Back-to-back two-run doubles by Blessed Trinity in the top of the fourth inning broke open a 1-0 game and lifted the Titans to a 5-0 lead Monday on their way to a 6-1 win at Woodland. The Wildcats' lone run of the game scored in the sixth inning. Jakiyon Porter singled, stoled second, moved to third on a passed ball and crossed on a Titans’ infield error. Peyton Posey (4 IP, 5R, 1ER, 7H, 2BB, 5K) started on the mound for Woodland and suffered the pitching loss. Drew Billings (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 4K) pitched the final three innings for the Wildcats. At the plate, Posey finished with two hits. Chase Carson and Ayden Ray along with Porter had one hit each for the Wildcats. Max Puckett and Ben Hamacher combined for six hits including three doubles and two RBIs for the Titans. Blessed Trinity improved to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (5-9, 1-3) travels to Roswell Friday to complete the region, three-game series with a doubleheader at Blessed Trinity.

Micah Earwood struck out 13 and scattered only three hits in a seven inning shutout performance Monday as Cartersville won 7-0 at Calhoun. Earwood needed only 98 pitches in his complete-game effort and allowed only two baserunners after the first inning. Class AAAAA 5th-ranked Cartersville took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, added three more runs in the fifth and scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for their seven-run total. Calhoun committed five errors in the game leading to five unearned runs. Curt Bonner sparked the Cartersville offense with a three-hit game. Seven other Canes — Hank Smith, Parker McPherson, Colt McKibben, Drew Rothschild, Elliott Eastin, Davis Williams, and Sam Melton — finished with one hit each. Brasfield drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Blake Sutton was credited with a pair of RBIs. The loss for the 6th-ranked Yellow Jackets (6-5, 1-3) was their third straight, coming off a doubleheader loss at Blessed Trinity last Friday. Cartersville improved to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. The two teams will match up again Friday in a doubleheader at Richard Bell Field to complete their Region 7-AAAAA three-game series.

The Cartersville High School boys track and field team placed fifth Saturday at the 16-team Creekview Invitational in Canton with the Lady Canes finishing 13th. West Forsyth won the boys team championship with 100.2 points. Harrison (88), East Paulding (84.2), and Etowah (65) rounded out the top five teams along with the Canes. The West Forsyth girls also won the team title. The Cartersville girls totaled 16.2 points. The Georgia Highlands Chargers opened Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference play Saturday with a pair of wins over Andrew College. Georgia Highlands’ Joe Sutton hit a pair of home runs and finished with four hits while Johnny Dow scattered nine hits and struck out eleven as the Chargers beat visiting Andrew College 4-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at LakePoint Sports in Emerson. Sutton hit solo home runs in the first and eighth innings and added singles in the third and sixth innings to complete a 4-for-4 performance. Trace Twardoski also homered for the Chargers. Chase Townsend earned a save by closing out the ninth. In the seven inning second game of the doubleheader, the Chargers trailed into the fifth inning before making a late comeback. The visiting Tigers led 4-0 in the fifth inning when GHC cut the lead in half on a Mick Moody solo home run, a triple by Omar Daniels, and an RBI single by Brandon Prince. After Andrew added a run in the sixth with a homer, the Chargers took the lead for good with a five-hit frame. Joe Sutton singled and scored on an RBI double by David Smith. Ben Olson drove in a run with a base hit, and Moody delivered an infield single that enabled two more runs. Georgia Highlands (23-3, 2-0) returns to action Tuesday at LakePoint with a conference doubleheader against East Georgia at 2 p.m.

The Woodland girls soccer team celebrated their 2021 Senior Night Friday with a 5-1 home victory over Region 7-AAAAA rival Hiram. The Lady Cats honored their three seniors Tiera Feanny, Hayley Gilbert, and Sydney Molinaro. Atlantis Walker gave Woodland an early lead with a goal in the game’s third minute as the Lady Cats built a 4-0 advantage by halftime. Samantha Nycum added a Woodland goal in the 29th minute. Reagan Weightman made it 3-0 in the 39th minute and Feanny, who also had an assist on the night, added another goal just 32 seconds later. Hiram cut the Woodland lead to 4-1 in the 54th minute and Weightman registered her second goal of the night in the 71st minute for the Lady Cats’ 5-1 final score. “The girls worked hard and many players got to play new positions tonight,” said Woodland head coach Nicole Heiser. “Our midfielders and defenders did a great job keeping them off our half. I’m proud of their effort to get our first region win of the year.” The Lady Cats (4-5-1, 1-1) will host Calhoun Tuesday in another region contest.

The Cartersville Hurricanes won a pair of run-rule shortened games Friday night at Richard Bell Field to complete a three-game Region 7-AAAAA series sweep of Hiram. The Canes won 11-1 in five innings to open the doubleheader and took the nightcap 10-0 in six innings. Cartersville won the series opener Tuesday at Hiram, 14-4. Phillip Schiltz tossed a five-inning complete game in the opener Friday night. He allowed only one, unearned run scattering five hits and a walk. Schiltz struck out nine Hornets. In the second game, starting pitcher Mason McBee and reliever Colt McKibben combined on a three-hit shutout. McBee struck out six in four innings of work. McKibben registered three strikeouts. Meanwhile, the Canes offense pounded out 25 hits in the doubleheader and scored two or more runs in six of their ten offensive frames. Parker McPherson had five hits including three doubles and three RBIs in the twin bill. Blake Sutton had four hits including a double and three RBIs. Curt Bonner also finished the doubleheader with four hits including a triple and two RBIs. Hank Smith contributed three hits with two RBIs for the night. Colt McKibbon had two hits and two RBIs in Game 1. Elliott Eastin had two hits in the second game. Jake Brasfield tripled and drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap. Drew Rothschild and Jimbo Gaines registered one hit and one RBI each in the opener. Tyler Williamson and Trey Holstein tossed in one hit each and David Williams drove in a run. Hiram falls to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cartersville has now won six of seven games and improves to 7-4 for the season and 3-0 in region play. The Canes begin their next three-game region series Tuesday at Calhoun.

The Cass Colonels bounced back from Tuesday night’s narrow loss at Woodland to sweep a Region 7-AAAAA doubleheader over the Wildcats Friday night at the Cass High Athletic Complex. The Colonels won the opener 3-2 on a dramatic walk-off double by Matt Shook and took the nightcap 8-1 behind the strong, complete-game pitching of Jordan Gani. CASS 3, WOODLAND 2 Matt Shook drove in the game winning run with a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh as Cass nipped Woodland 3-2 in Friday night’s opener. Jayden Smith, who picked up the pitching win for Cass in relief of starter Trey Scott, singled to start the Colonels’ seventh inning and later scored on Shook’s clutch, two-out hit. Smith, who was a tough-luck 1-0 loser in Tuesday’s first game of the Cass-Woodland series, retired the final six outs on the mound for the Colonels. He allowed two hits and struck out one. Scott worked the first five innings allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and seven walks. He fanned five. Drew Billings (1.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Woodland in relief of Wildcats’ starter Scotty Smith (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 6H, 3BB, 3K). Shook and Smith both finished with two hits in the game for Cass. Jordan Gani, Kyle Miller, Aidan Larkin, and Nic Wallin had the other Cass base hits. Jacob Gravett had two hits for Woodland. Ayden Ray, Peyton Posey, and Carter Heath supplied one hit each for the Wildcats. Ray added one RBI with a sacrifice fly. CASS 8, WOODLAND 1 Cass grabbed a 5-0 lead through three innings of Friday’s second game and added three more insurance runs in the fifth inning on their way to an 8-1 win. The offensive production was more than enough for Cass pitcher Jordan Gani who allowed just one hit and three walks to the Wildcats in a complete-game effort. The lone Woodland run was unearned and Gani struck out 11. Gani was also productive at the plate contributing a pair of hits. Alex Freeman had an RBI single and Matt Ballas smacked an RBI double in the third inning. Kyle Miller contributed a bunt single in the Colonels’ second inning and Matt Shook added a sac fly RBI in the same frame. The Colonels’ three-run fifth inning came without a base hit. Two hit batsmen, two walks, and a Woodland miscue led to the Cass runs. Carter Heath (2.1 IP, 5ER, 5H, 6BB, 4K) was tagged with the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Ayden Ray (2.1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 1H, 2BB, 2K) and Nate Rosser (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 3K) also pitched for Woodland. The Wildcats slip to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland starts a three-game region series at home Tuesday against Blessed Trinity. Cass (3-9, 2-1) also plays at home Tuesday against Hiram to open a three-game set.

The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams swept visiting Cass Friday night in Region 7-AAAAA action. The wins keep both Cartersville teams unbeaten in region play heading into key region matchups Tuesday with Blessed Trinity. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 5, CASS 0 Kendyl Anderson scored three goals and Abbey Craig registered a goal and an assist as the Lady Canes blanked visiting Cass Friday night, 5-0. Anderson picked up the first goal off a rebound and put Cartersville up 2-0 off a designed corner kick and an assist from Maci Nicklas. Hattie Williams gave Cartersville a 3-0 lead off an assist from Craig and then Craig scored a goal of her own off an assist from Ava Flemons to put the Lady Canes up 4-0 at the intermission. Anderson completed her hat trick of goals early in the second half. The goal was a header off a long throw in from Devondria Johnson. “The girls did a really good job of playing the way we want them to play,” said Cartersville head coach Chad Murray. “We possessed the ball well and made good passes forward. We defended well and pressured as well as we have all season. It was a good step forward for us.” The loss drops the Cass girls to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Lady Colonels travel to Hiram for another region game Tuesday at 6 p.m. Cartersville (5-3-1, 2-0) hosts unbeaten Blessed Trinity Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 3, CASS 2 The Canes’ Joel Zazueta scored a pair of goals including the game-winner off a free kick from Alex Rios in the final five minutes to edge visiting Cass Friday night, 3-2. Kaden Anderson gave Cartersville a first half lead with a goal in the game’s 25th minute after Rios sent a cross to the back side. The Canes took that 1-0 lead to the intermission. Cass tied the score 1-1 early in the second half, but Zazueta scored the first of his two goals with an upper corner shot from 25 yards out. After the Colonels knotted the score for a second time a few minutes later, Zazueta added the deciding goal in the waning minutes. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Colonels and drops Cass to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Colonels travel to Hiram Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Cartersville (6-1-1, 2-0) hosts Blessed Trinity Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Cass High boys track and field team won a quad meet Thursday evening and the Lady Colonels placed second in the competition held at Gordon Central High School. The Colonels posted 131 points to finish well ahead of Gordon Central (69), Armuchee (28), and Murray County (18). The host Lady Warriors outscored the Cass girls 77-53 with Armuchee (46) placing third and Murray County (43) fourth.
