The Cartersville girls and boys basketball teams dropped road games Saturday at Model. The Lady Canes fell in overtime, 64-63, and the Hurricanes also narrowly lost to the Blue Devils 68-65. MODEL 64, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 63 (Overtime) A huge second half rally by the Cartersville girls sent Saturday’s game at Model into overtime, but the Lady Blue Devils knocked down a shot as time expired to get by the Lady Canes, 64-63. Cartersville trailed 30-19 at halftime but managed a furious second half comeback. Ansley Griffin led Cartersville with 19 points. Lehla Thomas pumped in 10 points and had nine rebounds. Model improved to 10-9 for the year with their non-region win. The loss dropped the Lady Canes to 4-12 on the season. They’ll look to pick up their first region win of the year Friday when they host Woodland at the Storm Center. MODEL 68, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 65 In a contest that never saw a quarter end with more than a three-point margin Saturday, the host Blue Devils outlasted Cartersville 68-65. Cartersville led at the end of each of the first three quarters, 13-12, 34-31, and 48-46 but Model outscored the Hurricanes 22-17 in the final eight minutes to pull out the non-region win. Dane Fisher led Model with 27 points. Carson Cole followed with 10. Jeremias Heard, Derion Richardson, and Colby Couch added eight each for the Blue Devils. Kolbe Benham was the top scorer for Cartersville with 17 points. Amarai Orr was next with 12. Romo Pace contributed 11. Robert Novak finished with seven points. Kam Callahan and Jynerieus Stanley chipped in with six each. Model improved to 16-4 for the season. Cartersville (7-8, 2-4 in Region 7-AAAAA) returns to region action Friday night at home against Woodland.

For the third straight years, the Woodland Wildcats wrestling team will be hanging a GHSA State Duals Championship banner. This one was extra special coming over local Bartow County and region-rival Cass in the state championship match. Woodland took an early lead Saturday only to have the Colonels rally in the middle of the matchup to take a 24-23 advantage. Woodland then took control with five straight wins down the stretch to secure a third-consecutive ring and a 47-24 final score. Starting the title match with the 170-pound division, the Wildcats took an early 14-0 lead as Brandon Montes, Jeremiah Rhodes (182), and Jaxon Smith (195) grabbed consecutive wins for Woodland. Montes (170) won by technical fall over Tripp Adams; Rhodes won a 9-4 decision over the Colonels’ Parker Dunn, and Smith pinned Sebastian Sosa. Cass’ Noah Hoffmeier (220) needed only 0:49 to defeat Charles Higdon by pin and pick up the first points of the match for the Colonels making the score 14-6. Beau Jernigan (285) and Hayden Santora (106) of Woodland extended the Wildcats’ lead to 23-6 with the next two bouts. Jernigan pinned Sean Whatley and Santora took a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Montgomery Tompkins. The Colonels made the middle portion of the match interesting by winning the next three matchups with pin falls. Cass’ Jake Crapps (113), Cole Hunt (120), and Bryce Kresho (126) each collected six points and suddenly gave the Colonels a brief 24-23 lead with five matches remaining. Those pins came against Connor Stermer, Carson Bailey, and Easton Bishop, respectively. Woodand responded to that turn of events by taking each of the remaining five bouts. The Wildcats won four of the five by pin fall, technical fall, or major decision. Woodland’s Randy Buchanan (132) pinned Elijah Doolittle; Caden McCrary won a major decision over Adan Urizar; Caleb Henson (152) needed only 0:16 to pin Gavin Smith; and Colby Cochran (160) finished out the match with a technical fall win over Zach McKnight. In likely the most thrilling match of the finals, Woodland’s William Bishop (138) managed an escape with only 0:02 remaining in the third period to edge the Colonels’ Tyler McKnight, 10-9. To reach the title match, Woodland had wins Saturday over Walnut Grove 64-18 in the state quarterfinals and Ola 47-24 in the semifinals. Cass defeated Jackson County in the opening round 67-11 and topped Woodward Academy in the semifinals, 42-37. In Woodland’s win over Walnut Grove, Henson, Cochran, Jernigan, Santora, Stermer, Bailey, Bishop, Buchanan, and McCrary all won by pin. Against Ola, Woodland’s Henson, Smith, Jernigan, Santora, and William Bishop each won by pin while Cochran won by technical fall. Jeremiah Rhodes (182) earned a hard-fought decision, 6-3, for the Wildcats and Higdon did the same with a 10-6 decision. In the Colonels’ opening round win over Jackson County, Cass took ten of the fourteen matches by pin or technical fall. Smith, Zach McKnight, Dunn, Tompkins, Crapps, Hunt, Doolittle, and Tyler McKnight each pinned their Panthers opponent. Urizar and Kresho won by technical fall. Sebastian Sosa (195) added a 15-13 decision in the Cass win. Cass outlasted Woodward Academy in the state semifinals by only five points but forfeited the final six points to the Eagles at the 145-pound slot. Urizar, Hoffmeier, Crapps, Cole Hunt, Kresho, Doolittle, and Tyler McKnight each had important pin victories for the Colonels against Woodward.

The Adairsville High basketball teams dropped Region 6-AAA games to visiting Murray County Friday night while the Excel Eagles lost on the road at North Cobb Christian. MURRAY COUNTY 68, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 63 The Adairsville boys briefly held a lead late in the game Friday night, but couldn’t hold on in a 68-63 home loss to Murray County. The visiting Indians held leads of 26-15 at the end of the first quarter; 40-31 at halftime; and 51-47 through three quarters. Haden Newport led Murray County with 24 points. Carson Weaver and Lincoln Paryear followed with 18 and 11 points, respectively. T.J. Printup, Jr. and Tucker Deams had 15 points each for the Tigers. Zac Postell contributed 11 and Hayden Poarch added nine for Adairsville. With their win, Murray County improves to 13-5 overall and 9-3 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (9-8, 4-7) is currently sixth in the region and will host a non-region matchup with Gilmer Saturday at 5:30 p.m. MURRAY COUNTY 69, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 48 Mattie Nuckolls scored 27 points and Ella Dotson added 14 as visiting Murray County won 69-48 Friday night at Adairsville. Murray County (7-6, 5-6 in Region 6-AAA) led by ten points at halftime and maintained a 46-36 advantage at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Indians then pulled away in the final period for a 21-point region win. Lexie Childers paced Adairsville with 15 points. Autumn Henderson, Haley Stiles, and Ya’Torrean Hale finished with eight points apiece for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (5-15, 2-10) hosts Gilmer Saturday at 4 p.m. NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN 79, EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 56 The Excel Eagles matched host North Cobb Christian in the first half and went to the intermission tied 30-all Friday night in Acworth, but were outscored 30-16 in the second period in a 79-56 Region 7-A-Private loss. North Cobb Christian, led by Tre Chatman’s 19 point effort, built a 60-46 lead by the end of the third quarter and finished off the 23-point win in the final stanza. Excel had four players reach double figure scoring. Elijah Payne and Kalil Holley scored 12 points each. Blake Bailey and Rashard Doyal finished with 11 points apiece. Jack Hewett added 17 points for North Cobb Christian (8-6, 2-3) and Christian Hernandez chipped in with 10. ECA (7-11, 0-5) plays at Walker Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and will host the Wolverines Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Cartersville boys toppled Cass Friday night on a last second shot to win a thriller at the Storm Center. Earlier in the evening, the Cass girls kept their perfect season going with a dominating win over the Lady Canes. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 54, CASS 53 Cartersville’s Robert Novak hit a three-pointer with five seconds remaining Friday night to lift Cartersville to a 54-53 Region 7-AAAAA win over visiting Cass at The Storm Center. The Canes led 16-11 after one quarter and 33-20 at the intermission before the Colonels rallied behind C.J. Pipkin’s 13-point third quarter to narrow the score to 41-37. Cass took a brief lead on a Pipkin jumper with 21 seconds left but the Novak trey sealed the win for the Canes at the end. Novak finished with 20 points and Kolbe Benham added 19 for the Hurricanes. Amarai Orr chipped in with nine points for Cartersville. Pipkin finished with 27 points to lead Cass. Andrew Glaze contributed 10 points and seven rebounds for the Colonels. Braxton Benham finished with eight points and Zaylan Chaney tossed in seven. Cartersville improves to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in region play. The Canes step out of the region Saturday when they travel to Model for a 4:30 p.m. start. Cass (15-6, 5-2) travels to region-foe Hiram Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start. CASS GIRLS 63, CARTERSVILLE 28 Londaisha Smith led the Lady Colonels with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and eight steals Friday night as the Cass girls completed a regular season sweep of Cartersville 63-28. Cass led 15-8 after the opening eight minutes and built a 31-11 lead by halftime. The Lady Colonels were up 55-21 through three quarters on their way to the 35-point win. Mikaela Jackson and Makyera Baldwin scored seven points each for Cass. Claire Davis finished with six points, five rebounds, and three assists. Justice Bennett contributed five points and seven rebounds. Lehla Thomas and Jamiya Moore scored five points each for Cartersville. Thomas added seven rebounds. Kiera Milline, Sequoya McConnell, and Zoe Casey added four points each for the Lady Canes. McConnell also grabbed seven rebounds. Cass (19-0, 6-0 in Region 7-AAAAA) plays at Hiram Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a battle of the top two team in the region. Cartersville (4-11, 0-6) hosts Woodland next Friday at 7 p.m.

The Cass swim team wrapped up its 2020-21 regular season Tuesday night with a narrow victory over Woodland at the Adairsville High School pool. In Tuesday's action, Cass outdistanced Woodland by a combined score of 890-800. The Cass boys outscored the Wildcats 461-233 with the Woodland girls outscoring the Lady Colonels, 567-429. The 7-AAAAA leading Cass girls and boys basketball teams both won region home games Tuesday night over county rival Woodland in going-away fashion. The 4th-ranked Lady Colonels disposed of the Lady Cats 75-46 and the 9th-ranked Colonels eased by the Wildcats, 79-31. In other local action Tuesday, the Adairsville girls fell to 3rd ranked Coahulla Creek; both Cartersville teams dropped home region games to Hiram; and the Excel Christian boys fell to 7th-ranked Christian Heritage. CASS GIRLS 75, WOODLAND 46 The 4th-ranked Lady Colonels were quick out of the gate Tuesday night and led 26-7 after just one quarter on their way to a 41-18 halftime lead and an eventual 29-point home win over Woodland, 75-46. Claire Davis led Cass with 20 points. Haley Johnson followed with 15. Keara McDaniel and Londaisha Smith added 11 each for the Lady Colonels. Jordan Thompson paced the Lady Cats with 11 points. Three Cartersville High School seniors were named to the Class 5A All-State Team by Georgia High School Football Daily. Wide receiver Devonte Ross was selected to the Class 5A Offensive Team; defensive back Evan Slocum was selected to the Class 5A Defensive Team; and wide receiver Sam Phillips was named Honorable Mention.

All three of the local high school wrestling teams that qualified for this Saturday's GHSA Duals State Finals will be among the top four seeds in their respective tournaments. Woodland, the two-time defending state champions are the top-seed in Class AAAAA to be held at Locust Grove High School in Henry County. Cass also qualified for the Class AAAAA finals and will be the tournament's No. 3-seed. Adairsville earned a spot in the Class AAA State Finals Saturday hosted by Cherokee Bluff High School in Flowery Branch. The Tigers will be the No. 4-seed. The wrestling teams at Woodland, Cass, and Adairsville won their respective State Duals Preliminaries Saturday to reach the Final Eight State Duals Championships next Saturday. Woodland defeated Greenbrier as they hosted a Class AAAAA State Prelim. Cass had wins over North Springs and Eastside to win their Prelim and Adairsville had victories over Appling County and host Pike County to qualify for the Class AAA Elite Eight. Cartersville defeated Villa Rica Saturday, but the Canes were eliminated by Walnut Grove 48-32 in the Prelim finals. Thirteen Woodland wrestlers won by pin in the Wildcats’ Prelim finals win over Greenbrier, 78-6. The list of winners for Woodland included: Hayden Santora (106), Connor Stermer (113), Carson Bailey (120), Easton Bishop (126), Randy Buchanon (132), Colton Bishop (138), Caden McCrary (145), Brandon Montes (152), Caleb Henson (160), Cole Cochran (170), Jeremiah Rhodes (182), Jaxon Smith (195), and Champ Higdon (220). At Southwest Dekalb Saturday, Cass routed North Springs 78-6 as the Spartans only had six wrestlers participate. Cass utilized some JV wrestlers as a result. In the Prelim finals against Eastside, the Colonels won 11 of the 13 contested weight classes and racked up a 58-9 win. Eli Doolittle (132) and Gavin Smith (152) won by decision against Eastside. Noah Hoffmeier (220) won by tech fall. Sebastian Sosa (195), Sean Whatley (285), Montgomery Tompkins (106), Jake Crapps (120), Cole Hunt (126), Tyler McKnight (138), Adan Urizar (145), and Zach McKnight (160) all won by pins for the Colonels. Competing at a Class AAA State Prelim at Pike County, Adairsville advanced to next week’s state finals with a 77-6 win over Appling County and a 45-25 victory over Pike. Sixteen different wrestlers were unbeaten on the day for Adairsville including: Jaxson Owens, Dyland Smith, Isaac Linley, Jacob Pasley, RJ Bowling, Andrew Johnson, Doss Dudley, Hayden Blalock, Adam Martin, Tristan Cornett, Dalton Cornett, Westin Porter, Seth Sellers, Eddie DiCarlo, Seth Kelley, and Luke Story. In their Class AAAAA State Prelim at Villa Rica, Cartersville defeated the host Wildcats 66-13 but failed to qualify for the Final Eight with a 48-32 loss to Walnut Grove. Seven Canes went unbeaten on the day including: Eaiden Neal (106), Jaylon Whatley (113), Giles Turner (126), Rashar Locklear (170), Jairo Martinez (182), Rashun Hurst (195), and Shadre Hurst (285). Next Saturday, the Class AAAAA State Finals at Locust Grove High School will include defending state champion Woodland, Cass, Woodward Academy, Jackson County, Harris County, Walnut Grove, Ola, and Ware County. The Class AAA State Finals will take place at Cherokee Bluff High School. In addition to Adairsville, the tournament will include Greater Atlanta Christian, Gilmer, Hart County, Sonoraville, Rockmart, Morgan County, and North Hall.

The Cartersville girls and Excel Christian Academy boys picked up non-region wins Saturday while the Cartersville boys lost an overtime battle and the Woodland boys dropped their 12th straight. ——————————- CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 63, DALTON 56 Jamiya Moore scored 25 points and had five steals for Cartersville Saturday as the Lady Canes defeated Dalton at The Storm Center, 63-56. Lehla Thomas added a double-double for the Lady Canes with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ansley Griffin scored nine points. Kierra Milline dished out eight assists. Zoe Casey finished with seven points and Sequoyah McConnell added six points for Cartersville. Following a 12-12 first quarter, Cartersville grabbed a 34-21 lead by halftime. Dalton narrowed the margin to 41-36 by the end of the third quarter, but the Lady Canes held on for a seven-point win. The loss dropped Dalton to 7-6 on the season. Cartersville (4-9, 0-4 in Region 7-AAAAA) will host the top two teams in their region this week. Hiram comes to The Storm Center Tuesday at 6 p.m. Cass visits Friday night at 6 p.m. DALTON 68, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 66 (OT) In a game that remained tightly contested throughout, Dalton nipped Cartersville Saturday in overtime, 68-66. Cartersville led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter. The score was tied at halftime 35-35 and Dalton held a 52-48 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The Canes outscored the Catamounts 14-10 in the final eight minutes to send the game to overtime knotted at 62-all. Franklin Almonte scored a game-high 27 points for Dalton (9-8). Grayson Boyd followed with 15 points on five treys. Karim Page finished with 11 points and Ashton Blackwell added 10 for the Cats. Robert Novak led Cartersville with 20 points. Amarai Orr scored 14 and Kolbe Benham had 12points for the Hurricanes. Cartersville (6-6, 1-3 in 7-AAAAA) hosts Hiram Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. and Cass Friday at 8 p.m. EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 71, ATLANTA JEWISH ACADEMY 68 The Excel Christian Academy boys were behind 41-29 at halftime Saturday night and trailed by as many as 19 points in the third quarter before rallying late for a three point win at Atlanta Jewish Academy. The Eagles (7-9) were paced by Elijah Payne with 24 points. Blake Bailey and Khalil Holley followed with 19 points each. Atlanta Jewish Academy (3-4) had Noah Kalnitz post 19 points. Elliott Sokol and Simmy Wilson finished with 13 points apiece. Excel travels to Christian Heritage in Dalton Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start. The Eagles then travel to North Cobb Christian Friday and Walker Saturday. PEPPERELL 44, WOODLAND BOYS 38 The Woodland boys held a three point lead heading into the fourth quarter Saturday, but the Wildcats were outdueled 16-7 over the final eight minutes and dropped their 12th straight game at Pepperell, 44-38. Ben Whelchel and Kemp Edge led the Dragons (6-11) with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Jordan Barker led the Wildcats with 10 points. K.J. Rogers finished with eight points for Woodland (2-15).

It was a rough night on the hardwoods for six of the local high school teams. Adairsville, Cartersville, and Woodland were swept in region doubleheaders. CALHOUN 84, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 77 Calhoun’s Peyton Law made eight three-pointers and scored 31 points Friday night at The Storm Center to help lead Calhoun to an 84-77 Region 7-AAAAA win over Cartersville. Dylan Faulkner scored 18 points for the Yellow Jackets (8-8, 3-2). Blaze Hammett added 11. Robert Novak led the Canes with 25 points and eight rebounds. Kam Callahan poured in 24 points and added three assists. Amarai Orr completed a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards for Cartersville.
