Region leading Carrollton scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth Friday night to come-from-behind for a 5-4 win over visiting Woodland. The Trojans trailed Woodland 3-0 through three innings and trailed 4-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth. The sixth frame rally occurred after two outs had been recorded. A walk, two doubles, and a single led to Carrollton’s three-run rally. Garrett Cornett (photo) and Hunter Reaid had two hits each for Woodland. Cauy Williams had one hit. Jacob Frye had one RBI. Grayson Bagwell (0.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB) was tagged with the pitching loss in relief of starter Kenny Jinks (5.2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K). The 5th-ranked Cartersville baseball team scored single runs in the first two innings Friday night and starting pitcher Anthony Seigler tossed a complete-game, four-hitter as the Hurricanes edged visiting 2nd-ranked LaGrange at Richard Bell Field, 2-1. Seigler (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 1HBP, 4K) also accounted for both Canes’ runs through his courtesy runner, John Reed Evans. Seigler was 1-for-4 and was on base a second time with a fielder’s choice. Seigler (photo) kept the Grangers off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. A Cartersville error, a hit batsman, and a single by Willis Kemp accounted for the LaGrange run. Seven different Canes had one hit each. Devin Warner’s hit was a double. Seigler, Noah Daniel, Spencer Dickey, Jordan Wilkie, Preston Welchel, and Ian Inaba had hits. LaGrange falls to 17-11 overall and 7-3 in Region 5AAAA. Cartersville (21-7, 7-3) plays at Troup County (16-9, 7-2) Tuesday at 5:30pm and will host Central-Carrollton Thursday at 5:55pm. Georgia Highlands College softball split a doubleheader Friday evening with East Georgia at Stars Field. The Chargers won the first game 1-0, but fell in the nightcap, 3-2. Rebecca Meade tossed another complete-game shutout for her sixteenth win of the year as the Chargers won the opener, 1-0. She allowed no runs, scattered five hits and one walk, and fanned six. Meade is now one win shy of the single-season record she established last season. GHC scored the game’s only run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Shay Wooten. Madison Gianfala started the inning with a hit and Shayla Smith followed with a walk. Brianna Fickes grounded into a fielders’ choice to leave runners on the corners when Wooten delivered the RBI. The Chargers led the second game 2-0 going to the seventh inning, but were unable to close the deal. The visiting Bobcats started their rally with two hits and a walk to load the bases. Then the Chargers turned an unusual 3-2-6 doubleplay to put themselves in position to get out of the inning. One run scored on the play and baserunners remained on first and second, but now with two outs. A Charger defensive mistake allowed the tying run to score and the next East Georgia batter delivered a go-ahead RBI single. GHC was unable to score in the bottom of the inning and the Bobcats earned a doubleheader split. Andria Booth was 4-for-7 in the two games and reached once on an error. Gianfala was 4-for-5 with a sacrifice and a walk. Georgia Highlands is now 35-11 on the season and 16-8 in conference. The Chargers take on South Georgia Saturday at Stars Field at 1pm & 3pm. GHC will also be honoring the team’s sophomores between games.

The Adairsville Tigers held leads of 4-2 after two innings and 6-4 through five innings Thursday night, but visiting Sonoraville escaped with an 8-7 Region 6AAA win after posting four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Grant Clark was a complete-game winning pitcher for the Phoenix. He allowed 13 hits, a walk, and seven earned runs with seven strikeouts while his offense produced just enough to top the Tigers. Taylor Whitley (2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 3H, 3BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville in relief of starter Sam Seaman (5 IP, 3ER, 8H, 3BB, 4K). Matthew Vincent, Gavin Phillips, Gage Soulios, and Clark had two hits each to lead Sonoraville’s ten-hit attack. The Phoenix also stole six bases in the contest. Kyler Pelfrey (RBI) and Noah Dutton (3 RBIs) led the Tigers at the plate with three hits each. Whitley finished with two hits and two RBIs. Dylan Hightower, Corey Nation, B.J. The Cartersville boys team finished first and the Lady Canes were second in a four-team track and field meet Thursday at Gordon Central High School. The Calhoun Middle School baseball team completed a 14-0 perfect season Thursday afternoon by winning the championship game of the Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association playoffs 6-4 over runner-up Cass Middle School. The Yellow Jackets finished the regular season 12-0 and had a semifinal playoff tournament win over Adairsville 10-5 to reach the finals. The Colonels won twice in the tournament to reach the championship game. Cass Middle defeated Ashworth 15-11 in the first round and Red Bud 6-1 in the playoff semifinals. Emily Collum scored four goals to lead the Adairsville Lady Tigers to a 6-5 non-region win over Model Thursday evening. Adairsville led 6-1 at one point but was forced to hold off a furious rally by the visiting Lady Blue Devils in the second half. Model is now 12-3 on the season. The Lady Tigers improved to 11-3 overall and have region games remaining in the regular season at Ringgold Friday and at Calhoun next Thursday. MODEL BOYS 3, ADAIRSVILLE 1 Eduardo Cisneros scored the lone Adairsville goal in the 28th minute of the first half to send the game to the intermission tied 1-1. Model had opened the game’s scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 9th minute. The Blue Devils scored twice in the second half and shut down the Tigers’ attack to improve to 11-5 on the year. Adairsville (1-9) plays at Ringgold Friday, hosts North Murray Monday, and closes out the year at Calhoun next Thursday.

Steven Spell tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout Thursday night at Paulding County to keep the Cass Colonels’ state playoff hopes alive. The Colonels will need to win in their season finale' Monday against these same Patriots plus get some help. Both Woodland and Villa Rica are 1.5 games ahead of Cass in the race for the fourth playoff seed from Region 7AAAAA and both have four region games remaining. Thursday night, the Colonels scored four runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth. That was plenty of offense on this night for Spell. The junior righty went the full seven innings, scattered four hits, four walks, and fanned six Patriots. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double. Bailey Campbell was 3-for-4 for the Colonels with two RBIs. Brett Gaddy had a hit, a walk and scored two runs. Logan Nelson added an RBI single, walked, and scored a run. Gavin Young also scored a run and drove in one. Paulding County falls to 8-17 overall and 2-11 in Region 7AAAAA. Cass (14-14, 7-8) has a non-region home game Saturday at 11am with River Ridge and will wrap up the regular season with Paulding County at home Monday at 5:55pm. The 5th-ranked Cartersville Hurricanes lost a Region 5AAAA contest at 7th-ranked Cedartown Thursday evening, 4-2. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead, but the Canes tied the game in the third inning on a two-RBI double by Jake Gooch (photo below). Noah Daniel was hit by a pitch and J.P. Martin reached on an error in front of Gooch. John Reed Evans scored as Martin’s courtesy runner. The game remained tied 2-2 until Cedartown scored the deciding runs in the fifth. Three walks and a two-run single by Dalton Price produced the Bulldogs’ runs. Meanwhile, the Canes’ offense could not solve Cedartown starting pitcher Jack Haney (6.2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H, 5BB, 4K). Miles Minge entered with two outs in the seventh to retire the final out. Mason Barnett (4.1 IP, 4ER, 4H, 6BB, 5K) started on the mound for the Canes and was charged with the loss. Levi Ayers (1.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 4K) entered in the fifth inning. In addition to Gooch’s two-RBI double, Anthony Seigler and Jordan Wilkie had hits for the Canes. Cedartown improved to 18-5 overall and 6-4 in Region 5AAAA. Cartersville (20-7, 6-3) hosts LaGrange Friday at Richard Bell Field at 5:55pm and will conclude the regular season next Tuesday and Thursday with region games at Troup County and at home against Central-Carrollton. The Cartersville High School girls tennis team won a region championship for the fifth straight season Wednesday with a 4-0 win over Central-Carrollton in the Region 5AAAA finals. The Cartersville boys team fell in the region finals to LaGrange, but will also host a state playoff match next week as a No. 2 seed. In the girls’ title match, Emma McCary won at Line 1 singles 6-4, 6-3, but each of the other matches were extended to a third set. Kenly King pulled out her Line 2 singles match as did the doubles teams of Taylor Riddle/Jordan Ross and Allyson Ireland/Lydia Wiedetz. The Cartersville boys team fell 2-3 in their championship match. LaGrange also won the regular season match with the Canes, 4-1. Evan Slocum and Will Allen won singles matches for the Hurricanes Wednesday to account for the Hurricanes two points. In next week’s state tournament, the Lady Canes will host the No. 4 seed out of Region 7AAAA. The Canes will entertain the No. 3 seed from that same region.

The Cass High School boys tennis team won twice Tuesday at the Region 7AAAAA Championship Tournament to reach the title match against host Carrollton Wednesday at Sunset Hills Country Club, but the Trojans were ready for the challenge in a 5-0 victory for the region crown. "We would have liked to have produced a little better showing in the region championship, but Carrollton is a really good team," noted Cass head coach Kevin Cunningham following his team's loss. "Carrollton is one of two or three teams with a legitimate shot to win the state championship," added Cunningham. "Our day didn't go as planned, but we will work hard at practice and hopefully be ready to go once the state tournament begins. We will put this stumbling block behind us." Cass singles: Avery Cornett lost at Line 1, 6-0, 6-0; Dalton Jackson fell at Line 2, 6-0, 6-2; and Seth Colston lost 6-1, 6-1 at Line 3. Cass doubles: Cade Foster and Reagan Barrere were defeated 6-1, 6-0. Max MaCauley and Kendal Arnold lost 6-0, 6-1. The Colonels will host their first round match in the Class AAAAA state tournament. Cass will play the No. 3 seed from Region 5AAAAA. "We don't know our first round opponent yet," added Cunningham. "Hopefully we will get that information by noon Thursday." WOODLAND GIRLS FALL TO ROME IN REGION 7AAAAA THIRD PLACE MATCH Woodland’s Deanna Dodson won her Line 2 singles match Wednesday over her Rome High opponent to give the Lady Cats their only point in a 3-1 loss in the Region 7AAAAA Third Place match. The 3-1 final, however, does not clearly explain how close Woodland came to knocking off the Lady Wolves. Rome won both doubles lines to hold a 2-0 edge, but the Line 1 and Line 3 singles matches were in jeopardy for the Lady Wolves. Woodland’s Line 1 singles player, Gloria Gore, was leading 7-6, 6-5 when the match ended and the Line 3 singles match was ultimately decided in a third set tie-breaker. Ashlyn Walker lost her first set 6-4, but sent the match to a third set with a second set, 6-2 win. Walker and her opponent battled to a 6-all score in the final set with Rome winning the tie-breaker 7-5. The Woodland girls will travel to the No. 1 seed from Region 5AAAAA to open the state playoffs.
