Four Georgia Highlands College pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout and three Chargers homered as GHC shutout the Shorter University JV team 10-0 to sweep a two-game series Wednesday at LakePoint. The Chargers beat Shorter JV Monday by an identical 10-0 score. Jake Lovvorn, Kyle Brady, Sam Sowerbrower, and Matthew Norton each pitched for Georgia Highlands Wednesday. Devin Bilardello, Brandon Bell, and John White each homered for the Chargers. Caleb McElwaney (triple, sac fly, RBI), Bilardello (2 RBIs), Matt Vaccaro (RBI), and Jake Ferentinos finished with two hits each for Georgia Highlands. White (3 RBIs), Bronco O’Brien (stolen base), Brandon Bell (3 RBIs), and Nick Fink had one hit each. The Chargers improved to 30-14 with their win and play a four-game conference series with Abraham Baldwin next week. GHC plays in Tifton at ABAC next Tuesday before hosting the final three games of the GCAA set Friday and Saturday (April 21-22) at LakePoint.

The visiting Kell Longhorns took a 5-3 decision at Woodland Wednesday night to earn a split in the two-game Region 7AAAAA series with the Wildcats. Woodland won Monday at Kell, 8-6. The Wildcats scored a run in the home half of the first inning to take an early, but the Longhorns scored put single runs on the scoreboard in the second and third innings and three more in the sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Woodland scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to narrow their deficit to two runs, but could get no closer. Chris Smith (6 IP, 3R, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 8K) got the win on the bump for Kell. Jake Lecroy earned a save with a spotless seventh inning. Starting pitcher Cauy Williams (5.1 IP, 5ER, 6H, 4BB, 7K) was saddled with the loss for the Wildcats. Bryce Evans (1.2 IP, 0R, 3H, 0BB, 1K, photo right) closed out the game on the mound for Woodland. Sam Blancato (double, two RBIs) and Noah Dawkins (RBI) had two hits each to lead the Longhorns’ offense. Jacob Frye had two hits including a solo home run for Woodland. Williams also had two hits. Hunter Reaid and Koby Stansel (double, RBI) had one hit each. Kell improves to 18-9 overall and 8-4 in Region 7AAAAA. Woodland (15-9, 6-6) plays a two-game, home-and-home, region series with 2nd-ranked Carrollton Friday and Monday. The Wildcats travel to Carrollton Friday and host the Trojans Monday. Both games are 5:55pm starts. EAST PAULDING 11, CASS 4 The East Paulding Raiders struck for six runs in the first three innings Wednesday night to take a 6-2 lead over visiting Cass and then added five more runs in the latter innings on their way to an 11-4 Region 7AAAAA win over the Colonels. Cass scored first with a run in the top of the second inning, but the Raiders answered with five in the bottom of the frame. The Colonels cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the third, but East Paulding again answered with a single run in the third, two in the fifth, and three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-2 lead. The Colonels scored twice in the top of the seventh for the 11-4 final score. Daniel Batcher went four innings for the East Paulding pitching win. Jackson Phipps and Michael Cox pitched in relief. Zach Yancey (1.2 IP, 5ER, 4H, 2BB) suffered the pitching loss in a start on the mound for the Colonels. Austin Pruett (3.2 IP, 6R, 4ER, 5H, 4BB, 4K) entered in the second and worked into the sixth inning before giving way to Gavin Young (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) for the final two outs. Sean Cheely, Will Prater, Ty Delancey, and Jacob Cook combined for seven hits and six RBIs to lead the Raiders’ attack. Clay Means (photo, right), Tyler Hendon (RBI) and Jake Collum (double, RBI) had two hits each for Cass. Steven Spell (RBI), and Nathan Smith each added a hit. Cody Johnson had one RBI. With their win, the Raiders swept the two-game series with Cass and improved to 13-11 overall and 9-3 in Region 7AAAAA. Cass (13-14, 6-8) will look to even their Region 7AAAAA mark in their final home-and-home region series with Paulding County that begins Friday in Dallas. The Patriots play at Cass Monday. Both game times are 5:55pm. The Colonels also have a non-region game Saturday at home against River Ridge at 11am.

Both the girls and boys tennis teams at Cartersville High School clinched state playoff berths Tuesday with both teams advancing to region title matches. The Cartersville girls defeated Cedartown in their only match of the day to reach the championship match. The Lady Canes had a first round bye and will now face Central-Carrollton in the finals on Wednesday. The win for the Lady Canes also locks down a home state playoff match in the Class AAAA state tournament. The boys team defeated both Sandy Creek and Chapel Hill Tuesday to reach the region title match on Wednesday. The Hurricanes will face top-seeded LaGrange for a region championship. The two wins by the Canes Tuesday clinched a home state playoff match in the Class AAAA state tournament as well.

Haralson County scored eleven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday night for a 12-2 home win over the visiting Adairsville Tigers in six innings. The two teams were scoreless through three innings and both teams scored a single run in the fourth for a 1-1 tie. Adairsville posted another run in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 advantage, but the Rebels scored eleven times to end the game in the bottom of the inning by run-rule. The Tigers committed four errors in the contest and the mistakes resulted in seven unearned runs. In the fateful seventh, Haralson County produced eleven runs on a walk, six singles, two doubles, two Tigers’ errors, and a home run. Adairsville starting pitcher Kyler Pelfrey (5 IP, 6R, 5ER, 5H, 1BB, 3K) suffered the loss. Chase Powell (0.2 IP, 6R, 0ER, 5H, 0BB) entered in the middle of the sixth inning and retired two Rebels’ batters. Hayden Davis, Stephen Southern, Grayson Knight, and Landon Malone combined for seven hits and eight RBIs for the Rebels. Malone also picked up the pitching victory by going the full six innings. He punched out five. Taylor Whitley and Hunter Hice both had two hit games for Adairsville. Both also drove in a run. Kyler Pelfrey, Noah Dutton, Sam Seaman, and Justin Green also had hits for the Tigers. The Rebels improved to 13-11 overall and 7-6 in region play. Adairsville (9-16, 4-10 in Region 6AAA) entertains Sonoraville Thursday at 5:55pm.

The Cass High School boys soccer won at Coahulla Creek Tuesday night in a non-region game, 6-3. The Colonels’ Anthony Robledo scored the first of five first half goals for Cass off an assist from Jorge Cabanos with 35:09 remaining. Less than five minutes later, Jonathan Tong found the net off a feed from Robledo to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead. Felipe Albarran scored off a Robledo assist with 29:33 remaining in the opening half and Robledo completed the hat trick in the first half with two more goals in the final seven minutes. Robledo’s second goal came with 6:46 remaining in the half off an assist from Slomi Orozco. His third score was with 5:38 remaining in the first half on a feed from Jackson Laurent that gave Cass a 5-0 lead at the intermission. Coahulla Creek scored three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to narrow the Colonels’ lead to 5-3, but the game settled down for most of the remainder of the game and Cass’ Laurent added an insurance goal off an assist from Javier Duarte with 2:18 remaining to secure the victory. Brandon Romero had six saves in net for the Colonels. Cass (4-9) has a home, non-region game with North Springs Friday at 8pm.

The Cartersville baseball team made short work of visiting Chapel Hill Tuesday at Richard Bell scoring runs in each frame in a 17-4, five-inning, Region 5AAAA victory. Chapel Hill actually scored first, plating a single run in the top of the first off Canes’ starter Jake Gooch. The Hurricanes’ bats and their offense, however, produced runs with ease to quickly regain the lead 9-1 after two frames. The Panthers added two more runs in the third to narrow the margin to 9-3, but Cartersville put the game away with seven more runs in the fourth for the eventual rout. Gooch (3 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 5K) gave way to Spencer Dickey (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 1K) in the fourth inning and Mason Barnett (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 4K) in the fifth to close out the win. Noah Daniel (photo above) was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the Hurricanes. He had one double, scored four runs and drove in three. Spencer Dickey had two hits including a double and two RBIs. The Cass High School boys tennis team won twice Tuesday at the Region 7AAAAA Championship Tournament to reach the championship match Wednesday against Carrollton at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton. The Colonels defeated Rome in the opening round 3-0 and Villa Rica in the region semifinals 3-0 to make the championship match. In both matches Tuesday, some play was pulled from the courts after Cass had clinched the matches. “The singles came up big for us today,” said Cass head coach Kevin Cunningham. They won a hard fought match against Villa Rica. We have leaned on our singles lines all year and they continue to come up big for us. We are just happy to get the wins and are excited to test ourselves against Carrollton tomorrow in the region championship,” he concluded. Regardless of the outcome in Wednesday’s region title match, the Cass boys will host a first round state playoff match when the Class AAAAA state playoffs begin. The Cass girls were not as fortunate, although the Lady Colonels battled third-seeded Rome. “The girls fought hard and gave themselves a chance against Rome, but we came up just a little short in our upset bid,” said Cunningham. “Our girls got beat pretty handily at Rome this year and to come back and play them so close was a big deal. The Lady Colonels soccer team won at Coahulla Creek Tuesday night 4-2. Although it was a strong team effort throughout, sophomore Logan Vermaas had a big night scoring all four goals for Cass. Senior Stephanie Robledo, sophomore Briana Ochoa, and sophomore Lupita Pineda had one assist each in the winning cause. Brianna Bullock, junior goal keeper, had 19 saves in goal. Cass (6-8) plays North Springs at home Friday for senior night. Kickoff is set for 6pm.

The Woodland High School girls tennis team secured a spot in the Class AAAAA state playoffs Tuesday with an opening round Region 7AAAAA tournament win over Villa Rica, 3-2. The Lady Cats fell in the semifinals to top-seed Kell, 3-0, but will play Rome Wednesday to determine third and fourth place in the region. Deanna Dodson and Ashlyn Walker picked up singles wins for Woodland over Villa Rica at lines two and three. Caroline Gore and Michele Maserjian earned the third Lady Cats’ point with a victory at line one doubles.

The Adairsville baseball team won at Murray County Monday night in a Region 6AAA matchup. Caden Gibbs tossed a complete game for the Tigers scattering seven hits with seven strikeouts. He did not walk a batter. Adairsville took a 6-0 lead with a single run in the first inning, two runs in the fourth, and three more runs in the fifth frame. The Indians scored one run in the fifth and two more in the bottom of the seventh, but Gibbs was able to close out his complete game effort. The Tigers pounded out eleven hits. Sam Seaman led the offense with three hits and three RBIs that included a double and a home run. Taylor Whitley had two hits and one RBI. Hunter Hice (RBI), Noah Dutton, B.J. Woodland and Kell went back-and-forth on the scoreboard Monday night in Cobb County with the Wildcats pulling out a crucial 8-6 Region 7AAAAA victory in eight innings. Three Woodland pitchers kept the Wildcats in the contest. Grayson Bagwell (6 IP, 3R, 2ER, 6H, 5BB) started for Woodland. Tommy Peed (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1BB) picked up the pitching win by pitching the seventh inning and Garrett Pope (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 1K) earned a save in the eighth. Woodland’s eighth inning started after two outs. A pair of walks to Dylan Webb and Garrett Cornett led to Webb scoring on a wild pitch. Jacob Frye was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. The Colonels out hit East Paulding ten to six and played error free defense. They also rallied to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth down by a run, but came up just short. Jake Collum (photo) pitched the first seven innings for Cass, but after 107 pitches had to be relieved for the eighth inning. Collum allowed two runs on five hits and one walk. He fanned ten. Zach Yancey was tagged with the pitching loss for the Colonels, yielding an eighth inning homer. He struck out one Raider. Senior Alex Prosser was the offensive hero for East Paulding. He was 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, a double, and all three Raiders’ RBIs. Cass led 1-0 after one inning on a Steven Spell RBI single. That lead held until Prosser’s two-run homer in the top of the fourth. The Colonels tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Collum doubled and later scored on a wild pitch to send the game to an extra frame. Prosser hit his second homer of the game in the top of the eighth to put the Raiders up 3-2. Cass then loaded the bases. Tyler Hendon doubled to open the inning. Clay Means drew a two out base on balls and Bailey Campbell was hit by a pitch, but that was all the damage the Colonels would do. Collum finished with three hits (2 doubles) and Nathan Smith two hits for Cass. Means, Spell (RBI), Yancey, Cody Johnson, and Hendon (double) had one hit each for the Colonels. East Paulding improved to 12-11 overall and 8-3 in Region 7AAAAA. Cass (13-13, 6-7) plays a region rematch at East Paulding Wednesday at 5:55pm.
