The Woodland girls' soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss Tuesday night at South Paulding in non-region action. Woodland keeper Abby Duncan had eight saves in net to help keep the Lady Cats in a scoreless tie at the intermission. Reagan Weightman gave Woodland a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute off a corner kick but the Lady Spartans scored twice in the half to escape with a hard-fought win. Peyton Keller played in goal for the Lady Cats in the second half and had six saves. Woodland (1-5-1, 0-1) returns to region play Friday night at Calhoun (6-3, 2-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. SOUTH PAULDING 2, WOODLAND BOYS 0 The host Spartans scored a pair of first half goals and kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard Tuesday night at South Paulding. The Spartans improved to 7-3-1 on the season with their non-region victory. Woodland (3-3-1, 0-1 Region 7-5A) travels to Calhoun for a 7:30 p.m. region start Friday.

Tristan McKibben singled home a run to tie the score 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth and Miles Owen hit a ball that was misplayed in the infield and outfield to score Luke Miller in the bottom of the seventh as the Purple Hurricanes walked off with a 2-1 win Tuesday night over Calhoun at Richard Bell Field. The two key plays produced just enough offense for starting pitcher Caden Carroll who earned a complete-game win on the mound. The Kennesaw State commit allowed just one run on three hits and three walks. He struck out 17. Calhoun scored in the top of the first without benefit of a hit. A walk followed by a stolen base, a wild pitch, and a balk plated the Yellow Jackets only run of the game. Harrison Childers had two hits including one double for the Hurricanes. Isaac McNair-Seigler and Luke Miller also finished with two hits each. McKibbon (RBI) and Daniel (double) had the other Cartersville base hits. Cartersville (9-2, 1-0) and Calhoun (3-9, 0-1) play again Thursday at Calhoun at 5:55 p.m. and will complete the three-game Region 7-5A series Friday back at Richard Bell Field. WOODLAND 16, DALTON 1 The Wildcats took a 4-1 lead in the second inning Tuesday night and coasted to a 16-1 win at Dalton in six innings. Woodland rattled off a dozen hits including five extra-base hits and scored in every offensive frame after the first inning. Meanwhile, Wildcats’ pitchers Rowan Billings (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 5K) and Zach Lambert (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 1K) minimized the Catamounts’ offense. Connor Stermer (3 RBIs), Chase Carson (3 RBIs), and Julian Wright (double, triple, one RBI) had two hits each for Woodland. Ayden Ray (double, 2 RBIs), Jakiyon Porter (RBI), M Williams (triple, RBI), Jack Chatman (RBI), Brett Good, and Billings (double, RBI) added one hit each for the Wildcats. CASS 15, HIRAM 0 Cass senior Carson Hill threw an abbreviated no-hitter at Hiram Tuesday night as the Colonels blanked the Hornets 15-0 in three innings. Hill struck out ten of the eleven batters he faced and issued no walks. One batter reached base on an infield error and one reached base on a dropped third strike. The Colonels offense produced five runs in each of its three frames. Connor Jenkins (double, RBI), Hunter Lovett (2 RBIs), Cayden Roberts (triple, 3 RBIs), Chase Tatum (3 RBIs), and Nic Wright (2 RBIs) all had two hits each. Jesiel Moctezuma (triple, RBI), and Hill added one hit each. Wesley Collins contributed one RBI. The Hornets slipped to 4-5 on the season and 0-1 in Region 7-5A. Georgia Highlands softball split a home doubleheader with visiting East Georgia State Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers won the first game 9-6 but lost the second game, 9-3. Game One saw the Chargers build a 5-0 lead through four innings prior to holding off a late threat by the Bobcats. Malone Aldridge had three hits including a double for Georgia Highlands. Allison Deweese homered twice. Madison Dennis homered and finished with four RBIs. Brady Tharp (2 RBIs), Audrey Johnson, and Abigail Lathrop all had hits in the victory. Jaycie Hand (6 IP, 6R, 3ER, 8H, 3BB, 4K) pitched into the seventh inning and collected the win in the circle. Emma Veitch (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) entered in the final inning and retired the final three outs. In Game Two, Georgia Highlands led 1-0 early and tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but six Bobcat runs over the final two innings put the game away for East Georgia State. Veitch (2.1 IP, 4R, 2ER, 3H, 1BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss in relief of starter Rena Fraga (4 IP, 3R, 0ER, 6H, 0BB, 1K). Hand (0.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 0BB) also pitched for the Chargers. Johnson had two hits including a double for GHC. Deweese (2 RBIs), Tharp, Lathrop, Aldridge, Jordan Blair, and Avery Fisher added one hit each. Dennis contributed one RBI. East Georgia moves to 5-12-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Georgia Highlands (9-15, 3-1) makes a four-game road trip this weekend with two games at South Georgia State Friday afternoon and a pair of games at ABAC on Saturday.

Georgia Highlands baseball was swept in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon by Roane State. The Raiders blasted the Chargers 13-1 in the opening game and came from behind in the second game to edge GHC, 11-10. Roane State pitcher, Blake Medley, limited Georgia Highlands to only two hits in the first game although he issued eight walks. He struck out four while keeping the Chargers off the scoreboard except for a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the second inning. It was a 1-0 game until the Raiders scored eight times in the fifth and added five more runs in the sixth. Roane State had eleven singles and a homer in their two innings of fireworks. They also took advantage of three walks and a hit batsman. Bryson Stripling and Austin Slate had the only Chargers’ base hits in the opening loss. In Game 2, Georgia Highlands led 2-0 through two innings, 6-3 after three innings, and 10-7 through four frames before the Raiders tied the score with three runs in the top of the fifth. Roane State (9-18) took advantage of two walks and a hit batsman in the top of the sixth to score the go-ahead run without a base hit. GHC then managed only one base runner over the final two innings, falling short 11-10. Slate had two more hits for the Chargers as did Jayden Talik (RBI). Connor Faulkner hit a two-run homer in the second and finished with three RBIs. Bryant Herring (2 RBIs), Hudson Sapp, Ryan Wideman (double, RBI), Parker Poteet, and Davis Newman added one hit apiece in the loss. Georgia Highlands (20-8) starts conference play next week with four games against Abraham Baldwin. The Chargers play in Tifton Tuesday and will host three games Friday and Saturday.

The Adairsville boys and girls tennis teams lost Region 6-AAA matches Monday night to visiting Coahulla Creek. The Lady Tigers won two of three singles lines but fell to the Lady Colts 3-2. The Adairsville girls and Cass boys soccer teams collected region wins Monday night. In a battle of Lady Tigers teams, Adairsville outlasted visiting Ringgold 5-4. The Adairsville boys were also in a tight matchup, but Ringgold came away with a shootout win. At Cass, the Colonels scored early and held on to defeat visiting Hiram 1-0 while the Lady Colonels lost 4-2 to the Lady Hornets. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 5, RINGGOLD 4 Lizzie LeMay scored four goals — two in each half — to help lead the Adairsville Lady Tigers to a 5-4 Region 6-AAA win at home Monday night over the Ringgold Tigers. Ringgold scored in the 1st and 13th minutes to take an early 2-0 lead, but a pair of LeMay goals got Adairsville back in the game by the intermission. Gabi Becerra assisted on the first goal in the 18th minute to make the score 2-1. Elle Causby had the assist on the first half equalizer in the 24th minute. The Adairsville girls gained their first lead of the night in the 44th minute when Alivia Joslin scored unassisted. The ball rattled around in the box and Joslin took advantage of a deflection. One minute later, the hosts took a 4-2 lead when Joslin fed LeMay for her third goal of the night. Ringgold cut the Adairsville lead to 4-3 in the 47th minute but LeMay scored an insurance goal in the 77th minute to once again build a two-goal cushion. Her 50-yard run sprinted by the Ringgold defense. Ringgold added a late goal with about two minutes remaining in the game to make it 5-4 but Adairsville held off the visitors the rest of the way. The coaching staff credited Maddie Gossett for her outstanding defensive play and ability to distribute from her position. The Adairsville girls (8-3, 3-0) play a non-region match at Bremen Friday night. RINGGOLD 4, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 3 (shootout) The visiting Ringgold boys led 3-1 at the intermission Monday night, but Adairsville rallied for a pair of goals in the second half to send the game to overtime. Following a pair of scoreless overtime periods, Ringgold captured the region win in a shootout. Ringgold improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (5-6, 2-1) steps out of region play Friday night with a visit to Bremen. CASS BOYS 1, HIRAM 0 The Cass boys controlled play most of the night but had a difficult time finishing scoring chances. Camden Hillhouse scored the game’s only goal in the 7th minute off an assist from Christian Villela. The Colonels improved to 5-6 on the season and 1-0 in Region 7-5A. They return to action next Monday, March 20 at Dalton. HIRAM 4, CASS GIRLS 2 The Cass girls dropped their Region 7-5A opener to visiting Hiram Monday night, 4-2. JAXON SMITH — University of Maryland (R-Fr., Woodland HS) … his third-place finish in the Big Ten Conference Championship in the 197-pound division earned Smith an 11-seed at this week’s NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. With a season record of 21-6, he will square off with Michial Foy of the University of Minnesota in the first round Thursday morning. The tournament runs through Saturday. BASKETBALL DiANTHONY HEATHCOCK — Columbia International University (Jr., Woodland HS) … the Rams lost their first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance last Tuesday falling to No. 1-seed Grace College (Indiana) at Winona Lake 101-72. Heathcock scored 17 points with eight rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot, and one steal as CIU finished the year with an 18-14 record and an Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament championship. Heathcock led the Rams in scoring (15.5 ppg), rebounds (8.5 rpg), blocked shots (27), free throws attempted (106), and field goals made (194). T.J. HORTON — Georgia Highlands CC (So., Cartersville HS) … playing in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association championship tournament last week, the Chargers beat Gordon State and Central Georgia Tech but lost to South Georgia State CC in the finals, 76-72. Horton started all three games and totaled 31 points, 16 rebounds, six steals, and five assists in the tournament. The Chargers did not receive an at-large berth to the NJCAA National Championship and finished their season with a 23-10 record. KEARA McDANIEL — Toccoa Falls College (Fr., Cass HS) … in the Screaming Eagles’ National Christian College Athletic Association D-II National Tournament games in Joplin, Missouri, McDaniel scored two points and had one steal in a 78-50 loss to Arlington Baptist University (Texas). McDaniel also scored two points and had two rebounds in a 59-57 loss to Ozark Christian College. Toccoa Falls finished the season with a 20-10 mark. JAYLON PUGH — Lander University (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … scored three points and had a pair of rebounds in the Bearcats’ 76-63 loss to Lincoln Memorial University in the opening round of the NCAA D-II National Tournament at Augusta University. Lander finished the season with a 22-10 mark. Pugh, who began his career at Furman University, appeared in 32 games this season making eight starts. He averaged 7.2 points and 2.5 rebounds with 43 assists and 19 steals. SOFTBALL LAINEY BAKER — Samford University (Fr., Woodland HS) … made a two-inning appearance Saturday facing a dozen batters in a 10-1 loss to Western Michigan at the Jacksonville State Invitational. SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (So., Woodland HS) … entered in the second inning in relief and finished the final 7-⅓ innings last Saturday in a 10-8 loss to Calvin University. Smith was inserted with the Scots trailing 7-3. He allowed two runs on two hits, two walks, and one hit batsman. Covenant salvaged the final game of a three-game series with the Knights Saturday afternoon. DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham-Southern College (So., Cartersville HS) … made a three-inning, no-decision start last Friday in a game the Panthers came from behind to win 12-8. Williams yielded eight runs (only one earned) on eight hits with no walks and one strikeout. The Panthers went 4-0 for the week and pushed their current winning streak to 15 games. BSC (17-1, 3-0 Southern Athletic Association) will host Piedmont University Wednesday and play a three-game conference series at Berry College Friday and Saturday. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 6-for-17 at the plate as the Jaguars enjoyed a 4-0 week with two home wins over The College of Saint Rose (New York) and a pair of wins at Claflin University (South Carolina). Wilkie’s week included one double, two hit by pitch, and five runs scored with four RBIs. Augusta (9-10, 5-6 Peach Belt Conference) wraps up a conference series at Claflin Monday, hosts Coker University Wednesday, and makes the short trip to Milledgeville Friday through Sunday for a three-game PBC series with Georgia College. ZACH WILSON — Penn State University - Greater Allegheny (Jr., Woodland HS) … started four games and appeared in five of seven games last week as PSUGA went 4-3. The losses were to Bryant & Stratton (Ohio), Penn State-Schuylkill, and Penn State-Hazleton. The wins were over St. Clair CC twice, Bryant & Stratton, and Nassau CC. Wilson was 1-for-8 with three walks, two runs scored, and two RBIs. PSU-Greater Allegheny plays at Butler County CC Wednesday and hosts a three-game series with Miami University-Hamilton (Ohio) Saturday and Sunday.

The Cartersville High School gymnastics team hosted their second meet of the season Saturday at the Twisters Gymnastics Center. The meet was won by Cambridge High School with 105.9 points. Cartersville senior Annaston Wilson had a fourth place all around in Class 5A and under and was fourth for floor exercise with a score of 8.7. Canes’ junior Karley Garrison placed third in all-around among all competitors and was second all around in the Class 5A and under division. Garrison was third in floor, beam, and vault with scores of 8.8, 8.7, and 9.2. She was also first in bars with an 8.6 in the 5A division. She now has a second all around state qualifying score along with event qualifying scores in vault, beam, and bar. The Cartersville team will host another home meet Saturday, March 25.

The Georgia Highlands Chargers softball team swept a home, conference doubleheader over Andrew College Saturday and extended its current win streak to six games. The Chargers topped the Tigers 8-6 in Saturday’s first game and pulled out a 14-13 extra inning win in Game 2. Jaycie Hand (8 IP, 3K), Emma Veitch (5 IP, 3K), and Rena Fraga (2 IP) shared the pitching responsibilities in the doubleheader. Audrey Johnson had six hits on the day including a pair of doubles, two home runs, and seven RBIs. Malone Aldridge followed with a five-hit day that included a double. Allison Deweese homered three times and finished with seven RBIs. Brady Tharp finished with three hits including a walk-off homer in the second game, a double, and three RBIs while Madison Dennis drove in a pair of runs with her three hits on the day. Georgia Highlands (8-14, 2-0 GCAA) has another home, conference doubleheader Tuesday with East Georgia State CC. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Georgia Highlands baseball completed a four-game weekend sweep of visiting Macomb College (Michigan) Saturday with a pair of wins over the Monarchs at Pickens High School in Jasper. The Chargers, who won 11-1 and 13-1 on Friday, won 10-0 and 7-5 Saturday to complete the sweep. Four GHC pitchers combined for the opening game shutout Saturday. Trippe Moore (4 IP, 0R, 3H, 0BB, 6K), Barrett Eldridge (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K), Cason Rich (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K), and Skyler Thellman (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB) all pitched in the shutout. Austin Slate (double, 2 RBIs), Ryan Wideman, Jay Murdock (double), and CJ Blackwell had two hits each for Georgia Highlands. Hudson Sapp (triple, RBI) and Nic Ferrer (RBI) added one hit each. Chris Buchanan had one RBI. Macomb led early in the second game 2-0 and held a 5-3 lead through 4-½ innings, but the Chargers completed a come-from-behind victory with four runs over their last two offensive frames. Georgia Highlands utilized five more pitchers in the second game. Trip DoVale (3 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1K), Ryan Wells (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB), Adrian Roman (1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H), Declan Dun (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB), and Chandler Anderson (1 IP, 0R, 1H) all toed the rubber for the Chargers. Wideman (triple, 2 RBIs), Connor Faulkner (2 RBIs), and Slate led the GHC attack with two hits each. Sapp hit a solo home run to lead off the Chargers’ third inning. Ferrer and Blackwell added one hit apiece. With their losses Saturday, Macomb falls to 1-7 on the season. Georgia Highlands (20-6) has won 11 of their last 13 games. The Chargers have a doubleheader Monday at Point University and host Roane State for a doubleheader Tuesday.
