The Woodland High School swim team won the 2017 Bartow County Swim Championships with a combined team score of 315 Tuesday at Adairsville High School. Adairsville was second with 270 points, followed by Cartersville at 264 and Cass at 132. The girls’ scores by school were Woodland 167, Adairsville 136, Cartersville 131, and Cass 59. Bartow Sports Zone is proud to bring you the next installment of the Q & A series: “Where Are They Now?” The current series of articles features former Bartow County football players. In this edition, the Q & A is with former Woodland football letterman -- Matt Stephens Name: Matt Stephens Age: 31 PART ONE: High School What years you were at Woodland, what was your position and who was the head coach? I was at Woodland from 1999 to 2003. On the offensive side, I played slot and wide-out. On defense, I played some free safety and corner. On special teams, I returned kicks, was a gunner on the punt team, occasionally returned punts and held for extra points… John Camp was our head coach all four years. Do you have a favorite coach from Woodland? If so, who and why? That’s easy for me, but I have two: Todd Wofford and Todd Simpson. I am naturally drawn to people who effortlessly lead with a lot of candor and passion. To reach your full potential, you must surround yourself with selfless people who do not choose convenience, feelings or comfort over progress, improvement or results. My relationships with these two weren’t always “fun” or “happy,” but were far and away the most genuine and valuable. Favorite teammate and why? My favorites were Jermile Richards and Kanne Ikwuezunma. I love those two guys. Both are very hard workers and hate to lose as much as I do. True competitors to the core and great athletes. Favorite moment? The talk Todd Wofford had with me after the Etowah game my Junior year. I started the season off strong and made a touchdown catch against Etowah as the clock ran out at half time. People were starting to notice me and I could tell that other teams were putting more focus on covering my part of the field. After the Etowah game, Coach Wofford called me in to a meeting room by myself and gave me one of the most valuable reality checks I’ve ever had. For about ten minutes, Coach explained that although I had made a “few big plays and people in the crowd are cheering” (in Wofford’s signature tone), my mediocre blocking and route running wasn’t good enough for him. The status quo simply does not exist with these guys. Best player you played against in high school? Best you played with? The best I played with in high school is hands down, Kwento Ikwuezunma. Kwento was a senior when I was a freshman and had a big influence on me. The best I played against was probably Mahlon Carey, South Cobb’s running back my junior year. He was great at waiting for the play to develop and hitting the open holes. He really went about half-speed until he saw something he wanted, which is a brilliant move in high school football PART TWO: College What years you were at Newberry, what was your position and who was the head coach? I was at Newberry from 2003-2004. I played slot receiver and returned kicks. Zak Willis was our head coach. Who else recruited you? Why did you choose Newberry? I was not really recruited by anyone. Coach Simpson found a last-minute opportunity for me to visit a one day combine at Newberry, which was the only time I ever attended anything like that, other than summer camp at Furman. Newberry ran the spread and threw the ball a lot, which was what I wanted. We also had the second best recruiting class in South Carolina that year: PHOTO right: Matt Stephens with parents David and Susan Stephens and Todd Simpson USC Newberry Clemson Furman What years you lettered: I was a redshirt while I was there, so I didn’t earn a varsity letter. Do you have a favorite coach from Newberry? If so, who and why? Coach Willis was my favorite. Super hard-nosed football coach and did not put up with anything or anyone that did not align with our team goals. Favorite teammate and why? My favorite teammate would have to be Donavin Fludd. Donavin was a super hard hitting cornerback, loved his teammates and hated to lose. Favorite moment? Tymere Zimmerman’s one-handed catch against Mars Hill. The ball was thrown way over Tymere’s head and out of bounds, but he somehow managed to grab it while on the run, up and behind his body. It was the best catch I’ve ever seen in a live football game. Best player you played against in college? Best you played with? Ricardo Colclough from Tusculum was the best we played against, but one of our wide-outs, Derrick Higgins scored four touchdowns on him. Derrick was a Shrine Bowl player the same year that Tymere was in high school and both could have played on Sunday. Best I played with would be Tymere Zimmerman (played in the Army All-American Game, Shrine Bowl player). It was difficult to stand out on our team, because we had so many great players. Just at receiver, we had four Shrine Bowl players. Tymere ran incredible routes and could catch anything. PART THREE: What is your life after football like? I graduated from Ole Miss with a degree in Risk Management back in 2008 and lived/worked in Atlanta until moving to Greenville, South Carolina, where I work in the healthcare tech/SaaS industry. I also donate a lot of my time as a board member of a few non-profit organizations. International Giving – Atlanta-based, charitable giving organization SCOTA (South Carolina Occupational Therapy Association) – Columbia-based, professional legislation/advocacy association How did football affect your life in a positive way and do you have any advice for young players? Football is the game of life. As a player, you have personal ups and downs, team wins and losses, and good and bad influences on and off the field. There are very few situations that I’ve encountered post-football that I cannot relate back to something I experienced on the field and had to work through mentally or physically. I would say that the game made me very mentally resilient, which is very valuable to anyone who focuses on building and scaling startups and early stage companies. For the young guys out there, I have two pieces of advice: Take control of your own goals and do not allow anyone to deter you from exceeding your own expectations. Avoid the people that do not make you feel good about yourself and get rid of the ones who do not reciprocate the same level of respect and support you have shown them. Do this now and do not wait. Tell your parents, teachers, coaches and mentors what you want out of life and ask them for help. If you want to do something extraordinary, you will need all the help you can get. As a matter of fact, asking for help is a sign of power and is extraordinary in and of itself. Not everyone has the courage to pursue something so difficult that it requires you to be so humble, so find something to pursue that will force you to stay hungry and humble. Find Derwin Jones as soon as you can, stick with him and you will reach your full athletic potential. He will make you realize potential that no one else can.

The Cass girls basketball team won for the 12th time in their last 13 games Tuesday night at home, defeating visiting Hiram for a Region 7AAAAA victory. All of the other four local girls high school teams lost region games Tuesday night, including a gut-wrenching, buzzer-beater loss by Cartersville at LaGrange. CASS GIRLS 55, HIRAM 33 The Lady Colonels won for the 12th time in their last 13 games Tuesday night at home with a Region 7AAAAA victory over Hiram. Cass led 11-6 after one period and maintained a 22-17 lead at the intermission, but opened up a big lead in the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Hornets 22-10 and took a 44-27 lead to the fourth quarter. Jana Morning led the Lady Colonels with 14 points. Kyla Michienzi and Chanel Clemmons tossed in 12 each. Esmeralda Thomas contributed seven points for Cass. Kyler Trouten added four points, Payton Stoddard three, and Lyric Curtis two points. Hiram is now 5-15 overall and 4-7 in region play. Cass (16-4, 9-3) hosts Rome Thursday night and county rival Woodland Friday night. LAGRANGE GIRLS 43, CARTERSVILLE 41 The Lady Canes have lost some tight games this season and Tuesday night at LaGrange was just another to add to that list. The Lady Grangers, who led by as many as 11 in the contest, hit a buzzer-beater to edge Cartersville 43-41 after the Lady Canes had rallied to tie late in the fourth quarter. Cartersville trailed by nine points going to the final period. Aryan Dozier led LaGrange with 16 points. Shania Woodard scored 15 and Chnairiea Strozier 12 for the Lady Grangers. LaGrange improved to 10-9 on the year and 4-3 in Region 5AAAA. Madison McKinney and Kimora McClinic led Cartersville with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Camilla Rodriquez and Addie Smith added four apiece. Amya Davis and Monica Motuba scored two points each. Cartersville (7-12, 1-6) entertains Sandy Creek Friday at 6pm and will host Chapel Hill Saturday at 6pm. BOWDON GIRLS 35, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 33 Excel led 4-2 after one quarter, but Bowdon took a 16-11 lead by the intermission and led 26-22 going to the fourth quarter before pulling out a two-point win. The loss was especially tough on Excel, who is battling for one of the last state playoff spots according to the most recent release of the GHSA Power Ratings for Class A Private Schools, where the Lady Eagles were ranked 23rd. The top 24 teams will qualify for the state playoffs. Brighton McCollum and Rylie Boston led ECA with eight points each. Kalli Beth Scheff tossed in seven points. Lindsey Mauldin and Whitney Harris finished with four points each. Landry McCollum scored two. Rylee Robinson led Bowdon with 13 points. Maci Holloway and Laken Thompson added seven each for the Lady Red Devils. Bowdon improved to 8-13 overall and 5-5 in region games -- including a season split with ECA. Excel (10-5, 6-3 Region 6A) travels to 8th-ranked Darlington Thursday night and hosts Gordon Lee Friday night. No. 8 CALHOUN GIRLS 56, ADAIRSVILLE 33 Jana Johns scored 17 points, Ashlyn Barnes 14, and Ryan Brzozoski 13 as the 8th-ranked Lady Jackets defeated Adairsville Tuesday. Calhoun led at all quarter stops, 16-8, 28-13, and 45-23, on their way to the 23-point win. Zay Harris led Adairsville with 11 points. Josie Summerville scored eight; Chloe Powell four; Emily Collum four; Nakiyah Washington three; and Havyn Isaac three for the Lady Tigers. Calhoun improved to 17-4 overall and 8-2 in region play. Adairsville (7-14, 2-8) travels to 4th-ranked Haralson County Friday. ROME GIRLS 44, WOODLAND 26 Lexie Robinson scored 14 points and Madgie Robinson eight as the Lady Cats trailed by only eight points heading to the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as Rome picked up the road, region win. The Lady Wolves improved to 15-4 overall and 8-3 in Region 7AAAAA. Woodland (0-17, 0-11) hosts Hiram at 6pm Wednesday and travels to Cass Friday night for a 7pm start. Woodland also plays at Rockmart Saturday afternoon at 2pm.

The Cass Colonels edged Hiram in a defensive struggle Tuesday night at home for the only local boys basketball win. The top-ten battle between Cartersville and LaGrange went the Grangers' way, while Woodland, Adairsville, and Excel Christian Academy also lost region matchups. CASS BOYS 34, HIRAM 33 Although they trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half Tuesday night at home, Cass’ Ian Whittington made a game-winning free throws with 0.7 seconds remaining to lift the Colonels to a dramatic 34-33 region win over visiting HIram. Cass trailed 19-10 at halftime in a defensive test, but fought back and made the plays down the stretch to pull out the win. The Colonels outscored Hiram 14-6 in the third quarter to take a 25-24 lead heading to the final eight minutes. C.J. Bennett led Cass with 11 points. Ashton Burley and Jake Collum scored six each. Whittington finished with five points. Hiram falls to 8-12 overall and 6-5 in region play with the road loss. Cass (15-6, 9-3 Region 7AAAAA) has region games remaining with Rome Thursday, Woodland Friday, and two with Carrollton January 31 and February 2. Carrollton and Kell are the current region standings leaders. No. 3 LaGRANGE BOYS 67, No. 8 CARTERSVILLE 52 LaGrange took a 14-13 lead after one quarter, led 34-26 at halftime, and extended their lead to 53-36 after three quarters in their home win over the Hurricanes. LaPerion Perry led the Grangers with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Teammates Gabe Duckett and Bo Russell followed with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Russell added seven boards. ROME BOYS 53, WOODLAND 45 The visiting Wolves led 12-11 after one quarter and pushed their lead to 13 points at one point in the third quarter, but Woodland hung around. Rome’s lead was 42-34 entering the final quarter. Justice Hayes and Camden Royal scored 10 points each for the Wildcats. Rome improved to 7-11 overall and 2-9 in Region 7AAAAA. Woodland (1-16, 0-11) hosts Hiram Wednesday and travels to Cass Friday night. CALHOUN BOYS 60, ADAIRSVILLE 48 Calhoun outscored the Adairsville boys 22-11 in the second quarter Tuesday night in Calhoun to make the biggest difference in an otherwise tight contest. Calhoun led 14-10 after one quarter, but pushed their advantage to 36-21 by halftime. Followed an even third quarter where both teams posted 12 points each, the visiting Tigers actually outscored Calhoun 15-12 in the final period. Calhoun improved to 15-4 overall and 10-0 in Region 6AAA South. Chapin Rierson led Calhoun with 14 points. Rhett Abernathy and Malik Lawrence added 13 each. Kaylan Aker added 12 points and grabbed six boards. Porter Law contributed 11 assists, five steals, and six rebounds for the Yellow Jackets. Adairsville (12-9, 5-5 Region 6AAA South) plays at Haralson County Friday night and at Christian Heritage Saturday night. These athletes were identified by their respective athletic departments for outstanding performances and contributions in 2016. The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes improved to 5-1 in Region 5AAAA with a one-sided win at Central-Carrollton Saturday and the Cass Colonels picked up a non-region victory at Armuchee. Woodland lost in overtime for the third time in the Wildcats' last four games and the Excel Christian Academy boys continue to seek their first win of the season. No. 10 CARTERSVILLE BOYS 77, CENTRAL-CARROLLTON 40 Jaylon Pugh scored 24 points, including 9-for-9 at the charity stripe and a thunder dunk in the third quarter, to lead the Canes to a 37-point blowout win at Region 5AAAA Central-Carrollton Saturday. T.J. Horton contributed 17 points, while Trase Fezzia and JKobe Orr each added 11 for the Hurricanes. Isaac Gridley grabbed 10 boards. Cartersville led 21-10 after one period and 43-26 at halftime on their way to a 63-30 advantage through three quarters. Central remained winless in seven Region 5AAAA games and fell to 4-17 overall. Cartersville (14-3, 5-1) travels to LaGrange Tuesday and hosts Sandy Creek Friday with Chapel Hill coming to the Storm Center Saturday. CASS BOYS 51, ARMUCHEE 41 Cass led 18-6 after one quarter and 30-13 at halftime on their way to an eventual 10-point, non-region win at Armuchee Saturday. Carter Hedden scored ten and Mark Chester nine to help lead the Colonels. Ian Whittington chipped in with seven points. Jake Collum and Jacquez Milles each added four. Armuchee dropped to 8-13 on the year following the loss. Cass (14-6, 8-3) hosts Region 7AAAAA foe Hiram on Tuesday. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD BOYS 60, WOODLAND 59 — Overtime For the third time in their last four games, the Woodland boys basketball team suffered an overtime defeat. This time at Southeast Whitfield in Dalton in a non-region contest. Woodland squandered an eight point halftime lead as the Raiders hit a buzzer-beater at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 51-all. Justice Carter led the Wildcats with 15 points. Hunter Johnson scored 12 and Jaylen Ballard 10 for Woodland. The Wildcats (1-15, 0-10) host Rome Tuesday and Hiram Wednesday before heading to county rival Cass Friday night. No. 2 NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN 75, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 15 Second ranked North Cobb Christian, led by Caleb Crumbly’s 17 points and Nate Perrin’s 13, powered past Excel Christian Academy Saturday. Excel (0-13, 0-8) was led by Taylor McDaniel with nine points. North Cobb Christian improved to 18-3 overall and remained unbeaten in Region 6A through ten region games. Excel plays at Bowdon Tuesday, at Darlington Thursday, and hosts Gordon Lee on Friday.

Three of the five local high school girls basketball teams earned victories Saturday. Adairsville, Cass, and Excel Christian Academy each picked up wins. Cartersville and Woodland suffered losses. CASS GIRLS 53, ARMUCHEE 42 Cass senior guard Jana Morning scored 22 points and eclipsed the 1,000 point plateau for her career as the Lady Colonels won for the tenth time in their last eleven games. Saturday’s road win at Armuchee was the fifteenth of the year for Cass. Armuchee (8-10) led 16-15 after one period, but Cass rallied to take a 28-25 lead at halftime and held a 41-35 advantage after three quarters. Esmeralda Thomas scored 16 points for the Lady Colonels. Chanel Clemmons added eight. Kyler Trouten and Payton Stoddard contributed three points each and Kyla Michienzi rounded out the scoring with one point. Cass (15-4, 8-3 Region 7-AAAAA) has three region home games next week including Tuesday night with Hiram at 6pm, Thursday against Rome at 6pm, and vs. Woodland Friday at 7pm. EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY GIRLS 37, NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN 25 The Lady Eagles avenged a loss from earlier in the season with a 37-25 victory over visiting North Cobb Christian Saturday afternoon. North Cobb Christian led 9-6 after one period, but Excel captured the lead by halftime, 17-16. The Lady Eagles held North Cobb Christian to only two points in the third quarter to take a 29-18 lead. Rylie Boston and Kalli Beth Scheff led Excel with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Whitney Harris added seven points and Brighton McCollum scored four for the Lady Eagles. Gabby Mills led North Cobb Christian (4-14, 2-8 Region 6A) with 11 points. ECA improved to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in region play. They travel to Bowdon Tuesday at 6pm and play at Darlington Thursday night. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD GIRLS 42, WOODLAND 26 Lexie Robinson led Woodland with nine points and Carli Clymer scored six in a non-region game at Southeast Whitfield Saturday as the Lady Cats remained winless on the year. Southeast, who led 28-14 at halftime, improved to 15-6 for the year. The Lady Cats (0-16, 0-10 Region 7AAAAA) entertain Rome Tuesday at 6pm. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 62, GEORGIA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF 42 Adairsville led 23-7 after one period and 37-16 by the intermission on their way to a 20-point non-region win over Georgia School for the Deaf Saturday afternoon. The Lady Tigers, led by 22 points from Josie Summerville and 12 by Nakiyah Washington, led 48-26 after three quarters. Chynah Johnson scored a game-high 38 points and Zariah Clay added four points for the visitors. Havyn Isaac chipped in eight points for Adairsville, followed by Alexa Varner with six, Taylor Greene and Zay Harris with five each, Latya Printup and Lori Cimino with two each. The loss dropped GSD to 7-6 for the season. Adairsville (7-13, 2-7 Region 6AAA-South) returns to region play Tuesday at Calhoun at 6pm and has road games at Haralson County Friday and at Christian Heritage Saturday. CENTRAL-CARROLLTON GIRLS 54, CARTERSVILLE 42 Central of Carrollton improved to 7-12 for the season and picked up the first region win of the year for the Lady Lions by downing Cartersville Saturday. Central led by only eight — 25-17 at halftime — but the Lady Canes went scoreless for most of the third quarter to slip into a 16-point deficit heading into the final eight minutes. Kimora McClinic led Cartersville in scoring with nine points. The Lady Canes (7-11, 1-5 Region 5AAAA) play at LaGrange Tuesday at 6pm.

The championship tournament for the 2016-17 basketball season begins Saturday, January 21 for the Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association with a full slate of games at both the Storm Center at Cartersville High School and at Cartersville Middle School. The two girls' championship brackets begin play with seven games at Cartersville Middle School. The two boys' championship brackets open play with seven games at the Storm Center on the high school campus. The tournament continues with semifinal games for all four divisions -- JV Girls, JV Boys, Girls, and Boys -- throughout the following week and tournament championship games will be played Saturday, January 28.
