The Cass girls soccer team defeated the East Paulding Lady Raiders Tuesday night at Doug Cochran Stadium in Region 7AAAAA action. The Lady Colonels took a 2-0 lead to the intermission on goals by Brittney Ochoa and Kelsey Rivera. Rivera assisted on the Ochoa goal and Stephanie Robledo was credited with the assist on Rivera’s counter. Morgan Delarm scored the third Cass goal in the second half off a feed from Robledo. Brianna Bullock had the shutout in goal. The loss dropped East Paulding to 2-6 on the year and 0-2 in Region 7AAAAA. The Lady Colonels (4-5, 2-2) play at Hiram Friday in another region matchup. ADAIRSVILLE LADY TIGERS 4, MURRAY COUNTY 1 The Adairsville girls soccer team won 4-1 Tuesday night at Murray County behind a pair of goals and one assist by Gillian Johnson and one goal each from Emily Collum and Kate Lawhorn. Murray County fell to 0-5 on the season with the loss. The Lady Tigers (6-1, 3-1 6AAA) play at Sonoraville Friday with a 5:30pm kickoff. The Lady Phoenix are 9-1 on the year and unbeaten in Region 6AAA.

In the SWAC Championship Tournament, Mosby scored 17 points at home against Mississippi Valley State and then scored 15 against Southern University in the conference semifinals in Houston. He was limited to only three points in the conference championship game against Texas Southern also played in Houston. He totaled 15 rebounds, 9 assists, and 6 steals in the three conference tournament games. Alcorn State beat Mississippi Valley State 63-60; beat Southern 81-59; and lost 53-50 to Texas Southern in the finals. The Braves finished the year 18-14 overall and 13-5 in the SWAC. The 18 wins are the most for the Braves since the 2001-02 season. ADRIAN RODGERS — Malbas Oresund Malmo - Swedish Pro League (Cartersville native, Centennial HS, Southern University). . .scored 25 points with two rebounds and three assists as Malbas Oresund won for only the third time all season in defeating UMEA 93-84 last Tuesday. Rodgers leads the team in scoring with a 15.7 average. With only four games remaining in the regular season, Malbas Oresund plays at Sodertalje Monday night and hosts Norrkoping Friday. COREY TOBIN — Reinhardt University (Junior, G, Cartersville HS). . . scored three points with five rebounds, two assists, and a steal in an 84-74 opening round loss at the NAIA National Championship Tournament in Point Lookout, Missouri last Wednesday. Tobin averaged 7.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and one steal per game this season. The Eagles compiled a 22-9 mark this season. CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Senior, RHP, Cass HS). . . made a one inning relief appearance last Wednesday and was part of a four-pitcher shutout of Tuskegee University. Wilson struck out the side in the ninth inning and currently has a 3.00 ERA. The Cougars (12-8, 7-2 Peach Belt Conference) have won eight of ten, but had a five-game win streak snapped Saturday by Young Harris College. CSU plays a non-conference game Wednesday at Albany State University and will host the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA D-II, USC-Aiken, for a three-game series this Friday through Sunday.

The Georgia Highlands College softball team lost three of four games this past weekend on the road in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Chargers split a doubleheader at South Georgia Friday with a 7-1 loss and a 9-3 victory. GHC was then swept in a conference doubleheader at East Georgia, 2-1 and 4-3. The Chargers (23-8, 7-5 GCAA) travel to Roane State CC (Tenn.) Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader and will host West Georgia Tech in a non-league doubleheader Saturday with first pitch set for 5pm.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes finished 2-2 this past weekend in the nationally recognized Perfect Game High School Showdown and remain ranked No. 2 in Class AAAA in the latest release of Georgia Dugout Preview Magazine's weekly poll. The Canes had wins over James Clemens (AL) and IMG Academy (FL) in the Showdown. Their losses were to Winder-Barrow and eventual tournament champion, Providence (FL). Woodland is also among the teams listed. The Wildcats are among the considered teams for the Top Ten in Class AAAAA. Woodland was 1-2 last week with a win over Chattooga and losses to Calhoun and Cedartown. The Georgia Highlands College baseball team found themselves on the short-end of a pitching duel Sunday afternoon at LakePoint in Emerson, falling to visiting Triton CC (River Grove, Illinois) 3-1. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak by the Chargers. Triton pitcher Jonah Nosek tossed a complete game four-hitter and allowed only four walks and one, unearned run. Georgia Highlands took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when leadoff hitter Bronco O’Brien reached on an error by the Trojans’ shortstop and later scored on a Matt Vaccaro RBI single. Triton took the lead in the top of the second with two runs on only one hit. The Trojans took that 2-1 lead on a walk, a single, an infield error, a sacrifice fly, a hit batsman, and a bases loaded walk. A leadoff single in the seventh inning, followed by a walk, a balk, and a groundout plated the final Triton run for their 3-1 margin. Vaccaro was the only Charger with two hits, including a double and an RBI. John White and Josh Kiser had the other Georgia Highlands’ hits. GHC utilized four pitchers. Ryan Bramlett (4 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 2BB, 5K) started on the mound and was saddled with the loss. Sam Sowerbrower (2.2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 2BB, 3K), Tyler Sellers (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB), and Peyton Tennant (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) each toed the rubber for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (17-9) will host five games in the coming week starting Thursday. The Chargers play a doubleheader with Shorter University’s JV Thursday and will entertain a three-game series with Three Rivers CC (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) Friday night and Saturday. Saturday is a doubleheader at noon. The Friday night game is a 6pm.

The Woodland and Cartersville High School track and field teams competed Saturday at the Ronnie McClurg / Dalton Rotary Invitational hosted by Dalton High School. The Woodland girls placed fourth and Cartersville finished 13th. The Woodland boys were eighth and Cartersville 12th of 14 teams. Hillgrove won the girls meet by 79 points over Rome. Hillgrove also won the boys meet over Allatoona by 25 points. Dalton placed third in both genders. The Georgia Highlands College baseball team’s win streak reached eleven Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of USC-Lancaster at Lakepoint in Emerson. Drew Wilson tossed a near complete game seven-hitter in the first game as the Chargers won 3-1. Then the Chargers’ bats took over in game two with a 14-4 five inning, mercy-rule win in the second game. Georgia Highlands scored their three runs in the first two innings of the opener. Matt Vaccro had a two-run single in the first inning and John White drove in a run with a hit in the second. The Lancers got a pair of walks and a single in the seventh for their only run. Wilson (6.2 IP, 1ER, 7H, 4BB, 7K) kept USC-Lancaster under control to earn the pitching win. Britt Buckelew entered to retire the final out and earn a save. In the second game, the Chargers scored six runs in the first inning, then added on each frame with one in the second, four in the third, and three more runs in the fourth inning for a 14-4 final. Matthew Norton (4.2 IP, 4ER, 3H, 4BB, 5K) collected the pitching victory for Georgia Highlands. Devin Bilardello was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Five other Chargers: Nick Fink, Nick Piccapietra (RBI), Vaccro (3 RBI), White (2 RBI), and Bronco O’Brien (RBI) had hits. Georgia Highlands improved to 17-8 on the season and face Triton CC (River Grove, Illinois) Sunday at noon at LakePoint. The Chargers have five more games next week beginning Thursday with a doubleheader against Shorter JV at 4pm. They will then play a three-game series with Three Rivers CC (Norwich, Connecticut) Friday and Saturday at LakePoint.

The Cass and Adairsville track and field teams competed Saturday in Calhoun at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. The Cass boys placed second — finishing only four points behind winner Bremen and eight and one-half points ahead of host Calhoun. The Adairsville boys were seventh in the 12-team event. Bremen also won the girls championship with Sonoraville second and Calhoun third. The Cass girls finished sixth and Adairsville was tenth. Winder-Barrow scored five runs in the first two innings Saturday afternoon to take an early 5-1 lead, then held off Cartersville down the stretch for a 6-5 consolation round win at the Perfect Game High School Showdown at LakePoint in Emerson. Cartersville finished 2-2 in the nationally acclaimed event with wins over James Clemens (AL) and IMG Academy (FL). The other loss came to the eventual champs, Providence (FL) in the Round of 16 of the single-elimination championship bracket. Providence edged Blessed Trinity (GA) 4-3 in the championship game. Cartersville battled back from an early deficit in their loss to Winder-Barrow. After trailing 5-1 early, the Canes posted single runs in the third and fifth innings to narrow the deficit to 6-3. Jacob Fowler then hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 6-5, but the Cartersville rally would end a run short. Fowler finished with two hits and two RBI. Jake Gooch (RBI) and Anthony Seigler also had two hits. J.P. Martin (RBI), Devin Warner, and Spencer Dickey also contributed one hit each. Zack Smith, Beau Harris, and Pat DiMarco accounted for all seven of Winder-Barrow’s hits and five RBIs. Cartersville starting pitcher Harrison Osborn (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1BB) took the pitching decision loss. Curtis Wilkes (1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 2H, 1K), Fowler (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 4K), and Gooch (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 4K) also pitched. Winder-Barrow finished 3-1 in the Showdown tournament and improved to 11-1 overall. Cartersville (9-3) hosts Sandy Creek to open Region 5AAAA play Thursday at 5:55pm and will play at Chapel Hill Friday at 5:55pm.

In a back-and-forth battle with IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL), Cartersville got a big home run from shortstop Devin Warner and another strong pitching performance from their staff for a 4-3 consolation win Saturday morning at the Perfect Game High School Showdown at LakePoint in Emerson. Cartersville fell to the consolation portion of the tournament after a 6-4 loss to Providence (Jacksonville, FL) in the second round of the single-elimination championship bracket Friday afternoon. The Stallions went on to win again Friday night to reach Saturday’s semifinals. Providence eliminated Etowah in the championship bracket quarterfinals, 8-4. In Saturday morning’s game with IMG, the Canes trailed 1-0 but took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, 2-1. Warner walked. Noah Daniel singled to send Warner around to third base, and J.P. Martin reached on a ground ball error that plated Warner for the first run. Jake Gooch followed one out later with a liner into right field to score Daniel for a 2-1 lead. IMG scored two more runs in the fifth to regain a 3-2 advantage, but Cartersville responded with a two out rally courtesy of a 'boot and a bomb.' With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Anthony Seigler reached on an infield error and Warner sailed a line drive home run over the right field wall to give the Purple Hurricanes a 4-3 lead. Tyler Esplin had two hits and one RBI for the Ascenders. Kendall Williams (5 IP, 4R, 1ER, 4H, 1BB, K) was handed the pitching loss although only one run against him was an earned run. Levi Ayers picked up the pitching win for Cartersville with one inning of middle relief. He entered for the starting pitcher Martin (4 IP, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 7K) and was the pitcher of record when the Canes added their go-ahead runs in the fifth. Spencer Dickey (0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K) closed out the final two frames for a save. Cartersville (9-2) will continue consolation play in the tournament Saturday afternoon at LakePoint with a 1pm game against Winder-Barrow.
