  • Local high school swim teams compete at NW Georgia Championships

    Local high school swim teams competed this past weekend at the Northwest Georgia Championships January 15-16 hosted by Calhoun High School at the Calhoun Aquatic Center. Woodland placed sixth overall, followed by Adairsville ninth, Cass 12th, and Cartersville 14th. Rome won the event, followed by Blessed Trinity, Calhoun, Northwest Whitfield, and Creekview to round out the top five teams overall.   • Lady Cats, Canes win Monday night

    Cartersville and Woodland split a pair of non-region basketball games Monday evening at Woodland High School with the Lady Cats taking the girls' game and the Purple Hurricanes winning the boys’ tilt. WOODLAND GIRLS 39, CARTERSVILLE 33 Gabby Bradley scored 14 points and Madgie Robinson 11 to lead the Lady Wildcats. Madison McKinney led Cartersville with seven points. With the non-region victory, Woodland is now 5-14 overall. Cartersville is now 3-13. Woodland hosts Rome Friday at 6pm and travels to Dalton Saturday for a 3pm tip. Cartersville plays at Northwest Whitfield Tuesday at 6pm, followed by home games with LaFayette Friday at 6pm and Kell on Saturday at 3pm. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 71, WOODLAND 50 The Hurricanes grabbed a 26-17 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 43-25 at the halftime break on their way to a 21-point non-region win at Woodland Monday night. Jaylon Pugh scored 11 points to go with five rebounds, 3 assists, and a pair of steals for Cartersville. Teammate Isaac Gridley scored nine points, pulled seven rebounds, and added an assist. Kobie Whitfield and Cortney Cooley scored eight points each for the Canes. Kobie Whitfield added a pair of boards with an assist and two blocked shots. Cooley dished a pair of assists. Xavior Coaxum, T.J. Horton, and Trase Fezzia added five points each for Cartersville, followed by Cade Archer with five; Tiamon Pennymon four; JKobe Orr and Kameron Whitfield with three; Daunta Bryan two, and Travon Davis one point. Horton added a pair of rebounds with three assists and two steals. Fezzia pulled three rebounds. Pennymon, Kameron Whitfield, and Orr grabbed two rebounds each. Camden Royal and Justice Hayes led the Wildcats with eight points apiece. John Adams and Jaylen Ballard scored six each. Brady Jernigan scored five. Jonathan Pritchett, Trevor Knowles, and Julian Rocket added three points each. Grant Richards, Jaden Pressley, Jarvis James, and Chandler Taylor all scored two points for Woodland. With the victory, Cartersville improved to 12-4 on the season. Woodland is now 3-14 overall. Woodland has a home game with Rome Friday (7:30pm) before traveling to Dalton Saturday for a 4:30pm start. Cartersville plays at Northwest Whitfield Tuesday (7:30pm), followed by home games with LaFayette Friday (7:30pm) and Kell on Saturday (4:30pm).

  • Former Canes' head football coach, Earwood, retiring

    Former Cartersville High School head football coach, Mike Earwood, says he is retiring from coaching after 37 years. Earwood, one of the state's career leaders in football coaching victories, arrived at Cartersville High School in 1986 and led the Purple Hurricanes to five region titles in 7-AA and a Class AA state championship in 1991. Earwood was 216-114-1 as a high school head coach at Our Lady of Mercy (2010-2015), Starr's Mill (1998-2009), Upson-Lee (1996), and Cartersville (1986-1995). TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Cartersville, GA; Laurel Springs Academy) . . . paired up with teammate Toni Ormond to win a doubles match vs. 44th-ranked Purdue 6-3 giving the Lady Cardinals an early team lead in their season opening loss to the Boilermakers, 5-2. Gollhofer also put up a strong showing before losing her singles match. The Cardinals have six-straight home competitions coming up, including the 2016 home opener Friday, Jan. 22 against Butler. TRACK & FIELD MILES BEARDEN — Kansas State University (Jr., Cartersville, GA; Darlington School) . . . As a high jumper, Bearden has two first place finishes during the indoor season, both at home indoor meets. He won the Wildcat Invitational Jan. 9 with a 2.10m / 6’-10.75” jump vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Nebraska-Omaha, and Witchita State. He also won the K-State Winter Invitational Dec. 12 vs. Nebraska-Omaha, Oklahoma State, and Missouri-Kansas City with a personal best jump of 2.18m / 7’-01.75”. The Wildcats finished second behind Kansas in the KSU-KU-WSU Showdown Jan. 15 and will host the Deloss Dodds Invitational Jan. 22-24. BLAKE PERRY — Jacksonville State University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . was 6th in the triple jump and 27th in the 60 meter hurdles Saturday, Jan. 16 at the UAB Blazer Vulcan Invitational. . . competed for the Gamecocks at the Birmingham Southern College Ice Breaker Indoor in December in the 60 meter hurdles. She placed 21st and JSU was 11th as a team. . . JSU travels to the Arkansas State Invitational Jan. 22-23. SAMANTHA PATTERSON — Jacksonville State University (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . pole vaulter placed 6th (10’-11.75”) at the UAB Blazer Vulcan Invitational Saturday, Jan. 16. JSU travels to the Arkansas State Invitational Jan. 22-23. SWIMMING ELISE HART — Air Force Academy (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . helped the Falcons sweep a home, multi-team meet Sat. Jan. 16 as part of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:48:36). Air Force defeated Seattle, South Dakota and Northern Colorado. Hart was also third in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke. She added a seventh place finish with a 400 freestyle relay team. At the Orange Bowl Classic January 3, Hart and her 200 medley relay team placed 5th in 2:03.93. She was 6th in the 50 backstroke and 10th in the 50 free at the event in Key Largo, FL. Next for Air Force is a meet at UNLV January 23. MATTHEW SINIARD — Berry College (Sr., Cartersville HS) . . . won both his events Sat. Jan. 16 as the Vikings took 27 of 29 events and defeated LaGrange College at home. Siniard was first in the men’s 200 free (1:52.13) and first in the men’s 500 free (5:15.62). He was also on the second place free relay team that defeated both LaGrange entries. At the Centre College Invitational Jan. 8-9, Siniard was 7th in the 200 free, 8th in the 50 free, 10th in the 100 free, and part of the 4th place 800 free relay team, part of the 5th place 400 free relay team, and part of a 9th place 200 free relay team and 9th place 400 free relay team. The Vikings were second in the four-team Invitational behind Franklin College. Berry hosts the Viking Invitational Jan. 22-23. WRESTLING GERRY VASSIL — Belmont Abbey College (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . wrestling at 184-pounds, pinned his Greensboro College opponent and lost a 4-2 decision to his Southeastern (FL) opponent as Belmont Abbey won three duals January 8 at the Coker Duals. Also wrestled at 184 in an individual loss, but team 27-24 win over Emmanuel (GA) on January 13. The Crusaders host Anderson and Davidson Tuesday, Jan. 19 and will host King College on Sat. Jan. 23. WOMENS BASKETBALL SYDNEY BOYD — Brewton-Parker College (G, Freshman, Woodland HS) . . . has played in 12 games for the 4-12 Lady Barons with three starts. She is averaging 11 minutes and 5.9 points per game. In her most recent game, Boyd scored nine points with a pair of steals, two assists, and two rebounds Jan. 12 as BPC defeated Selma University 92-82 to snap a nine-game losing streak. The Barons travel to Bethel University and Martin Methodist University in western Tennessee Jan. 16 and Jan. 18. MARISSA DUBOSE — Gadsden State CC (F/C, Sophomore, Woodland HS) . . . has played in 14 games and started once for the 6-9 Cardinal. She is averaging 2.4 rebounds per game and just under one point per game. In her most recent game Jan. 12 against Wallace State-Hanceville, Dubose had 3 assists and one rebound. Her season high in points (7) came December 9 at Chattahoochee Tech. GSCC plays at Lawson State CC Tuesday, Jan. 19 and hosts Snead State CC Mon. Jan. 25. ASHLEY HUSKINS — Univ. of the Cumberlands (G/F, Freshman, Cass HS) . . . has appeared in 13 games with two starts for the Patriots averaging just over 13 minutes per game. Huskins is averaging just over three points and three rebounds per game with six blocks and nine assists. She started Saturday (Jan. 16) in a loss to St. Catharine (KY), scoring six points with four rebounds and a steal. Cumberlands is 7-8 overall and 0-5 in the NAIA’s Mid-South Conference. The Lady Pats have lost four straight, but will look to get back in the win column with consecutive home games against ninth-ranked Shawnee State (Jan. 21), Georgetown College (Jan. 23), and Berea College (Jan. 28). KAELYN IRBY — Gadsden State CC (G, Sophomore, Cartersville HS) . . . has started all 15 games for the Cardinal and is averaging better than 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists per game. She scored nine points with two rebounds, three assists, and two steals in a Jan. 12 79-67 victory over Wallace State-Hanceville CC. MAYA JONES — Gadsden State CC (F, Sophomore, Cartersville HS) . . . has appeared in a dozen games for GSCC averaging 0.8 points and 0.7 rebounds per game. CTCC is now 17-1 overall, 4-0 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association and ranked No. 14 in the NJCAA Division I. The Golden Eagles travel to Rome Monday, Jan. 18 to battle No. 2 nationally ranked Georgia Highlands at 7:30pm. MOSBY — Chattahoochee Tech CC (G, Sophomore, Cartersville HS) . . . a starter in all 18 games, Mosby is averaging just over 19 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists while logging more than 30 minutes per game. In the Golden Eagles’ most recent game, Thursday, Jan. 14, Mosby scored a game-high 36 points on 12-of-18 shooting as CTCC defeated Southern Crescent Tech CC 79-71. He added six rebounds, two assists, and three steals as Chatt Tech streaked to its eleventh straight win. The Eagles are now 17-1 overall, 4-0 in conference, and ranked No. 14 nationally in the NJCAA Division I. ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanuel College (G/F, Junior, Excel Christian Academy) . . . a starter for the 11-3 Lions, Robinson is averaging 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game in just over 21 minutes per game. He scored 9 points with a pair of rebounds and assists in a Jan. 16, 91-81 win over Lees-McRae. Emmanual topped Mount Olive 71-67 Jan. 13 as Robinson scored 6 points, grabbed 2 rebounds, and made a steal. The Lions are 6-2 and currently in third place in Conference Carolinas behind Barton (NC) and King (TN). COREY TOBIN — Chattahoochee Tech CC (SG, Sophomore, Cartersville HS) . . . as a starter for the 17-1 Golden Eagles, Tobin is scoring 9.1 points and grabbing 3.9 rebounds with 4.6 assists while logging just under 30 minutes per game. He recently scored 15 points with three rebounds and six assists in a Jan. 6 win over Gordon State. CTCC is 4-0 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association, and ranked No. 14 nationally in the NJCAA Division I.   • Woodland wrestling places second in Class AAAAA

    The Woodland Wildcats’ wrestling team added a fifth consecutive runner-up finish at the GHSA Class AAAAA State Team Duals Championship Saturday. Woodland reached the championship match for a sixth straight season with relatively easy wins over Effingham County 57-18 in Thursday’s opening round, followed by a 53-18 win over Jones County in the quarterfinals and a 56-12 win over Allatoona Friday in the semifinals. Defending champion and top-seed, Camden County, defeated Woodland in the finals 59-8. Woodland has now reached the state championship match each year since winning the title in 2011. In the finals match against Camden, Dawson Woods and Logan Sims earned wins at 126-pounds and 132-pounds, but Camden controlled the remainder of the match with seven pins over the final nine matches. Other state champions crowned on Saturday included Archer in Class 6A, Gilmer 4A, Jefferson 3A, Social Circle 2A, and Commerce in Class A. Cass, who finished as Area 7AAAAA runner-up to Woodland, won four of five matches at the state tournament to finish third. The Colonels avenged their only loss of the tournament Saturday when they defeated Clarke Central in the third place match.

  • Cass Middle School wins state title

    The Cass Middle School wrestling team won the 24-team Georgia Middle School Championship Tournament Saturday, January 9 in Ellijay at Gilmer High School for the school’s first state title. The Cass Middle School wrestling team had finished state runner-up the previous three years. Cass Middle, the top seed, went 4-0 in the state tournament and defeated Tift County 61-30 in the finals. The Colonels had wins over Adairsville (58-33), West Laurens (62-30), and Gilmer (58-24) to reach the championship match against Tift County. Cass wrestlers Isaac Linley, Reese Sisson, Dalton Cornett, Seth McFarland, Reed Davis, and Aristro Perez each went undefeated at the state tournament. The remainder of head coach Justin Martin’s squad includes Hayden Miller, Hunter Lee, Jacob Timm, Jamyus Hudson, Andrew Elizalde, Alex DePasquale, Tristan Munoz, Alex Glass, Adan Urizar, Jamie Reyes, Noah Hoffmier, Isai Romero, Emmanuel Hayes, Dominick Cosentino, Cameron Hill, and Kanler Brooks. Cass was undefeated in dual matches this season and added the Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association championship team duals title Saturday (Jan. 16) to finish the season 19-0. The Colonels had wins over South Central 86-12, Adairsville 81-18, and Woodland 69-25 to win the BGMSAA title.

  • Canes edged in OT

    ROME BOYS 79, CARTERSVILLE 76 (OT) The Canes trailed by nine entering the second half Saturday night at Rome, but rallied to send the game into overtime. Kobie Whitfield, who scored 20 points, hit a three-pointer at the buzzer in regulation to extend the game. Rome was still able to escape with a win in the overtime period. Cartersville is now 11-5 on the year and plays Monday at Woodland (7 pm) and Tuesday at Northwest Whitfield (7:30pm). Rome improved to 10-8 with the victory. ROME GIRLS 52, CARTERSVILLE 27 Rome improved to 12-6 overall with a non-region win over visiting Cartersville. The Lady Canes play at Woodland Monday (5:30pm) and Tuesday at Northwest Whitfield at 6pm.

  • Lady Colonels, Colonels win at Adairsville

    The Cass basketball teams added non-region wins Saturday night at Adairsville against their county rivals to sweep the season series. CASS GIRLS 57, ADAIRSVILLE 32 The Cass Lady Colonels took a five point lead after one period and extended it each quarter on their way to a 57-32 win Saturday night at county rival Adairsville. Cass got 13 points each from Jana Morning and Lexy Walraven to lead their attack. Payton Stoddard, Esmeralda Thomas, and Haley Gildersleeve contributed seven points each for the Lady Colonels. Alexis Ware scored four, followed by Breanna Hutchins with three, Kyla Michienzi two, and Jaclyn Hazelwood with one point. Zay Harris led Adairsville with eight points, while Taylor Greene and Havyn Isaac both scored five. Josie Summerville, Logan O’Neal, Latya Printup, and Victoria Davis each added three points for the Lady Tigers, followed by Lori Cimino and Chloe Powell with one each. The Lady Colonels improved to 11-8 on the year. The Lady Tigers are now 7-11. Cass goes on the road next week to play at Rome Tuesday (6pm) and at Sequoyah Friday (6pm). Adairsville hosts a pair of home games against Sonoraville Tuesday (6pm) and Coahulla Creek Friday (6pm). CASS BOYS 78, ADAIRSVILLE 46 The Colonels breezed past the home-standing Tigers Saturday night and remained perfect on the year against county rivals with a 32-point win at Adairsville. Cass led the entire game including 10-7 after one period and 28-18 at halftime, but started to impose their will after the break. The Colonels scored 28 points in the third quarter and allowed only 10 to pull away from the Tigers. Mike Sims led all scorers in the game with 17 points, followed by Ian Whittington with 13 and Jake Collum 12 for Cass. C.J. Bennett and Ashton Burley tossed in eight apiece. Mark Chester scored seven. Jacquez Mills added four, followed by Tristan Coffman, Carter Hedden, Matt Ginn, and Noah James with two each. Ed Curtis made a free throw to round out the Colonels’ scoring. The Tigers leading scorer was Cody Henderson with 11 points, followed by Ethan Belcher and Juan Perez with nine each. James Sims and Cole Hewitt totaled four and three points, respectively for Adairsville followed by two points each from Hunter Hice, Shane Hamby, Devin Isaac, Bryce Holland, and Grayson Dailey. Cass (8-10 overall) plays at Rome Tuesday (7:30pm) and at Sequoyah Friday (7:30pm). Adairsville (5-13) has home games next week with Sonoraville Tuesday (7:30pm) and Coahulla Creek on Friday (7:30pm).

  • Eagles take homecoming victory

    EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 77, WALKER 68 Chris Hale scored 29 and Darius Thrower 24 as the Excel Christian Academy Eagles defeated visiting Walker 77-68 in ECA’s 2015-16 Homecoming game Saturday. The Eagles took a 16-7 lead after one quarter and extended their advantage to 35-21 at halftime. Although the visiting Wolverines edged Excel 47-42 over the final half, the Eagles held on for a nine point win. Thrower and Hale combined for ten three-pointers for the Eagles. Caleb West also reached double digits for Excel with 14 points. Max Rowland and Latrel Jones scored four points each. Joseph Cuomo added a basket. Sam Bush, who scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half, led Walker. Robert Baker scored 20 for the Wolverines and Spencer Palladro added nine. The win evened ECA’s season mark at 9-9. Walker slipped to 11-5. Excel travels to Mount Paran Tuesday for games that begin at 6pm and host Temple next Saturday with the girls’ game tipping at 2:30pm. WALKER GIRLS 40, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 27 The Excel Christian Lady Eagles were shutout 15-0 in the first quarter of their Homecoming matchup with Walker Saturday and could not recover in a 13 point loss. Walker sophomore post Grace Mulroy scored 13 points, including eight in the first period to lead all scorers in the game. Saige Cornick-Turpin had 10 for the Lady Wolverines, followed by Alison Hebert, Jesse Baynes, and Winnie Litchfield with four points each. Whitney Harris led Excel with 10 points. Brighton McCollum scored five, Rylie Boston four, Xena Enos four, Anna Lane Hattaway two, and Bailey Cox two for the Lady Eagles. The loss evens Excel’s season record at 9-9. Walker improved to 5-10. ECA plays at Mount Paran Tuesday and hosts Temple next Saturday.

  • Cass wrestling team finishes third at state tournament

    The Cass Colonels’ wrestling team avenged their state quarterfinals, one-point loss to Clarke Central Saturday afternoon by defeating the Gladiators 50-15 to capture third place at the GHSA Class AAAAA State Wrestling Team Duals. In the championship bracket Friday, Cass lost 29-28 to Clarke Central and had to win four straight matches Friday and Saturday to finish third in the state. The Colonels finished 5-1 at the state tournament, with wins over Dunwoody, Heritage-Conyers, Starr’s Mill, Allatoona, and Clarke Central. Meanwhile, Woodland has reached the state championship match for a sixth consecutive year. The Wildcats will look to knock off defending state champion, Camden County, in the finals. Woodland lost the state championship match to Camden last season. Woodland and Camden County meet for the Class AAAAA state championship Saturday at 3pm. The 2016 GHSA State Wrestling Team Duals are being held at Macon Centreplex.
