A trio of Cass pitchers kept the Murray County bats at bay Thursday night as the Colonels won in Chatsworth 7-1 and swept the home-and-home series with the Indians. Cass broke on top 2-0 in the top of the first inning and added another run in the second. The Colonels lead remained 3-0 until they added an insurance run in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Murray County’s lone run came in the bottom of the seventh. Blaine Ingram (4 IP, 0R, 2H, 4BB, 1K) started on the bump for the Colonels. Evan Hinton (2 IP, 0R, 3H, 0BB, 4K) worked the fifth and sixth innings and Wyatt Karlovich (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 0BB, 1K) wrapped up the final frame. Six different Colonels had one hit each. Clay Means and Bryson Markley both doubled with two walks and one RBI. Matt Shook (sac fly RBI), Thomas Botts, Logan Nelson and Evan Hinton had the other hits. Steven Spell contributed a pair of RBI and Nathan Smith added one RBI. Murray County drops to 3-8 on the season. Cass (6-5) travels to Sonoraville Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Three early runs were enough for Adairsville pitcher Kyler Pelfrey Thursday evening as the Tigers defeated visiting Woodland, 3-1. Adairsville scored a single run in the first inning and two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats posted their only run in the fourth. Both pitchers were solid with complete game performances. Pelfrey struck out nine and allowed only two hits with no walks. Woodland’s Kenny Jinks went all six innings for the Wildcats, scattering five hits and a walk. He fanned 12. Hunter Hice had two hits for the Tigers including a double and one RBI. Pelfrey drove in a run with a triple. Garrett Mishoe and BJ Roper had the other Adairsville hits. Chris Mills and Dylan Webb had the Woodland hits. Woodland (6-6) hosts Pickens next Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and will open Region 7-AAAAA play at home Thursday against Cass. Adairsville (7-3) hosts North Cobb Saturday at 1 p.m. before opening Region 6-AAA play next Tuesday at home against Coahulla Creek.

The Georgia Highlands Chargers, fresh off a 24-run performance Sunday afternoon, scored double digit runs again Wednesday night for a 14-1 conference victory over visiting Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers scored twice in the first inning and added another run in the second for an early 3-0 lead. GHC then put the game away with five runs in both the fourth and fifth frames and another in the sixth for a commanding 14-0 lead. ABAC scored its only run in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded walk and managed only two hits off Chargers’ pitching in the game. Alex Holdbrooks (6 IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 6K) tossed six strong innings for the pitching victory. Sam Warren (0.0 IP, 1ER, 2BB) took the mound in the seventh and Cody Johnson (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K) wrapped up the final inning. Cameron Hearn helped lead the Chargers at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that included a pair of doubles and two RBI. Willis Kemp also doubled, drove home a run, and walked with a 3-for-4 night. Parker Orr had two hits and two RBI. Skylar McPhee had two hits. Nick Piccapietra had four RBI and a triple and Austin Foster contributed two RBI with a base hit. ABAC (12-12, 1-1 GCAA) will host the next three games in the series with Georgia Highlands with a single game Friday night and a doubleheader Saturday in Tifton. The Chargers improved to 15-6 overall and evened their Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association record at 1-1.

The Cass girls and boys soccer teams earned important Region 7-AAAAA victories Tuesday night at home facing Paulding County. The Lady Colonels won in a a shootout, 6-5 and the Colonels cruised to an easy 9-1 victory. At Adairsville, the Lady Tigers battled Model to a 5-5 draw while the Tigers fell to the Blue Devils, 6-4. CASS GIRLS 3, PAULDING CO. 2 (Cass wins 6-5 in shootout) Logan Vermaas scored both Cass goals and Briana Ochoa added an assist in regulation. After a pair of scoreless, five-minute overtime sessions the game was decided in a shootout. Vermaas, Hailey Henson, Leidi Toribio, Hannah Johnson, Ochoa, and Macy Wright converted penalty kicks for the Lady Colonels. Paulding slipped to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in region play. Cass (3-6, 1-2) travels to East Paulding next Tuesday for another region match. CASS BOYS 9, PAULDING CO. 1 The Colonels took a 3-1 lead to the intermission, but broke the game wide-open in the second half with six unanswered goals for a 9-1 Region 7-AAAAA win. Carlos Perez scored five goals for Cass and Anthony Robledo found the net three times for the Colonels. Robledo also contributed a pair of assists. Julio Medina assisted on two tallies and scored one goal himself. Jonathan Tong, Josh Flores, and Javier Duarte added one helper each and keeper Isai Romero made seven saves. Paulding County (2-6, 0-3) scored its only goal on a penalty kick. Cass (2-7, 1-2) plays at East Paulding next Tuesday. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 5, MODEL 5 Emily Collum scored five times to lead the Lady Tigers to a 5-5 draw with visiting Model Tuesday night in non-region action. The match was close throughout and was knotted 2-2 at halftime. Gillian Johnson assisted on three of the Adairsville goals. The Lady Tigers (4-1-2, 1-1 Region 6AAA) host Murray County in a region match next Tuesday. MODEL BOYS 6, ADAIRSVILLE 4 The Tigers held leads of 1-0, 2-1, and 4-2, but unbeaten Model put the final four goals in the back of the net as the visiting Blue Devils escaped with a 6-4 non-region win. Emmanuel Lopez scored twice for the Tigers. Joseph Pacheco and Miguel Garcia added the other Adairsville goals. Keeper Nic Jackson recorded eight saves. Adairsville, 2-0 in Region 6-AAA, returns to league action next Tuesday when they host Murray County.

The Woodland girls soccer team scored three times in the final ten minutes of the first half to break open a 1-1 tie and cruised in the second half to a 6-1 win Tuesday over visiting Kell. Molly Plott opened the Lady Cats’ scoring in the 17th minute of the first half but the Lady Longhorns knotted the game at 1-1 midway through the half. In the final ten minutes of the first half, Woodland took a 4-1 advantage on a pair of goals by Tiera Feanny and another by Anna McCrary. Kaitlin Winnenberg continued the Lady Cats’ scoring in the second half with a goal in the half’s opening minute and Feanny completed her hat trick midway through the half for a 6-1 final. Kell falls to 1-6-1 with the loss. Woodland (5-4-1, 2-1 in Region 7-AAAAA) plays at Rome next Tuesday.

Pitchers from Woodland and Sonoraville were dominant Tuesday night, but the Phoenix escaped with a 1-0 non-region win over the visiting Wildcats in ten innings. The loss spoiled an outstanding pitching performance by Woodland’s Koby Stansel who tossed eight shutout innings while scattering five hits and three walks. Stansel struck out seven. Peyton Posey (1.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB) suffered the pitching loss in relief. Trent Walker picked up the pitching win for the Phoenix by working the ninth and tenth innings. He allowed one hit. Sonoraville starter Wyatt Castoe went five innings and struck out seven. Gage Soulis fanned six in two and two-thirds innings and Collin Bridges retired the only batter he faced in the eighth as the four Phoenix pitchers combined on the two-hit shutout. Both teams loaded the bases in the eighth inning with two outs, but neither could push across a game-winning run. Sonoraville totaled seven hits in the game, including back-to-back by Grant Hegwood and Castoe in the final frame. The ground ball single by Castoe was good for a walk-off RBI. Woodland managed only two hits in the game. Chris Mills singled in the second inning and Bailey Ward singled in the ninth. The Wildcats went down in order in five innings. Hegwood and Castoe finished with two hits each for Sonoraville. Chase Kirby, Gavin Phillips, and Avery Hopper had the other Phoenix hits. Sonoraville improved to 2-2 with the win. Woodland (6-5) will look to bounce back Thursday at Adairsville at 5:30 p.m.
