Georgia High School Football Daily released its Class AAAA Preseason All-State Team Friday and four Cartersville Purple Hurricanes’ seniors highlight the roster. In all, six Hurricanes have been named to pre-season all-state teams over the past two weeks. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, offensive lineman Nick Root, defensive lineman Darian Poellnitz, and placekicker/punter Jonathan Cruz were selected for the GHSFD preseason honor. Lawrence is on pace to break former Gainesville High School and Clemson University quarterback Deshaun Watson’s state high school records. Lawrence's career stats per MaxPreps.com include 10,601 yards and 120 TD passes with a QB rating of 124. As a junior in 2016, Lawrence threw for 3,904 yards and 51 touchdowns as he led his team to its second straight Class 4A state title. The Hurricanes have a 40-1 record with Lawrence taking snaps. Cartersville running back Rico Frye was also mentioned in the GHSFD release. The senior transfer from Creekside who played at Starrs Mill before that, has 4,886 yards rushing (11.6 yds/carry) and 55 touchdowns in his career despite being limited to only six games last season due to injury. Frye, along with Cartersville wide receiver E.J. Turner were selected last week to the recruitgeorgia.com preseason all-state team. Lawrence, Root, and Cruz also made that list. Turner, a Rutgers commit, is expected to be the top target for Lawrence. He hauled in 36 passes for 635 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2016. Poellnitz (6-0, 260) has starred at defensive tackle and defensive end for the Canes in back-to-back title seasons. Root (6-1, 260), also a three-year starter, has tremendous versatility on the offensive line for Cartersville. The multi-sport athlete is a top wrestler and leading competitor in the discus throw and shot put in Class AAAA. Cruz has proven his value consistently in his career with the Hurricanes. The 2017 Cartersville Country Club Junior Championship was completed this past weekend (July 29-30) with Buck Brumlow firing a 1-over-par 145 to capture the title. Brumlow led by a single shot over Dalton Henson after Saturday's round, before shooting a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday to win by eight shots. Carson Harris shot a pair of 75s to win the 12-13 division over Camden Meadows and Jake Lawson. Other division winners included: Reid Henson, Bodie Brumlow, Andrew Lutjens, and Connor Bohn. Cartersville High School senior quarterback Trevor Lawrence is on the cover of another magazine. Find it on news stands or see fnfmagazine.com for more information. Lawrence, who has committed to Clemson, is the nation's top pro-style quarterback recruit and widely recognized as the number one recruit in the nation for all positions. Cartersville opens the 2017 season August 18 at Allatoona in Cobb County. The Canes have their official GHSA scrimmage on August 11 at Westminster in Atlanta.

Peachtree City National Little League took an early lead and held off a late challenge by Cartersville Little League Tuesday night in Peachtree City for a 17-7 win in a winner-take-all game for the Georgia Little League State Championship. Peachtree City took a 9-3 lead through three and one-half innings before Cartersville struck for a four-run fourth inning to narrow the margin to 9-7. Peachtree City then added eight more runs in the top of the fifth to put the game away. Cartersville pitchers were roughed up for 16 hits including six home runs and 13 earned runs. Tyler Shelton (2.1 IP, 9R, 8ER, 7H, 2BB, 3K) started on the mound for Cartersville and was tagged with the loss. Jakiyon Porter (2 IP, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K) and Isaac Seigler (0.2 IP, 3R, 0ER, 0BB, 1K) also pitched. Cartersville got a pair of first inning homers from Drake Carver and Chris Roper that tied the game early 3-3. Porter had two hits including a double. Martavius Cochran drove in a pair of runs with one hit. Cartersville won three games at the state tournament to reach the championship round. Cartersville defeated Dudley Little League, Athens Little League, and Peachtree City National. Their two losses in the double-elimination tournament were both to Peachtree City. Peachtree City National advances to the Little League Baseball Southeast Regional to represent Georgia August 4-9 in Warner Robins. Peachtree City National Little League scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning Monday night to break open a 4-4 game on their way to a 6-4 victory over Cartersville Little League (12U) that forces a deciding state championship game Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Peachtree City. The loss for Cartersville was their first of the double-elimination tournament. They were 3-0 heading into the state championship round. Peachtree City (4-1) also has only one loss. It came to Cartersville last Saturday by an identical 6-4 score. Peachtree City took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first Monday night on a two-run homerun. Cartersville tied the game in the next half inning with a Jakiyon Porter single, a hit batsman, and a dropped third strike that allowed Kase Adams to reach safely. There were two passed balls and a wild pitch that contributed to the Cartersville runs. Peachtree City regained the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning on a pair of singles, a Cartersville infield error, and a fielder’s choice. Again Cartersville knotted the score in the top of the third inning. Drake Carver popped solo home run to center field and Tyler Shelton followed with a walk. Shelton then moved up to second on a ground out by Chris Roper. He took third on a wild pitch and later scored Cartersville’s fourth run on another wild pitch. The decisive runs for Peachtree City came in the bottom of the fourth. A Cartersville infield error was followed by a double and a single that drove in two runs and gave Peachtree City a 6-4 lead. Cartersville got one more runner in scoring position in the fifth inning, but could do no further damage. Shelton (0.1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) started on the mound for Cartersville and was relieved with one out in the first inning. Harrison Childers (4.2 IP, 4R, 1ER, 6H, 0BB, 6K) finished the game for Cartersville and was tagged with the pitching loss. Carver had two hits including his homer to lead the Cartersville offense. Porter had the only other Cartersville base hit. Shelton and Trip Bradley each scored a run. Collin Fletcher stole a base. The win by Peachtree City forces a winner-take-all finale’ to the 2017 Georgia Little League (12U) State Tournament. The two teams will square off again Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in Peachtree City. Kyle Thompson was runner-up and Matt Atkins finished tied for eighth this past weekend at the WEB.com Tour's Digital Ally Open in Overland Park, Kansas while Matt Every finished tied for 14th at the PGA Tour's RBC Canadian Open. The Cartersville Little League (12U) all-star team will face Peachtree City National Little League for the Georgia Little League Baseball state championship Monday night. The tournament is being hosted by Peachtree City Little League. The finals will be a rematch of the last two unbeaten teams in the state tournament. Their first meeting started last Friday night and was completed on Saturday afternoon after the game was suspended in the fourth inning Friday. Cartersville prevailed in that first meeting 6-4, but Peachtree City National rebounded Sunday afternoon to edge Dudley Little League 7-6 in an elimination game to make the finals. Cartersville (3-0) will need only one win to advance to the Southeast Regional of Little League Baseball. The regional will be held in Warner Robins, GA August 4-9. Peachtree City National (3-1) must defeat Cartersville twice to take the title. Cartersville has state tournament wins over Dudley, Athens, and Peachtree City National. Peachtree City National has wins over Toccoa, Northern (Columbus), and Dudley. Former Cartersville High School and Georgia Southern University standout Sam Howard completed another solid start Saturday night for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes of the MiLB Pacific Coast League. He picked up a win over the Iowa Cubs by tossing 5 and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball. Howard scattered three hits and four walks while fanning three. The Isotopes led 5-0 at the time Howard left the game and went on to win 8-1 in front of 11,913 fans at Isotopes Park. With the Saturday night win, Albuquerque (55-52) moved into a tie for first place with the Salt Lake Bees (Los Angeles Angels affiliate) in the PCL Pacific Southern Division. The 24 year-old southpaw improved to 4-2 this season with a 4.50 ERA in nine starts for the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. He was 1-4 with a 2.33 ERA in nine starts earlier in the season with the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats. Overall, Howard has started 18 games in 2017 and thrown just over 92 innings. Opponents have a .234 batting average against him and he carries a combined 3.41 ERA and a 5-6 mark. Howard was a third round selection by the Rockies in the 2014 draft and is considered one of Colorado’s top pitching prospects. Also Saturday night, Connor Justus singled, walked, and drove in a run with a second inning sacrifice fly to help lead the Advanced Class A Inland Empire 66ers past the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 6-4. The former Cartersville High School and Georgia Tech 22-year-old shortstop has hit .250 over his last ten games (8-for-32) with nine runs scored, three RBIs, eight walks, and a pair of stolen bases. His season batting average is now up to .210 through 88 games in his second professional season with an on-base percentage of .335. He has five homers, 25 RBIs, 25 extra base hits, 50 walks, and 10 stolen bases on the year. Defensively, the Los Angeles Angels’ 2016 fifth round pick carries a .957 fielding percentage in 336 total chances and has been part of 45 double plays. Inland Empire (20-16, second half) currently trails Rancho Cucamonga by three games in the California League’s South Division second half. The 66ers are 50-56 for the full season.

The Cartersville Little League (12U) all-stars reached the championship round of the Georgia Little League State Tournament Saturday with a 6-4 victory over host team, Peachtree City National Little League. The young Canes are now the only remaining undefeated team in the double-elimination state tournament with a 3-0 record. Saturday’s win came in the completion of a suspended game that started Friday night. Cartersville led 2-1 when the game was halted Friday night. It was completed with a 3pm start on Saturday. Cartersville took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning Friday evening. Collin Fletcher singled and came around to score on a Drake Carver RBI double. Carver moved up to third base on a passed ball and then scored on an RBI ground out by Chris Roper. Peachtree City National answered with a single run in the bottom of the first inning. The host team utilized a single, a walk, a wild pitch, and a double-steal attempt to pick up their run. With runners at first and third, Cartersville catcher Carver gunned down a Peachtree City runner attempting to steal second, but the runner at third came across to score. The two teams then battled through four scoreless innings and an overnight suspension of play before Cartersville extended its lead in the top of the sixth. Jakiyon Porter opened the inning with a leadoff triple to center field and scored off an RBI single by Harrison Childers for a 3-1 lead. One out later, Paul Gamble doubled into right field and Childers stopped at third. Kace Adams then followed with a three-run blast over the center field wall and Cartersville held a 6-1 advantage. Peachtree City did not go away easily however. A single, a walk, and a three run homer narrowed the Cartersville lead to 6-4 before pitcher Trip Bradley closed out the sixth with a pair of strikeouts and a pop up. Tyler Shelton (3 IP, 1R, 0 ER, 1H, 1BB, 5K) started on the mound for Cartersville and earned the pitching victory. Bradley (3 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 5K) worked the final three frames and recorded a save. Childers was 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI to help lead the Cartersville offense. Adams was 1-for-2 with his three-run home run. Carver (double, RBI), Fletcher, Porter (triple), and Gamble (double) had the other Cartersville hits. Cartersville (3-0) awaits the winner of a Sunday elimination game between Peachtree City National and Dudley Little League. Cartersville (2-0) is leading host Peachtree City National (2-0) by a 2-1 score in a game that was suspended Friday night. The Cartersville/Peachtree City winner will advance to the state championship round Monday. The loser must play an elimination game against Dudley Little League for a chance to reach Monday’s finals. Cartersville scored twice in the first inning Friday night to take a 2-1 lead, but the game was haulted in the fourth inning. Cartersville and Peachtree City National are the only remaining unbeaten teams in the double-elimination tournament. Cartersville has state tournament wins over Dudley and Athens. Peachtree City National defeated Toccoa and Northern (Columbus).
