Georgia Highlands College pitchers Jake Lovvorn and Sam Sowerbrower combined to blank visiting East Georgia State Tuesday at LakePoint while the Chargers’ offense exploded for 17 runs on 12 hits that included a pair of home runs from Brandon Bell and Grant Bodison. With the 17-0 win, GHC (21-9 overall) opens conference play 1-0. The two teams will complete their four game series Friday and Saturday with a single game Friday and a doubleheader Saturday. All three games remaining in the series will be at East Georgia State in Swainsboro. Matt Vaccaro had three hits and three RBIs. Bodison drove in five runs with a pair of hits, including his home run. Caleb McElwaney and Devin Bilardello had two hits and two RBIs each. John White, Bell (HR, 3 RBI), and Israel Zackery had one hit each. Lovvorn (5 IP, 0R, 5H, 2BB, 2K) was the winning pitcher. Sowerbrower (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) took the mound in the sixth inning.

The Georgia Highlands College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Thomas University JV in Thomasville winning 9-3 and 13-0. Brianna Fickes, Mackenzy McFarland, and Shayla Smith (photo) hit home runs in the first game win. McFarland also added a three RBI double in the second game that was only a few feet short of a grand slam. Andria Booth had five hits in the doubleheader and reached base seven times in nine plate appearances. Booth, Lauren Womack, Carlee Thurmond, and Evan Hall each had a stolen base in the two games. Rebecca Meade earned the pitching victory in the first game. She went seven innings, and allowed only three unearned runs on five hits and two walks. Meade fanned five. Micayla McCoy was the second game pitching winner. She tossed a five-inning, complete game shutout and yielded only two hits and two walks. She had one strikeout. The Chargers (27-8) return to GCAA conference play Saturday at Gordon State with a doubleheader scheduled for 3pm.

The Adairsville and Cartersville girls soccer teams both earned victories Tuesday night in their respective regions, while Woodland was shutout by Villa Rica. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 8, NORTH MURRAY 0 Emily Collum scored four goals and Chloe Cochran scored twice as the Lady Tigers blanked North Murray. Katie Lawhorn and Gillian Johnson each added a goal for Adairsville. Lauren Stephenson, Emily Emmons, Lawhorn, and Collum each had assists. Havyn Isaac and Lex Jackson split time in net to record the shutout. Adairsville (7-2, 4-2) hosts Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe at 5:30pm next Thursday. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2, SANDY CREEK 1 The Lady Canes came-from-behind with a pair of second half goals to defeat Sandy Creek Tuesday, 2-1. After a scoreless first half, the Lady Patriots took a 1-0 lead early in the second half. Kaylyn Donegan tied the game in the 55th minute off a feed from Rebecca Hays. The game remained tied until the 72nd minute when Sandy Creek was called for a handball in the box. Hays converted the penalty kick and the Lady Canes held on for the win. Cartersville (6-4, 2-2 Region 5AAAA) hosts region-rival Cedartown Friday at 5:30pm. VILLA RICA GIRLS 5, WOODLAND 0 Villa Rica scored four, first-half goals and then cruised to a 5-0 win over Woodland. The Lady Cats, who have been decimated by key injuries this season, fall to 0-9 on the year.

Devin Warner delivered a walk-off double Tuesday night in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes defeated Cedartown 4-3 at Richard Bell Field in a battle of two Top Five teams in Class AAAA. Spencer Dickey singled to open the final inning, but was forced out at second on a bunt attempt by Mason Barnett. Preston Welchel followed with a successful sacrifice that advanced pinch runner Kolby Adams into scoring position. After Anthony Seigler walked, Warner delivered the game-winning, two out hit. Cedartown scored three runs after two outs in top of the fifth to knot the game. The Canes had taken a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third. Barnett (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) picked up the pitching victory in relief of starter Seigler (4.2 IP, 3ER, 6H, 4BB, 8K) and Spencer Dickey (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB). Cedartown’s Casey Newsome (6.2 IP, 4ER, 5H, 4BB, 3K) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs. Cartersville got on the scoreboard first with a pair of walks to Welchel and Seigler followed by a wild pitch. Warner then flied out to centerfield for a sac fly. One batter later, J.P. Martin homered to left field and the Canes held a 3-0 advantage. Cedartown tied the game in the fifth on a pair of walks and three singles. Newsome’s single drove in two runs. Barnett was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Hurricanes. Dickey, Noah Daniel, and Martin’s homer were the only other Cartersville hits. Warner finished with two RBIs. The week for local collegiate athletes included strong performances from Tyler Washington, Sean McDermott, Michael Goss, Carrington Evans, and Brandon Etheridge on the baseball diamond. In softball, local players at Reinhardt University and Georgia Highlands posted solid performances. Taylor Braselton and Taylor Weeks with the Lady Eagles and Lauren Womack with the Chargers. Peyton Gollhofer earned a pair of wins on the tennis courts for Ball State University and Blake Perry added a nice track and field performance for Jacksonville State University. Meanwhile, Cumberland University wrestler Evan Cole was named NAIA Scholar Athlete. BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Freshman, LHP, Cartersville HS). . . threw two innings in a 10-1 win over Jacksonville State last Wednesday and allowed three hits, but no runs, striking out one working the seventh and eighth innings. He threw 18 of his 25 pitches for strikes. Anderson, with only one poor outing, has a 13.50 ERA, but has multiple solid performances in six appearances out of the bullpen. He has thrown 4.2 innings and has four strikeouts. The Tigers (17-5, 3-0 SEC) play at Georgia Tech Tuesday and return to Southeastern Conference play this weekend with a series at Georgia. She was also ninth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.14 meters. The Cass Colonels won a back-and-forth battle at Region 7AAAAA and county-rival Woodland Monday night in extra innings to remain unbeaten in region play and earn a season sweep over the Wildcats. The two teams traded the lead and saw the game tied three different times before the Colonels scored twice in the top of the eighth for an eventual 6-4 win. With the game tied 4-4 after seven innings, Cass coaxed four walks to take a 5-4 lead with only one out in the eighth. Following a fly out to centerfield, another base on balls gave the Colonels their ultimate 6-4 lead. Cody Johnson, who pitched a pair of shutout innings for the Colonels, tossed a perfect bottom of the eighth to preserve the Cass victory. He induced a fly out to centerfield, recorded a strikeout, and enticed a pop up to first base to close out the game and garner the pitching victory. Cass took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Jake Collum. The Colonels then went ahead 2-0 in the third on a sac fly by Johnson that scored Bailey Campbell who had singled to start the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Woodland’s Cauy Williams followed a Jacob Frye single with a two-run home run to left field that tied the game 2-2. The Colonels went ahead 3-2 in the fifth. Steven Spell lined a single into left field, moved to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a ground out. Zach Yancey then hit a hard ground ball to third and a Woodland error allowed him to reach safely and Spell to score. The Wildcats tied the game again in the bottom of the inning. A single by Noah Ludy, a sacrifice, and a Jordan Lee ground ball single tied the game 3-3. Woodland took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning on a single by Williams, a stolen base by his courtesy runner Emmanuel Jones, and a Koby Stansel RBI single. The Colonels tied the game again to send it to extra innings in the top of the seventh. Tyler Hendon doubled on a line drive to center field and was replaced as a runner by Bryson Markley. When Yancey reached on a bunt single, Markley kept running and was able to score. Hunter Reaid and Williams (2 RBIs) had two hits apiece for Woodland. Lee (RBI), Stansel (RBI), Frye, Trenton Harrison, and Ludy each added one hit. Hendon (RBI) and Spell had a pair of hits each for Cass. Campbell, Collum (RBI), Yancey, and Nathan Smith had the other Colonels’ hits. Hinton and Johnson added RBIs. Harrison (4.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 4K) started on the mound for the Wildcats. Reaid (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB) worked on the mound through the sixth inning. Grayson Bagwell (1.1 IP, 3ER, 2H, 4BB, 1K) was saddled with the pitching loss, working the seventh inning and into the eighth and Garrett Pope (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) retired the final two outs in the top of the eighth. Collum (6 IP, 4ER, 8H, 1BB, 2K) started on the bump for the Colonels and went six innings before Johnson closed out the final two frames for the win. The Woodland girls track team won the 2017 Gordon Central Warrior Invitational Saturday with an 88.5 point total. The Dalton girls and Haralson County girls finished second and third. Locally, Cass placed 11th of 15 teams. On the boys side, Woodland was second. The Wildcats finished 11.5 points behind Riverdale. Dalton was third, Calhoun fourth, and Cass placed fifth in the 16-team event. Coahulla Creek took an 8-0 lead through four innings Saturday and limited Adairsville to only three hits on the day for an eventual 9-2 Region 6AAA win over the Tigers in Chatsworth. Grant Ogle pitched a complete game for the Colts. He allowed only one earned run on three hits and two walks while fanning six. Garrett Mishoe suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville. The starter only retired two in the first inning and allowed three earned runs on a pair of hits and four walks. Taylor Whitley, Kyler Pelfrey, and Chase Powell all pitched in relief for the Tigers. Coahulla Creek out hit Adairsville nine to three. Joseph Schwartz and Hayden Lock had two hits and two RBIs each for the Colts. Dylan Hightower, Caden Gibbs, and Michael Cook had the Adairsville base hits. Coahulla Creek improves to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in region games. Adairsville (3-9, 0-3) entertains Haralson County Tuesday at 5:55pm. The Tigers will then travel to Sonoraville Thursday and host Murray County on Friday.
