The Cartersville girls soccer team scored four times in the first half Thursday night on their way to a 4-0 win at South Paulding. Abbey Craig scored a goal and had one assist to lead the Lady Canes. Hattie Williams put Cartersville on the scoreboard first with a goal off an assist from Jocelen Fernandez. Ansley Holton and Maci Nicklaus had the other two Lady Canes’ goals. Trista Kelly earned the shutout as goalkeeper. The Lady Canes, who have finished as the No. 3-seed from Region 7-AAAAA, improved to 7-5-1 on the season. Cartersville will return to action Tuesday, April 13 at home against Allatoona. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 7, CEDARTOWN 2 The Lady Tigers built a 4-1 lead in the first half and cruised to a 7-2 victory over Class AAAA Cedartown Thursday night in Tiger Valley. Cat Wheeler scored two goals and had two assists. Megan Hardin also scored twice for the Lady Tigers. Maddie Gossett and Taylor Rhoades both had a goal and one assist. Lillie McBride scored the other Adairsville goal. The Lady Tigers improved to 13-1 on the season and will try to keep their unbeaten Region 6-AAA mark alive when they return to the pitch April 13 at home against Sonoraville. ROME 3, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 1 The Canes played much of the game down a man and lost to Class 6A 4th-ranked Rome Thursday night, 3-1. The visiting Wolves improved to 15-1 with their victory. Cartersville (7-4-1, 2-3 Region 7-AAAAA) has finished as the No. 2-seed in the region and will wrap up the regular season April 13 and 15 with non-region home games against Allatoona and Sandy Creek.

The Cartersville High School Elite Athlete of the Month for March is Kendyl Anderson. A senior and soccer midfielder for the Lady Canes, Anderson serves as a 2021 team captain. At the time of this nomination, Anderson led the team in assists and was tied for the team lead in goals. “Kendyl always gives maximum effort regardless of opponent or occasion,” said Lady Canes’ coach Chad Murray. “She is extremely coachable and really serves as an on-field coach. She is a born leader who not only leads by words, but by example. She anchors the middle of the field for us and has caught the attention of opposing coaches with her combination of effort and skill. It has been an honor to serve as her coach.” The daughter of Scott Anderson and Melissa Latimer, Kendyl has a brother Kaden who plays on the boys' team. Anderson has committed to play college soccer at Reinhardt University. Tatianna Christian is the March Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cass High School. A senior, Christian has been a three-sport athlete playing softball, basketball, and participating in track and field since her freshman year. This year she has played a role aiding both the softball and basketball teams in qualifying for the state playoffs. Christian has also been a consistent point scorer for the girls' track team. This season, she has placed in every meet — scoring in both shot put and discus throw. She currently has the third-best discus throw mark in school history at 101 feet and 7 inches. That throw is also the best in Region 7-AAAAA this season. Tatiana has set goals of establishing a new school record and qualifying for the state track and field meet. Following high school, she plans to go to college and hopes to continue her track and field career with the shot and discus. The March 2021 Elite Athlete of the Month for Adairsville High School is Christian Gough. A junior member of the Tigers’ track and field team, he is the son of Terry and Erin Gough. Gough, who primarily participates in the 800-meter run and with the 4x400 meter relay team, had a first-place finish at the Cass meet and a top-five finish at the 12-team Calhoun meet in the 800. His personal best time of 2:05 is only one second off the school record. “Christian has a tremendous work ethic,” noted Adairsville High Athletic Coordinator Drew Elrod. “During the off-season, you will see him running all over campus. He is a high character young man that excels on the track and in the classroom. Christian is a great example of what it means to represent the A!” Gough carries a 3.8 grade point average while taking Honors and Advanced Placement classes. He plans to attend college/university after high school. Peyton Posey is the Woodland High School Elite Athlete of the Month for March 2021. Posey is a starting pitcher and outfielder for the Wildcats’ baseball team. Through his first 20 innings pitched this season, Posey had 22 strikeouts and only four walks. His walks + hits to innings pitched ratio was 1.05 with an earned run average of 2.10. At the plate, the senior was hitting .344 at the time of this submission in late March. He will continue his education and baseball career after high school. The right-hander has committed to play at Shorter University. The Adairsville Lady Tigers kept their unbeaten region mark Tuesday night with a 4-0 victory over Murray County in Tiger Valley. Cat Wheeler and Sadye Johnson scored one goal and had one assist each. Taylor Rhoades and Emma Collins scored the other Adairsville goals. Adairsville improved to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in Region 6-AAA. WOODLAND GIRLS 2, SOUTH PAULDING 1 Tiera Feanny scored both goals for the Lady Cats and keeper Chloe Ravish made 25 saves Tuesday night as Woodland outlasted visiting South Paulding, 2-1. The Spartans scored in the game’s 17th minute to take an early lead, but Feanny found the net four minutes later to take a 1-1 tie to the intermission. Feanny’s game winner came with 25:27 remaining in the second half and the Lady Cats’ held off South Paulding for the final 15 minutes. Woodland (5-8-1) travels to Cass Friday for both teams’ final region game of the year. The winner will qualify for the state playoffs as the No. 4-seed. CASS BOYS 1, EAST PAULDING 0 The Cass boys squeaked out a 1-0 home win over Class 6A East Paulding Tuesday night at Cochran Stadium. Kevin Polo scored the game's only goal. Kaleb Speights assisted. Cass coach Justin Fitzgerald credited the Colonels' midfield with strong play that generated plenty of chances. He noted that his club simply struggled to finish on opportunities. The loss drops East Paulding to 7-7 for the season. Cass (9-5, 2-2 in Region 7-AAAAA) hosts Woodland Friday night in both teams' final region game. The winner earns the No. 3-seed in the state playoffs. The loser will be the No. 4-seed.

Pitchers Scotty Smith and Julian Wright combined for a one-hit shutout and Jakiyon Porter had four hits as Woodland beat Hiram Tuesday night, 7-0. Smith started on the mound and allowed only a fourth inning single to earn the win. He struck out eight. Wright allowed only two walks over the final two innings and struck out five. The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added their other five runs in the fourth inning. Woodland had nine hits in the contest. Porter singled in the first, third, fourth, and sixth innings for his four hit. The Wildcats’ shortstop also stole four bases and drove in two runs. Chase Carson tripled and drove in one run. Drew Billings had one hit and one RBI. Carter Heath, Smith, and Peyton Posey contributed one hit apiece for Woodland. The loss drops Hiram to 2-15 for the season and keeps the Hornets winless in Region 7-AAAAA at 0-10. Woodland (6-14, 2-8) travels to Hiram for a doubleheader Friday scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

A one-out RBI double by Jake Brasfield drove home courtesy runner Paul Gamble in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday night to break a 2-2 tie and lift 2nd-ranked Cartersville to a 3-2 win over top-ranked Blessed Trinity at Richard Bell Field. The late RBI ended four and one-half innings of scoreless baseball after both teams struck for two runs in the first inning. A leadoff single, RBI double, and two-out single gave the visiting Titans an early 2-0 lead off Canes’ starter Micah Earwood. Cartersville answered with the combination of three singles and a dropped third strike wild pitch to even the score at 2-2 off Titans’ starter D.J. Radtke. Curt Bonner, Blake Sutton, and Brasfield had the base hits for Cartersville. Parker McPherson reached and made second base on a missed third strike and wild pitch. The play enabled Bonner to score. McPherson later crossed the plate on the hit by Brasfield. The middle innings belong to the two starting pitchers. Earwood scattered three hits and a walk with nine strikeouts over the next five frames. Radtke also struck out nine and walked one between the second and the bottom of the sixth inning. Joseph Chambers retired the final two outs in the sixth for the Titans. Davis Williams pitched a scoreless top of the seventh for the Hurricanes and earned his second save of the year. He walked two and struck out one in the final frame. Cartersville improved to 14-5 for the season and 9-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Radtke, who suffered the pitching loss, was one of three Titans to finish with two hits each. Hayden Grier and Ben Hamacher contributed two hits each. Max Puckett had one hit for Blessed Trinity (12-7, 6-2). The Region 7-AAAAA three-game series now moves to Roswell for a doubleheader Thursday starting at 5 p.m.

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe built a 3-0 lead early and Adairsville managed only a single run in the third inning as the Warriors beat the Tigers 6-1 Tuesday night in Region 6-AAA play. Adairsville pitchers Wade Dooley (4 IP, 4R, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) and Braden Powell (2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 0H, 2K) limited LFO to only two hits and two walks, but five untimely errors by the Tigers’ defense led to five unearned runs in the loss. Adairsville managed only three hits. Kyler Smith (RBI), Evan Sanders, and Powell contributed one hit each. LFO remained unbeaten in region play at 5-0 while improving to 6-12 overall. Adairsville (7-8, 2-3) will host the Warriors Thursday at 5:55 p.m.

The Cass Colonels lost the opening game of their region series with visiting 9th-ranked Calhoun Tuesday night, 12-2, in five innings. Cass led 2-0 in the first inning, but the Yellow Jackets scored six runs in the second inning, two in the third, and added four more runs in the fifth on a Parker Lester grand slam. The Colonels contributed to Calhoun’s productive second inning. Two walks and two errors blended with three Yellow Jacket hits to produce the six runs. Lester led the Calhoun offense with two hits, including his grand slam and six RBIs. Braden Saunders also drove in two runs. Six Colonels — Bentley Markley, Matt Shook, Nic Wallin, Carson Hill, Aidan Larkin, and Jordan Gani — had one hit apiece. Chase Botts (2 IP, 6R, 0ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) started on the mound for Cass and took the pitching loss although none of the runs against him were earned. Hayden Cole (2.2 IP, 6R, 2ER, 3H, 6BB, 5K) also worked in relief. Calhoun improved to 10-6 on the season and 6-4 in Region 7-AAAAA. Max Kops doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth in Tuesday evening’s second game and Connor Todaro drove him in two outs later with a line drive single to help Georgia Highlands earn a doubleheader split with Andrew College at LakePoint, 5-4. After dropping the opening game 9-6, the Chargers trailed early in the second game 3-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth. A two-run homer by Trace Twardoski and a solo shot by Palmer Sapp got GHC back into the game, 3-3. The Tigers regained their lead 4-3 in the fifth but Sapp tied the game again in the sixth with a sacrifice fly. Matthew Silka (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) picked up the pitching win for the Chargers by working a scoreless ninth inning. Chase Townsend (4 IP, 3ER, 5H, 4BB, 3K) started and worked the first four innings. Caleb Garner (4 IP, 1ER, 5H, 4K) worked middle relief through the eighth inning. In the opener, the Chargers’ defense committed four errors that led to eight unearned runs in a 9-6 loss to the visiting Tigers. Andrew led 5-2 through the first four innings and extended the lead to 7-3 in the seventh. GHC’s Joe Sutton hit a two-run home run in the first inning to account for the early Chargers’ runs. Todaro singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning and Sapp cut the Andrew lead to 7-4 with a solo home run in the eighth. Both teams posted two runs in the ninth inning. Sutton drove in a run for the Chargers with a sacrifice fly and David Smith singled home Todaro who had four hits in the game. Conner Perry (6.1 IP, 7R, 1ER, 12H, 2BB, 7K) started on the mound and suffered the pitching loss despite allowing only one earned run. Zack Valentine (2.2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1K) closed out the final two and two-thirds innings. The split leaves Andrew with a 22-13-1 record overall and 7-5 in conference play. Georgia Highlands is now 29-5 overall and 8-2 in the conference. The four-game Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association series continues Saturday with a doubleheader in Cuthbert.

ATHLETES BEYOND BARTOW Cartersville High graduate Sam Howard looks set to open the year in the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen. The former Colorado Rockies hurler could possibly be the lone left-handed reliever to start the season with the Pirates, who will open against the Chicago Cubs. Howard went 0-1 with eight strikeouts this spring, posting a 2.45 ERA and 0.82 WHIP in eight outings. Elsewhere, Canes product Lindsey Bonner helped the York College women’s golf team to a pair of victories this past week. On the season, the Spartans have won each of their three events. PRO BASEBALL Sam Howard (Pittsburgh Pirates; 8th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) — Howard made relief appearances last Tuesday in a 1-0 win over the Twins, in Friday’s 5-2 loss to the Tigers and in Sunday’s 2-1 victory against Baltimore. Howard worked 2 1/3 innings in those three scoreless stints. He allowed one hit and struck out three, lowering his Grapefruit League ERA to 2.45 in eight appearances and 7 1/3 innings pitched. Pittsburgh opens the 2021 MLB regular season against the Chicago Cubs at 2:20 p.m. EDT Thursday at Wrigley Field. COLLEGE BASEBALL Mason Barnett (Auburn So., Cartersville HS) — Barnett made his regular Saturday start this past weekend against Kentucky and went 5 1/3 innings for a no-decision. Barnett gave up five earned runs on six hits. He also hit two batters and struck out eight, facing 24 batters. Auburn tied the game in the eighth before losing 7-6. The Tigers were swept by the Wildcats in the three-game conference series. Auburn (11-11, 0-6 SEC) will try to snap a six-game skid when a three game series begins Thursday at Arkansas. Clifton Dempsey (Toccoa Falls Sr., Cartersville HS) — The Screaming Eagles shortstop was 2-for-3 last Tuesday in a 17-5 loss to visiting Truett McConnell. Dempsey is hitting .333 with two home runs and 12 RBIs, while starting all 23 games. Toccoa Falls (9-14) has a home game Wednesday against Reinhardt before traveling to Bob Jones (South Carolina) for a three-game series Friday and Saturday. Logan Nelson (Truett McConnell Fr., Cass HS) — Nelson went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in last Tuesday’s 17-5 win at Toccoa Falls. The Bears were also swept in a series at No. 1-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan, with Nelson finishing 1-for-3 with a run scored in Monday’s finale. TMU (13-14, 3-9 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts a three-game conference series with Bryan College (Tennessee) Friday and Saturday. Preston Welchel (Coastal Alabama-Bay Minette Fr., Cartersville HS) — Welchel started in three of the Sun Chiefs’ four games last week, going 2-for-9 with two walks, one RBI and a stolen base. Coastal was 3-1 for the week in four games against Chattahoochee Valley CC. The Sun Chiefs (13-22, 5-7 ACCC) have a four-game conference series Thursday and Saturday with Bishop State CC. Cohen Wilbanks (Cleveland State CC Fr., Cartersville HS) — Wilbanks was inserted at catcher in home games last week against Walters State CC and BCA Post Grad, finishing 1-for-3 with a run scored. He also had four putouts and an assist in five defensive chances. CSCC (11-16, 4-10 TCCAA) has a doubleheader Saturday at Roane State CC. Jordan Wilkie (Augusta Fr., Cartersville HS) — Wilkie started at second base in all six of the Jaguars’ games last week. Wilkie was 2-for-17 at the plate with two walks and two runs scored. Augusta won one of three against Lander and was swept in a three-game set with Georgia Southwestern State. The Jaguars (4-16, 3-15 Peach Belt Conference) were scheduled to play Tuesday at USC-Aiken before hosting UNC-Pembroke in a three-game conference series Friday and Saturday. Zach Wilson (Penn State-Greater Allegheny Fr., Woodland HS) — Wilson was 2-for-7 — including a double, a walk and two runs scored — while appearing in three of his team’s four games last week. In four games played, Wilson is 3-for-9 with one RBI. PSU-Greater Allegheny (3-3, 3-3 PSU Athletic Conference) was slated to play Tuesday at PSU-Du Bois and play Saturday and Sunday in a four-game, home-and-home series with PSU-New Kensington. BASKETBALL Justice Hayes (South Georgia Tech Fr., Cass HS) — The Jets went 2-1 last week, with Hayes compiling four points, four steals and two assists off the bench. T.J. Horton (Georgia Highlands Fr., Cartersville HS) — Horton came off the bench twice before earning a start to close out a 3-0 week for the Chargers. The former two-sport star for the Canes scored nine points in an 83-66 win over Central Georgia Tech last Tuesday at home. Horton totaled four points, four steals and one assist in a 105-82 rout of Andrew College Thursday at home. During his start Saturday at Andrew, The Daily Tribune News Player of the Year for the 2017-18 season racked up 13 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal. FOOTBALL Terry Berlin (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville HS) — Berdin totaled 7 yards on four touches, including three rushes, in a 50-10 victory Saturday at Bluefield. Bryce Burgess (Reinhardt Jr., Adairsville HS) — Burgess scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to help Reinhardt pull away in the second half, during which the Eagles outscored the Rams 33-0. Hunter Hardin (Point Sr., Woodland HS) — As a starting guard, Hardin contributed to an offensive attack that produced just shy of 300 yards and 21 points in a loss to Faulkner (Alabama) Saturday at Ram Stadium in Valley, Alabama. Sean Holton (Davidson Sr., Cartersville HS) — Holton made the participation report but didn’t record any stats in a 24-21 win against Morehead State Saturday at home. John Scifers (Incarnate Word Graduate Transfer, Woodland HS) — Playing in a ridiculously high-scoring game, Scifers kicked off seven times, averaging 58.7 yards, in a 75-45 loss Saturday at Nicholls. Scifers recorded three touchbacks and saw one kick go out of bounds. Bryce Wilkins (Reinhardt Jr., Cartersville HS) — Wilkins helped pave the way for Reinhardt to rack up 485 yards of total offense, as the Eagles improved to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the Mid-South Conference. GOLF Lindsey Bonner (York Sr., Cartersville HS) — Bonner served as York’s fifth starter in a pair of wins last week, when the Spartans finished first Tuesday in the Alvernia Invitational at LedgeRock Golf Club in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, and Saturday in the Turtle Creek Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by Arcadia University at Turtle Creek Golf Club in Limerick, Pennsylvania. The senior shot an 85 Tuesday and an 86 Saturday, placing seventh and ninth, respectively, in the two events. SOCCER Russell Shealy (Syracuse R-So., Cartersville native, Darlington HS) — Shealy recorded one save, as Syracuse fell on the road to North Carolina State by a 2-1 final score in overtime Friday in Raleigh. SOFTBALL Colbi Ballard (Shorter So., Cartersville HS) — In three starts in left field and as designated player, Ballard went 0-for-5 in a three-game series last Friday and Saturday against visiting Auburn Montgomery. Shorter (4-19, 0-15 Gulf South Conference) hosts Christian Brothers in a three-game conference series Friday and Saturday. Bella Carnes (Georgia College Fr., Woodland HS) — Carnes grounded out in her seventh-inning, pinch-hitting appearance last Thursday. The Bobcats lost both games of a home doubleheader with Francis Marion. Georgia College (4-16, 0-6 Peach Belt Conference) was set to travel Tuesday to Georgia Southwestern State and play host Friday to UNC-Pembroke in conference doubleheaders. Skylar Chappell (Cottey College Fr., Woodland HS) — Chappell made a start at catcher Friday in a 6-4 loss at Central Baptist (Arkansas). Chappell was 0-for-3, dropping her season batting average to .389 in 19 plate appearances for the Comets across 11 games. Cottey (14-4) had Saturday games with Texas A&M-Texarkana canceled due to COVID-19. The Comets were scheduled for a home game Tuesday against Avila (Missouri) and home doubleheaders Thursday, Friday and Saturday against Bacone (Oklahoma), William Woods (Missouri) and Crowley’s Ridge (Arkansas), respectively. Brianna Hill (Covenant Fr., Woodland HS) — Hill went 2-for-8, scored a run and drove in two in four games last week — all wins over Johnson University (Tennessee) and Agnes Scott. Hill is batting .242 for the season across 18 games and 35 plate appearances. Covenant (14-12, 3-1 USA South Athletic Conference) travels Saturday to Maryville College. Lauren McElhaney (West Georgia Fr., Cartersville HS) — McElhaney made a seventh-inning, pinch-hitting appearance last Wednesday during a 4-0 loss at Columbus State. West Georgia (16-6, 12-3 Gulf South Conference) lost both games of the doubleheader but swept a three-game conference series versus Lee University Friday and Saturday. The Wolves travel Wednesday to Miles College and play Friday and Saturday in a three-game conference series at Auburn Montgomery. Hope Short (Shorter Fr., Cartersville HS) — Short made a pair of starts at second base in last weekend’s home series with Auburn Montgomery. She was 0-for-3 at the plate and had two putouts and three assists in six fielding chances, as the Hawks dropped all three games in their conference series. Hannah Todd (Kansas Sr., Cartersville HS) — Todd entered with two outs in the third inning Sunday and recorded the next four outs in a 12-0 loss to visiting 10th-ranked Oklahoma State. Todd allowed three runs (no earned runs) on three hits. She struck out two, while facing eight batters. The Jayhawks (17-11, 1-2) play a three-game Big 12 Conference series Friday through Sunday at Oklahoma. TENNIS Houston Medlock (Piedmont Jr., Adairsville HS) — Medlock fell 6-2, 6-2 on Line 1 singles and dropped an 8-7 (8-6) heartbreaker on Line 2 doubles during a 6-3 loss in USA South action Friday at Covenant. Bryce VanOrder (Piedmont Fr., Woodland HS) — Playing on Line 1 doubles against Covenant, VanOrder came up just short by an 8-6 final score. He also dropped a three-set heartbreaker on Line 2 singles, falling by a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) final. TRACK AND FIELD Parker Breedlove (Reinhardt So., Cartersville HS) — Breedlove placed sixth in the 5000-meter run — crossing the finish line in 16 minutes, 41.95 seconds — during the Life University Spring Break meet Friday in Marietta. VOLLEYBALL Nedu Evans (Augusta So., Cartersville HS) — In home wins against Flagler (Friday) and Georgia College (Saturday), Evans racked up 12 kills — including 10 versus Flagler — six digs, two block assists and a block. — Nicholas Sullivan of The Daily Tribune News contributed to this report.
