- Chargers sweep doubleheader with Southern Union
Brandon Etheridge tripled home the winning run with one out in the seventh as the Georgia Highlands Chargers completed a doubleheader sweep of Southern Union CC Wednesday night at the LakePoint baseball complex in Emerson. Highlands won the nightcap 7-6 and captured the first game 6-3. GHC pitcher, Colby Taylor, picked up the pitching victory after working a shutout inning and one-third. Taylor struck out three and yielded only one hit. Casey Collins struck out eight and allowed three earned runs on three hits and three walks in the opening four and two-thirds. Chris Morton also made a pitching appearance. Etheridge finished the second game with a pair of hits and scored a run. Jonathan White also had a pair of hits for the Chargers. Nick Fink drove in two runs with a fourth inning single. In the first game of the doubleheader, the Chargers and Southern Union swapped the lead five times before Georgia Highlands took control in the bottom of the fifth on a grand slam homerun by Daniel Gooden. Georgia Highlands held on down the stretch to win 6-3. Tristan Roberts was credited with the Chargers’ pitching victory. He allowed a pair of runs in an inning and two-thirds. Nick Constan worked four innings, allowing no earned runs on three hits. Bradley Hood recorded the third out in the sixth for GHC and Will Griffin worked a scoreless frame. Gooden, Mitch Burger, and Brandon Bell finished with two hits each. Gooden had four RBI with the slam. Bell and Devin Bilardello added one RBI each. The Chargers (10-5) host a three game series with Sinclair State (OH) Friday and Saturday. The Friday game is set for 6pm. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1pm.
- Wildcats fall to Kennesaw Mountain
Kennesaw Mountain senior pitcher, Daniel Dolensky, tossed a four inning no-hitter Wednesday night and struck out six to take down the Woodland Wildcats at the LakePoint baseball complex in Emerson. Kennesaw Mountain scored four runs in the second, nine in the third, and two more in the fourth to end the non-region contest, 15-0. The Mustangs recorded 13 hits in their win including seven extra-base hits. Ivan Johnson hit a homerun in the third. Woodland falls to 1-1 with the loss. Kennesaw Mountain improved to 3-0. The Wildcats are scheduled to play LaGrange Friday (Feb. 26, 5:55pm) at Reinhardt University in Waleska and will travel to River Ridge Monday (Feb. 29, 5:55pm) to open a three game sub-region series with the Knights.
- Lady Colonels soccer shuts out Temple
The Cass Lady Colonels' soccer team defeated Temple 10-0 Wednesday night in a home, non-region match. Cass goals were scored by Kyla Michienzi (2), Stephanie Robledo (2) Sidney Vermaas, Macy Wright, Kelsey Rivera, Hannah Johnson, Lupita Pineda, and Logan Vermaas. Assists on goals were recorded by Robledo (3), Sidney Vermaas, Michienzi, Pineda, Brittney Ochoa, Johnson, and Breanna Ochoa. Cass (2-1-1) plays at Cartersville Friday and hosts Dalton Tuesday, March 1. Both games are scheduled for 5:30pm.
- Adairsville boys soccer defeats Armuchee
The Adairsville boys soccer team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 2-1 victory over Armuchee Tuesday night. Danny Carillo scored both goals for the Tigers -- one on a penalty kick and the other on a great shot from 15 yards out. Adairsville goalkeeper, B.J. Hardman, had an outstanding game in net. He made eight saves on a rainy night. Tigers coach, Kelly Abernathy, is excited about the improvement of the team. Adairsville is scheduled to host Trion Thursday (Feb. 25) and Darlington Feb. 29.
- Bartow 10U girls capture GRPA District 5 basketball title
The Bartow County 10U girls all-star basketball team won the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association’s District Five championship Tuesday night (Feb. 23) by defeating Rome #2 in the championship game, 29-7. Campbell Rogers was the game’s leading scorer with 12 points for Bartow. Mikaela Jackson scored nine points for the locals, followed by two each from Zoe Casey, Naxyria Roberts, Julia Shinholster, and Alexis Woods. Bartow advances to the state tournament to be held in Brookhaven. The opening game for the new District 5 champs will be Friday, March 4 at 8:45pm against the winner of District 4. The 10U Bartow Blue All-Stars defeated South Cobb #2 40-10 Tuesday night in the District 5 semifinals. Bartow Blue was led by Ramarion Pace with 13 points. Jakaden Barkley, Nic Kennedy, and Mason Pharis scored four each for Bartow, followed by three each by Zantivian Brown and Jaylen Scott. Jayden Foster added two points. 10U Bartow Blue plays South Cobb #1 for the District 5 championship Thursday, Feb. 25 in the Houston Suggs Gym at Hamilton Crossing Park. Tip is scheduled for 7pm. The Bartow 8U boys lost in the championship game of District 5 Tuesday night. South Cobb captured the district title, 39-5. Ja’Kai Baldwin scored four points for Bartow and Jarrett Scott added one. Bartow County will be hosting the 8U girls and boys state tournaments beginning Friday, March 4. Bartow 8U girls and Whitfield County 8U girls will represent District 5 in the state tournament. South Cobb 8U boys and Bartow Blue 8U will represent District 5 in the state tournament.
- Lady Tigers improve to 3-0
The Adairsville Lady Tigers soccer team improved to 3-0 Tuesday night with an 8-1 home victory over Armuchee. Haley Pittman scored four goals, while gillian Johnson and Kaitlyn Webster added two each for Adairsville. Victoria Davis, Amy Pacheco, Katie Lawhorn (2), and Pittman all added assists. Havyn Isaac earned the win in goal for the Lady Tigers. Armuchee’s lone goal came deep in the second half after Adairsville had taken a 7-0 lead. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to host Trion Thursday and Darlington Feb. 29.
- Lady Colonels battle to 1-1 draw at Northwest Whitfield
The Cass Lady Colonels soccer team played Northwest Whitfield to a 1-1 tie Tuesday night in Tunnel Hill. Sidney Vermaas scored the Lady Colonels’ goal off an assist from Stephanie Robledo. The tie brings the Lady Bruins season mark to 1-2-1. Cass is now 1-1-1 and is scheduled to host Temple Wednesday night at 7:30pm. The Lady Colonels play at Cartersville Friday at 5:30pm.
- BCRD 8U youth basketball boys, 10U girls play for district titles Tuesday; 12U boys advance to semif
Two Bartow County Recreation Department youth basketball teams have advanced to GRPA District 5 championship games Tuesday night and a third team will play in a semifinal game. The Bartow 8U Blue team and the Bartow 10U girls have reached their tournament finals. The 12U Bartow Blue team has reached the semifinals of their tournament. 8U BOYS 8U Bartow County Blue defeated Whitfield County Monday night at Manning Mill Park, 28-24. Tyrek Hames led Bartow with 12 points. Jarrett Scott scored seven, followed by Jakez Baldwin with five. Casen Cochran and Isaiah Livsey added two points each for Bartow. Bartow Blue plays South Cobb Tuesday at 7pm in the finals. Cobb defeated Dalton in the semifinals Monday night. 10U GIRLS 10U Bartow girls def. Rome #1, 36-27 Monday night at the Whitfield Co. Recreation Department Gym. Mikaela Jackson scored 10 points for Bartow County. She was followed in scoring by Campbell Rogers eight, Naxyria Roberts seven, Julia Shinholster six, Lea Brasington two, Kailynn Mullinax two, and Brigid Njoroge one point. In the other semifinal, Rome #2 beat Dalton, 23-8, also Monday night. The District 5 finals are Tuesday night, 6:15pm, at Whitfield Co. Recreation Department. 10U BOYS 10U Bartow Blue defeated Rome #1 Monday night, 46-32. Jakaden Barkley was high scorer for Bartow Blue with 13 points. Jaylen Scott scored seven, Nic Kennedy six, Ramarion Pace six, Kymoni Pullum six, Mashon Pharis five, and Jayden Foster three for Bartow. Bartow Blue will play South Cobb #2 in the District 5 semifinals Tuesday night at 6:30pm at the Houston Suggs Youth Center at Hamilton Crossing Park. In other action Monday night: 12U Cartersville boys lost 46-40 to Whitfield County in the District 5 semifinals Monday night at New Hope Middle School in Dalton. Whitfield plays Tuesday in the finals Tuesday night against Rome #1. Rome routed Powder Springs in the other semifinal Monday, 62-33. - BCRD softball, baseball, spring soccer registration deadlines approaching
The registration deadlines for softball, baseball, and spring soccer with the Bartow County Recreation Department are quickly approaching. The deadline for all three sports, and all age divisions is Monday, February 29. BCRD is offering soccer for ages 4 - 12, softball for girls age 4 - 17, and baseball for ages 4 - 18. SOFTBALL BETHANY BALLARD — Armstrong State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . catcher, has appeared in six games for the Pirates and has a double (.200) with a pair of RBI. ASU is 11-5 on the season and will play four games (vs. Bellarmine, Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne, and Queens College) in the Mid-South Classic Feb. 27-28 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. TAYLOR BRASELTON — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . As a leadoff hitting centerfielder, Braselton is 8-for-27 (.296) in eight games for the Eagles (5-3) with one RBI and a pair of walks. She has seven putouts and a pair of assists defensively. Reinhardt lost three of four games last weekend in Montgomery, AL, but defeated ninth-ranked William Carey, 3-1. BO EDWARDS — University North Georgia (R-Sr., Adairsville HS) . . . has two starts and has appeared in four games for the Nighthawks who are 9-2 to start the year. Edwards went 1-for-4 with a double and RBI vs. Georgia Southwestern Feb. 20 and is 2-for-11 (.182) for the season. North Georgia opened Peach Belt Conference play last weekend winning two of three games at Georgia Southwestern University. UNG travels to Southern Wesleyan University Feb. 24 before hosting PBC foe Columbus State University Feb. 26-28 in Dahlonega. BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Georgia Highlands CC (Soph., Cass HS) . . . the Chargers’ outfielder is 12-for-43 (.279) with a three RBI and seven runs scored in 12 games. Etheridge also has two stolen bases. He was 3-for-10, scoring twice, with one RBI in three games this past weekend vs. St. Louis CC (MO) and Lincoln Trail CC (IL). GHC is 8-5 and scheduled to host Southern Union State CC Feb. 24 before a three-game series with Sinclair CC (OH) Feb. 26-27 at LakePoint. TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . has one pitching appearance vs. Indiana University Southeast where he entered in the final innings to close out a 13-4 win. Fowler faced four batters and recorded three strikeouts. One batter reached on an error. The 14th-ranked Bulldogs are 4-4, winning three in a four-game series at home last weekend vs. Indiana University Southeast. MICHAEL GOSS — University of North Carolina-Greensboro (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . went 6-for-13 (.462 BA; .769 SLG%) with a homerun, double, four runs scored, three walks, and five RBI in the Spartans season opening home-and-home series with High Point University. UNCG (2-1) won 9-3 and 13-5 in the first two games, but fell 15-5 in the third game of the series. Goss, a defensive starter at first base, recorded 23 putouts and a pair of assists in 27 chances during the opening series. UNC-Greensboro hosts Elon Feb. 23 and a three-game series with Binghamton Feb. 26-28. ROBERT HARRIS — Troy University (Jr., Adairsville HS) . . . made a two inning appearance during a 10-3 Trojans win over Northern Kentucky Feb. 19. Harris struck out four. Troy swept the four game series to open their 2016 campaign. The Trojans host Alabama-Birmingham Feb. 24 and play a three game series at Southeastern Louisiana Feb. 26-28. HARRISON HATFIELD — Shorter University (Soph, Cartersville HS) . . . has two plate appearances in three games played for the Hawks who are currently 7-5 after dropping two of three at Union University over the past weekend. Shorter is scheduled to host University of North Alabama in a three-game Gulf South Conference series Feb. 27-28. EVAN HILTON — Georgia College (R-Jr., Woodland HS) . . . the southpaw worked two-thirds of an inning in a 19-3 win over Albany State Feb. 14 yielding an earned run on one hit and three walks. The Bobcats are 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the Peach Belt Conference after losing two of three over the past weekend to Flagler College. Georgia College hosts 24th-ranked University of South Carolina-Aiken in another PBC series Feb. 26-28. BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Cass HS) . . . the right hand pitcher has made three appearances recording three strikeouts in two innings pitched. He has not allowed an earned run. The Chargers are 8-5 and scheduled to host Southern Union State CC Feb. 24 before a three-game series with Sinclair CC (OH) Feb. 26-27 at LakePoint. TRIPP JAMIESON — Univ. of the Cumberlands (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . in five starts and six games played, Jamieson is 6-for-13 (.462 BA; 1.000 SLG%) with a homerun, four extra base hits, two walks, and nine RBI. The Patriots lost to Union College (KY) Feb. 18, but swept a three game set with Ohio State University-Lima over the past weekend to improve to 5-2. U of C continues a 16-game home stand Feb. 27-28 with a four game series against Wright State-Lake (OH). CONNOR JUSTUS — Georgia Tech (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . opened the 2016 campaign by going 7-for-12 (.583) with a double, a walk, two runs scored, and two stolen bases as the Yellow Jackets defeated Purdue, Western Michigan, and Virginia Commonwealth Feb. 19-21. The starting shortstop had four putouts, 11 assists, and was part of five double plays in 15 chances over the three game stretch. Georgia Tech is scheduled to play at Georgia Southern Feb. 24 and then opens a seven game home stand with a three game series vs. University of Maryland-Baltimore County Feb. 26-28. SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Fr., Adairsville HS) . . . starting at 1B or DH and hitting in the clean-up spot, McDermott is 10-for-30 (.333) with two doubles, three walks, and five RBI. CSCC is 5-4 and travels to Piedmont College (GA) for a doubleheader Feb. 22 and plays at Chattanooga State CC Feb. 27. HUNTER OSBORN — Reinhardt University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . the RHP is 2-0 in three starts for the Eagles. He has recorded 13 strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched with a 1.23 ERA. He went 5 innings, allowing only one hit and three walks with five strikeouts in a win over St. Francis (IN) Feb. 20. He has also walked five times. The Governors, 10-2 and had a 10-game win streak stopped Feb. 22 with a home loss to Darton State (GA). JO JO UNDERWOOD — University of North Carolina-Greensboro (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . made two appearances for the Spartans in their opening weekend series vs. High Point University. He had one plate appearance and recorded four putouts at catcher. UNC-Greensboro (2-1) hosts Elon Feb. 23 and a three-game series with Binghamton Feb. 26-28. TYLER WILL — Berry College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . the RHP has appeared in three games, allowing five hits in 2.1 innings pitched while recording a save against Guilford College Feb. 13. The Vikings are 10-0 following a sweep of Fontbonne University (MO) this past weekend. Berry hosts Covenant College Feb. 24 and travels to Sewanee (TN) for a three game series Feb. 27-28. ASA WILLIAMS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Cartersville HS) . . . the Eagles’ catcher is 7-for-23 (.304 BA) in seven starts with two doubles, a walk, and six RBI. CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . has pitched 5.2 innings in a pair of relief appearances for the Cougars. Wilson has four strikeouts, four walks, and has allowed no earned runs with a .188 batting average against. CSU swept Young Harris College this past weekend with Wilson pitching the seventh and eighth innings of Game 2. Columbus State improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the Peach Belt Conference. - Local 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' update: Rosario earns bid to NAIA national tourney

Former Cass wrestler and current Cumberland University junior, Sammy Rosario, made the finals of the Mid-South Conference tournament in the 133-pound weight class last weekend. The tournament doubled as an NAIA regional and qualified Rosario for the national tournament in Topeka, Kansas March 4-5 at the Kansas Expocentre. WRESTLING EVAN COLE — Cumberland University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . lost both matches at the NAIA East Qualifier wrestling in the 149-pound weight class, but his team captured its first-ever Mid-South Conference title. Cole’s 2015-16 season mark finished at 11-15. SAMMY ROSARIO — Cumberland University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . pinned Brewton-Parker’s Omar Ruiz at 4:11 in his first bout at 133 pounds at the NAIA East Qualifier at Life University in Marietta, GA. Rosario (16-7) received an injury forfeit from Life University’s 13th-ranked Stephen Ireland to reach the finals where he lost a 3-2 decision to Campbellsville’s second-ranked Davion Caston. Cumberland had seven total automatic qualifiers, including Rosario, for the NAIA national tournament March 4-5 in Topeka, Kansas. - Cartersville 12U boys all stars advance at GRPA district hoops tourney
The City of Cartersville Recreation Department 12U boys all-star team won their opening game in the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association Distict 5 tournament this past weekend to advance to a Monday night (Feb. 22, 7:45pm) semifinal game against Whitfield County at New Hope Middle School in Dalton. The 12U Cartersville boys defeated South Cobb, 38-15. The team roster includes: Calloway Goss, Jimbo Gaines, Luke Gambill, A.J. Christina, Kalil Holley, Jayvion Jackson, Ben Williams, Jake Lawson, Jackson Heilman, Robert Novak. Coaches: Dan Heilman, Clark Weidetz.
