  • Canes fall to Golden Lions in opening round

    ST. PIUS X BOYS 63, CARTERSVILLE 46 After winning the Region 7-AAAA championship last weekend, the Cartersville boys basketball team saw their season come to an end Wednesday night at the Storm Center with an opening round state tournament loss to St. Pius X, 63-46. The Canes’ Cortney Cooley hit a three point field goal to close out the first quarter and bring Cartersville even with the visiting Golden Lions after eight minutes, 16-16. St. Pius, the fourth-seed from Region 6-AAAA, used full court pressure and a hounding defense along with good ball movement and quality shooting to outscore the Canes 17-7 in the second quarter. Carson Seramur and Kerney Lane made back-to-back three-pointers that put SPX up 26-18 midway through the second quarter. Later, a basket by Chandler Parks extended the Golden Lions lead to 30-20. Jaylon Pugh sank a free throw for Cartersville to cut the St. Pius lead to seven, but Seramur hit another three-pointer to give the Lions a 33-23 advantage at the intermission on 50 percent shooting for the half. The Canes were limited to 26 percent shooting in the first sixteen minutes. The Golden Lions pushed their lead to 38-27 midway through the third quarter. The Canes’ Trase Fezzia knocked down a three-pointer near the end of the period to cut the St. Pius lead to 40-33, but another Seramur three-pointer gave the Lions an eleven point lead after three quarters, 44-33. Senior Cade Archer nailed a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter scoring for Cartersville, but St. Pius responded with ten unanswered points to extend their lead to 54-36 with just under four minutes remaining and the Lions cruised to victory from there. Pugh led Cartersville with 11 points and seven rebounds. Seramur and Lane led the Golden Lions with 20 and 17 points, respectively. Merrill scored nine. St. Pius X improved to 23-6 and advanced to play a second round state tournament game at the Perry/Thomson winner Saturday night. The Canes’ season comes to a close with a 21-7 record.   • Lady Tigers' tourney run ends at West Hall

    The Adairsville Lady Tigers’ season came to a close Tuesday night in Oakwood with a 73-48 loss to the Region 7-AAA champion West Hall Lady Spartans in the first round of the Class AAA state tournament. The loss brings a "Cinderella story" post-season, tournament run to an end for Coach Lee Whitaker's Lady Tigers who qualified for the state tournament for the first time since 1958. West Hall (20-8) advances to the Round of 16 Friday where they will host Washington County — a 65-46 winner Tuesday night over Jackson. Adairsville concludes the 2015-16 campaign with a 13-17 record. Other 7-AAA girls results Tuesday night: Ringgold 69, East Hall 50 (Ringgold advances to play at Peach County Fri., Feb. 19) Sonoraville 66, Banks County 46 (Sonoraville will host Kendrick Fri., Feb. 19) Dawson Co. 71, Calhoun 54 (Calhoun eliminated)

SOFTBALL BETHANY BALLARD — Armstrong State University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . catcher, has appeared in four of 12 games for the Pirates and has one hit (.333) with a pair of RBI. ASU is 8-4 on the season and will host Mount Olive (NC) and Queens (NC) for a pair of games each Feb. 20-21. TAYLOR BRASELTON — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) . . . As a leadoff hitting centerfielder, Braselton is 5-for-13 (.385) in four games for the Eagles with one RBI and a pair of walks. She has six putouts and an assist defensively. BASEBALL CLIFTON DEMPSEY — Maryville College (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . has 7 plate appearances and has appeared in six games for the Scots including one start at second base. Dempsey has a pair of hits (.333 BA) that include a double and a run batted in. Maryville has started the season 5-2 and hosts MacMurray College in a three-game series Feb. 20-21. BO EDWARDS — University North Georgia (R-Sr., Adairsville HS) . . . has one start and has appeared in three games for the Nighthawks who are 6-2 to start the year.   • Chargers swept at home

    Georgia Highlands slipped to 5-4 on the year after being swept in a three-game series this past weekend by visiting Walters State (TN). The Patriots won 11-7 Friday night and then took a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 7-5 and 5-3. Walters State improved to 6-3 on the season. In Saturday’s first game, the Chargers jumped on top, 3-1, but the visiting Senators put up single runs in the third through fifth frames to regain the lead. Highlands tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, but Walters State scored twice in the sixth and added another run in the seventh for a 7-5 decision. Brandon Bell had three hits for GHC. Zach McCrum drove in three runs on a pair of hits (a double and a HR) and Brandon Etheridge had two hits for the Chargers. In Saturday’s second game, the Chargers took a 3-2 lead to the top of the seventh inning before the Senators put up three runs in the final frame to win 5-3. Brandon Bell hit a solo shot in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth to account for all three Georgia Highlands’ RBI. The Chargers host Cleveland State (TN) Wednesday at 3pm at LakePoint and will host Lincoln Trail CC and St. Louis CC Saturday, at 1pm and 3:30pm. GHC will close out a two-game set with St. Louis CC Sunday at LakePoint with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon.

In the Vikings final meet, Siniard swam the second leg for the first place 800 yard freestyle relay team Feb. 10-13 at the Southern Athletic Association conference championships in Birmingham. The Vikings finished second at the event, the best finish ever for the program. Siniard’s relay team was eighth in the 200-yard freestyle relay and ninth in the 200-yard medley relay. He placed 10th in the 200-yard freestyle, 11th in the 100 yard freestyle and 16th in the 500-yard freestyle. ​​ TRACK AND FIELD MILES BEARDEN — Kansas State (Jr., Darlington School; Cartersville resident) . . . was 11th in the high jump (2.11m/6-11) at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., Feb. 13. The Wildcats host the Steve Miller Open Feb. 19 before traveling to the Big 12 Championships Feb. 26-27 in Ames, Iowa. ROGER HERRERA — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . distance runner, ran 30th (17:15.52) in the 5000 meter run at the Samford Invitational Feb. 13. Cartersville HS) . . . averaging 12 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. Irby recorded a double-double in a Feb. 11, 72-60 victory over Lawson State with 14 points and 10 assists. A former Cass Colonel, Rodgers was named South West Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Week Feb. 10 after averaging 28 points in two road games at Grambling State and Jackson State on 56 percent shooting from the field. Southern has won 9 of 10 and is 17-8 overall. Southern is 9-3 in the SWAC, currently second behind Texas Southern. The Jags host Mississippi Valley State Feb. 15 and travel to Alabama State Feb. 20.   • Adairsville girls to open state basketball tourney at West Hall

    CALHOUN GIRLS 71, ADAIRSVILLE 41 Calhoun jumped out to a 25-11 lead after one quarter and extended their lead to 37-20 at halftime on their way to a 30-point win over the Lady Tigers in the Region 6-AAA third/fourth place tournament game. Adairsville (13-16) will open the Class AAA tournament on the road Tuesday. The Sonoraville girls defeated Ringgold for the region championship Saturday night, 51-34. Those two teams will host opening round games in the state tournament that begins Tuesday. In Region 7-AAA, West Hall defeated Dawson Co. 71-53 to win that title. Adairsville, as a 4-seed, will travel to Oakwood on Tuesday to open the state tournament. The first round of the GHSA Class AAA Girls State Tournament pairs Region 6-AAA against Region 7-AAA as follows: Tuesday, Feb. 16 Adairsville at West Hall Calhoun at Dawson Co.   • Woodland's Sims captures third title; Golhoffer, Cochran, and Colonels' Quinn also win state

    Four local high school wrestlers captured individual state championship titles Saturday at the Georgia High School Association's Traditional State Wrestling Championships at Infinite Energy Gwinnett Arena. Woodland's Kyle Golhoffer (106 weight class), Logan Sims (132), and Cody Cochran (152) each won a state title in Class AAAAA Saturday. For Sims, it was his third career individual title. Hunter Quinn (138) of Cass also won a state championship in Class AAAAA. Tripp Breeden (195) of Cass and Woodland heavyweight Nick May lost in the state finals to finish as a state runner-up. Camden County successfully defended its traditional state title with 268.5 points as Woodland finished second with 187.0. Cass was fourth in Class AAAAA team scoring.   • Canes win Region 7-AAAA basketball title

    The Cartersville boys basketball team won the Region 7-AAAA championship Saturday night by defeating Heritage-Catoosa, 46-43. For the Canes, it is their fourth consecutive region title. Trase Fezzia scored 11 points and Jaylon Pugh scored nine points with nine rebounds for Cartersville. The Region 7-AAAA tournament was hosted by Southeast Whitfield High School in Dalton. The Canes improved their season mark to 20-6 and will host St. Pius X in the first round of the Class AAAA state tournament Wednesday, Feb. 17 at the Storm Center. With a first round win, Cartersville will also be eligible to host the second round as a region winner. Heritage-Catoosa will also play at home in a first round state tournament game. The Generals will host Columbia on Wednesday. Northwest Whitfield routed Pickens, 92-59 in the Region 7-AAAA third/fourth place game. Those two teams will play the opening round on the road. Northwest Whitfield travels to Lithonia. Pickens will open the state tournament at Grady.   • Canes soccer opens 2016 season with road win

    The Cartersville boys soccer team opened the 2016 season Friday with a 4-0 win at North Cobb Christian. The Canes took a 1-0 lead to the intermission. The only score of the opening half came in the 29th minute on a cross to Jake Hacker from Cesar Abeja. In the 43rd minute, Pedro Robledo gave the Canes a 2-0 lead after he intercepted a pass at 25 yards out and eventually found the corner of the net. Osbaldo Senderos added Cartersville’s third goal on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute and Blake Cheek added a final goal on an assist from Edwin Betancort in the 66th minute. Cartersville (1-0) hosts Darlington next Wednesday.
