Drew Wilson tossed a nine inning complete game gem Friday night for Georgia Highlands College as the Chargers defeated visiting Gordon State at LakePoint in Emerson, 6-1. Jerrmond Williams hit a two-out solo home run over the right field wall for Gordon State in the top of the first inning to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead, but Wilson scattered four more hits the rest of the night in an impressive outing. Wilson, a sophomore who played at Sonoraville High School, struck out ten, walked three, and threw first pitch strikes to 24 of the 35 batters he faced as he improved to 3-3 with his third complete game. Georgia Highlands took the lead for good in the third inning scoring two runs on only one hit. Zach Miller singled, reached second on an outfield error, and — after Parker Orr was hit by a pitch to load the bases — Bryson Horne was plunked with bases loaded to drive home Miller. Willis Kemp scored two pitches later on a wild pitch and GHC led 2-1. The Chargers added one run in the fourth on a solo shot by Austin Foster and three more in the seventh on their way to a five run conference victory. Skylar McPhee was the only Charger with two hits. He also drove in a run. Dane Bullock had two of the Highlanders’ five hits. The loss drops Gordon to 19-16 on the year and 5-6 in conference play. Georgia Highlands (24-11, 10-6) returns to Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference play Tuesday at South Georgia CC at 3 p.m. The Chargers will then host South Georgia for the final three games of the series with a single game Friday night at LakePoint and a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. With a dozen regular season conference games remaining, Georgia Highlands is currently in third place in the GCAA standings behind East Georgia CC and South Georgia CC.

Cass goalkeeper Brianna Bullock made two crucial saves in Friday’s shootout to lift the Lady Colonels to a 3-1 victory over Kell on penalty kicks. The Region 7-AAAAA victory closes out the region slate for Cass with a sixth consecutive win and avenges PK losses to the Lady Longhorns each of the past two seasons. Kell scored the only goal of the first half just past the mid-point of the opening 40 minutes. The Lady Colonels responded in the second half on a goal by Morgan Delarm. She was able to score off a cross from Logan Vermaas and the two teams finished regulation tied 1-1. After the two teams went scoreless through the two, five-minute overtimes, the game was decided on penalty kicks. Logan Vermaas, Emily Tracy, and Lupita Pineda found the back of the net on their PKs and Bullock made the stops necessary as the Lady Colonels won in dramatic fashion. Cass, 8-7 overall, finished Region 7-AAAAA play with a 6-2 record after opening losses to Carrollton and Rome. The six-game region win streak locks the Lady Colonels into the No. 3 seed in the Class 5A state tournament that begins April 24. The Lady Colonels have four more non-region games before the playoffs begin. Cass will host Darlington April 11, travel to North Springs April 13, and host Calhoun (April 17) and Heritage-Catoosa (April 19). KELL BOYS 5, CASS 4 The Cass boys soccer team was edged at home Friday night by visiting Kell, 5-4, in a Region 7-AAAAA match. Cass led 1-0 about midway through the first half on a Carlos Perez goal off an Anthony Robledo cross, but Kell responded approximately six minutes later to knot the game at 1-1 at halftime. In the second half, Kell scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead and ultimately deny a Colonels’ comeback. Cass did threaten however. The Colonels scored three goals in a seven-minute span to give themselves a chance, but ultimately came up one goal short. Felipe Albarran, Robledo, and Perez scored the second half goals for Cass. Cass (7-8, 5-3) returns to the pitch April 13 at North Springs.

Cartersville won its eighth straight game and improved to 7-0 in Region 5-AAAA with a 7-3 win Friday night at Richard Bell Field over Sandy Creek. The Canes led 3-0 through three innings only to have the visiting Patriots stir up three runs to knot the game 3-3 in the fourth. Cartersville added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to secure the win. Gage Morris (4 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 5K) came in to relieve starter Kolby Adams (3 IP, 3ER, 4H, 2BB, 5K) to lock down the victory. Connor Housely (5.2 IP, 7R, 6ER, 8H, 3BB, 6K) suffered the pitching loss for Sandy Creek. John Marant and Aaron Hackett led the Patriots at the plate with two hits each. Mason Barnett had two hits, including a double and one RBI for the Hurricanes. Jake Gooch and Ian Inaba also finished with two hits and one RBI each. Jordan Wilkie drove in a run with one hit and Josh Davis contributed a double. The Canes also took advantage of the Patriots on the base paths by stealing six bases in the game. Wilkie swiped two bags while Barnett, Davis, Preston Welchel, and LaDarius Winburn added one each. The loss keeps Sandy Creek (7-11, 1-7) at the bottom of the region standings. Cartersville (18-5, 7-0) steps out of region action next week to host Troy (OH) Tuesday at 5 p.m. and travel to Lassiter Thursday at 5 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE 6, LAKEVIEW-FT. OGLETHORPE 3 The Adairsville Tigers took over sole possession of third place in Region 6-AAA Friday night with a 6-3 win at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The Tigers hold a one-game lead over LFO and Calhoun following the first complete rotation through the region schedule. Adairsville took a 3-0 lead through the first four innings and extended their advantage to 6-1 in the sixth inning on a three-run homer by Hunter Hice. LFO, who out hit Adairsville seven to five, scored a single run in the seventh but Adairsville reliever Levi Blackwell got out of the inning. Kyler Pelfrey (6 IP, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 11K) went six complete innings to pick up the pitching win. Blackwell (1 IP, 1ER, 2H) pitched the seventh for the Tigers. Five different Adairsville players finished with one hit each including Noah Dutton (double), Pelfrey (double), Hice (HR), Garrett Mishoe, and Trace Still. Hice also added a sac fly RBI. The loss drops LFO to 12-6 overall and 5-4 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (13-6, 6-3) travels to top-ranked and region-leading Ringgold Tuesday for a 5:55 p.m. start and will host North Murray Thursday at 5:55 p.m. VILLA RICA 1, WOODLAND 0 Kenny Jinks tossed a complete-game two-hitter Friday night with a walk and four strikeouts, but was saddled with a tough-luck loss as Woodland fell at Villa Rica, 1-0. Logan Smallwood of Villa Rica was even better on the mound. The senior tossed a complete-game no-hitter and issued only one walk while striking out seven. Noah Best (double) and Smallwood had the only hits in the game. Parker Wells drove in the game’s only run with a fourth inning groundout after a walk, an error, and Smallwood’s base hit. Villa Rica evened their overall record at 10-10 and improved to 3-4 in region play. Woodland (10-12, 3-4) will host Villa Rica in a rematch Monday at 5:55 p.m. ROME 10, CASS 8 Cass fell behind early Friday night to visiting Rome and never recovered in a 10-8 Region 7-AAAAA loss at the Cass Athletic Complex. The Wolves scored five runs in the top of the first inning and the Colonels tried to chase them down the remainder of the evening. Cass narrowed Rome’s lead to 5-3 in the second inning, trailed 7-4 after three innings, and got within two runs twice more but could not overcome the Wolves’ fast start. Rome used three pitchers with Kade Garrard picking up the win in middle relief. The Wolves tallied 14 hits led by Alden Astin’s three hits and Kade Garrard’s three hits and three RBI. Xavier Roberts-Donaldson, Chandler Bridges, and Braden Hyde each contributed two hits and one RBI. Steven Spell had two hits including a double and one RBI for the Colonels. The Woodland track and field teams swept the 2018 Bartow County Track & Field Championship titles Wednesday at Cartersville High School. The Woodland girls scored 120 points followed by Cartersville (58 points), Cass (45 points), and Adairsville with 15 points. In the boys meet, Woodland scored 119.5 points to finish ahead of Cass (57.5 points), Cartersville (50 points) and Adairsville with 21 points. 2018 Bartow County Track & Field Championship event results:

The Cass High School girls soccer team locked up a state playoff berth Wednesday night with a 6-0 blanking of Hiram. The Cass boys also had their way Wednesday in a 9-2 victory over the visiting Hornets. Logan Vermaas had a hat trick of goals for the Lady Colonels and assisted Jaden Musacchio on the game’s first score with a corner kick. Lupita Pineda and Maddie Shook added goals for Cass. Briana Ochoa, Morgan Delarm, and Hannah Johnson each had one assist. Senior Brianna Bullock and freshman Yecenia Hernandez split time in goal to record the shutout. The Lady Colonels (6-7, 5-2) play their final Region 7-AAAAA game at home Friday against Kell and will have non-region games with Darlington, North Springs, Calhoun, and Heritage-Catoosa following Spring Break. (Photo courtesy TCPicsOnline.com) CASS BOYS 9, HIRAM 2 The Colonels rolled to an easy Region 7-AAAAA victory Wednesday night at home with a 9-2 victory over Hiram. Cass, now 5-2 in region action, closes out the region slate at home Friday against Kell. Top scorer Anthony Robledo scored four goals, Carolos Perez scored twice, while Kaleb Speights, Moises Pajarito, and Julio Medina each added one goal each. Julio Medina assisted on three of the Colonels’ scores. Slomi Orozco finished with two assists. Carlos Perez, Javier Duarte, and Robledo added one assist each. Cass keeper Isai Romero picked up the victory in net while recording 16 saves. Following the Kell match and Spring Break, the Colonels have non-region games remaining at North Springs and at home against Calhoun and Heritage-Catoosa.

The Adairsville Tigers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday evening for a come-from-behind 4-2 win over visiting Class AAA 10th-ranked Calhoun. Calhoun took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and Adairsville cut that lead in half with a run in the second inning. The score remained 2-1 until the Tigers’ half of the sixth. Kyler Pelfrey got the Tigers’ decisive inning started with a one-out triple. He later scored on a RBI single by Hunter Hice to tie the game 2-2. Garrett Mishoe followed with a double and he and Hice eventually scored on passed balls for a 4-2 lead. Caden Gibbs (6.1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 0BB, 5K) earned the pitching victory by working into the seventh inning. Pelfrey earned a save by retiring the final two outs. Matthew Williams led Calhoun’s offense with two hits and two RBI. Mishoe had two hits for Adairsville with one RBI. Landon Ayers (RBI), BJ Roper, Trace Still, Hice (RBI), Gibbs, and Pelfrey had the other Tigers’ hits. The loss dropped Calhoun to 11-6 overall and 4-4 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (12-6, 5-3) plays a region game at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday at 5:55 p.m. WOODLAND 7, ROME 1 After dropping a one-run decision to Rome Monday, the Woodland Wildcats started strong and supported a solid pitching performance by Koby Stansel to earn a split with the Wolves and even their season and Region 7-AAAAA marks with a 7-1 win Wednesday night. Woodland scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead and added four more in the fifth inning. Stansel scattered four hits and two walks in his complete-game win. He fanned three and the Wolves’ only run was unearned. Bailey Ward (2 RBI), Chris Mills (2 RBI), Garrett Cornett, and Stansel had two hits each for Woodland. Marco Haro (3 RBI), Dylan Webb, and Toby Queen added one hit apiece. With the loss, Rome falls to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (10-10, 3-3) travels to Villa Rica Friday and will host Villa Rica on Monday. Both games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m. starts. CARROLLTON 9, CASS 2 Class 5A 3rd-ranked Carrollton raced to a 7-0 lead through five innings Wednesday night and defeated visiting Cass 9-2. The Colonels committed five errors in the game making six of the Trojans’ runs unearned. Rhett Daniel (4.2 IP, 0R, 7H, 2BB, 7K) earned the pitching won for Carrollton by working into the fifth inning. Ryan Anderson (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) and Brock Britton (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) closed out the game for the Trojans. Steven Spell (3 IP, 6R, 1ER, 0BB) started on the mound for Cass and took the loss. Blaine Ingram (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3BB, 2K) and Thomas Botts (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB) pitched in relief. Destine Udombon and Charlie Lanier helped lead Carrollton with two hits and two RBI each. Jared Aldridge and Chris Gaiter also had two hits. Nathan Smith went 3-for-3 for Cass in the loss. Matt Shook and Logan Nelson added two hits apiece. Clay Means, Austin Baker, and Bryson Markley had one hit each. Carrollton improved to 19-3 overall and 9-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (9-12, 3-6) will look to bounce back at home Friday against Rome at 5:55 p.m. and will travel to Class AA 2nd-ranked Rockmart Saturday.

West Georgia Tech batted around and scored six runs in the seventh inning Wednesday afternoon in Carrollton as the Golden Knights defeated Georgia Highlands 8-5 in a GCAA conference tilt. Three singles, an error, a walk, and two hit batsmen generated the rally for West Georgia Tech who trailed 3-2 going into the seventh, but headed to the eighth leading 8-3. The visiting Chargers scored a pair of runs in the eighth, but it was not enough. Both teams produced seven hits in the game. Zach Miller had two hits including a double and two RBI for Georgia Highlands. Skylar McPhee had two hits. Cameron Hearn, Parker Orr (RBI), and Willis Kemp (RBI) added the other Chargers’ hits. Seven different Knights had one hit each. Jacob Warren finished with two RBI. Jacob Henley (0.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 1BB) was tagged with the pitching loss for GHC in relief of starter Matt Norton (6 IP, 5R, 3ER, 6H, 1BB, 4K). McPhee (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H) and Dalton Bradford (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) also took the mound during the final two innings for the Chargers. Austin Smith (4 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 3K) was the winning pitcher for WGTCC in relief of starter Avery Smith (5 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 5BB, 4K). West Georgia Tech improved to 14-21 overall and 5-10 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association games. Georgia Highlands (23-11, 9-6) slipped to third place, 2.5 games back of conference leader East Georgia CC with the loss. The Chargers host Gordon State in a conference matchup Friday night at LakePoint at 6 p.m.

The Woodland soccer teams dropped a pair of Region 7-AAAAA games Tuesday night and the Adairsville boys played Central-Carroll to a scoreless draw in non-region action. VILLA RICA GIRLS 3, WOODLAND 2 Visiting Villa Rica led 3-1 at halftime and held off the home-standing Lady Cats, 3-2 in a Region 7-AAAAA match Tuesday night. Kaitlin Winnenberg and Molly Plott scored the Woodland goals. The Lady Cats hit the pitch again after Spring Break when they will face Heritage-Catoosa on April 10. Woodland (5-7-1, 2-5) also has one region game remaining against standings leader Carrollton. VILLA RICA BOYS 5, WOODLAND 0 The two teams of Wildcats battled deep into the second half with the game tied 0-0, but visiting Villa Rica broke the ice and later added four more goals in a Region 7-AAAAA win Tuesday at Woodland. Woodland (6-6-1, 5-3) plays at Heritage-Catoosa after Spring Break on April 10 and will host region foe Carrollton April 13. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0, CENTRAL-CARROLL 0 Adairsville keeper Nic Jackson collected 18 saves Tuesday night as the Tigers played Central-Carroll to a 0-0 tie in non-region action. Adairsville has a 3-1 Region 6-AAA record and returns to region action at home Thursday against Sonoraville.

The Cartersville boys tennis team won four of five lines Tuesday while defeating Calhoun and although the Lady Canes were defeated by the Jackets -- the Cartersville girls had three matches that could have gone the other way in a 1-4 loss. Clemson’s football team is continuing spring practices and former Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence keeps making his presence known. Lawrence is one of four quarterbacks that are getting reps with this first team at the quarterback position this spring. He is battling with last year’s starter Kelly Bryant, sophomore Hunter Johnson and redshirt freshman Chase Brice.
