Trevor Lawrence made his home debut in Jacksonville Sunday leading the Jaguars to an early 7-0 lead, but Jacksonville eventually fell to the Denver Broncos 23-13. Meanwhile Major League Baseball has reached the home stretch of the regular season, minor league baseball winds down, and almost two dozen local college athletes made their marks this past week with their respective programs. PRO FOOTBALL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (Rookie season; Cartersville HS)… starting his second NFL regular season game and his 2021 home opener, the 21-year-old quarterback was 14 of 33 for 118 yards and he was intercepted twice in a 23-13 loss that dropped Jacksonville to 0-2 for the year. Lawrence started hot — completing 5-of-7 attempts for 73 yards and a 25-yard touchdown toss to Marvin Jones. The TD capped an 11-play, 83-yard drive that gave the Jaguars a 7-0 lead. Jacksonville hosts the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday at 1 p.m. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (8th-year pro; Cartersville HS) . . . made three, one-inning appearances last week — two at home against the Cincinnati Reds and one at the Miami Marlins. He was charged with a blown save last Tuesday when he gave up a two-out, solo home run to Reds’ shortstop Kyle Farmer in the eighth inning. The home run tied the game 4-4, but the Pirates scored a run in the ninth to secure a win. The next day, the 28-year-old was inserted in the fourth inning against the Reds and worked a shutout frame. He allowed a hit and a walk but also recorded a strikeout in the Pirates’ 1-0 loss. In last Saturday’s 6-3 win at Miami, the southpaw struck out two while working a 1-2-3 seventh inning. The former Georgia Southern hurler has appeared in 49 games for Pittsburgh this season with a 3-4 record. He has a 5.80 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 40.1 innings pitched. CONNOR JUSTUS — Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (6th-year pro; Miami Marlins organization; Cartersville HS)… started all six games for the Jumbo Shrimp last week in their final regular season series of the year at the Norfolk Tides. The 26-year-old infielder finished the series going 7-for-24 at the plate including a walk, two doubles, one RBI, and scored three runs. In 2021, Justus has a .205 batting average in 258 official at-bats splitting time between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Jacksonville. He has two home runs and had 25 RBIs. Jacksonville finished the regular season portion of the schedule 69-51 and in second place in the Triple-A East-Southeast Division behind the Durham Bulls. The League now enters an extended 10-game schedule to determine a Triple-A Final Stretch champion based on winning percentage. The move by MiLB recovers games that were canceled at the beginning of the year. LUKE SCHILTZ — Arizona Complex League Rangers (3rd year pro; Cartersville native; Stoneman Douglas HS) … made his eleventh relief appearance of 2021 last Thursday against the ACL Cubs. He entered in the fourth inning and worked 2-and-1/3 innings allowing one, unearned run on two hits and three walks. He struck out one. For the season, the 6-5 right hander has a 7.71 ERA in just over 16 innings with 19 strikeouts. The Rangers (31-28) finished in ninth place in the 18-team rookie level league. The Texas organization team was third in the ACL West Division. The Woodland girls and boys cross country teams finished second at Saturday’s Wire2Wire Invitational hosted at Dellinger Park in Cartersville, but the race doubled as the defacto Bartow County Championship with the Lady Cats and Wildcats capturing those titles for 2021. Cambridge High School won both the girls and boys invitational team championships. The Cambridge girls finished with 30 total points followed by Woodland (51) and Cartersville (94). There were six girls teams recording scores and a total of 46 girls runners. Cass and Adairsville did not field a full girls lineup. Anna Filipek of Cambridge (19:19) finished just ahead of Woodland’s Rylee Evans (19:32) to win the individual race. The run by Evans earns her the Bartow County individual title for 2021. In the boys competition, Cambridge finished with 52 points followed by Woodland (60), Maynard Jackson (92) and Cartersville (106). The Cass boys were ninth and the Adairsville boys tenth in the 11-team invitational. Ryan McKee of Kennesaw Mountain High School was the boys individual champion outracing 94 competitors in 16:14. The Cartersville softball team lost a pair of games Saturday participating in the Chattanooga Score International Invitational Tournament hosted by Gordon Lee. The Lady Canes lost to Lovett 9-6 and Gordon Lee 11-2. In the loss to Lovett, Cartersville led 2-0 in the first inning but the Lions scored nine runs across the second through fifth innings to build a 9-3 advantage. The Hurricanes scored three runs in the fifth to cut into that lead, but got no closer. Campbell Rogers had two hits for Cartersville including a double. McKinley Chada had a double and two RBIs Kiley Arnold also doubled with one RBI. Mikey Lewis amd Ava Perkins added one hit and one RBI each. Gordon Lee took control of their game with the Canes by scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. The Trojans added to their lead and were ahead 11-0 before Cartersville’s Taff Bradley hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. The Canes had three other hits — all singles — by Mikey Lewis, McKinley Chada, and Ava Perkins. Cartersville (9-11) is scheduled for a home doubleheader Monday starting at 5 p.m. against Denmark and will travel to Coahulla Creek Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

The rushing tandem of Amari White and Malachi Jefferies totaled three scores to help lead Cartersville to a 24-14 win over Cherokee Friday night at Weinman Stadium. Meanwhile at Cochran Stadium, the Cass sophomore duo of Devin Henderson to Sacovie White connected on three touchdown passes to help lift the Colonels past Ridgeland, 30-6. In the only other game involving a Bartow school, Woodland gave up 23-unanswered second quarter points in a 51-20 loss at Chamblee. Adairsville was idle. CARTERSVILLE 24, CHEROKEE 14 The Purple Hurricanes remained undefeated and avenged their only regular season loss of last season Friday night by topping Cherokee at Weinman Stadium, 24-14. Amari White gave the Canes an early 7-0 lead with an opening drive touchdown run. The rushing combination of White and Malachi Jefferies then set up a field goal as Cartersville led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. Cherokee quarterback A.J. Swann got the Warriors back in the game in the second quarter. The Maryland commit threw a pair of second quarter touchdown passes — from 25- and 36-yards — to give the Warriors a 14-10 lead. Cartersville took advantage of a dropped punt in the final minute of the first half to regain the lead before the intermission. White punched in an 8-yard run with 35 seconds remaining for a 17-14 halftime lead. Following a scoreless third quarter, the Hurricanes put the game away in the fourth quarter with just 5:59 remaining. A 10-yard touchdown run by Jefferies built a two-score lead and was the final scoring play of the night. Cherokee (2-3) has a bye week before starting its region schedule October 1 at Woodstock. Cartersville (4-0) also has the week off prior to hosting Cass October 1 to begin play in Region 7-AAAAA. CASS 30, RIDGELAND 6 Cass sophomore quarterback Devin Henderson threw four touchdown passes Friday night as the Colonels beat the visiting Ridgeland Panthers, 30-6. Three of Henderson’s touchdown strikes went to fellow sophomore Sacovie White with the other going to junior wideout, Kaden Krause. Juan Parajito, who also had four kickoffs for touchbacks, booted a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Colonels’ first points of the night. A short punt by Cass early in the second quarter led to the Panthers’ points. Running back Chase Watkins capped a 27-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run. The PAT kick was blocked leaving Ridgeland with a 6-0 lead just over a minute into the period. Trailing 6-3 late in the first half, Henderson found Krause streaking down the seam for a 59-yard score. Parajito’s PAT gave Cass its first lead, 10-6, with 4:45 remaining in the second quarter. On the next Cass possession, Henderson connected on a 22-yard slant to White that built the Colonels lead to 17-6 at halftime. Following a scoreless third quarter, the Henderson to White combination capped a 13-play, 86-yard drive with a three-yard scoring toss and catch. The PAT failed, but Cass held a 23-6 lead with 10:22 left in the game. The final Cass score was a 15-yard touchdown pass from Henderson to White that finished off a 68-yard drive. Parajito’s kick made the score 30-6. Ridgeland had one final drive and reached the Colonels’ three-yard line, but penalties and the Cass defense kept the Panthers off the scoreboard. Henderson finished 14-for-21 passing for 176 yards. He added 77 yards on the ground. White caught 10 of those passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns. He added 25 yards rushing. White now has eight touchdowns on the season and Friday was his second game with three scores. Ridgeland (1-4) has a week off before traveling to Heritage-Catoosa on October 1. Cass (3-2) also has next Friday off before starting Region 7-AAAAA play at Cartersville October 1. CHAMBLEE 51, WOODLAND 20 The Woodland Wildcats could not keep up with a prolific Chamblee offense Friday night on the road, as the host Bulldogs pulled away in the second quarter en route to a 51-20 Wildcat loss. Chamblee, who was averaging over 54 points per game entering the contest, grabbed a two touchdown lead in the first six minutes and never trailed. Woodland scored twice in the second quarter to narrow the margin to 14-7 and 21-14, but the Bulldogs took over the game for the remainder of the half. Chamblee scored 23 unanswered points to lead 44-14 at halftime. The two teams traded touchdowns in a running clock second half. Chamblee improved to 4-1 on the season while Woodland falls to 1-4. The Wildcats have a bye week before hosting Blessed Trinity October 1.

Woodland softball, playing in the Chattanooga Score Invitational hosted by Gordon Lee at Warner Park, dropped a pair of games Friday night. The Lady Cats lost to Villa Rica 6-5 and fell to Strong Rock Christian 9-3. Michiah Hicks hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and had two hits in the loss to Villa Rica. Lainey Baker, Dylynn Motes, and Jessica Ryan added one hit and one RBI each for the Lady Cats. Cassie Jones, Alana Carnes, and Rylee Massingill also added one base hit apiece. In the loss to Strong Rock Christian, Motes had two hits including a double and one RBI. Hicks also had two hits including a double. Cambrie Carrington and Gretchen Collins contributed one hit and one RBI. Ryan and Peyton Dorn both added one hit each. Woodland (10-12-2) plays Saturday at 9 a.m. against Hebron Christian Academy.

The Adairsville volleyball team won a pair of Region 6-AAA matches Thursday night at home defeating Murray County in three sets and Ringgold in straight sets. The Tigers won the opening set over Murray County 25-18, but the Indians took the second set 25-21. In the deciding set, Adairsville prevailed 15-9. In the nightcap, the Adairsville won 25-16 and 25-23 to defeat Ringgold. “It was a great night for Adairsville volleyball,” said Lady Tigers coach Kaylie Vaughn Martin. “These girls are consistently showing improvement, they are training hard, and their work is reaping benefits. I couldn’t be more proud.” Lexie Childers had nine digs, seven assists, four kills and two aces in the win over Murray County. Kaylee Jordan contributed seven digs, six kills, and a pair of aces. Richlyn Blair added six kills and five digs. In the win over Ringgold, Childers finished with five digs, three assists, two service aces and two kills. Blair totaled seven digs and four kills. Autumn Henderson collected two blocks, two assists, and two digs. Yatorrean Hale contributed a pair of blocks, Jordan added four kills while Bailey Weaver, Madison Flemons, and Annie McCormick combined for 28 digs. Adairsville (15-5-1, 3-1) plays at Rockmart next Tuesday with the Tigers will face North Murray and the host Yellow Jackets. BLESSED TRINITY TOPS CARTERSVILLE; CASS AND WOODLAND SPLIT REGION MATCHES Region 7-AAAAA leading Blessed Trinity defeated Cartersville 25-20 and 25-9 Thursday night. The Hurricanes also had a 25-10, 25-15 victory over Cedartown at the Storm Center. At Cass, the Lady Colonels fell to Calhoun 25-16 and 25-14, but defeated Woodland 25-16, 17-25, 15-13. Woodland had a win over Hiram 25-22 and 25-17.

The Woodland softball team swept a Region 7-AAAAA doubleheader with Hiram Thursday night at home while Cass dropped a pair of one-run decisions at Calhoun. Adairsville fell to Rockmart in Region 6-AAA and Cartersville’s doubleheader at Blessed Trinity was rained out. WOODLAND 5, HIRAM 4 Cambrie Carrington hit a walk-off, solo home run in Thursday night’s first game to lift the Lady Cats to a come-from-behind win over visiting Hiram. Woodland scored three runs over the final two innings for the victory after the Hornets took a 3-2 lead through five frames. Peyton Dorn earned the pitching win for the Wildcats with a seven inning effort. She allowed four runs (only one earned) on 10 hits and no walks. Dorn fanned three. Michiah Hicks produced three hits including a triple for the Woodland offense. Lainey Baker had two hits and two RBIs. Bitsy Hartsfield followed with two hits and one RBI. Jessica Ryan also added two hits. Cassie Jones (RBI) and Dorn contributed one hit apiece. WOODLAND 16, HIRAM 4 Woodland cruised to an easy four-inning win in the nightcap of Thursday’s home doubleheader with a 16-4 win over the visiting Hornets. Michiah Hicks (3 RBIs), Dylynn Motes (2 RBIs), and Mackenzie Araya (RBI) had two hits each to lead the Wildcats’ offense. Cambrie Carrington hit a three-run home run. CALHOUN 7, CASS 6 Calhoun won a back-and-forth fray with visiting Cass in the first game of a Region 7-AAAAA doubleheader Thursday night, 7-6. Cass took a 3-0 led in the top of the first inning on the first of two Ansley Hight home runs. The Lady Colonels extended their lead to 4-2 in the top of the third and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth. Calhoun went ahead for good in the bottom of the fourth 6-5. The Yellow Jackets then added a solo home run in the fifth and Cass made it a 7-6 final with a second Ansley Hight solo home run in the seventh. Molly Banks had three hits including a home run to pace Calhoun’s 13 hit attack. Paris Kirby had two doubles and two RBIs. In addition to Hight’s two home runs and three RBIs. CALHOUN 5, CASS 4 Calhoun scored twice in the bottom of the sixth then got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning to edge Cass in the second game of their Thursday doubleheader, 5-4. Cass held leads of 2-0 and 4-3 before the Yellow Jackets came from behind in their last offensive frame. Avery Greeson tossed a complete game to earn the Calhoun pitching win. Emma Rogers and Paris Kirby had two hits each for the Jackets. Rachael Lee allowed only two earned runs but was tagged with the pitching loss for Cass. ROCKMART 10, ADAIRSVILLE 0 Rockmart pitcher Emma Scott tossed a complete game, seven-hitter Thursday night as the Yellow Jackets defeated Adairsville, 10-0. Scott struck out three and walked two. Rockmart (10-5, 7-3) out hit Adairsville twelve to seven. The game was moved to Hamilton Crossing Park due to wet field conditions at Adairsville. Chelsea Bates led the Tigers’ offense with three hits. Kelsey Gleason, McKenzie Pullum, Riley Mounger, and Alissa Winters added one hit each. Adairsville (5-12, 3-8) hosts Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Tuesday in their next Region 6-AAA game. CARTERSVILLE, BLESSED TRINITY POSTPONED The Cartersville softball team had its doubleheader at Blessed Trinity postponed due to rain and field conditions. The two teams have set a makeup date for October 6.

Cartersville volleyball lost a hard-fought, five-set match at North Cobb Christian Tuesday night. The Lady Canes won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-21, but lost the final three sets 25-22, 25-19, and 15-13. The Cartersville front line was led by London Moultrie with 11 kills, 16 assists, and five blocks. Ailee England finished with 13 kills and Lauren Lawson had 11 kills. Tennessee Abernathy added seven kills and a block. Lily Gochee contributed 20 assists, 10 digs, and four service aces. Mia Nicklas finished with 15 digs and four aces while Grace Merritt added nine digs and a pair of service aces. North Cobb Christian improved to 13-7 with their win. Cartersville (7-7, 1-1 Region 7-5A) hosts Blessed Trinity and Cedartown Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m.

Cass pitcher Rachael Lee threw a complete game, three-hitter and shutout Cartersville Tuesday as the Lady Colonels blanked the Lady Canes, 3-0. Lee walked one and recorded three strikeouts. All three Cass runs were scored in the bottom of the sixth. Reese Howard drove in two runs with a single and Kelly Young singled to drive in Howard. Alexis Woods and Young had two hits each for Cass. Haylee Dishmon, Saydee Najarro, Darianna Sosa, and Howard added the other Colonels’ base hits. McKinley Chada (6 IP, 3R, 0ER, 8H, 1BB) was tagged with the pitching loss for Cartersville. Campbell Rogers (double), Kiley Arnold, and Amelia Elrod had one hit each for the Hurricanes. Cartersville (9-10, 5-6) plays at North Cobb Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and then returns to Region 7-AAAAA action Thursday with a doubleheader at Blessed Trinity. Cass (8-7, 5-5) plays a region doubleheader at Calhoun Thursday starting at 5 p.m. WOODLAND 5, BLESSED TRINITY 1 Woodland pitcher Lainey Baker struck out 13 and scattered five hits as the Lady Cats beat visiting Blessed Trinity Tuesday night, 5-1. Woodland scored three runs in the third inning and added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth to build a 5-0 lead. The Titans’ lone run crossed in the sixth inning on back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly. Michiah Hicks paced the Wildcats’ offense with three hits and one RBI. Baker had two hits and one RBI. Cassie Jones also finished with two hits. Dylynn Motes hit a two-run home run as part of the Lady Cats’ three-run third inning. Jessica Ryan, Alana Carnes, and Peyton Dorn added one hit each. With the loss, Blessed Trinity slips to 7-5 overall and 5-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (8-10-2, 5-5) hosts a region doubleheader with Hiram Thursday at 5 p.m. COAHULLA CREEK 11, ADAIRSVILLE 1 Coahulla Creek led 5-0 after one inning and added six more runs in the fourth to defeat Adairsville, 11-1. McKenzie Pullum had a double for the Lady Tigers. Alissa Winters and Taylor Evans added one hit apiece. Coahulla Creek improved to 6-8 overall and 6-6 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (5-11, 3-7) hosts Rockmart Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Adairsville volleyball beat Coahulla Creek in three sets Tuesday night and lost a two-set decision to LaFayette. The Tigers won the middle set with Coahulla Creek 25-13, but dropped the opening set 25-15 and the third set 16-14. The Adairsville set losses to LaFayette were 25-10 and 25-12. In the win over the Colts, Autumn Henderson had seven kills and six blocks. Haley Stiles totaled four kills and three blocks. Kaylee Jordan contributed 16 digs with four kills while Lexie Childers finished with 11 digs and six assists. Richlyn Blair added five service aces. In the loss to LaFayette, Childers finished with three digs, three assists, two aces, a kill and a block. Madison Flemons had nine digs. Jordan added four digs and Blair contributed a pair of kills and one dig. With the tri-match split, Adairsville is now 13-5-1 for the season and 2-1 in region play. The Tigers will host Ringgold and Murray County in region matches Thursday starting at 5 p.m.

The Adairsville volleyball team defeated Temple in non-region action Tuesday in Carroll County. The Tigers won 25-16, 25-12 win and improved to 12-4-1 on the season. Yatorrean Hale finished with a team-high five kills and Lexie Childers added four. Kaylee Jordan had hree aces. Madison Flemons and Bailey Weaver each contributed seven digs.

The Adairsville softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader with Sonoraville Monday evening, falling 5-0 and 12-4. Phoenix pitcher Taylor Long tossed a no-hitter in Sonoraville’s opening win. In Game 2, Adairsville led 4-1 through four innings before Sonoraville rallied for 11 unanswered runs across the final three frames. Adairsville pitcher Jordan Clay matched Long for the first four innings of Game 1, but the Phoenix posted four runs in the bottom of the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth for their 5-0 victory. A three run home run by Sonoraville catcher Kelly Green and an additional run off a walk and an infield error gave the Phoenix their initial lead. A hit batsman, two walks, and another infield error plated Sonoraville’s fifth run in the sixth. Taylor Evans had a two-RBI single in the first inning before Alissa Winters and Riley Mounger delivered RBI hits in the fourth inning to help the Lady Tigers build a 4-1 lead early in Game 2. The Phoenix responded by taking advantage of three walks, three hits, a hit batsman, an error, and a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to grab a 7-4 lead. They then added five more runs in the top of the seventh on four hits and a pair of walks. The key blows were back to back triples by Taylor Martin and Taylor Long. Mounger finished with two hits and one RBI for the Tigers. Jenna Young and Makayla Wade also had two hits. Evans (2 RBIs), Winters (RBI), Halle Chasen, and McKenzie Pullam added one hit apiece in the Game 2 loss. Sonoraville improved to 13-3 on the season and stayed atop Region 6-AAA with an 8-1 mark. Adairsville (5-10, 3-5) travels to Coahulla Creek for a 5:30 p.m. start Tuesday and hosts Rockmart Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
