- Seaman tosses complete game as Tigers defeat Murray County; Excel blanked by Walker
Sam Seaman pitched a complete game at home and the Adairsville Tigers defeated Murray County Tuesday night in six innings, 12-2. Adairsville took a 7-0 lead after three innings, added a run in the fifth and wrapped things up with a four-run sixth. The visiting Indians scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Seaman (6 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 9K) earned the win on the mound and also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored. Hayden Morrow also had two hits for the Tigers that included a double and scored three runs. Garrett Mishoe, Kyler Pelfrey, Drake Arp, Taylor Whitley, Hunter Hice, and Landon Howren added one hit each for Adairsville. The Tigers (9-6, 5-2 in Region 6-AAA) play at Calhoun Wednesday (March 30). WALKER 10, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 0 Joseph Cuomo and Blane Belisario had the only hits for the Eagles as they were shutout by Walker in six innings Tuesday night. Luke and Jake Depiero, Luke Vonderhaar, and Zach Camp had multi-hit games for the Wolverines who improved to 10-5 overall and 10-3 in Region 6-A. Excel (1-12, 0-11 in 6-A) hosts Trion Thursday (March 31) at LakePoint.

The Adairsville Lady Tigers kept their undefeated season going Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory in Calhoun over Gordon Central, but the Cartersville, Woodland, and Cass girls' teams all suffered region or sub-region losses. ADAIRSVILLE LADY TIGERS 3, GORDON CENTRAL 0 The 7th-ranked Lady Tigers won their eleventh straight and remained unbeaten on the season with a Region 6-AAA win Tuesday night at Gordon Central. Kaitlyn Webster gave Adairsville a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 7th minute. Emily Collum added another Lady Tigers’ goal in the 14th minute, and Gillian Johnson closed out the scoring with a goal in the 79th minute. Goalkeeper Hayven Isaac recorded the shutout in net. Adairsville (11-0, 5-0 in 6-AAA) plays two more region matches this week. The Tigers play at North Murray Thursday and entertain Sonoraville Friday. HERITAGE-CATOOSA 2, CARTERSVILLE LADY CANES 1 The Lady Canes suffered a tough Region 7-AAAA loss at Heritage-Catoosa Tuesday night in Ringgold, falling 2-1. Heritage improved to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the region with the home victory. Cartersville (9-2-1, 5-1-1) plays a pair of non-region matches later this week. The Lady Canes play at Marietta Thursday and at Woodland Friday. CREEKVIEW 4, WOODLAND LADY CATS 0 The visiting Lady Grizzlies scored goals in the 4th, 18th, and 33rd minutes to take a 3-0 halftime lead at Woodland Tuesday night on their way to a 4-0 sub-region win. Creekview (10-3-1, 5-1 7-AAAAA-A) added a final tally at the 30:19 mark of the second half. The Lady Cats (5-7, 2-4 in 7-AAAAA-A) host Cartersville Friday for their senior night. RIVER RIDGE 10, CASS LADY COLONELS 0 The visiting Lady Colonels were shutout Tuesday night at River Ridge, 10-0, in both teams final regular season sub-region match. The Lady Knights evened their season mark at 6-6 with the win and finished 3-3 in 7-AAAAA-A. Cass (3-9-1, 0-6) finished winless in sub-region matches. The Lady Colonels play at Hiram Thursday in a non-region match.
- Cartersville blanks Ridgeland; Woodland beaten by Ohio team
CARTERSVILLE 13, RIDGELAND 0 (5 innings) The Canes scored a dozen runs in the second inning and a trio of Cartersville pitchers combined for a one-hit, five-inning shutout of visiting Ridgeland Tuesday night at Richard Bell Field in Atco. Jacob Fowler (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K) started and picked up the pitching win. Zach Yancey (2 IP, 0R, 0BB, 1H), and Carrington Evans (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) closed out the final three frames. Cartersville scored 12 runs in their half of the second inning. Spencer Dickey had a double and a single in the inning.. Evans and Fowler also doubled. Parker Tidwell singled and had a sacrifice fly, while Yancey, Cole Jamieson, and Elliott Anderson all had hits in the frame. Toss in three walks, a dropped third strike, and an infield error and the Canes had scored a dozen runs and sent 16 men to the plate in the inning. The Canes added a final run in the fourth when Devin Warner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Thomas Watkins and Roderick Winburn reached on a dropped third strike and an error to start the inning and Parker Roberson loaded the bases for Warner with an infield hit. Evans finished a productive day at the plate with two doubles, a walk, a run scored, and one RBI. Dickey had a pair of RBI and scored twice with his two hits. Ridgeland slipped to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in Region 7-AAAA with the loss. Cartersville (7-7, 3-1 in 7-AAAA) is scheduled to host Southeast Whitfield Thursday (March 31) at 5:55pm and travels to Heritage-Catoosa Friday (April 1) for a pair of region games. TROY (Ohio) 10, WOODLAND 6 Troy High School (Ohio) defeated the Wildcats 10-6 Tuesday night. Woodland scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the visiting Trojans would answer with ten, unanswered runs to take control. Woodland's Grant Robinson scored on a ground ball that was booted by the Troy shortstop in the first inning. Jacob Frye had singled to open the inning, but was forced out on a fielder’s choice by Robinson. Troy scored six runs in the top of the second on three singles, a pair of walks, and three Wildcat errors. The Trojans later took a 10-1 lead in the fifth scoring four runs on only one hit. There were two hit batsmen, two walks, and two infield errors. The Wildcats scored in the fifth and sixth innings to pull within four, but got no closer. Frye walked and later scored on a passed ball in the fifth, before Trent Harrison hit a two-run homer. In the sixth, Kolby Stancel drove home Brandon Allen who had singled to start the inning and Noah Ludy who had walked. Woodland starting pitcher, Grayson Bagwell (1.1 IP, 6R, 2ER, 3H, 3BB, 1K), suffered the loss. Tommy Peed (3.1 IP, 4R, 0ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K) and Rodolpho Romo (2.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB) also pitched for the Wildcats. Woodland (2-14) entertains Kell in another non-region game Wednesday (March 30) at 5:55pm.
- Cartersville Middle School wins 2016 BGMSAA tennis titles
The 2016 Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association tennis season wrapped up Monday with its tournament finals. Cartersville Middle School won both the girls and boys 2016 team titles. Calhoun Middle School was runner-up in the girls and boys divisions. Team results were based on regular season match results. - Morrow sac fly lifts Tigers to walk-off win; Knights blank Colonels; Excel falls to Ohio team
The Tigers’ Hayden Morrow hit a sacrifice fly to left field Monday night, scoring Lane Griffith, to enable Adairsville to escape with a walk-off, 6-5 non-region win over visiting Armuchee. Adairsville made the most of only four hits, but took advantage of six Indians’ errors. Armuchee (2-13) took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning, but Adairsville responded with four runs over the next two frames to regain the lead at 5-3. The visiting Indians scored twice in the top of the sixth to tie the game 5-5 before Morrow’s RBI ended the game in the seventh. Armuchee reliever, Cole Phillips, was saddled with the pitching loss. He entered in the seventh and only recorded the one out. Will Phillips led the Indians at the plate with two hits and two RBI. Sam Seaman, Justin Green, Drake Arp, and Dylan Hightower had Adairsville’s hits. Seaman, Green, Arp, and Morrow had one RBI each. Kyler Pelfrey picked up the pitching victory with an inning and 1/3 of work. He allowed only one walk, no hits or runs, and struck out four. Taylor Whitley started on the bump (1.2 IP, 3ER, 0H, 6BB, 4K) and Orry Carter (4 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 5K) also pitched for the Tigers. Adairsville (8-6) returns to Region 6-AAA play at home Tuesday (March 29) against Murray County at 5:55pm. They travel to Calhoun Thursday (March 31). RIVER RIDGE 8, CASS 0 Senior Zach Cable tossed a complete game shutout as River Ridge shutout Cass in Woodstock Monday night, 8-0. The contest was the first of three this week between the two sub-region opponents. Cable (7 IP, 0R, 3H, 1BB, 6K) got all the run support he would need in the second inning when the Knights scored five runs. They added single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings. River Ridge (9-6, 6-4 in 7-AAAAA-A) pounded out 11 hits with two each from Conner Pavolony, Luke Berryhill, and Nick Blubaugh. Casey Patterson, Jordan Reed, and Nathan Smith had the only Cass hits — all singles. Reed also stole a base. Cass used a quartet of pitchers in the loss. Reed (1.2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 5H, 4BB, 1K) started and picked up the loss. Austin Pruett (2.1 IP, 2ER, 6H, 0BB), Cody Johnson (1 IP, 1ER, 0H, 3BB, 2K), and Steven Spell (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) each spent time of the mound. The Colonels (4-11, 3-7 in 7-AAAAA-A) will host the Knights Wednesday (5:55pm) and will return to River Ridge Friday (5:55pm) to complete the three-game set. OLENTANGY LIBERTY 10, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 0 Olentangy Liberty High School (Powell, OH) pitcher, Preston Stanley, threw a five-inning, no-hitter Monday night at LakePoint to blank Excel Christian Academy, 10-0. Stanley struck out eight and walked two. Nine runs in the opening three innings gave the Patriots enough offense to defeat the Eagles. An RBI triple by Spencer Yankle, an RBI single by Chase Gresock, an RBI single by Zach Arnold, a sacrifice fly by Hunter Voorhees, and an RBI single by Connor Stewart in the first inning set the tone. Corey Mayer added an RBI double in the second inning to continue the Patriots' charge. Connor Stewart racked up two RBIs on two hits for Olentangy Liberty Patriots. Excel (1-11) hosts Walker Tuesday (5:30pm) and Trion Thursday (5:30pm) at LakePoint.

Former Woodland High School standout, Sydney Hodorff, has made an immediate impact as the starting catcher for NCAA D-III LaGrange College. Hodorff headlines this week's softball update for 'Athletes Beyond Bartow.' The freshman is currently carrying a .315 batting average through 21 games for the Panthers. Reinhardt's Randi Wimpy also continues to scorch NAIA and Appalachian Athletic Conference opponents with her .435 batting average .804 slugging percentage. Former Lady Cane and current Samford Bulldog, Annalyn Yantis, also picked up her first pitching victory. March 20 she worked four innings in the circle against Howard University, allowing a pair of earned runs on three hits and two walks. She struck out two as Samford won 11-4. In a March 26 win at Mercer University, Yantis pitched two innings allowing an earned run on two hits. She struck out one. She has pitched 15 and 2/3 innings in seven appearances with a 6.32 ERA. - Anderson heads group of local high school baseball players selected 2016 Rawlings/PG superlatives
St. Louis, Mo. — Rawlings and Perfect Game announced last week its Preseason All-American Teams to recognize the top underclass high school baseball athletes in the U.S (Class of 2017, 2018, 2019). The Rawlings-Perfect Game Preseason All American 1st, 2nd and 3rd team recognizes 300 players from the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Each team consists of 100 players who are currently juniors, sophomores, or freshmen in high school. Hunter Osborn improved to 5-1 in eight starts for Reinhardt University with a five-inning performance last week and Sean McDermott continued his hot hitting trend with a 7-for-12 week for Cleveland State CC. BASEBALL Week ending Sunday, March 27 CLIFTON DEMPSEY — Maryville College (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . the Scots second baseman was 1-for-3 with one RBI in an 8-3 home loss to Berry College March 22. He was 1-for-8 with a walk in a home, weekend conference series with Huntington. Maryville lost two of three and slipped to 19-9 overall and 9-6 in the USA South Athletic Conference. Dempsey has a .307 batting average in 27 games played. He has 10 RBI and seven stolen bases. The Scots host a doubleheader with Rust College March 28 and travel to Emory for a two-game set, April 2-3. BO EDWARDS — University of North Georgia (Sr., Adairsville HS) . . . walked four times and drove in a run in a start as designated hitter March 26 as the Nighthawks lost 7-6 at Armstrong State. North Georgia won two of three in Savannah and also defeated University of West Georgia earlier in the week. UNG (16-13 overall, 8-10 in Peach Belt Conference) hosts Anderson University March 29 and has a home, three-game conference series with Lander University April 1-3. TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . allowed two hits and a walk, but no runs with five strikeouts in a two inning relief appearance March 23 at home during an 11-3 win over Midland (Neb.) College. Fowler has pitched seven and one-third innings in five appearances with a 2.45 ERA and a .267 batting average against. The 21st-ranked Yellow Jackets’ shortstop has a .372 batting average and has started all 23 games. Justus has hit a pair of homeruns and has 13 extra base hits driving in 17 runs. CODY LEDBETTER — Young Harris College (Fr., Cass HS) . . . made his second appearance of the season March 26, retiring the only UNC-Pembroke batter he faced in two pitches with a fly out during a 10-3 loss. The Mountain Lions won one of three conference games over the weekend with the visiting Braves. Young Harris (10-19 overall, 5-13 Peach Belt Conference) plays host to Lee University March 29 and travels to Anderson University for a non-conference, three-game series April 2-3. SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Adairsville HS) . . . went 7-for-12, scored four runs, and drove in three during a three-game, home series against Chattanooga State CC. McDermott has a .393 batting average in 26 games for the Cougars and has driven in 18 runs. Cleveland State (17-11 overall, 8-4 TCCAA) entertains the University of Cumberlands (KY) JV in a doubleheader March 28 and travels to Walters State CC April 1-2 for three games. HUNTER OSBORN — Reinhardt University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . bounced back from his only loss of the year with a 90-pitch, 5-inning winning performance at Milligan College (TN). The 3-2 win enabled the Eagles to salvage one game in the three-game, conference series. Osborn allowed only one run on two hits and five walks. He struck out seven, dropping his season ERA to 1.93. He has now pitched 42 innings and has a .188 batting average against. Reinhardt (22-12 overall, 6-6 Appalachian Athletic Conference) has a home, non-conference game with Georgia Gwinnett College March 29 and entertains a three-game, conference series with Point University April 1-2. Will has made eight appearance for the Vikings, striking out three. He has recorded one save in eight innings of work with a 3.38 ERA. Berry was 4-0 for the week with a conference sweep of Rhodes College. The Vikings (21-8 overall, 7-5 Southern Athletic Association) play at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta April 1-2 for a three-game conference series. CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . the right-hand reliever made an appearance at Flagler College March 25 and got out of a sixth inning jam with a pop up and a fly out. He then returned to the mound in the seventh and walked a batter before being lifted for a lefty-lefty matchup. Wilson has nine relief appearances with a 4.85 ERA. The Cougars won a home, non-conference game over Point University March 23, but were swept in St. Augustine by conference foe, Flagler College March 25-26. 17th-ranked Columbus State (22-10 overall, 9-6 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Auburn-Montgomery March 30 before traveling to Georgia Southwestern for a three-game, conference series April 1-2.
