The Cass High basketball teams earned a pair of non-region wins Monday night in Atlanta at Riverwood. The Lady Colonels cruised to a 62-32 win over the Lady Raiders and the Cass boys used a strong defensive fourth quarter to down the Raiders 82-73. CASS GIRLS 62, RIVERWOOD 32 Claire Davis scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds Monday night at Riverwood to help lead the Lady Colonels to a 62-32 win. Cass led 15-4 after one quarter and carried a 31-18 lead to the intermission on their way to a 30-point win. Keara McDaniel scored nine points for the Lady Colonels. Miya Winston followed with seven points, four assists, and three steals. Haley Johnson finished with six points and five assists. Justice Bennett scored four points and contributed 14 rebounds. Mikaela Jackson, Zion Hayes, Kiana McDaniel, and Darianna Sosa all scored three points apiece. Hannah McConnell led the Lady Raiders with 11 points. The Cass girls (7-1, ranked 10th in Class 5A) head to the Carroll County Christmas Tournament starting Thursday at Temple High School. The Lady Colonels open the three day tournament against Pebblebrook at 4 p.m. CASS BOYS 82, RIVERWOOD 73 The Colonels earned a hard-fought road win Monday night at Riverwood in Atlanta, 82-73. In a back-and-forth struggle, Cass led 20-18 after one quarter and went to the intermission knotted at 37 with the Raiders. Riverwood moved ahead 62-60 by the end of the third quarter but Cass outscored the Raiders 22-11 in the final eight minutes to ease away with a nine-point win. “We played solid defense down the stretch tonight,” said Cass coach Byron Taylor. “We made some key stops and used those stops to score in transition. It was absolutely a team win.” Ethan McIntyre led four Colonels in double-figure scoring with 19 points. Jackson Hale scored 16. Jelani Hames produced 14 points and Jayden Foster contributed 12. Kaden Baldwin followed with eight points. Sacovie White scored seven. Devin Henderson finished with four points and Jashaun Whatley added two points for Cass. Karris Bilal scored a game-high 32 points for Riverwood. Jalen Leonard added 24 for the Raiders (1-7). Next up for the Colonels will be the Lemon Street Classic which starts Saturday at Marietta High School. Cass (4-5) is scheduled to face St. Anne-Pacelli of Columbus in a 12:45 p.m. tip.

The Adairsville wrestling team finished 4-1 at the Pepperell Dragon Duals this past Saturday. The Tigers had wins over Cedartown, Pickens, Holy Innocents’ and North Murray during the day. The team’s only loss came by six points to Dade County. Jaxson Owens finished the day unbeaten for Adairsville. Next for the Tigers is a quad meet at Gilmer County with Cass and Northwest Whitfield. Adairsville will also be in action Friday and Saturday at the Clash at Coahulla Creek Duals.

The Cass boys basketball team snapped a four game losing streak Friday night with a 64-61 non-region win at Douglas County. Izayah Porter of Douglas County scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Tigers. Jelani Hames and Jayden Foster of Cass scored 16 points each. The Colonels improved to 3-4 with their win. Douglas County remains winless at 0-6. Cass plays Paideia Saturday at 3 p.m. on a neutral floor at Tri-Cities High School. BREMEN 46, WOODLAND GIRLS 40 The Lady Cats trailed 25-14 at halftime and failed to make up the difference in the second half Friday night in a 46-40 non-region loss at Bremen. Alli Augustin led the host Blue Devils (6-2) with 16 points. Abigail Taylor scored 22 and Megan Schultz added 10 points for Woodland. Next for the Lady Cats (1-7) is a first round game against Chattooga Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Rome Holiday Tournament. BREMEN 66, WOODLAND BOYS 58 The Woodland boys slipped to 3-3 on the season while Bremen improved to 2-3 as the Blue Devils topped the visiting Wildcats Friday night 66-58. The Wildcats host Pepperell Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

The Cass wrestling team finished second and Cartersville was 12th Saturday at the 22-team McCallie Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Tennessee. Woodward Academy won the tournament with 258.5 points. Cass finished 26 points behind. Vestavia Hills (Alabama) finished third with Pope of Cobb County and Brentwood (Tennessee) rounding out the top five. Excel Christian Academy completed a two-game, regular season sweep of Cornerstone Prep Academy Saturday evening in Acworth with a 50-47 road win. The Eagles trailed 47-43 when Jakaden Barkley knocked down a three-point shot with nine seconds remaining. A deflected inbound pass resulted in a held ball and an Excel possession with just 0:06 left in regulation. Excel’s Elijah Payne received a pass in the lane and scored to give the Eagles the lead before an ensuing Cornerstone turnover put the host Cougars in a fouling situation. Payne sealed the victory for Excel at the free throw line. Excel had edged Cornerstone November 22 in overtime, 79-74. Saturday’s game was again close throughout. The Eagles led 11-8 after one quarter but trailed 22-21 at the intermission. Excel held a 30-29 advantage going into the final period. Barkley and Payne led the Eagles’ scoring attack with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Jacob Taylor followed with 10. Camari Nettles finished with seven points and Trey Webb added four for Excel. Devon Sweat paced Cornerstone Prep (4-6) with 19 points. Timothy Greene scored 14 and Jonathan Everill added 11 points for the Cougars. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 73, SONORAVILLE 58 The Adairsville boys started slowly Saturday night in their home opener, but a strong third quarter lifted the Tigers to a 73-58 Region 6-AAA win over Sonoraville. Adairsville led 15-11 after the opening eight minutes and led 21-19 at halftime before outscoring the Phoenix 32-21 in the third quarter to take control. T.J. Printup scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Tigers. Tre Winters followed with 15. Zac Postell scored eight points. Tre Mitchell contributed seven. Zach Weaver and Hayden Poarch added six points apiece for Adairsville. Ethan Hibberts led Sonoraville with 18 points. Jaxon Pate and Donovan McDaniel scored 14 each for the Phoenix (1-6, 0-3). Adairsville (4-0, 3-0) hosts LaFayette Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 49, SONORAVILLE 48 Visiting Sonoraville had multiple shots in the final seconds but the Adairsville girls held on for a 49-48 Region 6-AAA victory at home Saturday night. The Lady Tigers led 19-10 at the end of the first quarter but the Phoenix grabbed a 31-29 lead going into halftime. Adairsville regained the lead in the third quarter taking a 39-37 advantage to the final eight minutes. Lexie Childers scored a game-high 16 points to lead Adairsville. Autumn Henderson scored nine. Haley Stiles and Ya’Torrean Hale followed with seven each. Alissa Winters contributed six points while Makayla Wade and Naxyria Roberts added three and one point, respectively. Kayleigh Kelley led Sonoraville (4-4, 1-2) with 11 points. Adairsville (5-2, 1-3) entertains LaFayette Tuesday night starting at 6 p.m. PAIDEIA 55, CASS BOYS 40 A day after snapping a four-game losing streak, the Cass Colonels dropped a non-region game to the Paideia Pythons, 55-40, at Tri-Cities High School in Atlanta. Paideia, a Class A private program, evened its season record at 5-5 with the win. Cass (3-5) plays at Riverwood in Atlanta Monday night at 7:30 p.m. No game report was provided for this game.

The Cass swimming teams finished third Thursday night at the Darlington meet in Rome. Darlington won the combined team scores competition with 260 points, followed by Coahulla Creek (114), Cass (96), and Southeast Whitfield (54). Cass was second in the boys competition with 66 points and third in the girls competition with 30 points. Complete results below:

The Excel Christian Academy Eagles sprinted to a 29-6 first quarter lead and never looked back in an 84-37 win Thursday night over Harvest Baptist Academy at the Church at Liberty Square. Excel led 49-18 at halftime and built a 69-29 lead by the end of the third quarter en route to a 47-point win. Jakaden Barkley scored a game-high 28 points for ECA. Jacob Taylor followed with 23 points. Elijah Payne contributed 18. Comari Nettles finished with 10 and Trey Webb added five for the Eagles. Matthew Simon led the visiting Warriors with 17 points. Chase McCown scored 11 for Harvest. Excel (4-2) plays at Cornerstone Prep Academy Saturday at 4 p.m.

The GHSA Reclassification Committee met on Wednesday, Dec. 8 in the GHSA office in Thomaston to hear appeals of classification placement from schools in Classes A, 2A & 3A. The higher classifications -- Class 4A and above -- were not altered. The results created a new-look region for Adairsville in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years.

The Cass High School swimming teams edged Cartersville Tuesday night at the Adairsville High School Aquatics Center, 65-64. The narrow difference in total scores was not the case for each gender. The Cass boys outscored the Hurricanes 54-7 while the Cartersville girls outscored the Lady Colonels 57-11. Complete event results are shown below:

The Cass girls and the Adairsville boys picked up basketball wins on the road Tuesday night while the Woodland girls collected their first win of the year hosting Temple. The Lady Colonels won at Heritage-Conyers 44-39 while the Adairsville boys won at Ringgold in Region 6-AAA action, 61-46. The Woodland girls went scoreless in the third quarter, but held on to edge Temple, 23-21. The Adairsville girls lost a nail-biter at Ringgold, 40-39, while the Cass boys lost at Heritage 65-56 and the Woodland boys were topped by visiting Temple 56-49. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 61, RINGGOLD 46 Outscoring Ringgold 15-7 in the third quarter and 31-14 in the second half lifted the Adairsville boys to a 15-point win on the road Tuesday night, 61-46. T.J. Printup scored 22 points and Hayden Poarch poured in 20 to help lead the Adairsville offense. Zac Postell finished with seven points while Tre Winters and Kavi Harris added five points each. Adairsville coach Alex Disbrow credited the second half defensive effort of his team for the come-from-behind victory. Cooper Sexton led Ringgold with 15 points. O’Reilly Matthews added 11 for the hosts who dropped to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (3-0, 2-0) entertains Sonoraville Saturday night. RINGGOLD 40, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 39 The Adairsville Lady Tigers held leads at the end of each of the first three quarters Tuesday night at Ringgold, but couldn’t hold on in a 40-39 region loss. Rachel Lopez, who knocked down three, 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, led Ringgold and all scorers in the game with 18 points. Addie Broome added eight for Ringgold (6-0, 2-0). Lexie Childers paced Adairsville with 16 points. Haley Stiles and Ya’Torrean Hale followed with seven and five points, respectively. Adairsville (4-2, 0-2) has a home region game with Sonoraville Saturday night. CASS GIRLS 44, HERITAGE-CONYERS 39 The Cass Lady Colonels led at each quarter stop Tuesday night and held on down the stretch to defeat the Heritage Lady Eagles in Conyers, 44-39. Claire Davis had 12 points for Cass. Mikaela Jackson scored nine. Keara McDaniel and Miya Winston followed with eight points each. Zion Hayes chipped in three. Amaya Ford and Haley Johnson added two points each. Heritage (1-7) was led by Jaliya Weekes with 19 points and Morgan Snipes with 13. Cass (6-1) plays at Riverwood in Atlanta next Monday night at 6 p.m. HERITAGE-CONYERS 65, CASS BOYS 56 The Cass boys kept pace with Heritage Tuesday night, but couldn’t get over the hump in a 65-56 road loss. The host Eagles led Cass 16-12 after one quarter; 32-26 at halftime; and 51-44 through three quarters in an eventual nine-point win in Conyers. Heritage (7-1) was led by Jacob Wilkins with 22 points and Jalen Boston with 15. Jelani Hames and Ethan McIntyre paced the Colonels with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Jackson Hale scored nine. Kaden Baldwin contributed seven while Sacovie White and Devin Henderson added six points each. The Colonels (2-4) play at Douglas County Friday night and have a game Saturday afternoon at Tri-Cities High School against Paideia. WOODLAND GIRLS 23, TEMPLE 21 The Woodland Lady Cats picked up their first win of the 2021-22 season Tuesday night at home holding off Temple, 23-21. Woodland led 17-6 at halftime, but went scoreless in the third quarter allowing the visiting Tigers to pull within five at 17-12. Temple even took a brief lead in the fourth quarter, but Woodland recovered late for a two-point victory. Abigail Taylor led Woodland with nine points. Dylynn Motes, Bailee Motes, and Megan Schultz added four points each for the Lady Cats. Jayda Smith scored 16 points to lead the Tigers (2-3). Woodland (1-6) plays at Bremen Friday night. TEMPLE 56, WOODLAND BOYS 49 The visiting Temple Tigers put three players in double figures Tuesday night and remained unbeaten on the season with a 56-49 non-region win at Woodland. Temple led 31-26 at the intermission and extended the lead to 43-33 by the end of the third quarter before holding on for a seven-point win. Jikorian Boykin led Temple with 12 points followed by Shemar Wicker and Aman Jackson with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Woodland was led by Diaz Garrett with 17 points. Brelace Williams scored 11. Jayden Hames pitched in eight points. Harlin Morris contributed six and Zyon Heath added five for the Wildcats. Temple improved to 4-0 with the win. Woodland (3-2) plays at Bremen Friday night.

Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars dropped their third consecutive game Sunday, falling at the Los Angeles Rams 37-7. EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … was an active participant in Wake’s 45-21 ACC Championship Game loss to Pittsburgh Saturday night but did not make the stat sheet. BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905 (NBA G-League; Cartersville native) … the former Kentucky Wildcat who played his high school hoops at Newton High School in Covington, came off the Raptors’ bench Saturday in a 128-109 loss to the Capital City Go Go to score four points with two rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a blocked shot in 24 minutes of playing time. In a rematch with Capital City Monday morning, the Go Go led 20-0 early before Hagans scored 10 points with four assists and three steals in a Raptors 120-113 come-from-behind win. Raptors 905 is now 4-4 in the NBA-G League’s East Division. They host games with the Maine Celtics Thursday night and Saturday afternoon. JUSTICE HAYES — South Georgia Tech (So., Cass HS) … in a pair of losses last week, Hayes totaled nine points, with four assists, two blocked shots, and one rebound. The Jets dropped games to Gulf Coast State College and at Chipola College. South Georgia Tech (6-5) has a rematch with Gulf Coast State Thursday and meets Florida Southwestern State at Panama City Friday. DiANTHONY HEATHCOCK — Columbia International University (So., Woodland HS) … scored 12 points with six rebounds and a pair of steals last Wednesday in a 92-79 home win over Milligan. Saturday afternoon, he grabbed five rebounds and scored four points in a 62-61 loss at Tennessee Wesleyan. The Rams (6-4) have an exhibition Tuesday night at D-I Campbell University and travel to Marietta to challenge Life University this Saturday afternoon. T.J. HORTON — Georgia Highlands College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … scored five points with two rebounds and a pair of assists last Friday during a 74-58 loss at Chipola College. He came off the bench Saturday to score 10 points in a 78-76 loss at Gulf Coast State. Horton also had three rebounds, two assists, and a steal in the loss Saturday. The Chargers (4-6) host Middle Georgia Prep Wednesday. JOSIE SUMMERVILLE — North Park University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … played 21 minutes, grabbed six rebounds with one assist and one steal this past Saturday afternoon as the Vikings defeated Chicago University 73-64 for their fifth straight victory. NPU (6-1) hosts Carthage College Wednesday night and Elmhurst University Saturday afternoon. NAKIYAH WASHINGTON — Piedmont College (Jr., Adairsville HS) … scored nine points while collecting four rebounds with one assist, one steal, and one blocked shot as the Lions won at Huntingdon College 59-53 this past Saturday afternoon. Piedmont (5-2, 1-0 USA South Athletic Conference) has home games Tuesday against Maryville College (Tennessee) and Saturday vs. Berea College (Kentucky).

The Woodland High School wrestling team was a perfect 5-0 Saturday at the Mountain View Duals in Lawrenceville. The Wildcats had wins over Mountain View, Thompson, North Forsyth, Valdosta, and Etowah to sweep the field. Unbeaten individuals for Woodland included Hayden Santora (120 pounds), Caleb Henson (160), Cole Cochran (170), Jeremiah Rhodes (195), and Beau Jernigan (285). The next tournament for the Wildcats will be the Cleveland (Tennessee) Duals this Saturday.
