- Tiger Dugout Club hosting alumni game March 26
The Adairsville High School baseball team and the Tiger Dugout Club will be hosting the 2nd annual AHS Baseball Alumni Game on Saturday, March 26. “We are looking to create a program that our alumni will be proud of, competitive, and connected to our alumni base,” said Tigers’ head coach Billy Roper. The event will begin with pre-game registration at 12 noon with a home run derby to follow at 12:30pm. Teams will be introduced at 1:30pm and the alumni game will follow at 2pm. “We want all our former players and alumni to participate,” said Roper. “There’s just something about reliving those glory days by lacing up those cleats one more time.” “We also want people to come see the new improvements with the facilities and just find out what our baseball program has to offer for families, friends, and alumni,” Roper added. For planning purposes, participants are encouraged to register by Friday, March 18. - Chargers win three of four over weekend
Georgia Highlands College baseball won three of four games over the weekend. The Chargers defeated Cuyahoga (OH) CC Friday and won a pair of games against Guilford (NC) Technical College. Brandon Bell racked up five RBI on three hits to lead the Chargers' offense in their 10-2 win over Cuyahoga (OH) CC. Daniel Gooden, Devin Billardello, Andrew Cooley, and Mitch Burger all had two hits each. Bell and Gooden both homered. Tanner Thomson picked up the pitching victory against Cuyahoga. He scattered three hits and allowed only one earned run in four innings. He walked two and struck out five. Tristan Roberts (3.2 IP, 3H, 1ER, 2BB, 6K), Blake Metvier (0.1 IP), and Bradley Hood (1 IP) also pitched. In a Saturday doubleheader, Highlands split the pair of games with Guilford (NC) Tech. GHC own 6-1 in the opener, but lost the second game, 8-6. In the 6-1 win, Bilardello had two hits for the Chargers and drove in a run. Roberts added a pair of RBI on a hit. Jonathan White, Zach McCrum, Brandon Etheridge, and Bell added hits. Bryan Quillens (5.2 IP, 7H, 1ER, 4BB, 5K) was the winning pitcher for Georgia Highlands. Colby Taylor (0.1 IP, 1BB) and Blake Metivier (1 IP) pitched in relief. In the 8-6 loss, GTC scored all eight runs in the top of the fifth. GHC took a 4-0 lead in the fourth and narrowed the deficit to two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. McCrum had two hits (a double and a homerun), scored two runs, and drove home two more for the Chargers. Etheridge, Burger, Bilardello, and Jake Swan had the other GHC hits. Burger and Swan had RBIs. The Chargers won the rubber game of the Guilford series Sunday, 9-1. Georgia Highlands scored nine unanswered runs in the first six innings and the Chargers’ used seven pitchers to scattered nine hits and allow only a single run. White had three hits and two RBI for the Chargers. Gooden (3RBI) and Bilardello (RBI) had two hits each. Etheridge, McCrum, Andrew Cooley, and Nick Fink had the other GHC hits. Sam Sowerbrower (4 IP, 2H, 1BB, 3K) was credited with the pitching victory in the weekend’s finale. Chandler Newton, Trey Lang, Chris Morton, Dalton Isley, Will Griffin, and Taylor all pitched. The Chargers are now 13-9 and host Wallace State-Hanceville Tuesday at 3pm at LakePoint for a doubleheader.
- GHC softball drops DH to East Georgia; Womack has four-hit day
The Georgia Highlands softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday to GCAA conference foe, East Georgia State CC. East Georgia won by scores of 5-3 and 8-2. Former Cass standout, Lauren Womack was 2-for-3 in Game 1 for the Chargers and drove in one run. Brianna Fickes and Caitlin Parks also had two hits each. Former Woodland standouts, Mallory Jackson and Ashley Jordan, along with Andria Booth had the other hits for GHC in the opener. In Game 2, the Chargers led 2-0 early, but East Georgia scored three in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh to come-from-behind in the late innings. Reign Wilcher had three hits and four RBI to lead East Georgia. Myranda Hand also had a three hit performance with a pair of RBI. Womack was 2-for-3 again for Georgia Highlands. Brianna Fickes also had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Madison Gianfala, Carlee Thurmond, Booth, and Parks had the other GHC hits. Georgia Highlands (11-21 overall, 1-3 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) will host Southern Union State CC Wednesday. The Chargers return to conference play next Saturday (Mar 12) at Abraham Baldwin CC.
- Five run third inning dooms Tigers
A five run third inning by the visiting North Cobb Warriors proved to be too much for the Adairsville Tigers to overcome Saturday in an 8-4 loss. North Cobb took a 6-0 lead in the third inning. The Tigers were able to narrow the lead to 7-4 in the sixth, but got no closer. The Tigers managed only five hits in the contest. Landon Howren and Drake Arp had two hits. Lane Griffith contributed an RBI single. Adairsville (2-1) plays Kennesaw Mountain at LakePoint Tuesday.

- Excel baseball falls to North Cobb Christian
Excel Christian Academy’s baseball club came up on the short end of a 5-1 decision Saturday evening at LakePoint, falling to North Cobb Christian. One night after picking up their first win of the year with an 11-run outburst, the Eagles’ bats were held relatively silent. Excel hitters managed only three hits in the loss. North Cobb Christian scored twice in the top of the first, then added single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Excel scored its only run in the sixth. The Eagles loaded the bases on a single and two walks before Darius Thrower scored on a passed ball. Trace Still, Jordan Wilkie, and Michael Duncan had the Eagles’ hits. Joseph Cuomo (4 IP, 2H, 3R, 1ER, 2BB, 1K), Wyatt Karlovich (2 IP, 3H, 2ER, 0BB, 2K), and Marco Haro (1 IP, 1H, 0BB) pitched for ECA. “Our pitchers did well again,” stated Excel head coach Mike Cuomo. “We made a few miscues in the field and we have to put the ball in play more often at the plate, but we will keep working hard.” Excel (1-4) plays at Mount Paran Christian Monday (Mar 7) at 4:30pm.
- Track and Field: Adairsville, Cartersville, and Cass teams compete in SE Whitfield Invitational
The track and field teams at Adairsville, Cartersville, and Cass participated Saturday in the Southeast Whitfield Invitational in Dalton. Calhoun won the girls event with 97.50 points. Heritage-Catoosa won the boys meet with 109.50 points. Twelve girls teams and twelve boys teams competed. The Cass girls placed fifth. Cartersville girls finished ninth and Adairsville girls were 11th. The Cass boys team finished third. Cartersville boys were eighth and Adairsville boys were 12th. - BCRD 10U girls finish 2016 GRPA state runner-up
The Bartow Blue 10-and-under girls recreation all-star basketball team made it to the championship game of the 2016 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association basketball tournament, but succumbed to a strong DeKalb County team in the finals, 35-13. Bartow had two wins in the state tournament and finishes as 2016 state runner-up. The tournament was hosted in Brookhaven at Lynwood Park. In the title game, Alexis Woods led Bartow with four points. Nxaria Roberts and Mikaela Jackson scored three points each. Julia Shinholster finished with two points. Bartow defeated Savannah in the state semifinals, 35-12. Jackson led the team in scoring with 10 points. Campbell Rogers scored six. Roberts, Woods, and Shinholster scored four points each. Kaylyn Mullinax, Zoe Casey, and Lea Brasington each scored two points. In the opening round, Bartow dispatched Henry County, 25-17. Jackson and Rogers led Bartow with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Shinholster, Woods, Roberts, and Casey each added two points in the victory.
- Canes shutout Coosa, 7-0
In a game that was scoreless for the first four innings, the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes struck for three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning to take control and defeat the Coosa Eagles, 7-0, at State Mutual Stadium in Rome Saturday. The Canes took the lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on a pair of doubles by Trevor Lowe and Anthony Seigler. Parker Tidwell added an RBI single in the frame. Jacob Fowler singled home a run in the sixth inning and Seigler added a two-run triple as Cartersville took a 6-0 lead. In the seventh, the Canes added an insurance run. Elliott Anderson singled and moved to second on an infield error. John Reed Evans entered as a courtesy runner for Anderson and was driven home on a single by Noah Daniel. Zach Yancey had a strong three inning outing on the mound for the Canes. Yancey allowed just one hit, no earned runs, walked one, and struck out one. Mason Barnett was the winning pitcher for Cartersville. Barnett worked two shutout innings. He struck out three, walked one, and allowed one hit. Fowler (1 IP, 2K), Chet Taylor (0.2 IP, 1BB, 1K), and Harrison Osborne (0.1 IP, 1K) also made pitching appearances for the Hurricanes. Seigler led the Canes’ offense with a pair of extra base hits, a run scored, and three RBI. Anderson had two hits. Cartersville (1-3) is scheduled to face Montevarde Academy (FL) Thursday, March 10 at LakePoint. First pitch is set for 3:45pm.

Cade Archer (Cartersville), Kobie Whitfield (Cartersville), Darius Thrower (Excel), Caleb West (Excel), Mike Sims (Cass), and Jonathan Pritchett (Woodland) will be on Tobin’s roster.
- BCRD 10U girls reach GRPA state semifinals
The Bartow Blue 10-and-under girls recreation all-star basketball team opened the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state tournament Friday night with a 25-17 victory over Henry County. The tournament is being hosted in Brookhaven at Lynwood Park. Mikaela Jackson and Campbell Rogers led Bartow with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Julia Shinholster, Alexis Woods, Nxaria Roberts, and Zoe Casey each added two points in the victory. The win advanced Bartow to the semifinals to be played Saturday at 12:45pm. Bartow will face the winner of a Saturday morning quarterfinal game between Savannah and Fulton County. The state championship game is scheduled for 4:15pm on Saturday.
- Cartersville soccer teams defeat Sprayberry
Marissa Mowry scored three goals and had one assist in a 4-1 Cartersville girls soccer win Friday over Sprayberry. Mowry scored in the 18th, 26th, and 60th minutes, then assisted Courtney Rhea’s goal in the 78th minute. Lady Canes’ goalkeeper, Abby Robinson, had 12 saves in the victory. Cartersville (4-1) face Southeast Whitfield Tuesday. The Cartersville boys soccer team defeated Sprayberry Friday night, 3-1. The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the opening five minutes, but Cartersville bounced back with three unanswered goals. Grant Farmer scored in the game’s 15th minute off an assist by Rhett Pasley, then the Canes went ahead on a goal by Cesar Abeja off a corner kick from Osbaldo Cinderos in the 27th minute. Cartersville’s Pedro Robledo scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute to round out the scoring. Marvin Osario picked up the win in goal stopping 15 shots. The Canes are now 5-1 and face Southeast Whitfield on Tuesday.
