- Wildcats and Canes win region openers
March 12, 2024 The Woodland and Cartersville baseball teams won their Region 7-5A openers on the road on Tuesday night. WOODLAND 13, DALTON 1 The Wildcats pounded out 14 hits and won their Region 7-5A opener at Dalton on Tuesday, 13-1. Pitchers Zach Lambert (4.1 IP, 0R, 3H, 0BB, 5K) and Connor Stermer (0.2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) combined to help close out the Catamounts in just five innings. Stermer had three hits including a double and one RBI. Ayden Ray (home run, double, four RBIs), Brett Good (home run, four RBIs), and Mason Williams (two RBIs) finished with two hits. Conner Lujan (RBI), Logan Bentley, Joshua Hicks (double), and Cam Williams added one hit. Woodland (8-3, 1-0) and Dalton (4-6, 0-1) play at Woodland on Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and will conclude the series on Friday at Dalton. CARTERSVILLE 7, CALHOUN 5 The Canes took the lead in the fifth inning and held on to win at Calhoun on Tuesday in both teams’ Region 7-5A opener. Cam Cochran gave Cartersville a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a home run to left field but the host Yellow Jackets scored a run in the second inning and four more in the fourth to take a 5-3 advantage. Cartersville regained the lead in the fifth on Caleb Daniel’s three run homer. Ryan Johnson struck out 13 to earn the pitching victory. He yielded five runs (three earned) on four hits and no walks. Andrew Purdy, who also had two hits on offense, walked one and struck out three in one inning on the mound. Luke Miller (RBI), Aidan Larkin, and Tristan McKibben added one hit. Cartersville (9-3, 1-0) and Calhoun (4-7, 0-1) play Game 2 of their series at Richard Bell Field on Thursday and will wrap up the series on Friday back in Calhoun. Both games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m. HEARTS ACADEMY 13, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 3 The Eagles produced 11 hits in the game but the Panthers plated runs in four of six frames in a 13-3 Hearts Academy win Tuesday in Powder Springs. Jacob Jinks (0.2 IP, 6R, 0ER, 4H, 3BB) made the pitching start for Excel and was tagged with the loss. Cameron Adams (5 IP, 7R, 4ER, 6H, 3BB, 7K) pitched in relief. Kohl Williams had three hits for the Eagles. Jinks (RBI) and Adams (double) produced two hits. David Jinks (RBI), Kamarion Profit (RBI), McKaden Gentry, and Carter May added one hit. Hearts Academy improved to 2-6 on the season. Excel (2-2) hosts the Panthers on Thursday for a doubleheader at Joe Cowan Park.

March 12, 2024 Georgia Highlands softball split a home doubleheader with East Georgia State CC on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers won the opening game 8-6 but lost the second game 10-2. In the opener Haylee Dishmon, Ally Graden, and Aliza Martinez combined for seven hits to pace the GHC offense while pitchers Hayden Joyner and Jaycie Hand limited East Georgia State to six runs on ten hits. Joyner made the start in the circle and picked up the pitching win. Hand closed out the final four innings. Dishmon was 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and one RBI. Martinez had two doubles and two RBIs. Graden finished 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Her plate appearances included a double and she was hit by a pitch. In Game 2, Bobcats pitchers kept Georgia Highlands off the scoreboard through four innings while the East Georgia State offense took a 10-0 lead. The Chargers posted two runs in the fifth inning. Grace Kendrick (3.1 IP, 7ER, 5H, 5BB, 3K) took the pitching loss in the second game. Hand (1.2 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB) retired the final five outs. Dishmon, Cailey Barnett, Avrey Fisher, and Ansley Farmer contributed one hit in the loss. The doubleheader split leaves East Georgia State with a 4-14 record and 1-1 mark in conference play. Georgia Highlands (4-19, 1-3) plays at Andrew College on Saturday.
- Cartersville gymnastics second at home meet
March 12, 2024 The Cartersville High gymnastics team finished second of five teams last Saturday in a home meet held at the Cartersville Twisters facility. The Canes, with 105.45 points, finished less than one point behind the meet winner North Atlanta (106.2). Allatoona (102.2), River Ridge (78.85), and Woodstock (48) rounded out the meet scoring. All participating teams were in Class 6A. Cartersville is a Class 5A school. Cartersville senior Ava Poole finished third in the All Around with a score of 36.0. She was first on floor with a 9.4, fourth on beam (9.25), and fifth on bars (8.95). Karley Garrison, also a senior, placed fourth All Around with 35.65 points. She was third on beam (9.4). Both Poole and Garrison produced state meet qualifying scores. Other members of the Cartersville team this year are Alyson Dunn (senior), Emerie Elrod (sophomore), Arabella Kilgore (freshman), and Averie Brotherton (freshman). The Canes host their next meet at Cartersville Twisters on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

March 11, 2024 Rockmart built a 6-0 lead through the first four innings Monday night and held on to beat visiting Cass, 6-2. The Yellow Jackets (8-5) scored three runs in the first, two in the third, and one more in the fourth inning. The two Cass runs crossed in the top of the sixth. Hunter Lovett (3 IP, 5R, 3ER, 5H, 0BB, 6K) made the pitching start for the Colonels and was charged with the loss. Jacob Johnson (1 IP, 1ER, 2H), Justin Peace (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB), Devan Hutchinson (0.2 IP, 3BB), and Chase Tatum (0.1 IP) also pitched. Three Rockmart pitchers -- Trey Luke, Gage Campbell, and Rob Yagyu -- combined for 10 strikeouts and limited the Colonels to only three hits. Nic Wright (two RBIs) and Lovett had one double. Tatum had the only other Cass hit. Cass (6-5) hosts Lafayette on Thursday at 5:55 p.m. HOLY GROUND BAPTIST 9, EXCEL CHRISTIAN 3 Excel Christian Academy baseball lost 9-3 on Monday to visiting Holy Ground Baptist Academy from Carroll County. The Eagles led 2-0 after one inning but the Stallions took control over the next two innings by scoring six runs — three in the second and three in the third. Excel narrowed the deficit to 6-3 in the fourth inning but Holy Ground responded with three more runs in the sixth inning to close out the scoring. Kohl Williams (3.2 IP, 3ER, 13H, 0BB, 2K) was charged with the pitching loss for ECA in relief of starter Jayden Winston (2.1 IP, 6R, 0ER, 3H, 5BB, 2K). Jacob Jinks (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) pitched the seventh inning for the Eagles, G Dyson had two hits including one double and one RBI for Excel. Jinks finished with one hit and one RBI. Williams, McKaden Gentry, and Kamarion Profit added one hit for the Eagles. Holy Ground improved to 2-0. Excel Christian (2-1) plays at Hearts Academy (Powder Springs) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

ANDERSON McCARY — Birmingham-Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … shot 93-91-85—269 and finished 93rd at the 17-team Port City Classic March 4-5 in Savannah. The tournament was won by Maryville College (Tenn.). BSC was 17th. The next event for the Panthers is the Wynlakes Invitational on April 1-2 in Montgomery, Alabama. CHANC WILLIS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … tied for 21st of 56 players at the 10-team Point University Invitational March 4-5 at the par-72, 7,033-yard Newnan Country Club. Henson carded rounds of 82-75-75—232. The Eagles are scheduled for the William Carey Invitational March 11-12 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. WRESTLING ANGEL BANDA — Reinhardt University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … the 125-pounder made it to the third round of the NAIA National Tournament March 3-4 before losing. That sent him to the consolation rounds where he won two matches before being eliminated. CALEB HENSON — Virginia Tech (So., Woodland HS) … finished runner-up in the 149-pound weight class at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Sunday in Chapel Hill. He lost to Jackson Arrington of NC State in a sudden victory. Henson’s semifinal win was over Finn Solomon of Pitt. He was ranked No. 2 nationally in the weight division entering the conference tournament. Next is the NCAA Championships in Kansas City on March 21-23. TYLER McKNIGHT — Davidson College (Fr., Cass HS) … the 149-pounder finished 1-2 at the Southern Conference Championships. His win was in overtime over his VMI opponent in the consolation rounds. The Wildcats finished sixth in the eight-team conference tournament. JAXON SMITH — University of Maryland (R-So., Woodland HS) … placed fourth in the 197-pound weight class at the Big Ten Championships this past weekend in College Park (Md.). Smith went 2-2 with a win over opponents from Rutgers and Minnesota. His semifinal loss was in sudden victory to Zach Glazier of Iowa and he fell in the third-place match to Silas Allred of Nebraska. He was ranked No. 3 nationally in the weight class going into the conference tournament. Next is the NCAA Championships in Kansas City on March 21-23. BASKETBALL JA’KA’YAH DRAUGHN — Chattanooga State CC (Fr., Cartersville HS) … scored two points and grabbed five rebounds with two assists and one steal on Monday, March 4 in an 82-52 home win over Southwest Tennessee CC. On Sunday in a 78-64 TCCAA tournament win over Columbia State CC, Draughn scored three points with one rebound, one assist, and one steal. The NJCAA 25th-ranked Tigers (29-1) play Dyersburg State CC on Monday in the tournament semifinals. The championship game is on Tuesday. T.J. PRINTUP, JR. — Tusculum University (R-Fr., Adairsville HS) … grabbed six rebounds and scored two points with one assist and one steal but the Pioneers lost 68-60 to Carson-Newman in the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference tournament last Wednesday. Printup played in 26 games (one start) this season and averaged 5.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Tusculum finished the year with a 14-13 mark. SOFTBALL KILEY ARNOLD — University of West Alabama (Fr., Cartersville HS) … had three pinch-hitting appearances — one at Spring Hill College last Thursday and two on Sunday at home against Valdosta State — but did not reach base. UWA (14-9, 5-7 Gulf South Conference) hosts Georgia Southwestern for a doubleheader on Tuesday and travels to Delta State University for a three-game conference series on Saturday and Sunday. LAINEY BAKER — Union University (So., Woodland HS) … made pitching appearances this past Saturday and Sunday at Christian Brothers University. She totaled 6-⅓ innings in the circle and allowed four earned runs (five total) on five hits with no walks although she hit two batters. She fanned eight and received no decision on Saturday but was tagged with the pitching loss on Sunday. In 12 appearances this season, Baker is 5-4 with a 2.66 ERA. The Bulldogs (15-9, 7-5 Gulf South Conference) host Shorter University on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game conference series. MICAH EARWOOD — Georgia State University (So., Cartersville HS) … pitched the sixth inning for the Panthers this past Saturday in a 12-11 home win over Army. Earwood allowed three, unearned runs on one hit and two walks. He also hit one batter and recorded two strikeouts receiving no decision. Georgia State (8-8) beat Mercer last Wednesday and split four games with Army over the weekend. They play South Carolina on Tuesday in Augusta and have a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at South Alabama on Friday through Sunday. CAL GOSS — Lee University (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … pitched a scoreless seventh inning this past Saturday in a 13-3 home win over Cedarville University (Ohio). Goss issued one walk and recorded one strikeout. The Flames (15-7, 6-3 Gulf South Conference) play at Carson-Newman on Tuesday and host Auburn University-Montgomery for three games on Friday and Saturday. COLT McKIBBEN — Lee University (So., Cartersville HS) … made pitching relief appearances last Wednesday at Lincoln Memorial University and at home on Saturday against Cedarville University. DREW ROTHSCHILD — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (So., Cartersville HS) … went 5-for-9 with two walks, a double, and one RBI in three games last week as the Stallions beat College of Central Florida and Jackson College but lost at Gulf Coast State CC. ABAC (8-13) visits Wallace-Dothan CC for two games on Tuesday. TREY SCOTT — Alabama A&M University (Jr., Cass HS) … retired the only batter he faced in the sixth inning last Tuesday in a 20-9 loss at Tennessee Tech. He also pitched the sixth inning allowing two earned runs on one hit and two walks last Friday in an 11-1 loss at Louisiana-Monroe. The Bulldogs (2-13) host Florida A&M this weekend for a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series. HANK SMITH — Jacksonville State University (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … made a start last Friday in a 5-4 home win over Iowa as designated hitter. He went 0-for-4. March 10, 2024 Georgia Highlands Baseball completed a four-game weekend sweep of USC Lancaster on Sunday and extended their current win streak to 14 games with a pair of five-inning wins. The Chargers won Sunday’s first game 11-1 and took Game 2, 10-0. Pitchers Chandler Anderson (4 IP, 1ER, 4H, 3BB, 8K) and Oliver Wood (3.2 IP, 0R, 4H, 3BB, 7K) collected their fourth wins of the season. Andrew Arnold (0.2 IP, 0R, 1K), Logan Spivey (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K), and Brodie Chestnutt (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K) pitched in relief. Barrett Eldridge had five hits on Sunday including one home run, one double, and four RBIs. Trevor Lovett followed with four hits and one RBI. Will Cawthon contributed three hits with one home run, one double, and four RBIs. Luke Orfi (RBI), Ali Banks (double, three RBIs), Ryan Wideman (RBI), and Davis Newman (double, RBI) had two hits. March 10, 2024 The 6th-ranked Georgia Highlands College baseball team won a pair of home games Saturday over USC Lancaster. The Chargers won 13-1 and 9-3. Starting pitchers Trip Dovale and Michael Sharman picked up wins on the mound. Dovale, now 6-0, scattered three hits with no walks in four shutout innings. He struck out four. Landen Loyd (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) closed out the final inning of Game 1. Sharman went six innings and struck out ten while improving to 4-1. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and one walk. Trace Home retired all three batters he faced in the seventh inning with one strikeout. Ryan Wideman had five hits on the day including a home run, two doubles, and four RBIs. Grayson Godbee finished with four hits including one homer, two doubles, and four RBIs. Luke Orfi followed with three hits including two home runs and four RBIs. Will Cawthon (two doubles, RBI) and Davis Newman (three doubles, three RBIs) also produced three hits in the doubleheader. Georgia Highlands (24-2) hosts the Lancers (16-7) for two more games on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.

March 8, 2024 The Woodland Wildcats ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, won an intense region opener over visiting Cartersville on Friday night in heavy rains, 3-0. Chris Sanchez gave Woodland an early 1-0 lead off an assist from Dieby Sanchez in the 14th minute. That lead would stand at the intermission. In the second half, the scoring roles reversed for the Wildcats when Chris Sanchez fed Deiby Sanchez in the 47th minute for a 2-0 Woodland advantage. Five minutes later, Chris Sanchez closed out the scoring with a header into the net on an assist from Hunter Limbaugh. Armed with a 3-0 advantage, the Wildcats maintained their shutout over the final 28 minutes to remain undefeated on the season. Woodland keeper, Miguel Pineda, had two saves behind the Wildcats' defense. The loss dropped Cartersville to 2-7 on the season and 0-1 in Region 7-5A. The Canes play at Creekview on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and host Calhoun in a region match on Friday. Woodland (7-0, 1-0) plays at Kennesaw Mountain on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and travels to top-ranked Dalton on Friday night. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 6, WOODLAND 1 The Lady Canes scored four goals in the first half on Friday night at Woodland and won the Region 7-5A opener for both teams, 6-1. Hattie Williams and Annabelle Williams scored two goals for Cartersville. Mallory Nicklas and Lundyn Eubanks also scored for the Lady Canes. Goalkeeper Helen Leaming and the Cartersville defense kept Woodland off the scoreboard until the final six minutes. The Lady Cats (4-1, 0-1) play at East Paulding on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and will travel to Dalton on Friday for their next region match. The Lady Canes (5-4, 1-0) travel to Creekview on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start and will return to region action on Friday at home against Calhoun in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 10, RIDGELAND 0 The Lady Tigers needed only the first half on Friday night to dispose of their host Ridgeland Lady Panthers in Rossville, 10-0, by mercy rule. Sam Gough and Ella Edwards earned hat tricks with three goals each while Lizzy LeMay finished the evening with four assists. Alex Damer and Alivia Joslin finished with two goals. Gough and Carly Edwards were credited with one assist. The Adairsville girls (7-2, 2-0) visit Ringgold on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. kickoff and will host Bremen on Thursday at 5 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 4, RIDGELAND 0 The Tigers won their Region 6-3A opener Friday night at Ridgeland, 4-0. The loss dropped the Panthers to 5-6 on the season and 0-2 in region play. Adairsville (2-3-2, 1-0) plays at Ringgold on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. kickoff and will host Bremen on Thursday. COAHULLA CREEK 3, CASS GIRLS 0 The visiting Lady Colts won 3-0 at Cass on Thursday night in a non-region match. Coahulla Creek improved to 6-4 with the victory. Cass (3-5, 0-1 in Region 7-5A) hosts Bremen on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and returns to region play on Tuesday at Hiram in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. March 9, 2024 The Cass girls and boys track and field teams finished third in a tri-meet Thursday at Gordon Central High School in Calhoun. Chattooga won the girls’ meet while the host Warriors won the boys’ meet. - GHC drops a softball DH at Georgia Military College
March 9, 2024 Georgia Highlands Softball lost both games of a doubleheader Thursday at Georgia Military College. The Bulldogs won the opening game 8-0 and won 14-6 in the second game. GMC scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning of Game 1 to take control and pitcher H Daughtry scattered three hits and three walks to earn a shutout win. The Bulldogs started quickly in Game 2 also. The hosts scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and added on over the final three frames to win in five innings. Cayden Warren had two hits and three RBIs in the two games for the Lady Chargers. Avrey Fisher and Ansley Farmer also had two hits in the doubleheader. Georgia Military evened their season record to 11-11. The Bulldogs start conference play 2-0. Georgia Highlands (3-18, 0-2) will host a GCAA conference doubleheader on Tuesday with East Georgia State CC.
