Cartersville High School senior quarterback Trevor Lawrence had a record setting night Friday as the Canes' cruised to a Region 5-AAAA victory over Chapel Hill, 62-0, on Senior Night. Lawrence is now the career passing yardage leader in Georgia high school football history and is only one TD pass short of tying the record for most TD passes with a regular season game at Troup remaining November 3 and then the post-season. Both records were/are held by Deshaun Watson who now plays for the Houston Texans by way of Clemson University and Gainesville (GA) High School. The Purple Hurricanes' signal-caller now sits at 13,254 passing yards and has 154 TD passes. Lawrence (6-6, 205, Clemson commit) is now 48-1 as a starter for the two-time defending state champions and the Hurricanes have won 39 games in a row. Playing only the first half, Lawrence completed 17-of-23 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns, leading Cartersville to touchdowns on seven of its eight first-half possessions. The Cartersville Lady Canes volleyball team won the opening set Saturday afternoon, but eventually fell to Woodward Academy three sets to one in the Class AAA best-of-five set state quarterfinals in College Park. The third-seeded War Eagles advance to state semifinals with their 13-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-22 win. Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran was pleased with the effort made by his team Saturday. "I was very pleased with the way our girls battled," noted Cothran. "There is not a bit of quit in these young ladies. We fought with everything we had today against a very good Woodward Academy team." The head coach also spoke about his graduating class. "It's sad seeing a group of seniors have their careers ended, but there's certainly some consolation in knowing they played hard and executed on a very high level. There were very few things we could've done differently. There were a few mistakes here and there, but we made (Woodward Academy) earn just about everything." Cartersville senior quarterback Trevor Lawrence became the career passing yardage leader in Georgia Friday night as the Purple Hurricanes won for the 39th straight time and defeated visiting Chapel Hill, 62-0. Lawrence, who needed only 105 yards to set the new mark, surpassed the career passing yardage mark of Deshaun Watson (Gainesville High School, Clemson University, Houston Texans) in the first quarter. Lawrence had touchdown passes to Rico Frye and E.J. Turner in the first quarter that sandwiched a two-yard touchdown run by Terry Berdin. The pass to Turner was the record-breaker and the game was stopped briefly to recognize the accomplishment in front of the large Hurricanes’ Senior Night home crowd. Rico Frye had second quarter touchdown runs of 59 yards and 71 yards, while Lawrence connected on additional touchdown passes to J’Kobe Orr and Turner for a 49-0 halftime lead. Kaleb Chatmon scored on a 10-yard run in the third quarter and Canes’ freshman Harrison Allen added a 26-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for a 62-0 final score. Lawrence finished the night with a 17-for-23 performance for 283 passing yards and four touchdowns. That leaves the Clemson commit only one touchdown shy of tying Watson’s career record for touchdown passes. Cartersville is now one win away from a third consecutive undefeated regular season and a sixth consecutive region championship. The Canes' senior class is now 51-2 along with their head coach Joey King who is in his fourth season at Cartersville. Frye finished with 170 yards rushing, two receptions for 60 yards, and three scores. Orr caught three passes for 110 yards and one score. Turner had four receptions for 52 yards and a pair of scores. T.J. Horton made six catches for 48 yards. Chapel Hill falls to 5-3 overall and 2-2 with the loss. Cartersville (9-0, 5-0) is idle next Friday before wrapping up the regular season November 3 at Troup County. PAULDING COUNTY 38, CASS 20 Paulding County quarterback Brantley Mauldin tossed five touchdown passes and had the Patriots up 31-7 over Cass at halftime Friday night on their way to an 18-point Region 7-AAAAA victory in Dallas. The win keeps Paulding County in contention for a state playoff berth with two region games remaining. The Patriots (4-4, 4-2) play at Carrollton next week and host East Paulding November 3. Cass junior quarterback Rett Moore threw three touchdown passes, including two in the fourth quarter. Tavares Varnum had a 7-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Evan Hinton had a 26-yard touchdown reception and Cameron Gonyea caught a 19-yard strike. Moore finished 7-for-14 with 167 yards in the loss. Cass (0-8, 0-6) hosts Villa Rica next Friday. BREMEN 31, ADAIRSVILLE 13 The Adairsville Tigers led 7th-ranked and undefeated Bremen 13-3 late in the second quarter Friday night, but the visiting Blue Devils rallied for 28 unanswered points over the game’s final 27 minutes to win 31-13. Bremen quarterback Wade Cartwright ran for one touchdown and threw for two more to help lead the Blue Devils to a come-from-behind victory. Cartwright scored on a one-yard run with only 1:25 remaining in the first half to narrow Adairsville’s lead to 13-10 at halftime. He then added touchdown passes of 15 yards to Ben Barrow and 39 yards to Jordan Millelo in the second half. The toss to Mellelo gave Bremen a 24-13 lead with 11:13 remaining in the game and was immediately followed by a successful pooch-kickoff that was recovered by the Blue Devils at the Adairsville 28-yard line. On the next play, Bremen running back Tyran Dobbs raced 28 yards for a touchdown that effectively put the game away. The Tigers never recovered from yielding 14 points in a 10 second span. Dobbs rushed for 272 yards on 39 carries in the game and his 74 yard run just before halftime set up Carwright’s short TD run. Mason Boswell had the only Adairsville touchdown on a one-yard run with 1:44 remaining in the first quarter. His score gave the Tigers a 10-3 lead after Josh Honea added the PAT. Honea also had a 38-yard field goal in the first quarter that put Adairsville up 3-0 and a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter that put the Tigers ahead 13-3. Evan Fuller, who made each of Bremen’s PAT kicks, tied the game 3-3 in the first quarter with a 35-yard field goal. Adairsville (4-4, 1-2) travels to Haralson County next Friday for their final sub-region game and will play at a yet-to-be-determined Region 6-AAA-North opponent on November 3 for a spot in the Class AAA state playoffs.

Each of the three GHSA regions including local teams are moving into their final three weekends of the regular season with some interesting tests ahead for state playoff contenders. Standings provided by Georgia High School Association and rankings by Georgia High School Football Daily and Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Region 7-AAAAA Rome remains the No. 1 ranked team in Class AAAAA and is the leader in Region 7-AAAAA that includes local teams Woodland and Cass. The Wolves, who won the state title in the classification last season, are trailed in the latest rankings by Buford at No. 2. Undefeated teams -- Stockbridge, Warner Robins, and Jones County hold down spots three through five with Region 7-AAAAA challenger Kell ranked sixth with a 4-3 season mark. Bainbridge is No. 7, with Starr's Mill and Wayne County coming in at No. 9 and No. 10. Carrollton, also in Region 7-AAAAA, is out of the top ten this week for the first time this season and gets a chance to return after Friday night. The Trojans play at No. 6 Kell. Meanwhile, top-ranked Rome travels to Villa Rica and playoff contender East Paulding faces a must-win game at Hiram. In other region action Friday night, Cass looks for its initial win of the year at playoff contender Paulding County while Woodland is idle. Region 5-AAAA Cartersville continues its streak as the No. 1 team in Class AAAA following a 63-0 blanking of Sandy Creek. The Canes scored touchdowns on all eight first half drives and rolled up over 400 yards of total offense. Trevor Lawrence was 15-of-19 for 284 yards and four touchdowns in the easy win. The Canes seek their 39th consecutive win Friday night. The streak is in its third season for the two-time defending Class AAAA champs. Lawrence is 118-of-161 passing (.733) this season for 2,360 yards and 30 touchdowns with one interception. He needs 106 yards and six touchdowns to break the Georgia career records of 13,077 yards and 155 TDs held by Deshaun Watson, the now Houston Texans quarterback by way of Clemson University and Gainesville High School. Troup is the other ranked team from Region 5-AAAA. The Tigers (7-0) are led by the state's passing yardage leader so far this season, Montez Crowe. Troup has a key region game Friday night at Cedartown. The other region game is LaGrange at Sandy Creek. As for the remainder of Class AAAA in the polls, Thomson and Marist remain undefeated and are ranked second and third. Blessed Trinity and Jefferson are ranked fourth and fifth. Unbeatens Ridgeland, Burke County, and Troup hold the sixth through eighth spots with Woodward Academy and Mary Persons ranked ninth and tenth. Region 6-AAA Adairsville has been unranked all season, but has an opportunity Friday night to make some noise and reshuffle both their sub-region and Class AAA. The Tigers (4-3, 1-1) host 7th-ranked and undefeated Bremen. The Blue Devils (7-0) have a strong rushing attack offense averaging better than 225 yards per game. Tyran Dobb is Bremen's rushing leader and his twin brother Tyric is also a rushing threat. Wade Cartwright is the quarterback with top receiving targets Jalen Dallas and Ben Barrow. Bremen's defense has also been stout. The Devils yield under 150 total yards per game and less than 100 on the ground. Junior linebackers Campbell Sweatt, Kade Berry, and Brant Ivey (who also doubles as a fullback on offense) have been instrumental. Senior corners Jarvis Buffington and Nate Daniels lead the secondary. Also from Region 6-AAA South, Calhoun (6-1) is the No. 4 ranked team in the state. The Yellow Jackets only loss this season came at Cartersville. Calhoun hosts Sonoraville Friday night and plays Bremen next week. The top four teams from each sub-region in 6-AAA will have a one-game playoff on November 3 to determine the four state playoff representatives. The first place teams play the opposite sub-region's fourth place teams while the second and third place teams also match up. All four games will be hosted by the North sub-region this season regardless of seeding. (Note: All the play-in games were hosted by the South sub-region last year.) Cedar Grove (7-0) is the No. 1 team in Class AAA. The Saints are followed by No. 2 Peach County, No. 3 Greater Atlanta Christian, No. 5 Jenkins, No. 6 Crisp County, No. 8 Lovett, No. 9 Westminster, and No. 10 Morgan County.

The ninth-ranked Lady Canes’ volleyball team defeated visiting Heritage-Catoosa Tuesday night at the Storm Center 25-18, 25-14, and 25-20 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class AAAA state playoffs for the first time in program history. Cartersville (28-3) will play again Saturday against an opponent to be determined by the GHSA volleyball re-seeding committee. The top four of eight remaining teams will host Saturday’s matches. The other teams advancing in Class AAAA (and their final regular season ranking via Score Atlanta / AJC) include top-ranked Blessed Trinity, 2nd-ranked Marist, 3rd-ranked St. Pius X, 4th-ranked Woodward Academy, 6th-ranked Northside-Columbus, Richmond Academy, and Hardaway. In Tuesday’s win, Lady Canes’ coach Dutch Cothran was pleased with his team’s play. “It was a great performance by our ladies tonight,” said Cothran. “After two days of not-so-hot practices, our girls came out with a chip on their shoulders and played very well.” Cothran noted several key performances and was encouraged by his team's cohesiveness. "Lauren Wenzell and Elsa Evans were very steady for us tonight. Catie (Heilman) and Nedu (Evans) each played well, so to have our four main hitters playing that well and our passers doing the things they did was a great feeling. Grace Hunter played possibly her best match of the season and our bench was also amazing. They were so engaged and enthusiastic! I love seeing everybody fulfilling the roles it takes to win and advance!”

Vic Beasley returned to the Atlanta Falcons lineup Sunday and several local collegiate football players made important contributions with their teams this past weekend in this edition of Athletes Beyond Bartow. The collegiate contributions included three former Cartersville High School standouts in the starting offensive lineup for the UNC-Charlotte 49ers. (L-R) T.L.
