  • Colonels overpowered by Titans in opening round

November 16, 2024 With a formidable defense, the Blessed Trinity Titans capitalized on turnovers and field position to thwart the Cass Colonels 41-7 Friday night in Roswell to secure a first-round victory in the Class 4A state playoffs. Titans’ runningback Ahmontae Pitts rushed for 110 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Brooks Goodman had an 18-yard touchdown pass to Kameron Betts, and placekicker Noah Godhard kicked a pair of 33-yard field goals as Blessed Trinity built a 34-0 lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter. Later in the final period, Caden Dawson picked off a deflected pass and returned it five yards to put the Titans ahead 41-0.  The Colonels managed only three yards of total offense in the first half, and their only score was an Elijah Slocum 4-yard run with 1:28 left in the game. Mason Madrid converted the extra point for Cass.  An interception on the first Cass possession of the night set up Goodman’s touchdown pass to Betts with 10:18 remaining in the first quarter. Cass had one first down on their next possession before the Titans’ Andrew Cochran returned a punt to the Colonels’ 37-yard line. Nine plays later, Pitts burst into the end zone from five yards out for the first of his three scores with 3:49 to go in the quarter. A blocked Cass punt gave Blessed Trinity a start at the Colonels’ 9-yard line for their next score. Pitts punched in a 3-yard run on 3rd-and-goal, and the Titans held a 21-0 lead with 11:55 left in the first half. Both teams punted on their next two possessions, and when the second quarter ended, Cass had the ball at midfield. The second-half kickoff by Cass went out-of-bounds, giving Blessed Trinity the ball at the 35-yard line. Two short runs and a short pass left the Titans with a first down at the 50-yard line. On the drive's fourth play, Pitts got outside the Cass defense and sprinted up the right sideline for a 50-yard touchdown — his third of the night — with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter. Godhard’s PAT kick made the score 28-0. Godhard’s field goals were true, with 5:46 left in the third quarter and 11:14 in the fourth quarter.
