Cartersville baseball built a 7-0 lead heading into Woodland’s final offensive frame and held on to defeat the Wildcats Tuesday night at Woodland, 7-4. Woodland took advantage of a hit batsman, an outfield error, an infield error, two singles and a double in the bottom of the seventh to score four runs. Geoffrey Gore was brought in to pitch for the Canes in the inning and ended the threat with a groundout and a strikeout. The Hurricanes built their lead with a run in the first, three more in the fourth, and single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Jake Brasfield (triple, 2 RBIs), Curt Bonner (two doubles, one RBI), and Jacob Ray had two hits each for Cartersville. ADAIRSVILLE 16, NORTH MURRAY 3 The Adairsville Tigers improved to 2-0 in Region 6-AAA Tuesday night with a 16-3 win and a two-game season sweep of the North Murray Mountaineers in Chatsworth. Adairsville actually trailed 2-1 through three innings, but compiled 15 runs over their final four offensive frames to pull away with the win. The Mountaineers also contributed to the onslaught by committing six errors in the contest. Tyler Driggers had three hits including a solo home run in the fifth inning, a grand slam in the sixth inning, and seven RBIs to lead the Tigers offense. Chris Roper followed with two hits and one RBI. Peyton Bowen finished with a double and two RBIs. Braden Powell (2 RBIs), Jack Whitley (double, RBI), Evan Sanders (RBI), Dawson Craig, and Brenden Carroll (double) added one hit apiece. Carroll (4.2 IP, 3ER, 6H, 2BB, 2K) pitched into the fifth inning to collect the Tigers’ win on the mound. Jack Nelson (2.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 5K) closed out the final seven outs. Adairsville (7-4, 2-0) hosts Murray County Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and will play the Indians in Chatsworth Friday at 5:55 p.m. BLESSED TRINITY 11, CASS 3 The 6th-ranked Blessed Trinity Titans needed only five hits, but took advantage of eight walks and three Colonels’ errors to win at Cass Tuesday night, 11-3. Blessed Trinity scored seven runs in the top of the second inning to take an early commanding lead. Cass narrowed the margin to 7-3 in the bottom of the third, but the visiting Titans added a run to their lead in the fourth and posted three more insurance runs in the seventh for an eight-run victory. Hayden Cole led off the Colonels’ third inning with a double. Devan Hutchinson drove in the first Cass run later in the inning with a groundout and Aidan Larkin hit a two-run home run after Jesiel Moctezuma reached on an error. Blessed Trinity pitchers Jake Lankie and Carson Taggart combined to limit the Colonels to only two hits. Lankie struck out nine in five innings. All six outs recorded by Taggart were by strikeout. Chase Botts (2 IP, 7R, 5ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K) started on the mound for Cass and suffered the pitching loss. The Cartersville riflery team produced one of its best scores of the season in the state playoffs, but it wasn't enough to keep the Canes' post-season alive. The Canes Rifles lost 1148-1084 at Ware County after earning the state playoff berth with a fifth-place finish in the Area 10 championship. Cartersville junior Angelina Christ fired a season best 279 to lead Cartersville, but the Gators had all five shooters finish with scores between 284 and 292. Caleb Adams (273), Katerina Conley (268), Luis Rangel (265) and Kaleb Wolfe (260) rounded out the top-five finishers for the Canes.

The Woodland High School girls and boys track and field teams competed along with 31 other schools Saturday at the 25th annual Roswell Rotary Relays. Woodland had top ten finishes in six different events during the event at Roswell High School. Noah Baer finished seventh in pole vault (12-6) Boys 4x1600 meter relay team finished seventh (19:15.41) Boys 4x800 meter relay team finished seventh (8:39.37) Girls 4x1600 meter relay team finished eighth (24:01.93) Boys 4x400 meter relay team finished tenth (3:39.17) Girls 4x800 meter relay team finished tenth (10:51.06) The next meet on the Woodland schedule is the Bartow County Championships at Adairsville High School March 31.

Adairsville and North Murray swapped the lead Saturday afternoon and runs were at a premium, but the hosting Tigers took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning and made it stand up to start Region 6-AAA play with a win. North Murray scored a run in the top of the first inning on an error and an RBI single. Adairsville then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Dawson Craig and an outfield error by the Mountaineers. North Murray tied the score 2-2 in the top of the third. The Mountaineers had a baserunner reach on an error and Daniel Skojac drove in the runner with a double into centerfield. Adairsville got the game-winning run, however, in the bottom of the fourth. Brendan Carroll singled, moved to second on a Braden Powell sacrifice, and scored on an RBI hit by Jack Whitley. North Murray (4-9, 0-3) loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning, but Adairsville starting pitcher Evan Sanders got out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout. Sanders surrendered just two unearned runs in five innings. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out five. Jack Whitley retired the final six outs for the Tigers allowing no hits or walks and he struck out three. Five Tigers finished with one hit each. Peyton Bowen doubled. The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams collected important and hard-fought Region 7-5A wins Friday night at Woodland. The Lady Canes came from behind to beat the Lady Cats 3-2 and the Hurricanes scored a pair of goals in each half to top the Wildcats, 4-1. Three consecutive goals in the second half by Abbey Craig (penalty kick), Macy Nicklas (free kick), and Craig again off an assist from Hattie Williams overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to lift the Lady Canes. Woodland (5-6-2, 1-3) scored again late but failed to find the tying goal. The Lady Cats host Cass next Friday at 5:30 p.m. in another region tilt. Cartersville (5-7-1, 3-1) secured a state tournament berth and at least a top-three seed. The Lady Canes play Bremen at home Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and finish region play at home next Friday against Calhoun. In the boys matchup, Cartersville posted two goals by Hector Galaviz in the first half and two more in the second half by Melvin Velasquez to secure the win over Woodland. Velasquez assisted on the second Galaviz goal. Alex Rios had an assist on the first Velasquez goal of the second half. The Canes (7-6-1, 2-2) host a non-region match with Bremen Monday at 7:30 p.m. and will close out region play next Friday at home against Calhoun at 7 p.m. Woodland (5-5-3, 1-3) hosts Cass to wrap up region play next Friday night. The Cass Colonels swept a region doubleheader with Hiram Thursday night at LakePoint to complete a three-game season sweep of the Hornets in Region 7-5A play. The Colonels won the opening game 4-0 and took the second game Thursday, 11-4, and defeating Hiram 7-1 on Tuesday. Pitchers Cayden Roberts and Aidan Larkin combined on a one-hitter in Game 1. Roberts did not allow a hit in six innings and struck out two. Larkin surrendered a leadoff single in the seventh inning, but struck out two and preserved the shutout. Cass grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The big blows in the inning included a double by Bentley Markley and a triple off the bat of Larkin. Carson Hill drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly. Larkin tripled again in the third inning and scored on a Roberts groundout. Thursday, Cartersville tennis completed a match against Calhoun and swept a region match with Cass. The match with Calhoun was continued from suspended action on Wednesday. The Cartersville girls defeated Calhoun 3-2 and Cass 5-0. The Cartersville boys dropped a 3-2 decision to Calhoun but blanked Cass, 5-0. The Woodland High School tennis teams dropped Region 7-5A matches at home against Calhoun Thursday with the Lady Cats falling 5-0 and the Woodland boys losing by a 4-1 score. Georgia Highlands softball dropped both games of a home, non-conference doubleheader Thursday at Stars Field. The Chargers lost 9-0 and 11-1 to the Wallace State Lions. Wallace State completed a four-game season series sweep over the Chargers and the Lions, ranked 2nd nationally in the NJCAA DI polls, improved to 28-0 on the season. Wallace State utilized four different pitchers on the day and limited Georgia Highlands to only four hits total in the two games. The Lions’ hurlers combined for 16 strikeouts in the doubleheader. The only Georgia Highlands run of the day came on a solo home run by Allison Deweese in the second game. Madison Dennis had the Chargers only hit in the opener. Annsley Todd added a base hit in Game 2. Georgia Highlands (6-18) travels to Roane State next Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader and begins conference play next weekend with doubleheaders at South Georgia State Friday and at Abraham Baldwin Saturday.
