The Cass Lady Colonels rang in the New Year, remained undefeated, and defeated Rockmart 76-53 Thursday night while winning the Adairsville Christmas Clash championship game. The tournament title was the second of the season for Cass and the third straight season Lady Colonels have won the Adairsville tournament. Cass also won the SMI Carroll County Christmas Tournament. Cass, who had tournament wins at Adairsville over Gordon Central and Kennesaw Mountain to reach the finals, led 15-12 after one quarter. The Lady Colonels extended their lead to 39-21 by halftime and led 58-34 heading into the final stanza. Haley Johnson, one of four Cass players named to the All-Tournament Team, led the Lady Colonels in scoring with 23 points. She also approached a triple-double by grabbing ten rebounds with nine assists. Tournament MVP Londaisha Smith scored 16 points and collected 10 rebounds in the victory. Claire Davis was named an All-Tournament selection after scoring 11 points with seven rebounds in the title game win. Rounding out the Cass scoring were Gracie Elkins and Justice Bennett with six points each. Makyera Baldwin scored five. Ariana Hames, also named to the All-Tournament squad contributed three points. Amaya Ford and Mikaela Jackson also added three points each. Keyarah Berry scored a game-high 36 points for Rockmart (6-4). Cass (12-0) opens Region 7-AAAAA play Tuesday at home against Blessed Trinity at 6 p.m.

The Cartersville boys basketball team held off a late charge from Region 7-AAAAA foe Calhoun Thursday night to win the championship game of the Adairsville Christmas Clash, 60-58. Tournament MVP Kam Callahan scored 11 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter to help lead the Canes to the win. Robert Novak contributed 17 points, including four three-pointers. Romo Pace scored eight. Luke Gambill chipped in six and Chandler Wise added four points. Cartersville led 15-7 after one period and extended the lead to 33-23 by halftime. The Yellow Jackets narrowed the Canes’ lead to 46-42 heading into the final quarter for their two-point win. Dylan Faulkner led four Calhoun players in double figures with 19 points. Blaze Hammett tossed in 14. Jake Prather and Peyton Law finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The loss drops Calhoun to 4-5 on the season. Cartersville (4-2) returns to action Saturday, January 9 with a non-region game at Cedartown. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 56, ROCKMART 50 The Adairsville boys got a bit of revenge Thursday night with a 56-50 win over Rockmart in the third place game of the Adairsville Christmas Clash. Back on December 12 at Rockmart, the Yellow Jackets won a Region 6-AAA game over Adairsville 62-60. Although the Tigers’ holiday tournament win won’t count in the region standings, it levels the season series between the two region mates. The two teams are schedule to meet again on the region schedule February 12. Adairsville held an 18-14 lead after one quarter and led 28-26 at halftime, but Rockmart gained the lead at 39-37 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final eight minutes, Adairsville outscored the Jackets 19-11 to escape with a six-point win. T.J. Printup, Jr. led all scorers in the contest with 30 points. Tre Mitchell added 11 for Adairsville. Rockmart (4-6) was led by Javin Whatley’s 17 points. Jakari Clark scored 11 for the Yellow Jackets. The Cartersville girls have now won two straight games after an 0-5 start to their season following a 59-39 win over Gordon Central in the fifth place game of the Adairsville Christmas Clash Thursday afternoon. The Excel Christian Academy boys came up on the short end of the boys consolation final, falling to Temple 66-41. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 59, GORDON CENTRAL 39 The Lady Canes won the consolation finals of the Adairsville Christmas Clash Thursday afternoon by defeating Gordon Central, 59-39. Cartersville, winners of two straight after an 0-5 start, got 17 points from Ansley Griffen and 11 points from Kierra Milline. Milline along with Ari Olotu dished out five assists. Sequoya McConnell added eight points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Canes. Lexi Henderson and Lehla Thomas aso scored eight points each. Taff Bradley contributed seven points and Aujyhnae Davenport added two. The Hurricanes led 15-6 after one quarter; 34-25 at the intermission; and 39-27 heading into the final period. The Adairsville girls and the Mount Paran Christian boys won the seventh place games Thursday at the Adairsville Christmas Clash. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 43, WOODLAND 33 The Adairsville girls struggle through a rough first half Thursday, but roared back in the second half to win the seventh place game at the Adairsville Christmas Clash. The Lady Tigers were shutout 11-0 in the first quarter and trailed the Lady Cats 22-7 at halftime before finding a solution in the second half. Adairsville outscored Woodland 17-4 in the third quarter and 19-5 in the fourth quarter for an eventual 43-33 win. Haley Stiles was the top scorer for the Lady Tigers with 12 points. The two teams swapped leads in the first half with the Eagles leading 17-12 after one quarter and the Wildcats leading 25-23 at halftime. Mount Paran grabbed a 38-35 lead at the end of the third quarter and held off Woodland down the stretch for a seven-point win. Dylan Benifield scored a game-high 15 points to lead Mount Paran (3-9). K.J. Rogers paced Woodland with 12 points. Diaz Garrett and Alejandro Mays scored nine each. Troy Poche contributed seven points. Jordan Baker added three points and Tyler Thurman scored two. Warner Robins scored five unanswered touchdowns in the second and third quarters Wednesday afternoon and held off the Cartersville Hurricanes 62-28 to win the 2020 GHSA Class AAAAA state championship game at Georgia State University's Center Parc Stadium. The Demons, who were playing in their fourth consecutive state title game, finally broke through to win the school’s fifth state title all-time and their first since 2004. Warner Robins put up 601 yards of total offense and tied a 49-year-old state record for points in a GHSA championship game with 62. The Demons scored touchdowns on nine of their first 10 possessions, failing only when they intercepted a pass with 5 seconds left in the first half and took a knee. Things started well for Cartersville when Sam Phillips took the opening kickoff back 94 yards in the game’s first 14 seconds. Oscar Hernandez booted the first of his four PATs and the Canes held an early 7-0 lead. That advantage was short-lived however. Warner Robins’ ensuing drive was capped with a one-yard touchdown run by Ahmad Walker with 6:40 remaining in the first quarter and tied the score at 7-7 after Daniel Barber’s extra point kick. The two teams swapped touchdown drives again at the end of the first quarter and the opening of the second period. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson connected with Devonte Ross for a 26-yard Cartersville touchdown with 3:43 remaining in the first period, but the Demons marched right back down the field to tie the game again on the opening play of the second quarter. Warner Robins’ quarterback Jalen Addie tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Malcom Brown to cap an 84-yard drive that made the score 14-14 just seven seconds into the second period. On the Canes’ ensuing possession, Del Rio-Wilson was picked off and that began the Demons’ unanswered string of scores. Addie had a 29-yard touchdown pass to Kaleb Howard and a pair of 5-yard touchdown runs to cap Demon drives of 34, 74, and 72 yards to close out the first half with a 35-14 advantage. With the opening drive of the second half, Warner Robins scored in five plays capping an 84-yard effort. Jahlen Rutherford scored on a 10-yard run for a 42-14 lead for the Demons. Cartersville’s next scoring play came with 4:42 left in the third quarter. Del Rio-Wilson tossed a 22-yard scoring pass to Evan Slocum that narrowed the margin to 42-21. Warner Robins (13-1) closed out their scoring with three more touchdowns in the second half. Addie added a pair of nine yard touchdown runs and connected with Daveon Walker on a 56-yard touchdown pass for a 62-21 lead. Cartersville wrapped up all the scoring in a running clock fourth quarter with a one-yard plunge at the 2:20 mark by Quante Jennings. That made the final score 62-28. Addie finished 16-for-18 passing for 259 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for three scores and 107 yards. Rutherford led the Demons’ rushing attack with 143 yards on 21 carries. For Cartersville (12-2), Del Rio-Wilson finished 15-for-26 for 225 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 17 yards. Jennings ran for 51 yards and one touchdown. Ross and Phillips both had four receptions for 60 and 48 yards, respectively. Brynen Wilkins caught three passes for 67 yards and Kyler Johnson contributed three receptions for 28 yards.

The Cass girls won their eleventh straight game to start the season and reached the Adairsville Ace Christmas Clash championship game with a 55-43 win over Kennesaw Mountain Wednesday night. The Lady Colonels broke open a tight semifinal game in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Lady Mustangs 18-9 over the final eight minutes. Cass led 15-8 after one quarter; 25-24 at halftime; and 37-34 heading into the fourth quarter. Claire Davis scored 16 points to lead Cass. Ariana Hames and Londaisha Smith followed with 12 points each. Haley Johnson finished with five points. Gracie Elkins posted four points. Amaya Ford and Keara McDaniel added three points apiece. The visiting Yellow Jackets led 42-37 at the intermission and were ahead 68-67 through three quarters. Dylan Faulkner scored 27 points to lead Calhoun. The Cass boys basketball team won the Campbell Holiday Classic Wednesday night by defeating the host Spartans in the championship game 85-60. The Colonels reached the title game with wins Monday and Tuesday over Carver-Atlanta and Hiram. Cass led 18-16 after one quarter as C.J. Pipkin scored seven points in the period. The Colonels extended their lead to 44-31 at halftime and 60-48 through three quarters. Junior Zaylan Chaney, who finished with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds, scored 10 points for Cass in the second quarter. Four other Colonels reached double figures in scoring including Andrew Glaze with 15 points and six rebounds, Pipkin with 13 points and seven boards, Ethan McIntyre scored 13 points and finished with eight rebounds while Braxton Benham contributed 12 points, eight assists, and four steals. David Clark led Campbell with 17 points. Jeremiah Wilkinson and Ahmir Crum followed with 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the Spartans (4-5). Chaney was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Benham, Pipkin, and Glaze were all named to the All-Tournament Team. The Cartersville boys and girls both collected tournament victories Wednesday in early games at the Adairsville Ace Christmas Clash. The Hurricanes cruised to a 75-42 semifinal win over Rockmart, playing in a morning game scheduled to accommodate fans wanting to attend the Cartersville football state championship game in Atlanta. The Lady Canes won a nail biter over Woodland in the day's opening game, 39-36, to earn their first win of the year. In afternoon consolation round action, the Adairsville girls lost a 65-44 decision to Gordon Central. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 75, ROCKMART 42 The Hurricanes raced to a 26-17 lead over Rockmart in the first quarter Wednesday in an Adairsville Ace Christmas Clash semifinal and added to their lead the rest of the way in a 33-point win. Cartersville led 45-30 at halftime and had built a 59-32 lead by the end of the third quarter. Kam Callahan led the Canes’ offensive attack with 19 points. Former Cartersville High School and current Clemson University quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, has been named First Team All-American for the 2020 season.

The Woodland and Cass wrestling teams competed this week at the prestigious Knockout Christmas Classic in Kissimmee, Florida with both teams earning top ten finishes. Woodland finished third and Cass placed ninth in a field of 52 teams from across the nation. Tuttle (Oklahoma) won the team championship with 215.5 points. Baylor (Tennessee) was runner-up with 197.5 and Woodland was next with 153.5 points. Rounding out the top ten were Jesuit (Florida), Palmetto Ridge (Florida), South Dade (Florida), Southwest Miami (Florida), Cass, and Woodward Academy. Woodland had three individual champions: Caleb Henson (154), Cole Cochran (160), and Jaxon Smith (197). Caden McCrary (140) collected a third place finish. The Adairsville boys basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Adairsville Ace Christmas Clash with an easy 87-54 win over visiting Woodland. After the two teams battled to a 36-36 tie at halftime, the Tigers pulled away in the third quarter to take a 65-46 lead and then held on for a 33-point win. T.J. Printup scored a game-high 25 points for Adairsville. Tucker Deams contributed 17 points and Tre Mitchell added 15 points in the Tigers’ win. Diaz Garrett led Woodland with 20 points. K.J. Rogers scored 12 for the Wildcats. Woodland (2-6) will play in the consolation bracket Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. against Temple. Adairsville (5-3) advances to the semifinals to face Calhoun Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets defeated Temple in the opening round, 60-43. KENNESAW MOUNTAIN 53, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 40 (overtime) The Adairsville girls trailed throughout most of regulation Tuesday night but outscored Kennesaw Mountain 15-9 in the fourth quarter to send the first round game of the Adairsville Ace Christmas Clash into overtime tied 38-all. Unfortunately for the hosts, the visiting Lady Mustangs pulled away in the four minute overtime period to win 53-40. Madison Clark led Kennesaw Mountain with 17 points. J Bates and Shanique Reid followed with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Lexie Childers led Adairsville with 12 points. Haley Stiles followed with 11. Makayla Wade and Autumn Henderson contributed six points each. Ya’Torrean Hale added four for the Lady Tigers. Kennesaw Mountain (6-2) advances to Wednesday’s semifinals to play Cass at 4 p.m. Adairsville (2-8) will face Gordon Central in the consolation bracket Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The Cass boys put together one of their best defensive efforts of the year Tuesday night in the semifinals and advanced to the championship game of the Campbell Holiday Classic with a 66-35 win over Hiram. The matchup of Region 7-AAAAA teams will not count in the region standings, but was the first of at least three matchups between the teams in the 2020-21 season. The two clubs will have regular season, home-and-home games and could even potentially meet a fourth time in the region tournament at the end of the season. The Colonels were fast out of the gate Tuesday and took a 24-9 lead after the first eight minutes. Cass held a 35-21 lead at halftime and carried a 53-29 advantage to the final quarter. “On a night when we didn’t shoot it very well, the guys did a fantastic job of defending and blocking out,” said a pleased Sean Glaze after the game. “Braxton (Benham) was tremendous in taking care of the ball and getting us into the flow of our offense.” Benham did more than that. The 6-foot senior guard poured in 26 points and had three steals to help lead the Colonels. Benham made four three-pointers in accumulating the game-high total. Zaylan Chaney contributed 14 points and had 11 rebounds for a double-double while C.J. Pipkin added 10 points with five rebounds. Rounding out the Cass scoring were Ethan McIntyre with six points. Andrew Glaze finished with five. Jackson Hale had three and Sacovie White added two for the Colonels. Jayden Clark led the Hornets (5-4) with 14 points. CASS GIRLS 72, GORDON CENTRAL 26 The Cass girls won their tenth straight game to open the 2020-21 season Tuesday afternoon by routing Gordon Central 72-26 in the opening round of the Adairsville Ace Christmas Clash. The Lady Colonels led 20-9 after one quarter; 39-18 at halftime; and were up 65-24 through three quarters on their way to a comfortable 46-point win. Londaisha Smith led Cass with 13 points. She was followed by Claire Davis and Gracie Elkins with 12 each. Zion Hayes, Haley Johnson, and Justice Bennett finished with seven points apiece. Ariana Hames and Makyera Baldwin tossed in four each. Amaya Ford and Tatianna Christian contributed three points apiece and Keara McDaniel added one for the Lady Colonels.
