- Canes, Lady Generals win head-to-head track and field meet
The track and field teams from Cartersville and Heritage competed Tuesday afternoon at Cartersville High School with the Canes winning 284-221 and the Heritage-Catoosa girls defeating the Lady Canes, 252-213. In the boys' meet, the Canes won the sprints, distance runs, throws, and jumps. The Generals outscored the Cartersville boys in the hurdles and relays. The Lady Canes outscored the Lady Generals in the distance runs, throws, and jumps. - Darton State’s four run sixth tops Chargers, 5-2
Visiting Darton State took charge of a tight game Tuesday night with a four-run sixth inning to defeat Georgia Highlands College 5-2 at LakePoint in Emerson. The game was the 2016 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams and opened a four-game series between the two clubs that continues this weekend in Albany. Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning. Zach McCrum, Daniel Gooden, and Jonathan White all singled to load the bases in the Chargers’ fourth inning. Drew Davis then grounded into a fielder’s choice, allowing McCrum to scored on the putout. After the Cavaliers’ took a 5-1 lead, Georgia Highlands added an eighth inning run on a single, walk, and fielder’s choice, but that is as close as the Chargers would come. Sam Goberdhan (6 IP, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 4K) was the winning pitcher for Darton State. Landon Crowder and Matt Harman led the Cavaliers with two hits each. McCrum, who had two hits at the plate and scored a run, suffered the pitching loss. He worked 5 and 1/3 innings, allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits and four walks. McCrum recorded three strikeouts. Chris Morton (0.1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 0BB) and Tanner Thomson (3.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 5K) also pitched. Georgia Highlands (15-14 overall, 0-1 GCAA) travels to Darton State to complete the four-game conference series with a single game Friday and a doubleheader Saturday (March 18-19).
- North Murray's seventh bests Tigers
The Adairsville and North Murray baseball teams went six scoreless innings Tuesday night, but the visiting Mountaineers’ five-run seventh was the difference in a 5-2 Region 6-AAA defeat of the Tigers. North Murray’s Waylyn James (7 IP, 1ER, 4H, 2BB, 5K) picked up a complete-game win on the mound for the Mountaineers. Kyler Pelfrey (6 IP, 0R, 5H, 2BB, 10K) had a solid performance on the mound for Adairsville, but left with a no decision. Noah O’Kelley was saddled with the pitching loss, working the final frame. Blake Davis had two hits and two RBI to lead North Murray. James also had two hits. Landon Howren, Lane Griffith, Hayden Morrow, and O’Kelley had the Tigers’ hits — all singles. Adairsville (4-4 overall, 1-1 Region 6-AAA) hosts Coahulla Creek Thursday and travels to Sonoraville Friday. Both region games are scheduled for 5:55pm starts.
- Colonels soccer blanks Pickens, 5-0
The Cass boys soccer team had five different players score goals Tuesday night as the Colonels beat Pickens in a non-region match at Doug Cochran Stadium, 5-0. Andrew Palma put Cass ahead 1-0 with the only goal of the first half in the 27th minute. Moises Martinez, Jorge Cabanas, Mayron Medina, and Carlos Perez each added a second half goal for the Colonels. Brandon Romero led the Cass defense as Cass finished with its fourth clean sheet of the season. Alex Martinez assisted on the Medina goal and Palma was credited with an assist on the Perez tally. The other goals were unassisted. Cass (5-2-1, 1-1 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A) returns to region play Friday entertaining Creekview in a 7pm kickoff.
- Cartersville soccer teams shutout Gilmer
LADY CANES 4, GILMER 0 The Cartersville girls blanked region rival Gilmer at home Tuesday night, 4-0. Kate Justus (4th minute), Claire Choate (17th minute), Marissa Mowry (28th minute PK), and Paxton Thompson (67th minute PK) scored the goals. The Lady Canes (7-1 overall, 4-0 Region 7-AAAA) play at North Cobb Christian on Wednesday (6:30pm) and at Ridgeland Friday (6pm). CANES 3, GILMER 0 The Cartersville boys scored three goals in the first half for a home, Region 7-AAAA shutout victory Tuesday night. Osbaldo Senderos scored on an assist from Pedro Robledo to open the scoring. Robledo added a goal of his own in the 21st minute off an assist from Jonathan Cruz, and Edwin Betancourt scored on a penalty kick. The Canes (7-2 overall, 3-1 Region 7-AAAA) play at Ridgeland Friday (7pm).

- River Ridge soccer defeats Wildcats
The Woodland boys soccer team fell to visiting River Ridge Tuesday night, 5-1, in a sub-region match. The Wildcats tied the score at 1-1 in the 11th minute when Diony Ochoa scored Woodland’s only goal of the night. The two teams battled scoreless for the remainder of the first half, but the Knights dominated the second half scoring four unanswered goals for their first win of the year. Woodland (0-7, 0-3 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A) entertains Sequoyah Friday in a 7:30pm start.
- Errors costly as Excel Christian loses to St. Francis
Excel and St. Francis remained scoreless through the first three innings Tuesday night, but the visiting Knights’ offense produced multiple runs in each of the last four frames for an 11-1 win over the Eagles at LakePoint in Emerson. The youthful Excel club contributed to its own demise, however, committing seven errors that accounted for seven unearned runs in the contest. St. Francis (8-4 overall, 5-2 Region 6-A) scored four runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and added three more in the top of the seventh. ECA scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth when Darius Thrower grounded out to drive in Wyatt Karlovich who had singled to open the inning. Marco Haro also had a hit in the inning and Levi Blackwell reached after getting hit by a pitch. Joseph Cuomo, Thrower, and Karlovich finished with two hits each for the Eagles. Blackwell (5 IP, 6R, 3ER, 5H, 2BB, 3K) was charged with the pitching loss. Haro (2 IP, 5R, 1ER, 5H, 0BB, 1K) finished the game in relief. Matthew Fezza (5 IP, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 3K) picked up the pitching win for the Knights. Ryan Field had two hits and one RBI. Clark Adams drove in two runs with one hit for St. Francis. Excel Christian Academy (1-7, 0-7) has home games with Fellowship Christian Thursday (March 17, 5:30pm) and King’s Ridge Christian Monday (March 21, 5:30pm).
- Tennis Colonels defeat Sequoyah, Lady Colonels fall
The Cass tennis teams split sub-region 7-AAAAA-A matches with visiting Sequoyah Tuesday afternoon at Hamilton Crossing Park. - Lady Colonels shut out visiting Pickens; Lady Cats edged by River Ridge
The Cass Lady Colonels’ soccer team shutout Pickens County 4-0 Tuesday night in a home, non-region match at Doug Cochran Stadium. Stephanie Robledo gave Cass a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute, scoring off an assist from Hannah Johnson. Logan Vermaas found the back of the net for the Lady Colonels in the 32nd minute, following another Johnson helper. Kelsey Rivera put Cass up 3-0 in the 37th minute off an assist from Robledo, and Rivera added a second goal for the night in the 44th minute off a pass from Vermaas. The Lady Colonels (3-6-1) entertain region rival Creekview Friday (March 18). Kickoff is set for 6pm. RIVER RIDGE 3, WOODLAND LADY CATS 2 The Woodland Lady Cats lost a region match at home Tuesday to River Ridge, 3-2. Although both teams had scoring opportunities in the first half, neither took advantage until the 34th minute when the visiting Lady Knights picked up the game’s first goal and took a 1-0 lead to the intermission. Woodland missed a penalty kick early in the second half and then River Ridge took advantage of a mishandled ball in front of the Lady Cats’ net. The mistake led to a Knights’ goal in the 52nd minute and allowed River Ridge to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Knights extended their lead to 3-0 just 30 second later, but Woodland responded well the rest of the way only to come up a goal short. Keri Cagle scored in the 71st minute on a breakaway and Ally Moates found the net in the 79th minute to narrow the margin to 3-2, but that is as close as the Lady Cats would come. River Ridge (5-4 overall, 2-1 in 7-AAAAA-A) was able to withstand the rally down the stretch and ran out the clock for a one goal victory. With the loss, the Lady Cats fall to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in sub-region 7-AAAAA-A. Woodland hosts Sequoyah Friday (March 18) in a 5:30pm kickoff.
- Tigers tennis shuts out LFO
The Adairsville boys tennis team defeated Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe Tuesday afternoon 5-0 to improve to 2-1 in Region 6-AAA play. The Tigers’ Houston Medlock defeated Jeffery Elam 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 1 singles line. Chase Powell of Adairsville won his No. 2 line singles match over Robert Billegas 6-1, 6-0; and Jack Bates defeated LFO's Cody Crawford on the No. 3 line, 6-1, 6-0. The Adairsville duo of Dylan Coker and Austin Cobb defeated LFO’s Matthew Wright and Maguire Shaw, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Adairsville’s No. 2 doubles team of Cody Kimbrough and Landon Swanson won by forfeit. The Tigers play at Coahulla Creek on Thursday.
- Weeks helps lead Reinhardt to 21-8 start; local collegiate softball update
Taylor Weeks, a former Adairsville Lady Tigers' standout and junior at Reinhardt University, headlines this week's top performances among local softball athletes competing at the collegiate level across the country. Weeks, who started who collegiate career at University of Pikeville (KY) before transferring to Reinhardt, is now hitting .422 for the season with 20 RBI for the Eagles. Softball update for the week ending March 13 TAYLOR BRASELTON — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . had five hits that included a double, five runs scored, and three RBI in a stretch of 10 game appearances March 8-11 at the Myrtle Beach Snowbird Invitational. The Lady Eagles won nine of those games, improving to 21-8. Braselton is hitting .292 for the season in 65 at bats over 18 games played. Reinhardt travels to Milligan College for a doubleheader March 16 and entertains conference foe, Bluefield College, for a doubleheader March 19. SYDNEY FLOWERS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . an Eagles’ third baseman, appeared in five games March 8-11 scoring one run and drawing a pair of walks. RU won nine of ten last week in Myrtle Beach, SC at the Snowbird Invitational and improved their record to 21-8. Reinhardt hosts conference foe, Bluefield College, for a doubleheader March 19. LACEY FRITZ — Southeastern Louisiana University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . had a pinch hitting appearance in a 6-5 loss to Abilene Christian March 13 and remained in the batting order as the designated player for a pair of plate appearances. The Lions (12-12) were swept in their first conference three-game series by Abilene Christian March 12-13. SLU hosts Southeast Missouri State March 16 and travels to San Antonio, TX for a three-game Southland Conference series March 18-19 at University of the Incarnate. SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Fr., Woodland HS) . . . the Panthers’ catcher coaxed a walk in three plate appearances during a 16-9 home loss to Berry College March 9. In nine games and 27 plate appearances, Hordorff has a .350 batting average with two runs scored, a homer, and two RBI. Her on base percentage is .519. LaGrange College (5-6 overall, 1-3 in USA South Athletic Conference) entertains Wesleyan (Ga.) College in a doubleheader March 16 and hosts conference opponents William Peace (NC) University and Meredith (NC) College March 19-20. She had two hits and one RBI in a conference doubleheader split March 12 at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Jackson has two homeruns and 14 RBI with a .198 batting average in 31 games. ASHLEY JORDAN — Georgia Highlands CC (Soph, Woodland HS) . . . the Chargers’ outfielder was 3-for-6 and scored twice in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Southern Union (AL) CC March 9. She then went 2-for-6 with one RBI and a sacrifice in a conference doubleheader sweep at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College March 12. Jordan has a .333 batting average in 113 plate appearances over 36 games this season. She has 13 RBI, scored 15 runs, and has eight stolen bases. Rain has a .333 batting average in 69 at bats through 23 games. She has five RBI and eight stolen bases on the season. TAYLOR WEEKS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Adairsville HS) . . . has a .422 batting average through 29 games and 90 at bats. She has four extra base hits and 20 RBI. Weeks has an on base percentage of .485 and has three stolen bases. During a 10-game stretch March 8-11, she was 18-for 32 at the plate with nine RBI and 10 runs scored.
