Several players from Cass and Woodland were recently named by region coaches to the 2017 All-Region 7-AAAAA Team. Cass offensive lineman Seven Richards and linebacker Tripp Breeden were first team All-Region selections along with Woodland defensive back Titus Jones. Second team selections included defensive lineman Kurtis Feanny and tight end Zach Pitner of Woodland. From Cass, defensive end Rodney Richards, linebacker Eathan Mitchell, and safety Evan Hinton were chosen as second team representatives. Rome had 17 first- and second-team selections including Player of the Year Knox Kadum (QB), Defensive Player of the Year Ja’Quan Griffin (DL), and Special Teams Player of the Year Montreal Millsaps. Rome’s John Reid was Coach of the Year. Jaylan Thomas of Carrollton and Marcel Murray of Hiram shared Offensive Player of the Year honors. Honorable mentions for Cass included Cameron Gonyea, Thomas Gilliam, Ahijah Blackwell, Johnny Bootz, James Perry, Zach Hall, Tyrese Dawson, Blake Carrington, Demarco Moore and Macland Shay. Honorable mentions for Woodland included Brody Williams, Justice Carter, Demarcus Williams, Austin Costlow, Austin Potter, Seth Johnson, Blake Cash, Dustin Ivie and Jaylen Ballard.

The Cass High School basketball teams were swept in Region 7-AAAAA games Wednesday night at Rome High School. The Lady Colonels fell 71-51 to the 9th-ranked Lady Wolves, while the Colonels were edged in the nightcap, 57-56, in overtime. In the girls game, Rome led 18-9 through one quarter and pushed the lead to 15 points by halftime on their way to a 20-point victory. Chanel Clemmon led the Lady Colonels with 11 points. Sharia Wade and Payton Stoddard followed with nine each. Amber Brittian scored seven, Lyric Curtis six, and Kyla Michienzi five points. The loss by the Colonels in the boys game snapped a four-game win streak. Both Cass teams are now 9-4 on the season and 3-2 in region play. The Lady Colonels and Colonels travel to Carrollton Friday for a 6 p.m. start.

For the second year in a row, Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence is the 2017 Elite Athlete of the Year presented by Elite Stone Supply. The 6-6, 209-pound high school All-American threw for 3,296 yards and 41 touchdowns this season with one interception. His career stats surpassed Deshaun Watson as the all-time passing leader in Georgia high school football history with 14,352 passing yards and 161 career touchdown passes. The Purple Hurricanes were 41-1 with two state titles in his last three seasons and 53-3 during his career. Lawrence is an early graduate of Cartersville High School and enrolls this month to begin classes at Clemson University. The early enrollment allows him to begin working directly with the Clemson coaching staff and participate in Spring football drills. The Hurricanes' standout took advantage of the first-ever Collegiate Commissioners Association early signing day on December 20 to sign with the Clemson Tigers instead of waiting until February. He will be participating this Saturday (January 6) in one of the nation’s premier high school all-star games — The US Army All-American Bowl — at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. Lawrence is a member of the East all-star team and Cartersville head coach Joey King is the East team’s offensive coordinator. The game will be televised on NBC at 1 p.m. Lawrence has been labeled the top pro-style passing quarterback in the nation by various recruiting services for much of the past three years. He is lauded for his high football IQ, terrific arm strength, great decision-making ability, and throwing accuracy. Lawrence will compete with an impressive group of quarterbacks for playing time in 2018, assuming there are no transfers. Tigers’ starting quarterback Kelly Bryant is returning, along with former four-star recruit Zerrick Cooper, five-star quarterback Hunter Johnson and three-star quarterback Chase Brice. The 247Sports evaluation of Lawrence: “Lawrence just has ‘it’. Not only does he has have the prototypical size , but he has a big arm, he is very mature for his age, and he has the intangibles. He can make any throw you want a top quarterback to make. Not only does the ball pop coming out of his hands, but he throws with great touch. He throws a great deep ball and he makes the swing passes look easy. Lawrence is still a little lean, so he needs to add mass to his frame, but he stands tall in the pocket and that weight will come in time. For a big, tall quarterback, his release is quick and compact. He is more mobile than most expect him to be. He throws with accuracy on the move and he can extend a play. The Cass boys took control early and cruised to a 54-29 Region 7-AAAAA victory Tuesday night over visiting Woodland. The Wildcats led 5-4 after one quarter, but the Colonels took a 22-10 lead by halftime and led 45-16 through three quarters. Carter Hedden and Justice Hayes led Cass with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Ethan Carter scored eight points. Ashton Burley and Markeldrick Powell added five points apiece. Steven Spell contributed four and Braxton Benham three for the Colonels. Jaylen Ballard scored nine points to lead Woodland scorers. Charles Norman posted five points. Dustin Ivie and Justice Carter scored four points each. RJ Beaubrun added three points. Kyjuan McLendon and Connor Gallagher scored two points apiece. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 60, CEDARTOWN 32 The Cartersville boys started Region 5-AAAA play Tuesday night at home with a 60-34 victory over Cedartown. The Canes led 17-10 after one quarter, 29-16 at the intermission, and 41-26 through three periods. JKobe Orr had a game-high 15 points for Cartersville. He was followed by Jaylon Pugh with nine and T.J. Horton and Perignon Dyer with eight points each. Luke Schiltz scored seven. Marko Dudley added four. Isaac Gridley scored three points. Marqual Coaxum, Taywuan Johnson, and Grant Harris contributed two points apiece. Cedartown (6-6, 0-1) was led by Zahquan Frazier with 14 points. Trevon Wofford added nine for the Bulldogs. The Cass girls raced out to 20-3 lead in the first eight minute and led 35-11 at halftime on their way to a 60-24 Region 7-AAAAA win over county-rival Woodland at home Tuesday night. The Lady Colonels had 11 players in the scoring column not including Chanel Clemmons who contributed five blocked shots and seven rebounds. Lyric Curtis led Cass with 10 points. She was followed by Kyla Michienzi, Alexis Wade and Aaliyah Curtis with nine each. Sharia Wade, Amber Brittian, and Brianna Stephenson contributed five points each. Payton Stoddard scored five. CEDARTOWN GIRLS 41, CARTERSVILLE 40 Cio Siegler scored a game-high 18 points and the Lady Canes jumped out to an early lead Tuesday night at the Storm Center against Cedartown, but dropped a heartbreaker to the Lady Bulldogs, 41-40. Tamerra Beman and Keke Turner led Cedartown with 15 and 12 points, respectively. The Lady Canes led 15-4 after one quarter and held a 25-20 lead at halftime before Cedartown rallied to take a 32-31 lead going into the final period. Kalli Scheff scored eight points for Cartersville. Jada Cunningham and London Shaw added four points each. Addi Smith, Naijah Evans, and Ariana Cochran contributed two points each. Cartersville played without point guard Amaya Davis nursing a sprained ankle. Cedartown improved to 7-5 overall and is now 1-0 in Region 5-AAAA. A pair of former Adairsville High School athletes are featured in this week’s ‘Athletes Beyond Bartow’ update. Outside linebacker Vic Beasley sacked Cam Newton late in the fourth quarter Sunday as the Atlanta Falcons secured the NFC’s final playoff berth with a 22-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The sack came in the final two minutes as the Panthers were trying to rally. On the collegiate level, former Tigers’ quarterback Marcus Childers wrapped up his freshman campaign at Northern Illinois. The Huskies, however, lost to Duke in their bowl game. NFL VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (3rd yr.; LB, Clemson University; Adairsville HS)… one sack of Carolina quarterback Cam Newton Sunday as Atlanta qualified for the NFL playoffs with a 22-10 home win over the Panthers. Beasley completed the regular season with 29 tackles (23 solo) and five sacks. He missed two games nursing injury earlier in the season and started nine games. Atlanta (10-6) opens the post-season Saturday night in the NFC Wild Card round at the LA Rams. COLLEGE FOOTBALL MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois University (Fr., QB, Adairsville HS)… he was 15-for-26 for 234 yards and one touchdown and rushed 11 times for 19 yards, but his Huskies lost to Duke 36-14 in the Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit last Tuesday. In 12 games played this season, Childers was 152-for-265 for 1,674 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also rushed for 473 net yards and five touchdowns. NIU was 8-5 this season. COLLEGE BASKETBALL RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… recorded a double-double with a team-high 26 points and 11 rebounds in a 95-80 loss at Peach Belt Conference foe Young Harris Saturday. It was the Patriots first loss of the season. Davis is averaging 14.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He leads the Patriots in assists and steals. FMU (8-1) plays at USC-Aiken Wednesday before hosting Clayton State this Saturday afternoon. JANA MORNING — Berry College (Fr., G, Cass HS)… scored four points with a pair of rebounds, one steal, and one assist, but the Lady Vikings lost Saturday at Emory 78-65. Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence and his head coach Joey King will be featured participants Saturday, January 6 at the 18th US Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The Hurricanes’ duo will be part of the East all-star team. Former Cass player and Woodland coach, Todd Wofford, is also part of the East coaching staff. Now the head football coach at Central Gwinnett High School in Lawrenceville, Wofford also has a quarterback on the East roster. Lawrence, who was also named the 2017 Georgia Sports Writers Association All-Classification Player of the Year this week, graduated high school early and has signed with Clemson University. The nationally televised game will air Saturday on NBC at 1 p.m. Lawrence passed for 13,902 yards in high school and tossed 161 touchdowns with only 21 interceptions. He also rushed for 707 yards in his prep career. Canes’ head coach Joey King has amassed an impressive mark in his four years as a head coach — all at Cartersville. His teams are 53-3 in four seasons and won back-to-back state titles in 2015 and 2016. King will be the offensive coordinator on the US Army East all-star team coaching staff. Wofford has been the head coach at Central Gwinnett since 2010. His teams are 39-46 in eight seasons playing in the state’s largest classification. GEORGIA ELITE CLASSIC GAMES One of the all-star games involving local athletes this past weekend was the Georgia Elite Classic. The grade-level prep all-star games included some of the top prep talent across the state. Locally, freshman linebacker/running back Harrison Allen, sophomore quarterback Tee Webb and junior defensive end Isaiah Chaney represented Cartersville; sophomore offensive lineman Johnny Bootz and athlete Zay Jackson represented Cass; and freshman defensive lineman Nick Bailey,

The Adairsville boys won the third place game Saturday at the Mountain Top Tournament in Blue Ridge. The Tigers defeated the host Fannin County Rebels 56-37. Hunter Hice led Adairsville with 20 points while eight other Tigers contributed in the scoring column. Ethan Belcher scored seven points. Mason Boswell, Cody Henderson, and Malachi Gardner scored six each. Savaun Henderson added five points. Grayson Dailey scored three. Jessie O’Kelley finished with two points and Connor Crunkelton one. Chandler Kendall and Payton Holt led Fannin (1-12) with eight and seven points, respectively. The Tigers led 29-24 at halftime and 41-33 after three quarters before pulling away for a 19-point win. Adairsville (7-7) hosts Region 6-AAA North rival Calhoun Friday, January 5.

A late rally by the Cartersville Hurricanes and a 38-point performance by the Canes’ Furman University commit, Jaylon Pugh, was not enough to overcome Millbrook of Raleigh, NC Friday night in the consolation semifinals of the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School. Cartersville trailed 33-26 at halftime and 52-38 after three quarters, but surged back in the fourth quarter to narrow the margin to 63-59 before Millbrook closed out the 70-63 win. Adrian Scarborough scored 17 and Jabari Brown 14 points to lead Millbrook. The Wildcats improved to 7-5 on the year. For Cartersville, Pugh’s hot shooting night included nine three-pointers and an 18-point outburst in the fourth quarter. T.J. Horton added 10 points for the Canes. Cartersville (7-2) will host Cedartown in a Region 5-AAAA matchup Tuesday, Jan. 2 at the Storm Center. The girls’ game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The Cass Colonels used a balanced scoring attack and knocked off the host Chattooga Indians 54-43 to win the Chattooga Christmas Classic championship Friday night in Summerville. Three Colonels reached double figures in scoring led by Mark Chester with 12 points. Nine of his points came on a trio of first quarter three-pointers. Tournament MVP Ashton Burley followed with 11 points and Justice Hayes — who was also named to the All-Tournament Team — added 10 points for Cass. Markeldrick Powell scored nine, Ethan Carter eight, and Carter Hedden added four points for the Colonels. Cass took a 16-13 lead after one quarter, led 30-20 at halftime, and maintained a 39-31 lead through three quarters on their way to an 11-point victory. Chattooga (10-2, 7th-ranked in Class AA) had only one other loss this season. It was a one-point, overtime loss to LaFayette in the Cherokee, AL tournament before Christmas. Cass had tournament wins over Calhoun and Chattahoochee to reach the finals against the host Indians. The Colonels (8-3) host county-rival Woodland Tuesday. The girls game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the boys to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The Woodland boys basketball team snapped a losing streak Friday in Trion while the Adairsville boys were edged in their tournament at Fannin County High School. WOODLAND BOYS 49, GORDON LEE 39 The Woodland boys snapped a nine-game losing streak and defeated Gordon Lee 49-39 Friday as part of the Trion Invitational at Trion High School. The Wildcats led 11-9 after one quarter and 21-16 at halftime. They pushed their advantage to 38-27 after three quarters. Hunter Johnson led Woodland with 15 points followed by Jaylen Ballard with eight and Justice Carter with six points. Charles Norman and Connor Gallagher added five points apiece. Jacob Dyer led the Gordon Lee with 10 points. Hayden Murphy scored eight for the Trojans. Woodland (2-9) plays at Cass Tuesday night. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CHRISTIAN HERITAGE BOYS 59, ADAIRSVILLE 58 The Adairsville boys were edged by Christian Heritage 59-58 Friday in a semifinal game of the Mountain Top Tournament in Blue Ridge. The loss ended the Tigers' win streak at four games. Adairsville led 29-28 at halftime, but Christian Heritage (12-0) took a six point lead heading into the final period. Cody Henderson scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Tigers. Hunter Hice scored 10 points, followed by Mason Boswell with eight and Ethan Belcher with seven points. Savaun Henderson, Malachi Gardner, and Grayson Dailey each added three points for Adairsville. Christian Koneman led the Lions with 19 points. Sam Dindoffer and Zach Gentry followed with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Adairsville (5-7) will play in a third place consolation game Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against the Gilmer/Fannin loser.

The Cass Lady Colonels rebounded from an overtime, semifinal loss Thursday in the Chattooga Christmas Classic to win the third place game Friday in dominating fashion over host Chattooga. In other girls action Friday, Cartersville and Adairsville suffered losses. CASS GIRLS 74, CHATTOOGA 37 The Lady Colonels overwhelmed host Chattooga 74-37 in the third place game of the Chattooga Christmas Classic. Cass took a 17-6 lead after one quarter, extended their lead to 35-14 at halftime, and led 59-29 through three quarters. Aaliyah Curtis led the Lady Colonels with 12 points. Lyric Curtis, who was named to the all-tournament team, followed with 10 points. Sharia Wade and Kyla Michienzi scored nine points each. Alexis Ware and Payton Stoddard contributed eight each. Amber Brittian and Kyler Trouten each scored six. Londaisha Smith, Damia Simpson, and Chanel Clemmons added two points apiece. Reagan Broome led Chattooga (4-6) with eight points. Cass (8-3) hosts Woodland Tuesday at 6 p.m. ALLATOONA GIRLS 43, CARTERSVILLE 37 The Lady Canes led into the fourth quarter, but committed 21 turnovers Friday in the second half during a 43-37 loss to Allatoona at the Sonoraville Classic in Calhoun. Cartersville held a 21-14 lead at halftime and was up 29-27 after three quarters, before the Lady Buccaneers outscored them 16-8 in the fourth period. Kalli Scheff led Cartersville with 10 points. Jada Cunningham followed with eight points. Lauren Davenport had a game-high 14 points to lead Allatoona (2-9). Cartersville (5-5) hosts Cedartown at the Storm Center Tuesday night at 6 p.m. CHRISTIAN HERITAGE GIRLS 79, ADAIRSVILLE 43 Christian Heritage ran out to a 22-8 lead in the first quarter and controlled the contest throughout in defeating Adairsville 79-43 in a consolation game at the Mountain Top Tournament at Fannin County Friday. The Lady Lions led 50-19 at halftime. Josie Summerville led the Lady Tigers with 17 points. Havyn Isaac scored five, Nakiyah Washington four, and Coriana McDaniel two points. Adairsville (2-11) returns to action next Friday at home against Calhoun. The Region 6-AAA North game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip.
