Cartersville High School's volleyball coach Alicen Pearson has been named the Region 7-AAAAA Coach of the Year. The announcement was made at last week's region tournament. In her second season with the Purple Hurricanes, Pearson has led Cartersville to a region runner-up finish and a state tournament opening round win over Northview. Cartersville travels to Veterans -- just south of Warner Robins -- Saturday for the state tournament's second round. "It meant a lot to me," Pearson said of the honor after the Northview match. "I've worked a lot over the past few years, and I feel like I'm in a spot where I'm actually able to show them a lot more than I used to — compared to the beginning of my coaching career. "To see my peers vote on me and see that in me was really inspiring, and I appreciate it a lot." In her first season leading the Canes, Pearson — a Sandy Creek graduate and former head coach at Cass — also guided Cartersville to the second round after earning a No. 3 seed for the state tourney and winning a road match over Villa Rica. Three Cartersville players were all-region selections. Senior London Moultrie, junior Lauren Lawson and junior Mia Nicklas received those honors. Woodland senior Delaney Tuplin was an all-region selection along with Cass senior Bailey Elrod. Blessed Trinity, the regular-season and tournament champion in Region 7-AAAAA, collected four all-region selections including player of the year honors for Cate Wright.

The Adairsville volleyball team had its season come to a close Tuesday night with a straight sets loss at Oconee County in the opening round of the Class 3A state playoffs. Oconee County (40-6) won the best-of-five match 25-10, 25-18, and 25-20. Richlyn Blair and Autumn Henderson led Adairsville in kills with six and five, respectively. Haley Stiles finished with a pair of blocks. Annie McCormick and Lexie Childers contributed seven assists each and Madison Flemons had a team-high 11 digs. The Lady Tigers’ season closes with a 24-16-1 record. WOODLAND VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO TOP-RANKED ST. PIUS X The Woodland volleyball team was eliminated in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs Tuesday night in DeKalb County by top-ranked St. Pius X 25-3, 25-5, 25-6. The loss ends the Wildcats season after qualifying for the state playoffs two years in a row.

The wait is finally over. Cartersville High product Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars finally earned their first win of the season, and all they had to do was leave North America to accomplish the feat. Lawrence, who picked up his first NFL victory in the process, guided the Jaguars to a comeback win over the Miami Dolphins Sunday in London. Jacksonville snapped the second-longest losing streak in NFL history. The Jaguars' most recent win had occurred in Week 1 of the 2020 season. Following a bye week, Jacksonville will head to Seattle in hopes of beginning a winning streak. PRO FOOTBALL Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars; Cartersville) — Lawrence threw for 319 yards, while completing 25 of 41 pass attempts. Seven of his completions went for 20-plus yards, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones late in the first half. That proved to be Lawrence's only score, and while he did lose a fumble, it didn't end up costing the Jaguars, as the defense intercepted the ball right back. The former Clemson star led a pair of late drives that ended in the game-tying and winning field goals. The latter drive included a nifty 9-yard completion to Laviska Shenault on a fourth-and-8 play with 5 seconds left. After calling timeout with just one tick left, Jacksonville's Matthew Wright drilled his second field goal of 50-plus yards in the final 5 minutes to earn the walk-off win. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Terry Berdin (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville) — Berdin rushed twice for 5 total yards in a 41-0 shellacking of Point Saturday in Valley, Alabama. Chris Blackston (West Georgia Sr., Adairsville) — Blackston matched his season-high with five tackles in a 30-26 upset of top-ranked West Florida Saturday in Pensacola. West Georgia (6-1, 4-1 in GSC) ascended to the No. 4 spot in the Division-II rankings after the win. Bryce Burgess (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville) — Burgess carried the ball once for 2 yards in the resounding win. Zay Jackson (Missouri Baptist Fr., Cass) — Jackson wound up with two tackles in a 31-16 home loss to Saint Xavier Saturday in St. Louis. Manny Jones (Colorado State Grad Student, Woodland) — Jones produced five tackles, including three solo, in a 36-7 triumph Saturday at New Mexico. Titus Jones (Colorado State R-So., Woodland) — Jones was listed as a participant for the Rams, who moved to 3-3 on the year and 2-0 in the Mountain West with the win. Bradley Kirk (Shorter Sr., Cartersville) — Kirk was included on the participation report but didn't record any stats in a 20-7 home loss to Mississippi College Saturday at Barron Stadium. Jacob Potter (Kennesaw State Sr., Adairsville) — The Owls long snapper assisted in helping KSU down North Carolina A&T by a 14-0 margin Saturday in Kennesaw. John Scifers (Incarnate Word Grad Student, Woodland) — Scifers attempted seven kickoffs in a 38-21 victory over Nicholls State Saturday at home. Three of the kickoffs went for touchbacks. However, two of them went out of bounds. Courtney Slocum (Mars Hill Fr., Adairsville) — Slocum participated in a 32-3 road victory over Limestone Saturday in Gaffney, South Carolina. Matthew Surrett (Olivet Nazarene Fr., Cartersville) — The Tigers offensive lineman helped Olivet Nazarene hold a slight edge in yards, but visiting St. Ambrose wound up with a 17-10 win Saturday. Bryce Wilkins (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville) — The Eagles' staring guard helped pave the way for an offense that accumulated 328 yards on the ground. CROSS COUNTRY McKenna Trapheagen (Georgia Tech So., Woodland) — Trapheagen finished 77th — eighth on the Yellow Jackets, who placed second — during the Penn State National Open Friday in University Park. GOLF Buck Brumlow (Georgia Fr., Cartersville) — Brumlow and the Georgia golf team closed out the SEC Match Play Championship with a consolation match victory over LSU last Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama. Brumlow wrapped up a solid display with a 2-up victory over Trey Winstead, improving to 3-1 in the event. SOCCER Courtney Rhea (Berry College Sr., Cartersville) — Rhea played 17 minutes off the bench but didn't record any stats in a 1-0 win over Millsaps Sunday at home. Russell Shealy (Syracuse R-Jr., Cartersville native) — Shealy, his side's starting goalkeeper, and Syracuse fell 1-0 to Boston College in a game the Orange dominated but couldn't find the back of the net. The Eagles scored with their only shot on goal in their home win Friday. Madison Shook (Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Fr., Cass) — Shook started but didn't record any stats in a pair of losses last week. ABAC fell to Georgia Military 2-1 last Tuesday and dropped a 3-0 decision to Georgia State Saturday.

Cartersville volleyball defeated visiting Northview Tuesday night in straight sets to advance to the Class 5A second round of the state playoffs. The Lady Canes won 25-12, 25-15, and 25-20. Ailee England paced Cartersville with 18 kills and 5 service aces. Layne Condra and Grace Merritt finished with 12 and 11 digs, respectively while Lily Gochee added 33 assists. Cartersville advances to play at Region 1-AAAAA champion Veterans Saturday.

The Woodland softball team punched its ticket to the Elite Eight Tournament of the Class 5A playoffs Tuesday night with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Wayne County. The sweep, with Woodland winning 7-4 and 18-6, secured their second round, best-of-three series win over the Yellow Jackets. Game 1 WOODLAND 7, WAYNE COUNTY 4 In Game 1, Woodland trailed 4-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth but responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-4 lead that the Lady Cats would not relinquish. Pitcher Lainey Baker collected the pitching win for the Wildcats by tossing a five-hit, complete game. The senior walked only one and struck out 16 with over 75 percent of her pitches thrown for strikes. Baker was also productive at the plate with two hits including one RBI. Jordan Hammonds produced a pair of hits in the opening game win. Dylynn Motes had a fourth inning double with three RBIs that gave Woodland the lead. Michiah Hicks (2 RBIs) and Alana Carnes added one hit apiece. Cassie Jones was credited with one RBI. Game 2 WOODLAND 18, WAYNE COUNTY 6 In Game 2, Woodland — batting first as visitors — had early leads of 4-0 and 6-3, but the visiting Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to knot the score at 6-all. The Lady Cats then posted three runs in the fifth and nine more in the top of the seventh to run away with an 18-6 victory. Woodland out hit Wayne County (6-14) in the nightcap, 21 to nine. Peyton Dorn (5 IP, 6R, 5ER, 8H, 0BB, 2K) picked up the Wildcats’ pitching win by tossing the first five innings. Lainey Baker (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 6K) retired the final six outs to record a save. Michiah Hicks led the Lady Cats’ offense with five hits including a double and seven RBIs. Cambrie Carrington followed with four hits and two RBIs. Jordan Hammonds (double, three RBIs) and Peyton Dorn (RBI) finished with three hits each. Dylynn Motes had two hits including a three-run home run and four RBIs. Cassie Jones also contributed a pair of hits, a sacrifice fly, and two RBIs. Jessica Ryan added a double and Rylee Massingill tossed in one hit. Woodland (17-13-2) advances to the double-elimination Elite Eight State Tournament October 28-30 at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus where they will open against Starr’s Mill. The Panthers (16-6) eliminated Jackson County in the second round Tuesday night.

The Woodland girls and boys cross country teams placed second and fourth, respectively, Saturday at the Pickens and Grinnin’ Invitational in Jasper. Rylee Evans (19:51.8) led the Lady Cats to a runner-up finish behind Milton High School. She was third overall. Olivia Berry (16th), Emma Segars (17th) Miranda Pelow (32nd), and Danielle Thayer (37th) rounded out the Woodland scoring. The Woodland boys placed fourth of 39 teams. Tyler Jones (17:03.8), 7th led the Wildcats with teammate McKinley Chappell (17:09.6, 8th) closely behind. Kain Tanturri (54th), John Forsyth (62nd), Andy Forsyth (70th), and Drew Thayer (71st) rounding out the Woodland scoring. The Cass boys ran to a 32nd place finish. Critton Gearhart (85th) was the top Colonels’ finisher. Jake Wright (134th), Leonardo Galeana (246th), Andrew Rampey (260th), Abiatar Reyes (266th) were the other Cass finishers.

Adairsville volleyball finished 2-2 in the Region 6-AAA tournament and it was good enough to earn a No. 4 seed for the upcoming Class AAA state tournament. Adairsville won its tournament opener Thursday at home over Murray County and then finished 1-2 in matches Saturday at LaFayette. The Tigers stretched No. 2 seed Sonoraville to three sets in the tournament semifinals before falling 17-25, 25-21, 15-9. Adairsville then went to the elimination bracket needing a win to keep its season alive. The Tigers responded by holding on for a 25-21, 23-25, 15-9 win over Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe that secured the state playoffs berth. In the third place match, Adairsville came up short against Ringgold in a 26-24, 26-24 final. Adairsville (24-15-1) will face the Area-3A champion Oconee County (39-6) on the road in the first round of the state tournament.

The Cartersville volleyball team earned a runner-up finish Saturday in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament and Woodland extended its season with a fourth place finish in the tournament concluded in Roswell. Cartersville, which entered the region tournament as a No. 3-seed, lost to top-seeded Blessed Trinity in two separate matches Saturday but swept Calhoun in between those losses to earn a No. 2-seed in the Class AAAAA state playoffs. The opening loss to Blessed Trinity was 25-13, 25-9. Cartersville then defeated Calhoun 25-12, 25-16, before falling in the finals to the Titans 25-9, 25-11. Blessed Trinity (42-3) will start its defense of their 2020 state title as a No. 1 seed. Cartersville (25-11) will host No. 3-seed Northview (17-23) Tuesday in the first round of the state playoffs. Wildcats return to state playoffs Woodland, who went 1-1 in matches Thursday with a win over Cass and a loss to Calhoun on the Yellow Jackets home court, punched their ticket to the post season with a 25-10, 25-16 win Saturday over Hiram. The Lady Cats then dropped a 25-15, 25-22 decision to Calhoun to finish fourth. Calhoun had eliminated Cass earlier in the day. Woodland (9-32) must go on the road Tuesday to face top-ranked St. Pius X (47-1) in the opening round of the Class AAAAA tournament.

Cartersville, Adairsville, and Cass all collected important region victories Friday night and each put themselves in prime position for the state playoffs with their wins. Canes stake claim at No. 1 with dominant win at Blessed Trinity Cartersville (7-0, 3-0) raced to a 28-0 lead and led 35-7 at halftime on their way to a 49-21 Region 7-AAAAA win in Roswell. In the victory, Cartersville scored on seven of its first eight drives with the passing attack doing its damage in the first half and the ground game closing out the win. Jake Parker was 7 for 12 for 151 yards and three touchdowns -- all in the first half. He also finished the night with 32 rushing yards to lead the victory. Amari White, who had 148 yards rushing on 17 carries with two touchdowns led the ground attack. He also had a 32 yard touchdown reception. Malachi Jefferies finished with 66 yards on 16 carries and one score with Paul Gamble added a second half touchdown run for the Hurricanes in relief at quarterback. Kendric Price was on the receiving end of a 22-yard touchdown pass from Parker on the Hurricanes' opening drive touchdown. Parker's two other scoring strikes went to White on a screen pass and a deeper throw to Brynen Wilkins. Those scoring passes covered 32 yards each. Cartersville will likely vault to the No. 1 ranking when the new polls are released. No. 1 Warner Robins lost at Ware County Friday night 29-21 to open that door. Cartersville plays at Woodland next Friday. Tigers rally in fourth quarter to beat Sonoraville The Adairsville Tigers rallied for 21 fourth quarter points Friday night at home in a thrilling comeback win over Region 6-AAA foe Sonoraville. The Phoenix ground attack was dominant in the first half with Sonoraville taking a 14-0 lead and the two teams played a scoreless third quarter. Sonoraville led 7-0 in the second period following a 15-play, 93-yard drive. The scoring march was culminated with 27-yard touchdown strike from Jaxon Pate to Nicholas Beddington with 5:22 remaining in the first half. The Phoenix added to their lead in the final minute of the first half on a three-yard run. Following a scoreless third quarter, the Tigers offense came to life along with their special teams. Adairsville's first score broke the ice, then the Tigers recovered an onside kickoff attempt leading to another touchdown and blocked a short Sonoraville field goal attempt late that led to the go-ahead score. Adairsville quarterback Jonathan Gough had touchdown passes to Grayson Belcher and Evan Sanders. The connection with Belcher was a 9-yard toss that made the score 14-6. After the onside kick recovery, Gough hit Sanders on a 13-yard end zone fade that tied the game 14-14 when the Tigers converted an ensuing two-point play. Sonoraville methodically drove down the field late in the game, reaching the Adairsville 10-yard line to set up a short field goal attempt. The Tigers blocked the attempt however and recovered at the 49-yard line to set up the go-ahead drive. This time Gough found Belcher for a 24-yard touchdown pass with just 10 seconds remaining and the Tigers escaped with a 21-14 win. The loss drops Sonoraville to 4-3 on the season and 2-3 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville now sits alone in third place in Region 6-AAA with a 6-1 overall record and a 4-1 region mark. The Tigers play at Rockmart (6-1, 5-0) Friday. Colonels secure state playoff berth with win over Hiram, 34-24 Devin Henderson ran for two touchdowns and connected with Sacovie White for a third score as the Colonels defeated visiting Hiram 34-24. White added a spectacular 25-yard touchdown run just before the end of the first half to put Cass ahead 28-24 at the time. Freddi Gbadie also had a first quarter touchdown run that cut an early Hiram lead to 10-7. The Cass defense forced three punts, two turnovers on downs and an interception in Hiram’s six second-half possessions to keep the Hornets off the scoreboard in the final 24 minutes. The only score of the second half was Devin Henderson's 11-yard touchdown sprint in the final minute of the third quarter. Cass (5-3, 2-1) is firmly in control of a state playoff berth for the first time in 15 seasons with three weeks remaining in the regular season. The Colonels travel to No. 6 Calhoun Friday night and close the regular season the following week at home against Blessed Trinity. Cass, along with the rest of Region 7-AAAAA, has a bye week November 5 with the state playoffs beginning November 12. CALHOUN 52, WOODLAND 6 The Yellow Jackets led 49-0 at halftime and kept pace with Cartersville atop the Region 7-AAAAA standings. Calhoun (7-1, 3-0) hosts Cass Friday. Woodland (1-7, 0-3) has a home game against Cartersville.

The Cartersville volleyball team, seeded third going into Thursday’s opening rounds of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament, defeated both Hiram and second-seeded Calhoun in straight sets to lock-up a berth in the Class AAAAA playoffs. Cartersville easily dispatched Hiram in the evening’s first match at Calhoun, 25-10 and 25-4. Mason Cline had seven kills in the first round win. London Moultrie, Ailee England, and Tennessee Abernathy added five kills each. Mia Nicklas contributed five digs and Lily Gochee produced 18 assists. In the nightcap, the Hurricanes earned a straight sets win over Calhoun 25-12 and 25-18. Moultrie led the way for Cartersville with seven kills. Mason Cline and England added four kills apiece. Nicklas and Abby Allen finished with six digs each. Vanessa Johnson contributed two blocks and Gochee added 20 assists. “London Moultrie was on fire with her kills tonight,” said Cartersville coach Alicen Pearson. “Lily Gochee was perfect with her sets too. The whole team played amazing and was pumped!” Cartersville (24-9) advances to the winner’s bracket finals Saturday at 11 a.m. at Blessed Trinity. The winner of that match will be in the region championship. The loser is assured of no worse than a third place finish, but will need an additional win to reach the region title match. TIGERS ADVANCE AT REGION 6-AAA TOURNEY The Adairsville volleyball team defeated Murray County in straight sets Thursday evening at home, 25-18, 25-14. Adairsville (25-13-1) advances to the semifinals of the Region 6-AAA tournament Saturday at 11 a.m. at LaFayette. The Tigers will square off against Sonoraville. A win will lock up a state playoff berth and a spot in the single-elimination championship bracket. The loser of Saturday morning’s semifinal falls into a loser’s bracket for the third and fourth seeds in the state tournament and will need at least two more match wins to secure a playoff spot. WOODLAND SPLITS TOURNEY MATCHES Woodland split two matches in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament Thursday evening at Blessed Trinity. The Lady Cats defeated Cass 25-10, 25-19 in the opening round, but lost in straight sets to top-seeded Blessed Trinity in the second round of the double-elimination tournament. The tournament continues Saturday at Blessed Trinity with Cass (7-15-1) facing Calhoun (25-21) and Woodland (8-31) squaring off with Hiram (4-29-1) in elimination matches.

The Woodland softball team won both games of a doubleheader Tuesday at St. Pius X in Atlanta to win their best-of-three, Class AAAAA first round playoff series. Woodland won the opening game 3-2 and took the nightcap, 6-4. Woodland pitcher Lainey Baker struck out 11 in Game 1 and tossed a complete-game four hitter. Cassie Jones picked up the Game 2 win with six innings in the circle. Peyton Dorn closed out the seventh frame to earn a save. Jones distributed eight hits and a walk while striking out four. Dorn allowed one unearned run without giving up a hit and she fanned one. Michiah Hicks paced the Wildcats’ offense in Game 1 with three hits including a triple. Dylynn Motes, Baker, and Jessica Ryan all drove in runs. Motes hit a first inning, two-run home run that gave Woodland a 2-1 lead in Game 2. The Lady Cats went on to build a 4-1 lead in the second inning and were up 6-1 through five frames. St. Pius scored twice in the sixth inning and added one more in the top of the seventh, but a groundout ended the Golden Lions late threat. Hicks finished with five hits including a triple, double, and one RBI in the series. Motes (double, home run, 3 RBis) and Jessica Ryan (RBI) had three hits each. Jones (double), Dorn (double, RBI), and Baker (RBI) contributed two hits apiece. Jordan Hammonds (RBI), Cambrie Carrington (double), and Alana Carnes finished with one hit each in the doubleheader. The Wildcats (15-13-2) advance to the second round where they will host Wayne County (6-12) who ousted No. 1 seed Woodward Academy Tuesday in their best-of-three series. CASS ELIMINATED AT CHAMBLEE The Cass softball team was knocked out of the Class AAAAA state playoffs Tuesday after being swept in a first round doubleheader at Chamblee 7-3 and 2-1. The host Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead through the first two innings of the opening game and held on for a four-run victory. Cass scored three times in the fourth inning to cut the lead in half, but got no closer. Ansley Hight hit a two-run home run in the third and courtesy runner Olivia Woods scored on a passed ball for the third Colonels’ run. Alexis Woods tossed a complete-game gem in Game 2, but was outdueled in the circle by Chamblee’s Margaret Axelson. Woods scattered six hits and three walks allowed two earned runs. Axelson gave up nine hits and a walk but allowed just one earned run completing the best-of-three series sweep. Alexis Woods (RBI) and Eryn Lee (2 doubles) both had three hits in the two games for Cass. Hight had two hits including her Game 1 two-run homer. Saydee Najarro also had two hits including a double in the twin bill. Rachael Lee, Haylee Dishmon, and Reese Howard each had one hit in the playoff series. Shea Parker led Chamblee with five hits in the two game sweep. Chamblee advances to the second round and will host a best-of-three series next week against the Coffee/Mundy’s Mill winner. The Colonels’ season ends with an 11-13 record.

PRO FOOTBALL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (Rookie season; Cartersville HS)… finished his fifth NFL start 23-for-33 passing for 273 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His short touchdown pass came on a fourth and one play with 9:55 remaining in the second quarter. The nifty touch pass to Jacob Hollister in the back left corner of the end zone capped a nine-play, 70-yard drive that took 5:01 off the clock and cut the Tennessee lead to 14-13 at the time. The 6-6 signal caller added a four-yard touchdown run one minute into the fourth quarter on a designed quarterback draw. His score narrowed the Titans’ lead to 31-19 at that point. Lawrence finished with 28 rushing yards on seven attempts. The 37-19 loss was the 20th consecutive for Jacksonville dating back to Week 2 of the 2020 season. The streak is the third-longest in NFL history and the longest since 1976. The Jaguars (0-5) play the Miami Dolphins this Sunday (9:30 a.m. EDT) in London.
