four digs, two kills, one assist, and eight blocks. Macey Vaughn contributed 10 digs, one ace, six assists, and two kills. CARTERSVILLE FALLS IN PAIR OF ROAD MATCHES Cartersville volleyball lost a pair of matches Tuesday evening at River Ridge High School falling in three sets in each. Host River Ridge topped Cartersville 25-7, 15-25, 15-8 in the opening match. The Lady Canes fell to Cambridge in the second match, 25-13, 25-27, and 15-10. Nedu Evans had 37 kills in the two matches combined. Grace Hunter finished with 66 assists and Anna Mathis added 21 digs. “We’ve been inconsistent,” said Cartersville coach Dutch Cothran. “We are addressing it and we just have to keep driving on until we get things going. Hopefully, that will be pretty soon.” The Lady Canes (2-9) host Coosa and Adairsville Thursday at the Storm Center starting at 5 p.m. CASS SWEPT IN MATCHES AT ROME The Lady Colonels dropped two matches Tuesday at Rome High School, narrowly falling to Chattooga 25-22 and 25-23 before a 25-16, 25-20 loss to Rome. Cass plays at East Paulding Thursday at 5:30 p.m. LADY TIGERS FALL AFTER WINNING OPENING SET Adairsville volleyball won the first set against Murray County Tuesday 25-17, but dropped the next two sets 25-22 and 15-3 in a loss to the Lady Indians. The Lady Tigers then fell to Armuchee in straight sets 25-20 and 25-20 to watch their season mark slip to 0-6. Adairsville will seek to make improvements with the important Region 6-AAA schedule on the horizon. They play another non-region match Thursday at Cartersville.

LADY CATS TOP LONGHORNS Woodland softball scored five runs in the top of the first Tuesday evening at Kell and made it hold up in a 5-4 Region 7-AAAAA victory. Kell chipped away with two runs in the second inning and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but came away one run short. Even after narrowing the Woodland lead to 5-4 with one out in the final frame the Longhorns loaded the bases, but pitcher Lady Cats’ pitcher Sarah Baynard escaped the threat. She induced a ground ball force out at home and then finished off the Longhorns with a strikeout to end the game. Baynard picked up the pitching victory with a complete-game. She scattered 11 hits in seven innings of work allowing four runs (three earned) with one walk and five strikeouts. Savannah Markt led Kell with three hits. Gracie Glass, Brooke Kell, and Lexy McCullough added two hits each for the Longhorns. Ansley Evans paced Woodland with three hits. Jordan Duck had two hits including a double and one RBI. Woodland (3-4, 2-2) hosts county rival Cass Thursday at 5:55 p.m. CARTERSVILLE WALKS OFF WITH WIN OVER PATRIOTS E Jenkins scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday night as the Lady Canes picked up a Region 5-AAAA walk-off victory over visiting Sandy Creek. Jenkins actually stuck out to start the inning, but reached first when the catcher couldn’t handle strike three. She was sacrificed to second base by Mattie Johnson who actually ended up on first due to a Sandy Creek miscue. Jenkins stole third to set up the game-winning run. Cartersville battled from behind just to get the game into extra innings. Sandy Creek scored three runs in the top of the first and added another run in the third inning. The Lady Canes chipped away to tie with a run in the first, two in the second, and one more run in the third inning to knot the score at 4-4. From there, both pitchers and the defenses kept the game at 4-all into the extra frame. Kaliyah Smith (7+ IP, 4R, 2ER, 6H, 5BB, 6K) suffered the loss for Sandy Creek with a complete-game effort. Cartersville’s Colbi Ballard (8 IP, 1ER, 5H, 4BB, 12K) earned the pitching win in relief of AnnaKate McElhaney (3R, 2ER, 3H, 1BB). LADY TIGERS SUFFER ROAD REGION LOSS Adairsville softball battled in a 2-2 tie into the final inning Tuesday night at region opponent Haralson County, but lost a tough decision, 3-2. The Lady Rebels took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but Adairsville tied the game 2-2 in the fourth. Ellie Maria had four hits for Haralson County with two RBI, including a game-winning, walk-off double in the final inning. Emily Lightfoot drove in the other Rebels’ run. Victoria O’Neal had two hits, including a home run and two RBI to pace the Tigers’ offense. Havyn Isaac, Alexa Varner, Sierra Tanner, and Cortni Jacobs had the other Adairsville base hits. Taylor Rhoades (2 IP, 2ER, 5H) started in the pitching circle for the Tigers. O’Neal (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 3K) suffered the loss in relief. Haralson County improved to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in Region 6AAA. Adairsville softball lost a tough Region 6-AAA matchup at Calhoun Monday night, 3-1. The Yellow Jackets improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in region action with their win. For Adairsville, Sadye Johnson and Victoria O’Neal contributed one hit each. Cortni Jacobs added a pair of sacrifice bunts to put runners in scoring position and earned the Tigers’ RBI. O’Neal also started in the circle and pitched 6.2 innings. She finished with four strikeouts. Taylor Rhoades recorded the other out with a strikeout. Adairsville (2-7, 1-4) travels to Haralson County Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. start and will face Sequoyah Saturday in a non-region matchup at North Cobb High School.

Cartersville volleyball dropped a straight sets decision to visiting Sequoyah Monday night at the Storm Center. The Lady Chiefs won 25-15, 25-19, and 25-23 and improved to 5-3 on the season. “We lacked some energy tonight,” said Lady Canes’ coach Dustin Cothran after the match. “We eventually picked up the pace a little bit, but just never sustained a run long enough to get ahead.” Nedu Evans finished the three set match with 24 kills and 18 digs. Grace Hunter compiled 48 assists with 10 digs. Anna Mathis contributed 18 digs and three aces, while Anna Grace Brock added 16 digs. “We knew we had a tough schedule early and it would be easy to be frustrated right now,” Cothran stated. “The girls are working hard, however, and they’ll continue to do so. Plain and simple, our ball control and defense needs to improve. We’ll continue addressing those issues.” Cartersville (2-7) plays Tuesday at River Ridge against the Knights and Cambridge.
