The Georgia Highlands College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Thursday at Cleveland State (TN). The Chargers won 4-3 in eight innings and 11-0 in five innings. Rebecca Meade (18-7) got the win in game one throwing 5.1 innings. Micayla McCoy (16-5) entered to pick up her third save in the opener and tossed a complete game shutout in the second game. The pair combined for seven strikeouts in the twin-bill. The offense was led by Shayla Smith (photo), who hit for the cycle on the day. Smith was 6-for-7 with a walk, sacrifice hit, double, triple and a home run. She drove in three of the Chargers’ four runs in the extra inning victory. Madison Gianfala recorded five hits on the day and swiped a pair of bases. Lauren Womack was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game. GHC is now 38-12 on the year and travels to Carrollton Friday to take on West Georgia Tech in the final conference doubleheader of the season. The Chargers currently sit third in the conference standings behind ABAC (30-20, 20-8) and Georgia Military (42-14, 19-9).

The Cartersville girls team placed third and the boys team finished fifth at the Region 5-AAAA Track and Field Championships that concluded Thursday in Tyrone at Sandy Creek High School. Chapel Hill won the girls title with 205 points. LaGrange was second with 116 points and the Lady Canes tied with Sandy Creek at 78 points. Cedartown, Troup County, and Central-Carrollton finished fifth through seventh. Sandy Creek won the boys title with 170 points. The Patriots were followed by Chapel Hill (165), Cedartown (86), Central-Carrollton (65), Cartersville (62), LaGrange (54), and Troup County (21). Cartersville’s London Shaw (left) won the girls shot put with a mark of 36-06.25. Trey Creamer (center) won the boys long jump with a mark of 21-07.00 and Nick Root (right) won the boys discus throw with a toss of 138-10.50. The Woodland Lady Cats tennis team lost its opening round state playoff match Thursday at Chamblee High School 5-0, but the youthful Woodland girls battled in each match. Chamblee, champions of Region 5-AAAAA, advance to the Round of 16 and will host Bainbridge who defeated McIntosh, 3-1 in the first round. The Adairsville girls soccer team lost at Calhoun Thursday evening, 3-0. Calhoun led 2-0 at the intermission on a pair of goals in the first twelve minutes of the first half. The Jackets added a final goal early in the second half and then went into defensive mode to hold off the Lady Tigers. Havyn Isaac had eight saves in goal for Adairsville. The Lady Tigers (11-4, 5-3) host Ringgold Friday at 5:30pm and will open the Class AAA state playoffs Tuesday at Jackson County (14-2).

Cartersville’s offense waisted little time getting on track Thursday night in their regular season finale’ at Richard Bell Field. The Canes scored five runs in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 7-1 lead on their way to a 10-4 victory over Central-Carrollton. The visiting Lions took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Cartersville roared back in the bottom of the frame. A hit batsman, sacrifice bunt, and three straight walks tied the game 1-1. Anthony Seigler then lined an RBI-single into right field to give the Canes their first lead of the evening, 2-1. Noah Daniel grounded out, but forced in a run to make the score 3-1 and Devin Warner singled home two more runs for a 5-1 Canes’ advantage. Hunter James (photo left) drove home two more runs for Cartersville in the third inning and the Hurricanes led 7-1. Central scored a run in top of the fifth inning and Cartersville answered with three more of their own. Preston Welchel doubled in a run with two outs and scored on a J.P. Martin double. Seigler then made the score 10-2 with a liner into right field. The Lions scored two runs in the top of the seventh on a walk, an outfield error, and an RBI single, but Jake Gooch ended the threat and the game by fanning back-to-back Central batters. Mason Barnett (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 5K) started on the mound for Cartersville and picked up the win. J.P. Martin (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) pitched the third through fifth innings and Jake Gooch (2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 4K) worked the sixth and seventh. James (2 RBIs), Welchel (RBI), Martin (double, RBI), Daniel (RBI), and Jacob Fowler added one hit each. Central falls to 9-18 overall and finished 3-9 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (22-8, 8-4) will hit the road to open the Class AAAA state playoffs beginning Friday, April 28. The Canes enter the playoffs 4th-seeded from Region 5-AAAA, but 5th-ranked in Class AAAA. Cartersville will play at No. 1 Blessed Trinity (25-3, 10-0 Region 7-AAAA) in the first round. The best-of-three series will open with a doubleheader and if a third game is needed, it would be played at Blessed Trinity on Saturday, April 29.

The Cartersville High School track and field team had six athletes earn spots in the Class AAAA State Sectionals Wednesday at Day 1 of the Region 5-AAAA Championship Meet. London Shaw of the Lady Canes won the girls shot put with a throw of 36’-6.25” to lead Cartersville’s advancing athletes. Kayla Carpenter and Vanna Beach advanced in the 1600M run. Carpenter finished third and Beach was fourth. Asariah Hill finished third in the girls triple jump with a mark of 32’-9.5”. Keonte Jackson took third place in the boys high jump with a mark of 6’-1” Nick Root qualified for state sectionals in the shot put with mark of 42’-5.25” The majority of the region running finals are set to take place Thursday. The state sectionals are schedule for April 29 at Blessed Trinity High School in Roswell.

Grayson Bagwell (photo left) tossed a five-hit shutout Wednesday evening as the Woodland Wildcats blanked Hiram 8-0 and stayed alive for the fourth and final state playoff berth in Region 7-AAAAA. Meanwhile, Villa Rica came-from-behind to defeat Paulding County 6-5 to take the race for the final playoff spot to the final day of the regular season on Friday. One more Villa Rica win or a Woodland loss puts Villa Rica in the playoffs. Woodland must defeat Hiram again and needs a Villa Rica loss to Paulding. Woodland took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, added two more runs in the third inning, and scored five runs over the final two frames for the 8-0 victory Wednesday. That was more than enough offense for Bagwell, who scattered five hits and one walk over seven innings. He fanned eight. Hunter Reaid led the Woodland offensive attack with three hits, including a home run and two RBIs. Emmanuel Jones (photo right) doubled and had two RBIs. The Georgia Highlands College baseball team jumped out to an early lead Tuesday night at Abraham Baldwin College and held on for a 10-7 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association win. The Chargers went up 7-1 in the top of the third inning and led 7-3 through eight innings, only to add three more runs in the ninth for a 10-3 lead. ABAC rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the potential tying run at the plate with two outs, but Britt Buckelew was called in from the bullpen and induced a ground out to end the threat. Devin Bilardello was 3-for-5 for the Chargers. Matt Vaccaro, Bronco O’Brien, and Brandon Bell had two hits and one RBI each. Caleb McElwaney (2 RBIs), Nick Piccapietra (2 RBIs), John White (RBI), Grant Bodison (RBI), and Nick Fink (RBI) had hits. Jake Lovvorn started on the mound for GHC and allowed a run on three hits and three walks. Tyler Sellers yielded a pair of runs on a walk and four hits in an inning and one-third. Sam Sowerbrower picked up the pitching win with four and two-thirds innings on the mound. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks. David Hussey retired two outs in the ninth before Buckelew entered to get the final out and a save. The loss dropped ABAC to 22-25 overall and 5-12 in the GCAA. Georgia Highlands (31-14, 8-5) will host ABAC for the remainder of their four-game conference series this week. The two teams play Friday night at 6pm at LakePoint in Emerson and will square off in a doubleheader Saturday at 1pm at LakePoint.

The Adairsville Tigers scored a pair of runs late and held off Bremen Tuesday night at home for a 4-3 Region 6-AAA win and the 200th win as a head coach for Adairsville’s Billy Roper. Caden Gibbs tossed five strong innings and Garrett Mishoe and Sam Seaman closed out the final two frames for the Tigers. Gibbs allowed only one run on six hits and a walk to pick up the pitching victory. He fanned four. Mishoe gave up a pair of runs in the sixth and opening the seventh on one hit and a walk. Seaman entered in the seventh and allowed only one hit to earn a save. The Blue Devils scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but Adairsville answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 2-1. Both pitchers then settled in for three scoreless innings before the Tigers posted single runs in the fifth and sixth to lead 4-1. Bremen threatened with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run, but Seaman was able to close out the game. Hunter Hice drove in Adairsville’s two first inning runs with a two-out double. Noah Dutton and Taylor Whitley had singled in front of Hice and scored on the play. Seaman had an RBI double in the fifth and Halen Huskins had an RBI single in the sixth to account for the Tigers’ final two runs that would ultimately be the difference in the game. Sam Thompson was part of all three Bremen runs. The junior catcher had three hits including a two-run homer in the seventh and a double. He scored the Blue Devils’ first inning run on a sac fly by Hayden Jones. Whitley and Hice (double, 2 RBIs) had two hits for the Tigers. Kyler Pelfrey, Dutton, Seaman (double, RBI), and Huskins (RBI) had one hit each. Bremen falls to 10-15 on the year and 6-11 in Region 6-AAA play. Adairsville (10-17, 5-11) hosts Calhoun Thursday at 5:55pm and travels to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday for a 5:55pm start.

Cartersville’s Anthony Seigler homered and tossed a three-hitter Tuesday night at Troup County, but the 2nd-ranked Tigers edged the 5th-ranked Hurricanes 2-1 with a late run and clinched the 2017 Region 5-AAAA championship. Troup has region losses to Central-Carrollton and Cedartown, but swept two games with both LaGrange and Cartersville. Troup scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jared Helton led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Ryan Bliss’ second sacrifice fly of the game. Cartersville threatened in the seventh and had runners at second and third, but failed to push either across. Troup led 1-0 after one inning on a double, sac bunt, and a sacrifice fly by Bliss. Seigler tied it for the Canes with a solo home run in the top of the sixth. Cartersville finished with six hits. In addition to Seigler’s dinger, Noah Daniel, Jake Gooch, Spencer Dickey, Preston Welchel, and Ian Inaba had hits. Helton (6 IP, 1ER, 4H 0BB, 2K) was the winning pitcher for Troup. Colby Williams (1IP, 0R, 2H, 1K) earned a one-inning save in the seventh. Troup County improved to 18-10 overall and 9-2 in Region 5-AAAA. The Tigers finish the region schedule Thursday at Sandy Creek. Cartersville (21-8, 7-4) closes out the regular season region slate Thursday at Richard Bell Field vs. Central-Carrollton and appears likely to open the state playoffs on the road as either a three- or four-seed behind Troup and LaGrange with Cedartown also in the mix. LaGrange (7-4 in 5-AAAA) has a region game remaining Thursday at Chapel Hill. Cedartown (8-4) has finished its region games.
