Cartersville softball ace, Hannah Todd, tossed a pair of shutouts Wednesday evening as the Lady Canes swept a doubleheader at Chestatee and won their best-of-three first round Class AAAA series. Todd, a University of North Carolina commit, (photo right) tossed a two-hitter and a three-hitter in the two victories. Cartersville won the opener 4-0 and took the series clincher and the nightcap, 8-0. Cartersville posted single runs in the first and third innings in Game 1 before adding two more tallies in the fifth inning. Paris Poston had two hits, including a triple, and scored two runs in the first game. Colbi Ballard had a two-run single. Tara Mathis also drove in a run with a hit. Madison McKinney added another Cartersville hit. Macee Cole and Molly Wilson swiped bases in the opener. Lauren McElhaney contributed a sacrifice. Todd struck out 12 and did not issue a walk in Game 1. In the second game, Cartersville — playing as the home team — broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Lady Canes went up 5-0 in the fourth inning and closed out the mercy rule win in the fifth with three more runs. Poston and Kayla Stephenson finished the second game with two hits and two RBIs each. One of Poston’s hits was a double. Both Stephenson hits were doubles. McKinney added a pair of hits. Mathis, Todd, and Wilson each added a hit. McElhaney drove in a run. Cole contributed a sacrifice. Todd scattered three hits and struck out four in the five-inning shutout. She issued two walks. Cartersville (20-11) advances to the second round where they will face either Northside-Columbus, the top seed from Region 1-AAAA, or fourth-seeded Hephzibah of Region 3-AAAA in a best-of-three series that starts October 19. Woodland softball swept a doubleheader at Miller Grove Wednesday night to win their first round Class AAAAA playoff series. The Lady Cats won the opener 5-3 and closed out the best-of-three series in the nightcap, 11-3. In the opener, Woodland took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth to lead 5-2. The Lady Cats then held on for a two-run win. In the Game 2 series clincher, Woodland scored three runs in each of their first three frames to grab a 9-3 lead, then added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game in five innings, 11-3. Sarah Baynard (12 IP, 5ER, 14H, 2BB, 10K) needed only 75 pitches in each game to pick up both wins in the pitching circle for the Lady Cats. Brittney Cox led the Woodland offensive attack with seven hits, including a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs in the doubleheader. Caroline Higdon had a pair of doubles in her four hit series. She scored three runs and drove in four. Jordan Duck and Skylar Chappell finished the series with three hits each. All three hits by Chappell were doubles and she drove in a pair of runs. Duck’s three hits included one double and one RBI. She scored twice and stole a base. Jamison Kilgo contributed a pair of hits, stole two bases, scored a run and drove in one. Bella Carnes added one RBI with a hit, three runs scored, and four stolen bases. Kaylee Jones scored three runs. Morgan Bailey scored twice and Emma Jordan added one RBI. Woodland (15-19) advances to the Class AAAAA second round where they will face Whitewater. The Lady Wildcats from Fayetteville swept Bainbridge in the first round -- also on Wednesday 4-1, and 13-2. Excel Christian Academy was swept in an opening doubleheader of their Class A Private first round softball series at Darlington Wednesday. Darlington won the two games, 7-3 and 12-0, to eliminate Excel in their best-of-three series. The Tigers advance to play Tattnall Square Academy in the second round, while the Lady Eagles’ season comes to a close. Excel scored first in the top of the third inning of the opener, before Darlington posted five runs in the bottom of the third to capture a lead they would not relinquish. The home-standing Lady Tigers went up 7-1 in the sixth and Excel scored twice in the top of the seventh for a 7-3 final score. Olivia Adams and Sydney Seymour combined for four hits and three RBIs to lead the Darlington offense. In Game 2, Darlington scored seven runs in the second inning on their way to a 12-0 shutout. Olivia Adams had four hits, two RBIs, and scored twice for the Lady Tigers in the series clinching win. Josi McKibben and Alex Gardner both added one hit and two RBIs for Darlington. Taylor Gibson had three hits in the series for Excel and scored a run. Landry McCollum had two hits, one RBI, on stolen base, and scored a run. Rachel Parrott had two hits. Whitney Harris (run scored), Aliza Baker (double, RBI), Brighton McCollum, and Lindsey Mauldin had one hit each. Kalli Beth Scheff contributed a sacrifice. Kathryne Ledbetter (7 IP, 3R, 2ER, 9H, 0BB, 0K) was the complete game winning pitcher for Darlington in the opener. Gibson (6 IP, 7R, 3ER, 9H, 2BB, 1K) was the losing pitcher in the first game for Excel. Josi McKibben tossed a two-hitter in the Game 2 shutout for Darlington. CARTERSVILLE PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT YOUTH FOOTBALL Thursday, October 6 The 8U Canes Silver won the team challenge October 6 which included three events. Each child participated against the clock and the other teams in an obstacle course which included elements of speed, agility, ball skills, strength and stamina. Each team also sent one player to the quarterback toss where he threw for distance and accuracy. As always, the favorite event was the tug of war where each team matches up against the other three teams. Highlights for 8U Canes Silver Reed Ezell was fastest on the obstacle course with a time of 31.32 seconds. Ezell's finish was approximately two seconds quicker than the next closes time. Ezell also won the QB toss with his longest throw measured at 68.5 feet. Other standouts in the course were Dixon Lindsay with a time of 36.56, Zeke Price at 35.02 and Damian Smith Jr. at 36.73. The team as a whole averaged 40.98 seconds which edged out the second place team by .28 seconds. Canes Silver also did well in the tug of war challenge winning two of three matches. Highlights for 8U Canes Purple Team Purple took second place with a great showing led by Hudson Lusk. He covered the obstacle course in 33.18 seconds. Peyton Emery was next for Canes Purple in 35 seconds. Harris Turner was clocked at 36.06, Asa Mitcham at 36.31, Collier Jordan at 36.77 and Donovan Gooch covered the course in 36.92. Team Purple was led by Mitcham on the QB toss. His throw measured 61.5 feet. Team Purple also dominated the Tug of War competition with a perfect record of 3-0. Recipients for the week ending October 8, 2016: Taylor Gibson -- Excel Christian Academy Hunter Hardin -- Woodland High School Trevor Lawrence -- Cartersville High School Jaylon Stubbs -- Cass High School Taylor Gibson is the Excel Christian Academy Elite Athlete of the Week. She is the daughter of Casey Gibson and the granddaughter of Danny Owens. A junior, who has played softball for the past six years, Gibson has been a crucial part of the Excel softball program that has qualified for the state playoffs each of the past three seasons. Gibson has been a mainstay for the Lady Eagles’ pitching staff and continues to be one of the top pitchers in the region. She has improved her offensive skills and has played second base this season when not pitching. She was named to the All County Softball Team and was selected to the All-Region 6-A team last year. Coach Michael Adcock praises Taylor for her “bulldog like” tenacity on the pitching mound. “She just comes at you nonstop throughout the course of the game and does not get rattled. She competes on every pitch.” Adcock concluded. Her favorite subject is psychology because she says ‘it deals with the abstract and makes you think outside the box.’ Gibson attends New Zion Baptist Church in Acworth. Her future plans include attending college to play softball while majoring in criminal justice. Hunter Hardin is the Elite Athlete of the Week for Woodland High School. The son of Patrick and Valerie Weise, Hardin is a senior offensive lineman and defensive tackle for the Wildcats’ football team. Hardin is identified as a young man of character by the Woodland coaching staff. He is a leader in the classroom, in the weight room, and on the football field. He is also a varsity wrestler. Trevor Lawrence is the Elite Athlete of the Week representing Cartersville High School. Lawrence, who helped lead the Canes to a state title and a 15-0 record at quarterback last season, has Cartersville at 7-0 and ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA again in 2016. He was 18-of-29 passing for 283 yards and four touchdowns in a 52-7 victory over LaGrange last week. He also ran for three scores. For the season, his passing numbers are 121-of-192 for 1,900 yards and 24 touchdowns. The son of Jeremy and Amanda Lawrence, the Canes’ junior quarterback is the national consensus No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2018. The Elite Athlete of the Week for Cass High School is football senior nose-guard Jaylon Stubbs. Stubbs' consistent and dominant play up front has been a key for the continued strong performance of the Colonels’ defense. He has been physically strong at the point of attack, making it difficult on opposing offenses to run the football. Stubbs is the son of Jocelyn Long. The GHSA state fast pitch softball playoffs get underway Wednesday with two local teams on the road. The Cartersville Lady Canes, in Class AAAA, travel to Gainesville to take on Chestatee. The Woodland Lady Cats, in Class AAAAA, will be in Lithonia to play Miller Grove. Meanwhile, the Excel Christian Academy Lady Eagles will travel to Rome to play Darlington. Each matchup is a doubleheader on Wednesday to open a best-of-three series. Darlington (10-18) will host all games in the series that begins with a doubleheader Wednesday. If a third game in the best-of-three series is needed, it will be played on Thursday. The series winner advances to the second round to face No. 4 seed, Tattnall Square Academy, in Macon October 18-19. The Lady Trojans received a first round bye and are 20-7 on the year. Adairsville volleyball head coach Patricia McPhee refers to part of her team’s 2016 season as a ‘roller coaster ride’, but she has the Lady Tigers in the enviable position of hosting an opening round match in the Class AAA state tournament Wednesday when they entertain Ringgold. Adairsville, who heads into the state playoffs with a 19-24-3 record, lost in the Area 1-AAA championship match to Sonoraville 25-21, 25-19 last Saturday, but the Lady Tigers took care of business with a pair of match wins that propelled them into that area finals match. (Photo Credit: Louis Tonsmeire, Tonsmeire Studio Professional Photography) The Lady Tigers opened the Area Tournament last Thursday with a three-set win over Bremen. The Blue Devils took the opening set 25-19 before Adairsville rallied for a 25-17, 25-19 win that ensured them of a state playoffs berth from Area 1-AAA. Then on Saturday after a narrow three-set loss to the eventual champs (22-25, 25-21, 21-25), the Lady Tigers dispatched Haralson County in two straight sets, 25-23, 25-16 for a championship round rematch with Sonoraville that was taken by the Phoenix in straight sets. The Lady Tigers have been led all season by seniors Chloe Powell and Sierra Matthews. Powell is a setter and right side hitter who leads the team in service percentage, service aces, and is second in total assists. She also has a kill percentage of 66 percent. Matthews is an aggressive, outside hitter leading the Lady Tigers with 2.4 kills per game. “They (Powell and Matthews) are the players the team looks to when we need a spark to get back on track,” said McPhee praising her two senior captains. Middle hitter, Josie Summerville, has also been an impact player for the Lady Tigers. She leads the team in blocks and is second on the team in service percentage and digs per game. “Josie is always a threat from that middle position,” added McPhee. “She has contributed some timely kills and blocks throughout the season.” McPhee was happy her team was ready to play in the area tournament. “We started the season strong at the Rockmart Tournament, finishing third, but as the season progressed we had our roller coaster moments — as I call them. We were really good at times and just flat at others. I’m pleased we came out ready to play last Thursday and it carried over into Saturday,” noted the Lady Tigers’ coach. McPhee also was proud of her team’s performance in the pressures of tournament play. “The first loss to Sonoraville on Saturday threw us off a bit. The girls played with a lot of intensity, but we were able to bounce back against Haralson County following a slow start to get back to the area championship game,” said McPhee. “We played well. I am proud of my players. The girls gave it all they had. I can’t ask for more than that.” The Adairsville coach also had praise for the area champion Lady Phoenix. “Sonoraville is a very good team and well coached,” she added. Adairsville will host the first round of the GHSA Class AAA state playoffs Wednesday at 5pm against Ringgold. The remainder of the Lady Tigers top contributers this season include Chloe Cochran, Taylor Camp, and Nakiyah Washington. Aleah Abernathy, Victoria Worthington, and Emily Green round out the roster. “We are excited to be hosting the first round of the state tournament,” McPhee closed.

The Cartersville volleyball team won the Area 5-AAAA championship tournament last week at Sandy Creek and will have an opportunity to host the first two rounds of the state playoffs as a No. 1 seed. The Lady Canes will open the playoffs Thursday by hosting Hephizibah — the fourth-seed from Area 3-AAAA — in the first round. The winner of the Cartersville/Hephizibah match will play the Heritage-Catoosa/Northside-Columbus survivor in the second round October 18. Cartersville would host the second round if they advance past Hephzibah. The Lady Canes are 28-16 on the year heading into the state playoffs and they are riding a nine-match winning streak that included Area 5-AAAA tournament wins over Troup County and Sandy Creek. Those two teams had beaten Cartersville earlier in the season. Cartersville’s improvement may be attributed, in part, to a rigorous non-area schedule that included some of the top teams from all classifications. The Lady Canes have succeeded with a balanced lineup that has seen major contributions from a variety of players. Junior Catie Heilman leads the team in kills with sophomore Rebekah Stevens and freshman Lauren Wenzell not too far behind. Sophomore Nedu Evans and 5’10” junior Elsa Evans are tops among the Lady Canes in blocks. Another 5’10” blocker, Grace Hunter, is a team statistical leader in the defensive category. Anna Mathis and Heilman lead the team in digs per match, while senior Kameron Hendrix is tops on the team with 533 assists and Hunter leads the team in service aces. The remainder of the Lady Canes’ roster includes Addie Smith (Jr., 100 digs, 24 kills); Jayla Delgado (Jr., 33 digs, 18 assists); and Bella Corrigan (So., 90 digs). The Lady Canes lost their head coach, Camille Spradley, for unspecified reasons just over two weeks ago. The team has rallied, however, to play some of their best volleyball of the year during the playoffs. Athletic Director Darrell Demastus is heading the team with assistance from Dutch Cochran. “The girls are getting the job done,” stated Demastus. “They know their roles and know what they are supposed to do. It’s now just a matter of performing.” The first two rounds of the state playoffs are hosted at higher seeded school sites. The third round and beyond is hosted at Marietta High School.
