April 13, 2024 Top-ranked Cartersville defeated visiting Cass 6-2 on Saturday morning at Richard Bell Field to complete the Canes’ 2024 region slate with a 12-0 record. The win also marks the first time the Hurricanes have gone undefeated in region play in back-to-back seasons since the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Nate Russell tossed six strong innings to collect Saturday’s pitching victory. Russell allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out eleven. Nolan Elrod closed out a scoreless seventh inning. Elrod walked two and struck out one. Andrew Purdy paced the Canes’ offense with two hits including a double and two RBIs. Six others in the Cartersville lineup added one hit. Cole Crawford hit a solo home run. Luke Miller tripled. Thomas Peters doubled. Aidan Larkin (RBI), Caleb Daniel (RBI), Luke Miller, and Tristan McKibben singled. Cayden Roberts (4 iP, 4ER, 5H, 1BB, 3K) made the pitching start for the Colonels and took the loss. Chase Tatum (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H) and Devan Hutchinson (1 IP, 2K) recorded three outs each for Cass. Hunter Lovett, Jesiel Moctezuma, and Hutchinson had hits for Cass. Tatum drove in one run. CALHOUN 3, WOODLAND 2 (8 innings) Woodland baseball tied the game late but fell in extra innings on Saturday afternoon to visiting Calhoun, 3-2. With their victory, the Yellow Jackets took two of three games in the region series. with each game decided by one run. Mason Williams was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the second inning and worked his way around the bags to eventually score on a wild pitch as the Wildcats grabbed an early 1-0 advantage. Calhoun answered in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Camden Stewart singled home two runs for the Jackets. Back-to-back singles by Ayden Ray and Jake Clowers in the bottom of the sixth led to a tying run for the Wildcats. Logan Bentley’s sacrifice bunt scored pinch-runner Jonathan Ryan. After a quiet seventh inning, Calhoun took the lead in the top of the eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk. Ray doubled to open the Woodland eighth inning but two groundouts and a strikeout ended the Wildcats’ threat to tie. Woodland starting pitcher Zach Lambert (4 IP, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 3K) worked the first four innings. Lucas Baker (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 3BB) was saddled with the pitching loss in relief. JD Trail (1 IP, 2K) retired the final three outs with two strikeouts. Ray and Clowers finished with two hits including one double each for the Wildcats. Conner Lujan and Connor Stermer added one hit. Bentley contributed one RBI. Calhoun improved to 8-17 overall and into second place in Region 7-5A with a 4-5 region mark. The Yellow Jackets hold a tie-breaker over Cass (13-13, 4-5) head-to-head. Calhoun completes the region schedule next week with a three-game series against Dalton. Woodland (12-13, 3-6) has a three-game region series with Cass that begins at home on Monday at 5:55 p.m. The series moves to the Colonels’ home field on Wednesday and returns to Woodland on Friday.

April 13, 2024 Georgia Highlands baseball split a home doubleheader with South Georgia State on Saturday losing the opener 4-1 but winning the second game, 8-0. The Saturday split means the Chargers won three of four games this week in their conference series with the Hawks. Trip Dovale pitched a gem in the opening game for Georgia Highlands and carried a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning before succumbing to a loss. Dovale went 6-⅓ and was charged with a second and third earned run in the top of the seventh. He walked two and struck out five. Reece Robertson (0.1 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1K) and Trace Horne (0.1 IP, 1BB) retired one out each in the final frame. The Chargers couldn’t solve Hawks pitcher Nathan Webb who fanned nine while scattering three hits and three walks to earn the victory. Luke Orfi (double), Ryan Wideman, and Ryan Martin had the GHC hits in the loss. In the series finale, Chargers pitcher Chandler Anderson dominated from the mound. He tossed a seven-inning complete game and yielded just two hits and two walks while striking out two.The Georgia Highlands offense was anchored by Wideman who was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs. Orfi followed with two hits. Barrett Eldridge (double, two RBIs), Martin (solo home run), and Clay Wiesen added one hit. South Georgia State moves to 23-23 overall and 6-10 in conference play. The Chargers (39-7, 11-5 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) have a four-game conference series coming up with Andrew College. GHC will host Tuesday at 4 p.m. and will play three games in Cuthbert on Friday and Saturday.

April 12, 2024 The No. 1-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes swept a doubleheader at Cass Friday night and clinched their third consecutive region championship in the process. The Region 7-5A title is the 29th overall region championship for the Cartersville program. Cartersville won the first game 10-1 with pitcher Sawyer Wilson picking up the Canes’ pitching win. Wilson completed five innings allowing just one, unearned run on two hits and one walk. He struck out six. Nicholas Hruby worked the final two innings allowing only one walk. Hruby fanned two. In the second game, Cass led 2-1 through six innings before the Hurricanes broke it open with a five-run seventh inning. Cartersville took advantage of three walks, an error, a passed ball, and hits by Andrew Purdy and Landon Cole to post their runs. Purdy collected the Game 2 pitching win in relief. He worked the final two innings without allowing a run or a hit. He had two walks and four strikeouts. Logan Shrewsbury (4 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 7K), Dawson Bishop (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB), and Maddox Frazier (2 BF, 1R, 0ER, 2BB) also pitched for Cartersville. Cole had five hits including two doubles and two RBIs in the two games. Luke Miller (double, triple, home run, two RBIs) and Purdy (two doubles, three RBIs) finished with three hits in the doubleheader. Cameron Cochran (double, four RBIs) and Aidan Larkin (RBI) contributed two hits. Cole Crawford (home run, two RBIs), Nolan Elrod (double), and Caleb Daniel added one hit for the Canes. Cass managed just four hits in the two games. Jesiel Moctezuma (double, RBI), Chase Tatum (solo home run), Devan Hutchinson, and Nic Wright contributed one hit for the Colonels. Cartersville (21-4, 11-0) will host Cass (13-12, 4-4) in Game 3 of their series on Saturday at 10 a.m. ADAIRSVILLE 13, COAHULLA CREEK 0 ADAIRSVILLE 11, COAHULLA CREEK 7 The Adairsville Tigers swept a Friday night doubleheader with Coahulla Creek winning 13-0 in five innings and 11-7. More importantly, the two wins have clinched a state playoff berth for the Tigers with two region games remaining on the schedule. Pitchers McCayden Hufstetler and Hudson Parr combined for a one-hitter that included six strikeouts in the first game. In Game 2, the Tigers trailed 7-5 through 5-½ innings but scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to escape with an 11-7 win. Hudson Parr picked up the pitching victory with 2-⅔ shutout innings of relief. He struck out four. Five Tigers had three hits in the doubleheader.Jack Nelson (two doubles, four RBIs), Jarrett Scott (four RBIs), Peyton Bowen (two doubles, RBI), Ryan Farr (double, two RBIs), and PJ Weeks (RBI) finished with three hits. Landon O’Neal (double, four RBIs) added one hit. Harrison Cole was credited with two RBIs and Lucas Henry contributed one RBI. The losses dropped the Colts to 7-15 overall and 2-10 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (15-7, 8-4) plays at 8th-ranked Bremen on Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. The two teams will play a second game in their series on Thursday at Adairsville. CALHOUN 4, WOODLAND 3 Host Calhoun scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh Friday night to rally past visiting Woodland in walk-off fashion, 4-3. The Wildcats took a 3-1 lead to the Yellow Jackets’ final frame but Calhoun took advantage of a pair of singles, a double, a sac bunt, an error, and two intentional walks to plate their come-from-behind runs. Woodland scored all three of its runs in the top of the fourth inning. Logan Bentley doubled home two runs and Brett Good added a RBI single to build the Wildcats’ 3-1 lead. Both teams finished with five hits in the game. Mason Williams, Jake Clowers, and Connor Stermer (double) had the other Woodland base hits. Ayden Ray (6.1 IP, 4R, 2ER, 5H, 3BB, 12K) struck out 12 but was tagged with the Wildcats’ pitching loss. April 12, 2024 Georgia Highlands started fast Friday afternoon and cruised to a 12-1 home win over the South Georgia State Hawks. The Chargers scored seven runs in the bottom of the first and led 9-0 after two innings in the victory. Michael Sharman pitched all seven innings for GHC. He scattered four hits and one walk. Sharman needed only 78 pitches and fanned nine. Luke Orfi had two hits for the Chargers. C.J. Blackwell (three RBIs) and Barrett Eldridge (two RBIs) homered. Gray Wilson (two RBIs), Ryan Martin (RBI), and Ryan Wideman (double) added one hit. Georgia Highlands (38-6, 10-4) and South Georgia (22-22, 5-9) will complete their four-game series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The NJCAA 5th-ranked Chargers lead the series 2-0.

April 12, 2024 The Georgia Highlands College softball team swept a home doubleheader with visiting Andrew College on Friday afternoon and has now won four straight games. The Chargers won the first game 11-0  in five innings and completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the second game. Georgia Highlands outhit the visiting Lady Tigers 19 to 6 in the two games. Grace Kendrick (4 IP, 0R, 1H, 3BB, 3K) made the pitching start and collected the win in the opening game for GHC. Hayden Joyner (5 IP, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 2K) started in the circle and picked up the win in the second game. Jaycie Hand (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 3K) pitched in relief in both games for the Lady Chargers. Chloe Fowler had five hits in the doubleheader including a double and three RBIs to lead the Georgia Highlands offense. Avrey Fisher had three hits including a homer and two RBIs and Cayden Warren also finished with three hits that included a pair of doubles. Cailey Barnett (RBI), Kendrick (two RBIs), and Hannah Mounce finished with two hits. Ally Graden contributed a double and two RBIs while Haylee Dishmon added a double, three RBIs, and stole four bases. Joyner and Ansley Farmer both pitched in with one RBI each. Andrew falls to 5-34 for the season and 2-12 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play. Georgia Highlands, now third in the conference standings, improved to 13-24 overall and 10-8 in the GCAA. Next for the Chargers is a home doubleheader with conference-leading ABAC on Wednesday.

April 11, 2024 In a state playoff tune-up match for both teams, the Adairsville girls’ soccer team built a big early lead Thursday and cruised to an 8-1 home victory over Woodland. The Lady Tigers led 6-0 after the opening 40 minutes and outscored the Lady Cats 2-1 in the second half. Ella Edwards scored four goals for the Tigers — two on penalty kicks — and had two assists. Alivia Joslin scored two goals. Sam Gough and Alexa Damer finished with one goal and one assist. Carly Edwards and Maddie Gossett added one assist. Woodland's second-half goal was scored by Maddie Weightman off an assist from Libby Morgan. Adairsville (13-3) will host Dawson County next Tuesday in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs. Woodland (10-3) travels to Greater Atlanta Christian on Tuesday for a first-round match in the Class 5A playoffs. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 5, LAFAYETTE 2 The Adairsville boys will be the No. 3 seed from Region 6-AAA in the Class 3A state playoffs following the Tigers' 5-2 win at home Thursday night over LaFayette. Adairsville (6-6-2) will be on the road next Wednesday in the state playoffs at the No. 2 seed from Region 7-AAA. WOODLAND BOYS AT NORTH PAULDING The Woodland boys lost a non-region match Thursday night at North Paulding, 3-1. The Wolfpack (9-5-3) scored all three goals in the first half to lead 3-0 at the intermission. Woodland (10-5) is the No. 4 seed from Region 7-5A and will play at Chattahoochee, the Region 6-5A champion, in the first round of the state playoffs next Wednesday.

April 11, 2024 The Cartersville boys won the Region 7-5A championship tournament on Thursday with a victory over Calhoun in the finals. Dalton finished third and Woodland fourth to advance to the GHSA Class 5A playoffs. Brock Wilson won 6-1, 6-1 on Line 1 and Jack Minhinett won 6-2, 6-4 at Line 2 singles for the Hurricanes in the final match. Chandler Mathison and Julian Cline won the third Cartersville point with a victory at Line 2 doubles. The Cartersville girls finished third behind region champ Dalton and runner-up Calhoun. The Lady Canes took the third-place match over Hiram by forfeit. The Cartersville boys will host a state tournament first-round match next week against the No. 4 seed from Region 6-5A. The Woodland boys will play at the Region 6-5A champion and the Cartersville girls will travel to the No. 2 seed from Region 6-5A. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS ADVANCE The Adairsville boys finished fourth in the Region 6-3A tournament in Dalton and will advance to the Class 3A state playoffs next week. The Tigers will play at Region 7-3A champ Wesleyan.

April 10, 2024 The Woodland girls' soccer team trailed visiting Bremen 3-0 in the first half Wednesday evening but the Lady Cats scored five, unanswered goals for a 5-3 win. Woodland got on the scoreboard before the intermission but trailed 3-1 at the half. The Lady Cats outscored the Lady Blue Devils 4-0 in the second half to earn the victory. Allie York and Maddie Weightman scored two goals for Woodland. Maddie Weightman also finished with two assists. Libby Morgan scored the other Lady Cats’ goal. Ansley Burns and Reagan Weightman added one assist. The loss dropped Bremen to 8-7-2 on the season. Woodland (10-2) is scheduled to play at Adairsville on Thursday at 5 p.m. and will open the Class 5A state playoffs next Tuesday at Greater Atlanta Christian. WOODLAND BOYS 3, BREMEN 1 Juan Pineda scored unassisted in the opening minute and Chris Sanchez scored from a Joel Alberto assist in the 17th minute as Woodland grabbed an early advantage Wednesday night en route to a 3-1 victory over visiting Bremen. The Blue Devils scored their goal in the 35th minute to make the score 2-1 at the intermission on a rainy evening. Most of the second half was scoreless until Sanchez scored again in the 73rd minute off an assist from Hunter Limbaugh. Woodland keeper, Pedro Montalvo, was solid in goal for the Wildcats with three saves. The loss dropped Bremen to 11-4-2 for the season. Woodland (10-4) travels to North Paulding for a 5:30 match on Thursday and will open the Class 5A state playoffs next Wednesday on the road at the winner of Friday's match between Centennial and Chattahoochee.

April 10, 2024 Landon O’Neal’s sacrifice fly drove home Braxton Ryan Wednesday evening in the bottom of the eighth inning lifting the Adairsville Tigers to a 3-2 walkoff victory at home over Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. Ryan doubled to open the eighth inning. After Jack Nelson was intentionally walked, Hudson Parr advanced both base runners and loaded the bases with a bunt single. Both sides received strong pitching efforts. Eli Walker started on the mound for LFO and pitched into the seventh inning. Nelson (7.2 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 6K) started for Adairsville and went 7-⅔ innings with six strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs in the first three innings but kept the Warriors off the scoreboard the rest of the way. McCayden Hufstetler retired the final out in the eighth inning with a strikeout. Peyton Bowen (RBI) and Ryan had two hits for the Tigers. PJ Weeks, Jarrett Scott, Nelson, Parr, and Ryan Farr added one hit. The loss dropped the Warriors to 9-14 overall and 3-7 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (13-7, 6-4) is scheduled to play at Coahulla Creek on Thursday and host the Colts on Friday. Both games are set for 5:55 p.m. starts.

April 9, 2024 The Adairsville girls’ soccer team built an 8-1 lead by halftime and finished off visiting Pickens in a 20-minute second half Tuesday night to celebrate their 2024 seniors with an 8-2 final score. The Lady Tigers dominated possession in the first half and finished the night with 21 shots on goal. Alivia Johnson scored four goals and had one assist. Sam Gough followed with two goals and two assists. Ella Edwards and Alexa Damer scored goals. Jordyn Hartline and Carly Edwards added two assists each. The loss dropped the Dragons to 4-8 on the season. Adairsville (12-3) hosts Woodland (9-2) on Thursday at 5 p.m. in a state playoffs tune-up match.
