The Adairsville boys basketball team lost to Sequoyah 76-58 in the Tigers’ final game at the Dalton Thanksgiving Tournament Wednesday evening. Sequoyah held a 17-12 lead after one period and was up 29-24 at the intermission. The Chiefs extended their lead to 58-47 after three quarters on their way to an 18-point win. Myles McGee led all scorers with 22 points for Sequoyah (1-2). Jackson Greco and Arthur Parker totaled 14 each. Donovan Shipp added 10 for the Chiefs. Hunter Hice led Adairsville with 18 points. Cody Henderson scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half for the Tigers. Ethan Belcher finished with 10 points. Savaun Henderson posted five points. MODEL GIRLS 63, ADAIRSVILLE 27 The Adairsville girls lost their final game at the Northwest Whitfield Thanksgiving Tournament Wednesday, falling to Class AA 4th-ranked Model 63-27. Model (3-1) led at all quarter stops, 14-7 after one quarter, 25-11 at halftime, and 44-17 after three quarters. Victoria Sexton led Model with a game-high 32 points. Chezne McConnell led the Lady Tigers with six points. Nakiyah Washington, Jileyah Mitchell, and Alexa Varner each scored four points. Havyn Isaac contributed three points, while Zay Harris and Josie Summerville added two points apiece. The Woodland and Adairsville girls basketball teams picked up their first wins of the year Tuesday night, while the Cass boys also added a victory. The Cartersville girls, Woodland boys, and Adairsville boys each lost contests. WOODLAND GIRLS 48, ALLATOONA 44 The Woodland Lady Cats bounced back from a pair of losses to open the season and won at Allatoona Tuesday evening 48-44. A tight game throughout, Allatoona held a 14-8 lead after one period and led 23-20 at halftime. Woodland battled back to tie the game after three periods at 35-35 and outscored the Lady Bucs 13-9 over the final eight minutes for the four point victory. Whitney Harris led Woodland with 15 points with nine coming on a trio of three-pointers in the second half. Carli Clymer scored eight points for the Lady Cats, followed by Nickiah Metcalf with seven, six by Madgie Robinson, five by Lauren Morris, four by Morgan Cooper, and three by Ansley Evans. Carley Cox and Sammy Roembke led Allatoona with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Allatoona fell to 1-1 with the loss. Woodland (1-1) hosts Kell in their Region 7-AAAAA opener on Friday, December 1. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 49, DADE COUNTY 41 The Adairsville girls surged to a 35-21 lead in the first half and held on for a 49-41 victory over Dade County Tuesday at the Northwest Whitfield Thanksgiving Tournament in Tunnel Hill for their initial win of the 2017-18 season. The game was tied 15-15 after one quarter, but the Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Wolverines 20-6 in the second period to grab a 14 point lead at the intermission. Dade County (0-4) narrowed the margin to 40-33 after three periods. Megan Schauer led Dade County with 11 points. Adairsville got 11 points from Nakiyah Washington and 10 from Zay Harris. Josie Summerville follwed with nine points. Havyn Isaac scored six. Breeana Wilson contributed five points. Chezne McConnell scored four, Coriana McDaniel three, and Alexa Varner one point for the Lady Tigers. CASS BOYS 48, SOUTH PAULDING 43 The Cass boys defeating visiting Class 6A South Paulding Tuesday night, 48-43. The Colonels led 13-5 after one period and held a 24-17 lead at halftime. Cass added to their lead in the third period to go up 32-21 and held off the Spartans in the final period for a five-point win. Justice Hayes led Cass with 13 points. He was followed by Ashton Burley with 10 points. Ethan Carter contributed nine. Markeldrick Powell and Mark Chester added eight points each for the Colonels. Cam Armstrong led South Paulding (0-2) with 22 points. Cass (2-1) opens Region 7-AAAAA play Friday, December 1 at Rome and hosts Villa Rica on Saturday, December 2. SONORAVILLE GIRLS 51, CARTERSVILLE 32 The Cartersville girls lost to Sonoraville 51-32 Tuesday night at the Armuchee Thanksgiving Classic. Maliyah Parks led Sonoraville (1-1) in scoring with 14 points. Cio Seigler led the Lady Canes with 12 points. SPRAYBERRY BOYS 86, WOODLAND 42 The Woodland boys basketball team dropped an 86-42 decision to Sprayberry Tuesday afternoon at the Paulding County Hoopsgiving Tournament in Dallas. Sprayberry (2-3) led 24-14 after one quarter and extended that lead to 45-21 by halftime. Khadim Samb led three Yellow Jackets in double figures with 17 points. Saigon Kitt and Matt Jenkins added 14 and 12 points, respectively. The Hurricanes, out of Ooltewah, TN, led the Tigers 17-6 after one period and held a 45-20 advantage at the intermission. East Hamilton (2-1) had five players in double figures in scoring, led by Cameron Montgomery with 20, Andrew Williams 18, Justin Dozier 15, Davae Hughley 14, and Vandrele Wilson with 10 points. Ethan Belcher scored 11 points to lead the Tigers’ scoring. The Lady Tigers (0-2) dropped a decision to Armuchee and fell again Monday to Class AAAA state power Northwest Whitfield at the Border Wars Thanksgiving Tournament in Tunnel Hill. Cartersville native and Colorado Rockies prospect Sam Howard was one of four players added to the Rockies’ 40-man roster before the reserves deadline Monday. The move protects left-handed pitcher Howard, right-handed pitcher Jesus Tinoco, catcher Chris Rabago, and outfielder Yonathan Daza from the Rule 5 draft at the upcoming winter meetings. Howard was a Spring Training invitee in 2017 for the Rockies and the southpaw responded with a strong season for Double-A Hartford and Triple-A Albuquerque. The former Cartersville Hurricanes and Georgia Southern Eagles starter is one of Colorado’s top pitching prospects and is expected to begin 2018 again with the Isotopes in Albuquerque. Howard, 24, was a third round draft selection for the Rockies in 2014. In four minor league seasons with five different teams, Howard is 26-29 in 90 games (88 starts) with a 3.59 ERA in 470 innings pitched. He has 408 minor league career strikeouts and only 137 walks. Last season at Triple-A, he was 4-4 in 14 starts with a 3.89 ERA.

The Woodland boys basketball team lost to North Cobb 61-24 Monday afternoon at the Paulding County High School Hoopsgiving Classic. North Cobb led 7-6 after one quarter and outscored the Wildcats 23-6 in the second period to take a 30-12 lead at halftime. The Warriors then posted 23 more points in the third quarter to lead 53-19 on their way to a 37-point decision. Freddy Woods led North Cobb with 16 points. Kevin Hester scored nine while Trent Lee and Keanu White dropped in eight points each for the Warriors. RJ Beaubrun was the top scorer for Woodland with seven points. Justice Carter scored five. Dawson Wilkins and Kenny Jinks added three points each. Charles Norman and Jaden Johnson finished with two points apiece. DiAnthony Heathcock and Hunter Johnson added one point each for the Wildcats. North Cobb evened its season mark at 1-1 following a Saturday loss to host Paulding County. Fields, who was named Southern Athletic Association Runner of the Year, led Rhodes to their third appearance in the NCAA Championship in school history. VOLLEYBALL KATIE O’CONNOR — Western Carolina University (Sr., MB, Cartersville HS)… she was named Second Team All-Southern Conference for the 2017 season. She had seven kills, two digs, and one block last Friday as the Catamounts were eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament by East Tennessee State in straight sets at home. O’Connor was one of five seniors to close out their careers for WCU. The Catamounts completed the season with an 11-19 mark. O’Connor finished her senior season with 279 kills (.390), four assists, 28 digs, and 103 total blocks. For her career, she had 816 kills (.390), 16 assists, 101 digs, and 434 total blocks. WRESTLING HUNTER QUINN — Emmanuel College (Soph., 157-lb. wt. class, Cass HS)… reached the finals of his weight class at the 2017 Georgia Open hosted by Emmanuel College this past Saturday before falling to teammate Jay Sheppard by major decision. Quinn had three consecutive wins to reach the finals and finished 3-1 in the tournament. The Cass wrestling team won a highly-regarded tournament for the second weekend in a row by capturing the Blackbeard Duals title at Allatoona High School Saturday evening. The Allatoona tournament regularly includes some of the top competition in North Georgia and this year’s event was no different. Cass had wins over Union Grove and Sprayberry to finish first in their pool. The Colonels then defeated Etowah and North Paulding to reach the finals where they edged Gilmer for the tournament championship. Cass 52, Union Grove 29 Cass avenged a state tournament loss to last year’s state runner-up in Class 5A. The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department U10 Girls Soccer team defeated Dalton 3-0 and Calhoun 5-0 Saturday in Dalton to win the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) District 5 championship. Emma Edwards, Anna Grace Weathers, and Summerlyn Smith scored goals for U10 Bartow in the victory over Dalton. Ella Edwards (2), Emma Edwards, Ryland Platt, and Smith scored the Bartow goals in the defeat of Calhoun. Zander Hamilton scored all 16 of his points in the second half and Malik Shields led Thomson with 21 points as the Bulldogs handed the Cass boys their first loss of the 2017-18 season at the Evans Tip-Off Classic Saturday afternoon near Augusta. The Colonels trailed 20-12 after one quarter and 30-26 at halftime, but the offensive surge from Hamilton helped the Bulldogs to a 50-38 lead after three quarters and the eventual 10-point win. Aubrey Ivery added 11 points for Thomson and Quay Jackson had nine. Mark Chester led Cass with 16 points. He was followed by Justice Hayes and Ashton Burley with 15 and 12, respectively. The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department 8U, 10U, and 12U youth football all-stars each won Saturday to secure 2017 Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) District 5 championship titles at Dellinger Park. Defense ruled the day for Cartersville. All three Cartersville teams shutout their championship game opponent. PHOTO: Cartersville 10U all-stars 8U CARTERSVILLE 12, DALTON 0 The Cartersville 8U youth football all-stars blanked Dalton Saturday 12-0 at Dellinger Park to win GRPA District 5 and advance to the GRPA state championship game. Dixon Lindsey threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Clint Hosea and Jovani Bautista-Jackson sprinted to a 36-yard touchdown run to account for Cartersville’s scoring. Dalton finished District 5 play with a 3-1 mark. In addition to Saturday’s win, Cartersville (3-0) had District 5 wins over Gordon County 33-0 and Calhoun 26-6 on their way to the title. The GRPA state championship game is scheduled for Saturday, December 2 in Savannah’s Grayson Stadium at 10 a.m. against the District 2 champion. 10U CARTERSVILLE 6, BARTOW COUNTY 0 Brodie McWhorter scored the game’s only points on a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter as 10U Cartersville edged Bartow County 6-0 Saturday at Dellinger Park. Bartow had the ball first and goal on the Cartersville eight yard line following a turnover in the second quarter, but Cartersville’s defense led by Bear McWhorter and Landon Heath throughout the day kept Bartow out of the end zone. Bartow (3-1) had it’s season come to an end, but had wins in District 5 play over Calhoun 20-14, Gordon County 39-0, and Dalton 18-8. Cartersville (3-0) also had District 5 wins over Gordon County 44-0 and Calhoun 30-16 and now advances to the GRPA state championship game in Savannah. The title game is scheduled for Saturday, December 2 in Grayson Stadium at 12 noon against the District 2 champion. 12U CARTERSVILLE 36, DALTON 0 Khristian Lando scored on touchdown runs of 7-, 52-, and 23-yards to help lead Cartersville to a 36-0 shutout of Dalton in the 12U GRPA District 5 championship game. Trevor Harris added a 41-yard touchdown run, Brelace Williams tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Harris, and Tae Cochran converted three PATs for Cartersville. Cartersville (3-0) also had GRPA District 5 wins over Gordon County 46-0 and Calhoun 28-16. Dalton finished play in District 5 with a 2-2 mark. The GRPA state championship game is scheduled for Saturday, December 2 in Savannah’s Grayson Stadium at 2 p.m. against the District 2 champion.
