NFL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 5th-year pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) …threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score this past Sunday, leading the Jaguars to an impressive 34-20 win that snapped the Denver Broncos’ 11-game winning streak. Lawrence has been hot in recent weeks as Jacksonville has taken over first place in the AFC South and outscored its last five opponents 171-72. The Jags have now won six straight. Lawrence scored on a 1-yard keeper and had touchdown throws to Parker Washington, Brenton Strange, and Travis Etienne in the win over the Broncos. The 26-year-old finished the day completing 23 of 36 passes for 279 yards and rushing for 20 more. Jacksonville (11-4) holds a one-game lead in their division and has regular-season games remaining against Indianapolis on Sunday and Tennessee at home on January 4. CHINESE BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION ASHTON HAGANS — Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons (6th year pro; Cartersville native; University of Kentucky; Newton HS) … the 26-year-old is currently playing for the Brave Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association, although he was initially listed on the opening day roster for the Portland Trail Blazers’ NBA G-League team, the Rip City Remix. Hagans spent a brief stint with the Portland NBA franchise in 2024 and played in the CBA last season. He signed with the Cairns Taipans of Australia’s NBL earlier this year before being released from that contract in September. He is averaging two points, two rebounds, and three assists through the first four games of the season with the Brave Dragons (3-1). FOOTBALL KHRISTIAN LANDO — Jacksonville State University (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … made his first start for the Gamecocks, rushing for 44 yards on 11 carries with a long run of 17 yards as JSU beat Troy University 17-13 in the Salute to Veterans Bowl in Montgomery on December 16. Lando finished the season with 201 rushing yards on 51 attempts with one touchdown. He also caught one pass for 11 yards as the Gamecocks finished a 9-5 season. IAN WILLIAMS — University of Memphis (Fr., Cass HS) … saw action on special teams last Friday in the Tigers’ 31-7 loss to N.C. State at the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa. Williams completed his true-freshman season with six tackles as Memphis finished an 8-5 campaign. WRESTLING WILLIAM BISHOP — Reinhardt University (Fr., Woodland HS) … lost his bout at 125 pounds during the Eagles’ 39-9 loss to Life University on December 17. Reinhardt returns to action January 2-3 at the Huntingdon College Duals. LEE CAMP — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … won his 133-pound bout by pinfall at the 6:53 mark, but the Eagles fell at Life University on December 17, 39-9. BRYCE KRESHO — Franklin & Marshall College (Sr., Cass HS) … lost his 141-pound bout, but the Diplomats defeated Presbyterian College 31-10 last Thursday in Clinton, South Carolina. Franklin & Morris also had a team win over Davidson College, but lost to Air Force during the quad-meet. Next on the Diplomats’ schedule is the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Monday and Tuesday. CADEN McCRARY — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) … lost his 141-pound bout in the Eagles’ loss at Life University on December 17. Reinhardt returns to action January 2-3 at the Huntingdon College Duals. AIDAN PIATT — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cass HS) … lost his bout at 174 pounds in the Eagles’ loss on December 17 at Life University. NA’YEL CAMPER — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … totaled three points, three rebounds, and two assists in two one-sided wins by the Lady Eagles last week over Columbia International University and Point University. ANSLEY GRIFFIN — North Carolina Wesleyan University (So., Cartersville HS) … totaled nine points, two rebounds, two steals, and two assists in losses on December 15 and 16 at Southern Virginia University and Mary Baldwin University. - Woodland wrestling competes at Knockout Classic
December 22, 2025 Woodland wrestling participated in the Knockout Classic in Kissimmee, Florida, last weekend, with athletes in 11 out of 14 weight categories. The Wildcats secured 42nd place out of 68 teams in this event, which typically features one of the most formidable lineups in the southeastern U.S. Although none of the Wildcats earned podium spots at the event, Adrian Zapata (126 pounds) went 4-2 to lead at least six Woodland wrestlers with at least two bout wins. That group included Cayden Bagley (106, 2-2), Joshua Palmore (132, 2-2), Noah Cates (138, 2-2), Owen Jones (190, 2-2), and John Gill (215, 2-2). Woodland returns to action on January 3 at the Region 7-AAAA Duals Championship hosted by Cartersville High School.

December 20, 2025 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes stayed perfect on the season, capturing the championship of the SMI Carroll County Christmas Tournament with an 87-59 victory over the host Central-Carroll Lions on Saturday. Cartersville led 20-17 after a competitive first quarter before pulling away with a 25-14 second period to take a 45-31 halftime advantage. The Hurricanes continued to dominate in the third, outscoring Central 21-16 to build a 66-47 lead entering the final frame and cruising to the 28-point win. Xavier Lowe erupted for a game-high 34 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists, and three steals to lead Cartersville. Wyatt Thomason posted a monster double-double with 27 points and 18 rebounds while dishing out six assists. Kyron McClendon added 13 points, four assists, and two steals. Logan Van Pelt contributed seven points, seven rebounds, and three steals, and Shakai Taylor grabbed 13 rebounds to go with three points. Chace North paced Central with 28 points in the loss, while Josiah Buchanan chipped in 12 points. The Lions fell to 5-5 with the defeat. Cartersville improved to 8-0 and will next face Calhoun on Saturday, December 27, at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the Adairsville Christmas Classic. LADY CANES IMPROVE TO 7-1 WITH A ROAD WIN The Cartersville Lady Canes remained hot on the season, improving to 7-1 with a convincing 71-46 victory over the Discovery Lady Titans on Saturday in Lawrenceville in girls' basketball action. Cartersville set the tone early, building a 17-8 lead after the first quarter and extending the advantage to 32-19 by halftime. The Lady Canes continued to pull away in the third period, outscoring Discovery 18-17 to take a 50-36 edge into the final frame before sealing the 25-point win. Kaytlin Arnold paced the Cartersville attack with a game-high 22 points. Zoe McCurry added 14 points, Kaelyn Agee contributed seven, and Rakhia Price, Trinity Montgomery, and Bayley Stanley each finished with six points. For Discovery, which fell to 6-4, Jaymee Carter and Krisheya Wilson each scored 13 points to lead the Lady Titans. Cartersville will host Discovery in a rematch on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

December 20, 2025 The Excel Christian Academy Eagles improved to 11-3 on the season with an impressive 89-76 victory over the visiting Trion Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Emerson. The Eagles led 24-14 after the first quarter and 44-36 at halftime before winning the third period 30-19 for a 74-55 advantage heading into the final period. Mason McKinney led the balanced Excel attack with a team-high 20 points. Damir McBride added 18 points, while Karden Wingard contributed 14 and Jamari Gatson chipped in 12 to round out the double-figure scorers for the Eagles. Trion's offense revolved around standout Sam Mobbs, who poured in a game-high 34 points in a valiant effort. Ashton Mason and LaBrian Ludy finished with 12 points each for the Bulldogs, who fell to 7-5 with the loss. The win caps a strong pre-holiday stretch for Excel Christian Academy, which now turns its attention to the three-day KSA Events Holiday Tournament Green Bracket in Kissimmee, Florida, to be held at Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center, scheduled for December 29-31. In addition to ECA, that tournament bracket will include Bishop Moore Catholic (FL), Central-Tuscaloosa (AL), Chester (CA), Lake Buena Vista (FL), St. Johns Country Day (FL), St. Stephens Episcopal (TX), Trinity Christian Academy (FL), and Whitley County (KY). SEQUOYAH 86, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 51 The visiting Sequoyah Chiefs handed the Adairsville Tigers an 86-51 loss on Saturday. Sequoyah took control early, building a 26-8 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 43-21 by halftime. The Tigers cut into their deficit with a 17-11 third quarter, but the Chiefs pulled away in the final period. Donovan DeGourville led the way for Sequoyah with a game-high 27 points. Alec Eckerman added 14 points, and Landon Hernandez contributed 10 as the Chiefs improved to 5-5 on the season. Brooks Rutledge paced Adairsville with 14 points. Barrett Fuller finished with 10 points, while Hank Barfield added seven and Jaxon Freeman chipped in six for the Tigers, who fell to 0-11. Adairsville returns to action on December 27 at 8:30 p.m. when it hosts Sonoraville in the first round of the Adairsville Christmas Classic. HARALSON COUNTY 76, WOODLAND BOYS 43 The Haralson County Rebels used a dominant second quarter to take command and roll to a 76-43 victory over the Woodland Wildcats in boys high school basketball action on Saturday at the North Murray Mistletoe Madness Tournament. Haralson County outscored Woodland 27-12 in the second period to seize control of the contest and never looked back, improving to 6-2 on the season. The Wildcats dropped to 6-7 with the loss. Caiden Moore led Woodland with 15 points, while Amir Heath added 10 in the defeat. The Wildcats return to the court on December 30 with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Pepperell.

December 20, 2025 Kyron McClendon scored 23 points Friday night in the Hurricanes' 72-58 semifinal win over Bowdon at the SMI Carrollton Holiday Tournament. The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes remained unbeaten on the season with a 72-58 victory over the Bowdon Red Devils on Friday night in the semifinals of the SMI Carrollton Christmas Tournament, played at Villa Rica High School. Cartersville (7-0) took control in the middle two periods to pull away and never looked back, advancing to Saturday night’s championship game. The Purple Hurricanes led 15-8 after a low-scoring first period before exploding for 21 points in the second quarter and 24 more in the third period to take leads of 36-29 at the intermission and 60-48 at the end of the third. They closed strong to seal the win. Kyron McClendon led a quintet of Canes scorers with 23 points, knocking down six three-pointers and grabbing three rebounds with two assists. Xavier Lowe added 18 points, Nas Bennett chipped in 11 with seven boards and three assists, Wyatt Thomason scored 10 with eight rebounds, and Shakai Taylor contributed nine points and six boards. Bowdon (5-2) got a game-high 24 points from Zayland Allen, but the Red Devils could not overcome Cartersville’s hot shooting and defensive pressure in the middle quarters. The Purple Hurricanes will now face the Central-Carroll Lions in the SMI Carrollton Christmas Tournament championship game on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. at Central-Carroll High School. Cartersville will return to action the following weekend when they travel to the Adairsville Christmas Classic to take on Calhoun on Saturday, December 27, at 5:30 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 38, CHATTOOGA 27 The Adairsville Lady Tigers used a strong defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Chattooga Lady Indians 38-27 on Friday night. Chattooga (5-3) struggled offensively in the early going, managing just 3 points in a lopsided first quarter as Adairsville jumped out to a 14-3 lead. The Lady Tigers extended their advantage to 19-10 at halftime before Chattooga made a push in the third quarter, taking a 22-21 lead. Adairsville responded with a 17-5 fourth-quarter surge to pull away for the comfortable victory. Savannah Viktora led the Lady Tigers with 16 points, while Samantha Gough added 13 as the two accounted for nearly all of Adairsville’s scoring. For Chattooga, Addie Veatch and Gracelyn Rutledge each scored 7 points to pace the Lady Indians. The Lady Tigers (3-8) will open play in their holiday tournament when they face McEachern in the first round of the Adairsville Christmas Classic on Saturday, December 27, at 7:00 p.m. HARALSON COUNTY 39, WOODLAND GIRLS 26 Anna Lane Coy scored 21 points, and Hope Davis added eight, leading the Haralson County Lady Rebels to a 39-26 win over Woodland in action at the North Murray High School Mistletoe Madness Tournament. The win snapped a six-game skid to open the season for the Lady Rebels (1-6). A pair of freshmen did the bulk of the scoring for Woodland. Karissa Williams scored 12 points, and Destiny Jackson added eight for the Lady Cats. Woodland (3-9) plays host North Murray on Saturday at 3 p.m. and will return to action after Christmas at Pepperell on December 30. McMINN CENTRAL (TN) 56, WOODLAND BOYS 41 A poor shooting second quarter doomed the Wildcats on Friday in a 56-41 loss to McMinn Central (TN) at the North Murray High School Mistletoe Madness Tournament in Chatsworth. Woodland trailed 16-10 after one quarter and was outscored 16-7 in the second period, falling behind 32-17 at the break. The Wildcats surged back to within 10 points by the end of the third period, but the Chargers held on in the final period. Bryce Mullins led McMinn Central (5-5) with 18 points. Hunter Daffron scored nine for the Chargers. Canden Davis and Amir Heath posted 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Wildcats. Woodland (6-6) plays Haralson County on Saturday at 1 p.m. at North Murray. The Wildcats will travel to Pepperell on December 30. CHATTOOGA 54, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 37 The visiting Chattooga Indians led 15-2 after one quarter and 34-13 at halftime on Friday night en route to a 54-37 non-region win at Adairsville. D.J. Etchison scored 18 points, and Tra’shaun Lester added 10 for Chattooga (3-4). Brooks Rutledge led the Tigers’ scoring with 15 points. Lucas Poarch and Hank Barfield added eight and seven, respectively. Adairsville (0-10) hosts Sequoyah on Saturday at 3 p.m. and will face Sonoraville at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, in the opening round of the Adairsville Christmas Classic.
- Adairsville wrestling celebrates Senior Night with two victories
December 19, 2025 The Adairsville High School wrestling team won two dual matches Wednesday night at home, defeating Pickens and Rome as the Tigers celebrated their 2025-26 seniors. Adairsville defeated Pickens 42-30 and Rome 44-35. Senior David Coon led the Tigers with pinfall victories in both of his 175-pound bouts. He improved his senior-season record to 23-5. Fellow seniors Sam Bailey (126), Victor Singer (150), and William Dinafrio (215) were also recognized. The Tigers return to the mats on December 29-30 at the Rockmart Invitational.

December 18, 2025 In Thursday night's basketball games, five local high school teams secured victories, with three teams avenging early-season losses. The Cartersville boys triumphed in their first-round game at the SMI Carrollton Holiday tournament. The Excel Christian boys powered past the LaFayette Ramblers. The Woodland boys defeated Unity Christian School, and both Cass teams topped Sonoraville. EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 83, LAFAYETTE 47 The Excel Christian Academy boys avenged an early-season one-point loss to LaFayette on Thursday night with a resounding 83-47 win on the Ramblers' home floor. The Eagles raced to a 25-8 lead in the first quarter and led 49-19 by halftime. Jamari Gatson led five ECA scorers in double digits with 20 points. Damir McBride and Mason McKinney scored 12. Mier Bell and Clay Poe each added 11 points. Layton Overby and Da’Jon Careathers each scored 10 points for the Ramblers (7-4). Excel Christian (10-3) hosts Trion on Saturday at 2 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 68, VILLA RICA 60 The Canes trailed by two points at halftime Thursday night but gained control in the second half for a 68-60 first-round win over host Villa Rica at the SMI Carrollton Holiday Tournament. Cartersville led 51-45 to start the fourth quarter and held off the Wildcats over the final eight minutes. Nas Bennett poured in 24 points for the Hurricanes. Xavier Lowe produced 15. Kyron McClendon scored 14, and Wyatt Thomason added 10 points. Josiah Nolan and Jordan Beveree led Villa Rica (3-7) with 11 points. Avion McDaniel chipped in 10. Cartersville (6-0) returns to Villa Rica High School on Friday to play Bowdon in the tournament semifinals at 5:30 p.m. CASS GIRLS 49, SONORAVILLE 48 Nakayla Evans scored 25 points, and Anizah Taylor produced 10 points on Thursday night as the Lady Colonels rallied in the fourth quarter to edge visiting Sonoraville 49-48. Yvonne Ellison and Cadie Paez added eight and six points, respectively, for Cass. The Lady Phoenix led 26-19 at halftime and held a 43-37 advantage leading into the final period. Cass outscored Sonoraville 12-5 in the fourth quarter to pull out a one-point win. The win for Cass marked a massive turnaround from the two teams' original meeting this season. Sonoraville (7-3) won 71-35 on November 18. The victory also gave the Lady Colonels three wins in their last four games, heading into their holiday break. Lakelin Hall led Sonoraville (7-3) with 12 points. Lilli Lovingood followed with 10. The Lady Colonels (3-7) return to action on Saturday, January 3, at Adairsville at 6 p.m. CASS BOYS 61, SONORAVILLE 56 The Colonels outscored visiting Sonoraville 20-13 in the second quarter on Thursday and carried a 29-26 lead to the break in an eventual 61-56 victory over the Phoenix. The Cass victory earned a season split with the Phoenix, who won 68-56 in the first matchup on November 18. Isaiah Moreno paced Cass with 19 points. Jahill Abdullah-Kortey scored 11, and Derrick Sams added eight points. Clay Worley led Sonoraville with 19 points. Beaty Terrette added 14 for the Phoenix (3-7). Cass (3-7) plays at Adairsville on Saturday, January 3 at 7:30 p.m. UNITY CHRISTIAN 47, WOODLAND GIRLS 37 The visiting Lady Lions grabbed a 22-4 lead in the first quarter and held off a rally by Woodland in the second half on Thursday for a 47-37 win. Anna Grace Wells led Unity Christian (2-4) with 17 points. Brinzlee Painter scored eight for the Lions. Destiny Jackson poured in 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Lady Cats’ loss.“It was a great team effort tonight,” stated Woodland coach Whitney Wissing. “I’m proud of the effort.” Woodland (3-8) plays Haralson County on Friday at 2:30 at North Murray, and faces the host Mountaineers on Saturday at 3 p.m. WOODLAND BOYS 72, UNITY CHRISTIAN 57 The host Wildcats trailed early but utilized a strong second-quarter run on Thursday night to defeat Unity Christian 72-57. Woodland outscored the Lions 18-6 in the second period to lead 29-20 at the break. The Wildcats extended that lead to 21 points by the end of the third quarter. Canden Davis led four Wildcats in double-digit scoring with 17 points. Jonathan Hart followed with 12 points, while Amir Heath and Caiden Moore each added 11. - Canes, Colonels earn Top Ten spots in final football polls
December 19, 2025 The 2025 high school football state championship games were completed earlier this week in Atlanta, and the six polling organizations in Georgia have released their final rankings for the year. In Class 4A, the Creekside Seminoles finished off a 15-0 season and were the unanimous choice for No. 1 in the classification. Creekside defeated Benedictine 42-39 in the title game, and the Cadets (11-3) were the unanimous No. 2 selection in the final polls. Cartersville was tabbed as No. 5 in the cumulative poll released by Georgia High School Daily on Friday. The Hurricanes were ranked as high as fourth by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This marks the Jaguars' fifth consecutive win, placing them at the top of the AFC South. In the first nine games of this season, Lawrence threw 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. However, during the Jaguars' ongoing streak, he has improved to 13 touchdowns and four interceptions. Since the Week 12 overtime win against Arizona, where he threw three touchdowns and three interceptions, he has thrown nine touchdowns without any interceptions. NFL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 5th-year pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) …accounted for six touchdowns, including a career-high five passing, and the Jacksonville Jaguars overwhelmed the New York Jets from start to finish in a 48-20 drubbing Sunday. Lawrence completed 20 of 32 passes for 330 yards and didn't have a turnover for the third consecutive game. His passer rating of 136.7 was the best of his five-year NFL career. December 16, 2025 The Cartersville Lady Canes and Hurricanes completed a doubleheader sweep against the visiting Cass on Tuesday night. PHOTO: Russell Andrews The Cartersville Lady Canes continued their strong start to the season with a commanding 58-29 victory over the Cass Lady Colonels on Tuesday night at The Storm Center, improving to 6-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in region play. Cartersville controlled the game from the opening tip, building an 18-5 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 32-17 by halftime. The Lady Canes maintained their momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Cass 23-12 to take a comfortable 54-29 advantage into the final period before cruising to the 29-point win. Sophomore Zoe McCurry led the way for Cartersville with a game-high 17 points. Kaytlin Arnold added 11 points, while Reese Gibson contributed seven. For Cass, which fell to 2-7 overall and 2-1 in the region, Cadie Paez paced the team with 11 points, and Anizah Taylor chipped in 7. The win keeps Cartersville atop the region standings early in the schedule as they look to build on their hot start. Up next, the Lady Canes travel to face Discovery in Lawrenceville on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Cass returns home to host Sonoraville on Thursday at 6 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 69, CASS 58 Nas Bennett scored 14 points in the Canes' win over Cass on Tuesday. The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes remained unbeaten with a 69-58 victory over the Cass Colonels on Tuesday night at The Storm Center, improving to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in region play. Cartersville seized a slim 10-9 edge after the first quarter before taking a 30-28 lead at the intermission. The Canes extended their advantage to 49-39 by the end of the third quarter and finished off an 11-point win. Wyatt Thomason led a balanced Cartersville attack with 19 points, followed closely by Xavier Lowe with 16 and Nas Bennett with 14. Kyron McClenson added 9 points in the winning effort. For Cass, which dropped to 2-7 overall and 2-1 in the region, Isaiah Moreno paced the team with 17 points, Eli Simmons scored 15, and Lucas Pealor contributed 8. The victory keeps Cartersville perfect through the early portion of the season as they continue to assert themselves as a region frontrunner. ALLATOONA 38, WOODLAND GIRLS 15 Sophie Macurak and Addie Gray led the Allatoona girls with 12 and 10 points, respectively, in a 38-15 Region 7-4A win Tuesday night at Woodland. Allatoona (2-5, 2-1) led 15-2 at halftime and extended its lead in the second half. Destiny Jackson led the Lady Cats with 11 points and 17 rebounds. Woodland (3-7, 0-3) hosts Unity Christian on Thursday at 6 p.m. and will play Haralson County on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at North Murray High School. WALTON 78, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 28 The Adairsville boys lost at Class 6A Walton on Tuesday evening, 78-28. The host Raiders improved to 8-1 on the season. Adairsville (0-9) hosts Chattooga in a non-region contest on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and will host Sequoyah on Saturday at 3 p.m.
- Adairsville wrestling competes at McCallie Invitational
December 14, 2025 Adairsville wrestling placed 29th of 34 teams Friday and Saturday at the McCallie Gordon Connell Invitational in Chattanooga. McCallie won the tournament with 320 points. Baylor (TN) (176), Bradley Central (TN) (172.5), Signal Mountain (TN) (166), and Lakeway Christian Academy (TN) (164) rounded out the top five teams. David Coon finished sixth for the Tigers in the 175-pound bracket. He went 5-3 in his bouts during the tournament, with four wins by pin and one by technical fall. The Tigers host a tri-meet at home on Wednesday with Rome and Pickens. Bouts begin at 5 p.m.
- Woodland wrestling third at Cleveland Duals
December 14, 2025 Woodland wrestling placed third on Saturday at the Al Miller Cleveland Duals hosted by Cleveland High School (TN). Woodland had wins over Carrollton 51-21, Mountain View (AL) 53-15, and Summit (TN) 45-21 in Pool B. The Wildcats lost to Blackman (TN) 42-30 in the preliminary rounds. Woodland defeated Thompson (AL) 38-35 for third place. John Gill (215, 5-0), Nathan Cates (150, 5-0), and Owen Jones (190, 5-0) went unbeaten in the tournament for the Wildcats. Other top performers included Adrian Zapata (120, 3-1), Cayden Bagley (106, 2-1), Noah Cates (138, 3-2), Nick Weathersbee (113, 3-2), and Will Thomas (285, 2-2). Up next for the Wildcats is the Knockout Christmas Classic on Friday and Saturday in Kissimmee, Florida.
