Georgia Highlands lost Tuesday afternoon at East Georgia State on a walk-off solo home run in the tenth inning, 2-1. The loss spoiled a nice pitching performance by a trio of Chargers. Declan Dun (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 2BB) made the start. Davis Mortland (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K) worked a scoreless sixth inning and Skyler Thellman (3.1 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 7K) struck out seven of the thirteen batters he faced down the stretch but suffered the loss. Georgia Highlands scored in the top of the first inning on Ryan Wideman’s RBI single. East Georgia tied the score in the third inning on an infield error, a single, and a sacrifice bunt. Zayd Brannigan finished with two hits for Georgia Highlands. Connor Faulkner, Mitchell Walker, Nic Ferrer, and Hudson Sapp added one hit apiece. The Chargers (22-11, 2-3 GCAA) host the Bobcats (17-14, 3-2) Friday and Saturday for the final three games of their week-long conference series.

The Class 5A No. 1-ranked Purple Hurricanes’ bats rattled off 20 hits Tuesday night at Dalton in an 18-6 Region 7-5A win. Miles Owen (2 RBIs), Harrison Childers (double, 2 RBIs), and Landon Cole (RBI) had three hits each for Cartersville. Luke Miller (two doubles, 3 RBIs) and Kaden Stephenson (double, 2 RBIs) finished with a pair of hits each. Caleb Daniel (sac fly, RBI), Tristan McKibben (double, RBI), Isaac MaNair-Seigler (double, RBI), and Paul Gamble (2 RBIs) added one hit apiece for the Canes. Caden Carroll (4 IP, 0R, 5H, 2BB, 9K) started on the mound for Cartersville and earned the pitching win. Nicholas Hruby (2 IP, 6R, 0ER, 4H, 0BB, 3K) worked middle relief and Jackson Harwell (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 3K) struck out the side in the seventh. Dalton (3-14, 1-6) continues this week’s three-game series with the Canes (15-2, 7-0) at Richard Bell Field on Thursday at 5:55 p.m. The final game of the series will be Friday at Dalton.

Calhoun hit a grand slam and scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning Tuesday night to build a big early lead, then leaned on the strong pitching of starter Jax Bishop and reliever Avery Shiflett to shut out Cass, 8-0. Bishop (5 IP, 0R, 2H, 4BB, 7K) and Shiflett (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 4K) combined for 11 strikeouts. Jesiel Moctezuma had the only two Cass base hits. Andrew Purdy (two home runs, one double), Spencer Evans (double), and Ripken West combined for six of the Yellow Jackets’ eight hits and seven RBIs. Calhoun (7-11, 4-3) visits Cass (10-7, 5-2) Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and the three-game series concludes Friday at Calhoun.

Gordon Lee pitcher Bo Rhudy struck out nine and threw a six-inning no-hitter Tuesday night to win at Adairsville, 12-0. Rhudy walked one, facing only one more than the minimum. The Trojans scored a run in the top of the second and added four more in the fifth inning to build a 5-0 lead. Gordon Lee then added seven more runs in the top of the sixth. Gordon Lee produced only five hits but took advantage of nine walks and a pair of hit batsmen. Gordon Lee’s win earned a two-game series split with Adairsville. The Trojans improved to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (9-7, 3-1) travels to LaFayette Thursday and hosts the Ramblers Friday. Both games are 5:55 p.m. starts.

The Woodland High School track and field teams placed fourth Saturday at Rockmart’s seven-team meet. The Lady Cats finished behind Bremen, Villa Rica, and Rockmart. Hiram was fifth followed by Unity Christian School. The Wildcats finished behind Rockmart, Villa Rica, and Bremen. Hiram, Unity Christian School, and Fulton Leadership Academy rounded out the boys’ field. The Cass High School track and field teams both placed second at a six-way meet hosted by Darlington on Thursday, March 23. The Lady Colonels finished second behind Pepperell. Darlington was third followed by Armuchee, Chattooga, and Coosa. Darlington won the boys meet followed by the Colonels. Pepperell was third ahead of Armuchee, Coosa, and Chattooga. The Cartersville High School gymnastics team hosted its final home meet of the season last Saturday with Hurricanes taking the top three spots for All Around in Class 5A and under. The Cartersville team also placed second overall in the four-team event. Cartersville (101.45 points) finished just behind North Oconee with 104.2 points. The Cartersville team also celebrated its two seniors at the meet. Senior Annaston Wilson placed second All Around with a score of 33.1 She placed second in beam with a qualifying score of 8.5. Senior Jayla Byrd was third All Around with a score of 32.85. Byrd was fourth in vault with a qualifying score of 9.0. The lone Canes junior, Karley Garrison, placed first All Around with a 35.50 score. She was first in beam (8.9) and floor (9.1). Garrison was also third in vault with a 9.20. Next for the Purple Hurricanes is a trip to Lovett on Thursday.

Georgia Highlands baseball won one of three home games over the weekend with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College as the two teams split a four-game series during the week, GHC won 4-3 last Tuesday in Tifton and won 16-0 Friday at home but dropped a 10-9 and 8-7 decision in a Saturday doubleheader. Oliver Wood tossed a seven-inning, complete-game shutout on Friday for the Chargers. He scattered four hits and a pair of walks while striking out three. Parker Poteet had three hits including a pair of home runs and three RBIs. Ryan Wideman also had three hits including a solo home run. Hudson Sapp homered twice with four RBIs. Adam Love and Connor Faulkner had two hits each including one double each with one RBI. Zayd Brannigan and Bryson Stripling also homered in the 16-0 win. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, ABAC scored five runs in the top of the seventh for a comeback 10-9 win. Brannigan finished with three hits including a home run and four RBIs. Wideman also added three hits in the loss. In the series finale, the Chargers came from behind to knot the score at 7-7 through seven innings, but the Stallions got a solo home run in the top of the eighth for the deciding run. Sapp homered twice and had three total hits in the loss. Wideman also finished with three hits including a home run and two RBIs. Georgia Highlands (22-10, 2-2 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) plays at East Georgia CC Wednesday afternoon and hosts East Georgia to complete the four-game series Friday and Saturday.
