    The Woodland tennis teams defeated Hiram Thursday evening with the Lady Cats winning 5-0 at Hiram and the Wildcats winning 4-1 at home.   • Six run eighth costs Chargers as Gordon State evens series

    Gordon State erupted for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to break open a tie game and defeat the visiting Georgia Highlands Chargers Thursday afternoon in Barnesville, 9-4. Georgia Highlands scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead, but the host Highlanders matched those runs in the bottom of the third. GHC again took the lead with a run in the fourth before Gordon State tied the game 3-3 in the sixth inning. The Highlanders’ six run damage in the eighth started with Dane Bullock’s second home run of the day. The eighth inning two-run homer gave Gordon a 5-3 lead. He also hit a solo shot in the sixth inning to knot the score at the time. Two hit batsmen, a pair of singles, and a double added four more runs in the decisive inning for the Highlanders as they evened the four-game series at one game each. Jonathan Robinson picked up the pitching win for Gordon State by working the final two frames in relief of starter Cory Bartholomew. GHC’s Cody Johnson (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB, 2K) was assigned the loss in relief of starter Matt Norton (2.2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 1K) and Travis Kuebler (3.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 4K). Brady Barker (0.0 IP, 3ER, 1H) and Kevin Barham (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2K) also pitched for the Chargers. In addition to Bullock’s four-RBI day for Gordon State, Datren Bray and Brian Moore both contributed a pair of hits and one RBI each. Georgia Highlands out hit Gordon State 12 to 8, but lacked the timely hits to drive in runs. Austin Foster went 3-for-4 for the Chargers and Willis Kemp finished the day 2-for-5. Parker Orr drove in two runs and had one hit. Skylar McPhee (double), Cameron Hearn (RBI), Brandon Allen, Spencer Lewis, Bryson Horne (RBI), and Zach Miller added one hit apiece. Georgia Highlands (21-9, 7-4 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) will return to Barnesville Saturday for a doubleheader to wrap up the week’s four-game conference series. Gordon State improved to 18-13 overall and 4-3 with Thursday’s win.

  • Cass tennis teams claim region wins

    The Cass tennis teams were both 3-2 winners over Hiram Wednesday at Hamilton Crossing Park. The Lady Colonels picked up victories at Line 1 singles and in both doubles matches while the boys won on singles lines 2 and 3 and secured the team victory with a win at Line 1 doubles. Emily Surcey won 6-1, 6-0 for the Lady Colonels, while the doubles pairings of McKenley King and Emma Wickenheiser and Alexis Pritchett and Grace Njorge earned solid wins by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2 scores. The Colonels took two of three singles matches with Reagan Barrere earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory at Line 2 and Max McCauley survived a 6-2, 6-8, 6-1 battle to win at Line 3. The Cass Line 1 doubles pairing of brothers Kendall and Noah Arnold won 6-2, 6-3 for the Colonels third team point and the victory.

    The Adairsville High School tennis teams dropped matches at home Wednesday to the Bremen Blue Devils.   • Adairsville shutout at Haralson

    Haralson County pitcher Landon Malone tossed a five-hit shutout at visiting Adairsville Wednesday evening to lead the Rebels past the Tigers 6-0 in a Region 6-AAA game. Malone struck out seven and walked only two in seven innings. The host Rebels scored single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead. Haralson then doubled their advantage with a three-run sixth. Haralson managed only three hits in the game, but also took advantage of nine walks and four Adairsville errors. The Tigers had five hits including two by Caden Gibbs. Garrett Mishoe, Halen Huskins, and Noah Dutton had the other Adairsville base hits. Mishoe (5 IP, 3R, 1ER, 1H, 6BB, 8K) went five innings and received the pitching loss. Levi Blackwell (0.1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K and Landon Ayers (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB) pitched in the sixth. Haralson County improved to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in region action. Adairsville (9-5, 2-2) hosts Sonoraville Thursday.

  • Colonels win at Villa Rica; Woodland falls to visiting East Paulding

    Cass baseball broke open a close game with a five-run fifth inning Wednesday evening at Villa Rica to defeat the Wildcats 8-2 in Region 7-AAAAA action. Cass led 3-1 through four innings before the fifth inning scoring eruption. Cass took advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen to set up a two-run single by Evan Hinton that extended the Colonels’ lead to 5-1. Two wild pitches and another walk preceded an RBI single by Thomas Botts and the Cass lead was 8-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth. Blaine Ingram drove in a third inning run with a double to give Cass a 1-0 lead. Nathan Smith put Cass up 3-0 with a two-run double in the fourth. Two walks and a single by Bryson Smith gave the Wildcats their first run in the fourth inning.They added a seventh inning run when Trevor Murphy doubled. Murphey and Johnny Bravy led the Villa Rica offense with two hits each. Noah Best (4.1 IP, 7R, 6ER, 5H, 2BB, 6K) was tagged with the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Bravy and Murphy pitched in relief for Villa Rica. Evan Hinton (6 IP, 1ER, 4H, 4BB, 8K) earned the pitching win for the Colonels. Nic Walllin (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 3K) closed out the final frame. Hinton and Smith (double, RBI) led Cass with two hits apiece. Smith (double, 2 RBI), Steven Spell and Ingram (double, RBI) contributed one hit each for the Colonels. Following the loss, Villa Rica is 8-10 overall and 1-4 in region play. Cass (8-8, 2-2) evened its overall and region marks with the road win. The Colonels host county rival Woodland Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and Villa Rica Friday at 5:55 p.m. EAST PAULDING 11, WOODLAND 1 East Paulding pitcher Jacob Cook tossed a complete game, scattered five hits and allowed only one earned run with a walk and five strikeouts as the visiting Raiders defeated Woodland 11-1 in six innings Wednesday night. Cook blanked the Wildcats through the first four innings before allowing the lone Woodland run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Dylan Webb. The Raiders’ senior was also a major contributor at the plate where he went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Andrew Pendleton had two hits and four RBI. Seth Grenon drove in a run with two hits. Jackson Phipps finished with two hits including a double while Brandon Haston doubled twice for East Paulding. Woodland pitcher Ben Ammons (4 IP, 7R, 3ER, 9H, 0BB, 2K) suffered the loss on the mound. Seth McGill (2 IP, 4ER, 5H) pitched the fifth and sixth innings for the Wildcats. Five different Wildcats had one hit each including Garrett Cornett, Koby Stansel, Chris Mills, Marco Haro, and Dylan Webb. East Paulding improved to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAAAA with the victory. Woodland (8-8, 1-1) plays region games at Cass Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and at East Paulding Friday at 5:55 p.m.

  • Canes blank Chapel Hill, Lady Canes rally for win

    The Cartersville boys soccer team blanked Chapel Hill 5-0 in a Region 5-AAAA Tuesday at the Cartersville Soccer Complex. The Hurricanes led 1-0 at halftime on a header goal by Pedro Ghanem off a corner kick. Ghanem scored goals twice in the second half to complete his hat trick. Houston Read and Javi Morillon also added Canes’ goals. The final Cartersville tally was on an own goal. Cartersville (7-3, 4-0) hosts Heritage-Catoosa Thursday evening. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 5, CHAPEL HILL 3 The Lady Canes reeled off five straight goals Tuesday night in a come-from-behind 5-3 Region 5-AAAA win over Chapel Hill at the Cartersville Soccer Complex. Cartersville’s Courtney Rhea scored in the first half to cut Chapel Hill’s lead to 2-1 at the intermission. Marissa Mowry tied the game at 2-2 with an early second half goal abd Rhea gave Cartersville a 3-2 lead. The Lady Canes then took a 5-2 advantage on penaty kick goals by Kalyn Donegan and Mowry. Chapel Hill (6-5, 3-1) added a final goal, but the Hurricanes held on for the win. Cartersville (5-5, 3-1) hosts Heritage-Catoosa Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

  • Holdbrooks, Chargers take down Highlanders

    Alex Holdbrooks tossed eight strong innings and the Chargers’ offense produced double-digit runs as Georgia Highlands College defeated the visiting Gordon State Highlanders Tuesday night at LakePoint, 10-3. Holdbooks scattered four hits and two walks and was responsible for only one earned run. He fanned eight in earning the pitching victory. The Chargers scored seven runs in the first four innings to take a commanding 7-0 lead. After Gordon State made the score 7-1 in the fifth, GHC added three more runs in th eighth for a 10-1 advantage. The visiting Highlanders scored twice in the ninth but Chargers’ pitcher Jeremiah Woods (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2K) retired the final three outs to complete the 10-3 win. Zach MIller hit a first inning solo homerun and added a double for his two hits. Parker Orr blasted a two-run homer in the third inning that gave the Chargers a 5-0 lead. Willis Kemp had three hits and one RBI. Bryson Horne drove in two runs with a pair of hits that included a double. Nick Piccapietra contributed two hits including a double and one RBI. Austin Foster (RBI) and Skylar McPhee had one hit each. Seven Gordon State batters had one hit each. Former Adairsville standout Sam Seaman had one of those hits in a ninth inning pinch hit role. GHC (21-8, 7-3) and Gordon State (17-13, 3-3) continue their four-game conference series Thursday and Saturday in Barnesville. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday.

  • Athletes Beyond Bartow: Robinson helps lead Emmanuel to NCCAA title

    Former Excel Christian Academy standout Elijah Robinson was part of a National Championship team at Emmanuel College. Emmanuel is transitioning to NCAA D-II status and was ineligible for post-season play in the NCAA. The 6-5 swingman helped the Lions capture the National Christian College Athletic Association national title where he notched a double-double in the championship game. This update also includes local athletes competing in college golf, softball, tennis, and track and field. NOTE: The baseball update was published in a separate article this week. BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanuel College, Sr., G/F, Excel Christian Academy)… posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds in the championship game of the National Christian College Athletic Association tournament. He helped the Lions win the title with an 85-65 win over Southwestern Christian. In the first round, he had 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. He had a quiet night in the semifinals, putting up just nine points before bouncing back in the championship tilt. GOLF MAGGIE ASHMORE — Augusta University (Sr., Kingston, GA, Heritage Golf Academy, HIlton Head, SC)… tied for 12th individually in the 3M Augusta Invitational hosted by Augusta University this past weekend. She shot 75 in each of her first two rounds before a fantastic four-under-68 to close strong. The Jaguars finished tied for second with Purdue — nine strokes back of champion Georgia. Augusta will play in the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State Mon.-Tue, March 26-27 at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw. LINDSEY BONNER — York University (Fr., Cartersville HS)… finished 18th as York won the Mary Washington Eagle Invitational over the weekend. Bonner shot 112-102 in the 36-hole event. The Lady Spartans compete next in the Ursinus Spring Invitational Saturday and Sunday in Elkton, MD. HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA, Darlington HS)… improved each round at the 3M Augusta Invitational. She shot 78, 76 and 73 over the three rounds to land in a tie for 36th. Mercer placed ninth in the 15-team event. Next for the Bears is the LSU Tiger Golf Classic Friday through Sunday in Baton Rouge. SOFTBALL SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF, Cass HS)… went 0-for-2 in both games of a Sunday doubleheader split with South Georgia State College. She drove in one run in the first game, an 8-3 loss. GHC (19-12, 7-3) plays at USC Salkehatchie Wednesday and returns to conference play Saturday at West Georgia Tech. CASSIDY HOWREN — Reinhardt University (Sr., C, Adairsville HS)… went 4-for-17, highlighted by a 3-for-4 performance in the first game of the week, in six appearances over the past seven days. She had an RBI in that standout outing against Point University. The Eagles (13-17, 3-4) host Tennessee Wesleyan Thursday in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup. SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Jr., C, Woodland HS)… finished 5-for-11, including a double and a triple, over four games this past week. She added one walk, three runs scored and three RBIs. LaGrange (9-15, 7-3) entertains Piedmont Saturday and Brevard College Sunday in doubleheaders. HANNAH KNAPP — Coastal Alabama CC (Soph., C, Adairsville HS)… Knapp was hitless in her only at bat of the past week, striking out in a 14-5 win over Lurleen B. Wallace CC. TRACK AND FIELD BREE COLE — Jacksonville State University (Fr., Cartersville HS)… wound up 45th in the 5000-meter run at the Yellow Jacket Invitational this past weekend at Georgia Tech. Next meet for the Gamecocks is the Choccolocco Challenge in Oxford, AL March 30-31. SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Jr., Kingston, GA; Darlington HS)… had a great showing in the 5000-meter run at the Rhodes College Track and Field Invitational. He placed third out of 81 participants. The Lynx compete next at the Harding Invitational Saturday in Searcy, Arkansas. ANNA HIGHTOWER — Georgia Tech (Jr., Cartersville HS)… placed second in the pole vault at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, clearing 3.85 meters. The Yellow Jackets participate in the Florida State Relays Friday in Tallahassee. BLAKE PERRY — Jacksonville State University (Sr., Cartersville HS)… Perry finished 21st in the 100-meter hurdles during the Yellow Jacket Invitational.   • GHC softball splits doubleheader at South Georgia

    Georgia Highlands softball split a pair of games Sunday at South Georgia, losing 8-3 in the opener but winning the second game 8-7 in Douglas. The Chargers led 2-0 early in Game 1, but succumbed to an eight-run fourth inning by South Georgia. In Game 2, the host Hawks took a 6-0 lead through three innings before Georgia Highlands scored six times in the fourth and added two more runs in the seventh for a come-from-behind one-run win. Shay Sullins (6.2 IP, 5ER, 10H, 1BB, 2K) was the winning pitcher for GHC in the second game. Micayla McCoy (0.1 IP, 1ER, 2H) entered in the seventh to retire the final out. In the opening loss, the Chargers managed only three hits. Second baseman Hannah Willis and first baseman Alia Booth had one hit and one RBI each. In the Game 2 win, Kindell Reeves had two hits and two RBI. Booth had two hits and one RBI. Wills drove in two runs with a double and three walks and Lexi Palazzo finished with a hit and two RBI. Mya Adams added a triple. Georgia Highlands (19-12, 7-3) currently sits in second place in the GCAA one game behind Georgia Military. The Chargers step out of conference Wednesday at USC Salkehatchie and will play at West Georgia Tech Saturday evening.
