As expected, the region alignments established Tuesday by the Georgia High School Association for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years put Cartersville, Cass, and Woodland all in a new Region 7-AAAAA. Joining the three local schools will be Blessed Trinity, Calhoun, Hiram, and Northview to form a seven-member region. Adairsville was placed in a nine-member Region 6-AAA and will be joined by Coahulla Creek, LaFayette, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Murray County, North Murray, Ringgold, Rockmart, and Sonoraville. The committee determined that the next meeting will be Tuesday, November 19 at 9 a.m. in the GHSA office in Thomaston. Appeals for schools wishing a lateral transfer to another region within the same classification will be heard at that time. The fifth local school, Excel Christian Academy, will be placed in a Class A Private region. The non-football private schools were not assigned in Tuesday’s meeting, but a logical placement for ECA would be with Christian Heritage, Darlington, Mt Paran, North Cobb Christian, and Walker.

Three Bartow County Panthers teams will be in action this Saturday at Woodland High School in the Northwest Georgia Youth Football League playoffs. The 9U Panthers are the top-seed in their playoffs, while the 10U and 12U Panthers will open the playoffs at No. 2-seeds. The playoff triple-header begins at 11 a.m. Saturday. 10U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 47, ACWORTH WARRIORS ORANGE 12 The 10U Bartow County Panthers wrapped up their regular season Saturday with a convincing 47-12 win over Acworth Warriors Orange. ​​ The 10U Panthers had six different players score touchdowns and two others scored extra points in the convincing win. Demarcus Ballenger, Grayson Warmack, Jake Orton, Micah Pittman, and Ayden Noland all had touchdown runs for the Panthers. Warmack added a pick six interception return for a score and the defense opened the scoring with a safety. Lawson Weeks and Eli Simmons converted extra point runs. The 10U Bartow County Panthers finished the regular season with an 8-1 record and will host Acworth Warriors Blue this Saturday at 11 a.m. at Woodland High School in the opening round of the Division 2 playoffs. 12U DOUGLASVILLE TIGER CUBS 13, BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 0 The 12U Bartow County Panthers were shutout for the first time all season and lost to the visiting Douglasville Tiger Cubs for the second time this past Saturday as the two Northwest Georgia Youth Football League teams settled the regular season title at Cunningham Stadium. The Tiger Cubs scored on a pair of big plays in the first half and kept the Bartow County offense off the scoreboard. Douglasville scored on a long pass play and a long run, but otherwise was limited to 155 total yards (98 rushing, 57 passing). The Panthers rushing game was held to only 63 yards and quarterback Brodie McWhorter finished 7 of 15 for 49 yards with one interception. Jacob Ellis led the running backs with 35 yards on six carries. Keve Porter caught four passes for 33 yards. Ellis led the Bartow defense with six tackles. Jachai Delgado and Baylon Long had 4.5 each. Kelson Mitchell made four stops. Logan Shrewsbury finished with 3.5 tackles. Bear McWhorter had three tackles. Isaiah Livsey contributed two tackles. Cooper Moon, Bryce Wilson, Brodie McWhorter, and Porter added one stop each. The 12U Bartow County Panthers finished the NWGYFL regular season with a 6-2 mark and will host the Winston Knights Saturday at Woodland High School in the league playoffs with a 3 p.m. kickoff. 9U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS OPEN PLAYOFFS AS TOP SEED The top seeded 9U Bartow County Panthers will host the Ross Longhorns Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Woodland High School as they begin the NWGYFL playoffs. The 9U Panthers (8-0) defeated Ross 29-7 back in September during regular season play. The Panthers had a first round bye in the playoffs. Ross won its playoff opener this past Saturday over the Bill Arp Falcons, 20-0. Former Adairsville star Vic Beasley and the Atlanta Falcons rallied following a bye week and shocked the Saints in New Orleans Sunday, 26-9. The former Clemson All-American and NFL first round pick had a big day that included 1.5 sacks. In Saturday's college action, current Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence established a new mark for Tigers' quarterbacks by throwing for at least three touchdowns in five consecutive games. Saturday, Watson had seven points, six rebounds, and two assists in a start and 82-53 win at Erskine College. Both games were part of the Peach Belt/Conference Carolinas Challenge. UNG (2-0) hosts Emmanuel College Wednesday night and travels to Southern Wesleyan University Saturday.

Although it will not become official until Monday afternoon, head coach Eric Bishop of the Adairsville Tigers football team if pretty confident his team will be playing Friday night in the Class AAA state playoffs. "If it tells you anything, we've had coaching staff meetings, we've swapped film, and we're getting ready. We feel that strongly that we're in. It's not like we're sitting back until Monday waiting on this. ... It will be a shock if we're not [in]," Bishop told The Daily Tribune News Saturday. Adairsville will be receiving the final berth in the Class AAA state playoffs. The at-large berth is based on the GHSA's Power Ratings formula and becomes necessary because of a rule intended to get the best pool of teams possible into the playoffs. In Class AAA, Region 1-AAA only has four teams. Without the at-large rule, all four of those teams would automatically be in the playoffs each year. The rule states that if any fifth place team from another region has a better Power Rating than Region 1-AAA's fourth place team, then the highest ranked fifth place team takes the final spot from Region 1-AAA. As of the Sunday afternoon updates, the fourth place team in 1-AAA -- Worth County -- has a power rating of 6.90. Adairsville, the fifth place team in 6-AAA, has a power rating of 10.27. The other six fifth-place teams across all the other regions trail Adairsville in the power ratings. Those teams include: SE Bulloch (9.28), Cherokee Bluff (9.26), Redan (8.87), Jackson Co. (8.24), Central-Macon (8.00), and Tattnall County (7.13). GHSA is waiting until an appeals process can be held Monday morning to announce the at-large bid. Adairsville, though, is not waiting until then to find out if the team's season has been extended at least one more week. In fact, the Tigers, who were actually off the final week of the regular season, have already started their prep work for a potential first-round matchup with Region 3-AAA champion Jenkins. "We feel confident enough that we are in that we have traded film and begun preparation on playing at Jenkins," said Bishop. "We don't know where that game will take place, but we do know it will be Friday at 7:30 — if we're confirmed by GHSA." Savannah-Chatham County Schools share several stadiums. According to Bishop, the game will either take place at Memorial Stadium in Savannah or Pooler Stadium in Pooler, which is approximately 13 miles west of Savannah. "I feel like we're in," Bishop surmised. "I've been in this business 27 years, so I know crazy things happen. It just makes you a little cautious." Cartersville tied the state record for consecutive regular season wins Friday night with a 45-35 victory at Troup, while Cass finished the season with a road win at Paulding County, 51-25. Woodland dropped a 51-7 decision at home to Kell and Adairsville -- although idle Friday night -- is in position to receive the Class AAA "at-large" berth in the state playoffs once any appeals are heard over the weekend regarding the GHSA's Power Ratings. Cartersville will start the Class AAAA state playoffs at home next Friday night while it appears Adairsville will travel to Savannah to take on Region 3-AAA champ, Jenkins. Final confirmation of the Power Ratings will not be released by GHSA until Monday afternoon. CARTERSVILLE 45, TROUP 35 The Cartersville Hurricanes went back-and-forth Friday night with Troup at Callaway Stadium in LaGrange, but held on to defeat the Tigers 45-35 to complete a fifth-consecutive undefeated regular season. The win ties the state record for consecutive regular season wins at 58 straight. Meanwhile, Denmark defeated Flowery Branch in Region 7-AAAA action and that will send Flowery Branch to Weinman Stadium next Friday for the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs. Cartersville, the region champions and No. 1 seed from Region 5-AAAA will host the Falcons for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The back-and-forth battle Friday night at Troup saw the lead change hands four times with three ties, including a 21-21 score at the intermission. Evan Slocum put Cartersville on the scoreboard less than three minutes into the game. His nine-yard run capped a methodical Canes’ drive. The PAT kick by Oscar Hernandez put the Hurricanes up 7-0. Troup tied the game on a Trey Williams one-yard plunge on the Tigers’ next possession. Then the hosts took their first lead following a blocked punt and another short scoring run by Williams. This time it was a nine-yard run with 0:11 remaining in the opening quarter to give the Tigers a 14-7 advantage. Cartersville responded with a 75-yard drive that was capped with a one-yard touchdown run by Harrison Allen, but Troup went back ahead with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Kobe Hudson to Marquavious Kelley. In the final minute of the first half, Tee Webb (top photo) connected with Devonte Ross (photo right) for a 10-yard touchdown pass that tied the game at halftime, 21-21. The Canes recaptured the lead late in the third quarter and would not trail again. Hernandez booted a 24-yard field goal to give Cartersville a 24-21 lead with 4:56 remaining in the third quarter. On the next Cartersville possession, Webb escaped on a 53-yard scoring run and the Hurricanes led 31-21 with 2:23 left in the period. Kobe Hudson pulled the Tigers back to within three points at 31-28 with a six-yard touchdown run, but back-to-back touchdowns by the Canes would give Cartersville a three-score lead. Webb connected with Kyler Johnson for a 51-yard touchdown with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter and Allen scored on a 13-yard run with 3:24 remaining in the fourth quarter for a Canes’ 45-28 advantage. Troup scored on a 29-yard pass with 0:12 left in the game for a 45-35 final score. The Tigers finished the regular season with a 6-4 mark and must travel to Blessed Trinity next Friday for the opening round of the state playoffs. Cartersville (10-0) will host Flowery Branch (7-3). CASS 51, PAULDING COUNTY 25 Colonels’ running back David Gbadie (photo) scored three touchdowns on runs of 19, 20, and 21 yards as Cass closed out its 2019 season with a 51-25 win Friday night at Paulding County. The two teams traded the lead in the first half, but Cass built a 51-17 lead by the middle of the fourth quarter for the Colonels’ fourth win of the year. Paulding County took a 7-0 lead and a 14-7 lead on big plays in the first quarter. Brayden Maulding hit Keishon Jackson on the first play of the game for an 80-yard touchdown pass that had the Patriots up 7-0. Then after Gbadie tied the score with the first of his three scoring runs, Smael Mondon sprinted to an 89-yard Paulding touchdown run on the first play of the Patriots’ next possession. Cass kicker Kaleb Speights made a 38-yard field goal with 10:51 to go in the second quarter to narrow the Patriots’ lead to 14-10 and then Cass grabbed its first lead with the first of two pick-six interception returns on the night. Tanayce Calhoun’s 26-yard interception and return for touchdown gave Cass a 17-14 lead with 9:13 left in the first half, but Paulding kicker Matthew Frey made a 23-yard field goal to knot the score at 17-all with 2:03 remaining in the second quarter. Gbadie’s second touchdown run — this time a 21-yarder — gave Cass a halftime lead of 24-17 at the intermission. Cass went up 31-17 on a 20-yard scoring jaunt by Gbadie four minutes into the third quarter and then Zay Jackson struck twice as the Colonels took control. Jackson had a two-yard touchdown catch that was almost immediately followed by a 55-yard pick-six interception return for a touchdown that gave the Colonels a 45-17 lead with 4:31 left in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Triston Mize found Calhoun for a touchdown pass that made the score 51-17 and Paulding County scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion with just over three minutes remaining in the game for a 51-25 final score. With the loss, Paulding County finished the season 3-7 overall and 2-6 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass finished the year 4-6 overall and 3-5 in region action. KELL 51, WOODLAND 7 Kell’s Tyler Barrett scored four touchdowns on runs of 5, 2, 4, and 65-yards as the Longhorns cruised to a 51-7 win Friday night at Woodland. In addition to Barrett’s big night, Kell got touchdown runs by David Mbadinga and quarterback Corbin LaFrance. LaFrance also connected with Jaylon Brown for a 21-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter as the Longhorns built a 30-0 halftime lead with Colby Kearns’ 44-yard field goal on the final play of the second quarter. Demarcus Williams (photo, #23) scored the lone Woodland touchdown. His one-yard run finished off a 79-yard drive that took 14 plays in the fourth quarter. Allan Pineda made the Wildcats’ PAT kick. Kell (8-2), the third seed from Region 7-AAAAA in next week’s state playoffs, is ranked No. 10 in Class AAAAA and will play Friday night at the No. 2-seed from Region 5-AAAAA, Columbia. It's the final week of the 2019 high school football regular season. Here's a quick snapshot of this week's games for the local teams. CARTERSVILLE HURRICANES (9-0, 5-0) at TROUP TIGERS (6-3, 3-2) The Hurricanes have already clinched the 2019 Region 5-AAAA championship and will host a first round state playoff game next November 15 at Weinman Stadium. First, Cartersville must wrap up the regular season against likely playoff bound Troup. (A Chapel Hill upset of Cedartown Friday night in Polk County could create a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots.) The Purple Hurricanes have won all five games in this series including last season’s 43-10 win at home. The Tigers have a 10.20 power rating in the GHSA system which is ahead of all the other regions’ fifth place teams and well ahead of fourth place Worth County of Region 1-AAA who will not qualify since the region only has four teams. Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe could throw a wrinkle in the power rating scenario for Adairsville with a win Friday night at Calhoun. That would leap-frog LFO to fourth and drop Sonoraville to fifth. The Phoenix currently have a 10.80 power rating and beat Adairsville head-to-head. Sonoraville plays at region-leader North Murray Friday night. KELL LONGHORNS (7-2, 5-2) at WOODLAND WILDCATS (1-8, 0-7) The Wildcats will wrap up their 2019 campaign Friday night at home with the difficult task of trying to snap an eight-game losing skid against the 10th-ranked Longhorns. Kell, who has locked up a No. 3-seed from Region 7-AAAAA, is ranked No. 10 in the classification and only has losses to the top two teams in the region — Carrollton and Rome. Woodland will recognize their seniors. Paulding has won six in a row in the series including last year’s 17-14 victory at “The Doug.” In all, the Patriots have won 15 of the last 16 against the Colonels. The 12U Bartow County Panthers football team defeated the visiting Chattanooga Ravens 31-8 Saturday afternoon at Adairsville High School. The Panthers, who will play for the Northwest Georgia Youth Football League regular season title Saturday, took control early in the win over Chattanooga and cruised to a 23-point victory. 12U Bartow rolled up 141 rushing yards in the game on 28 attempts and added another 110 passing yards. Brodie McWhorter was 8-for-15 through the air with a pair of touchdown passes and no interceptions. He also ran for 11 yards and a touchdown on three attempts. Meanwhile Keve Porter led the 12U Panthers’ rushing attack with 88 yards on seven carries. Isaiah Livsey finished with 27 yards and one touchdown on seven rushing attempts. Jacob Ellis had 10 yards and one touchdown on five carries. Cooper Moon totaled eight yards on three attempts, while Kelson Mitchell, Josh Love, and Bailey Berry each had one rushing attempt. Talan Nix led the Panthers’ receiving corp with four catches for 73 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Porter added 27 yards on two receptions. Ellis made one catch for 10 yards, and Logan Shrewsbury had one reception. The Bartow defense was dominant, limited the Ravens to -34 rushing yards and only 11 yards passing. ​​ Ellis led the Panthers’ defense with nine total tackles, three forced fumbles, and two quarterback sacks. Jachai Delgado followed with 3.5 tackles and one fumble recovery with Livsey also compiling 3.5 tackles. Other individual tackle numbers for Bartow included: Mitchell with three tackles, Porter 2.5, Nix 1.5, Bryce Wilson and Judd Hyde one tackle each. Shrewsbury, Moon, and Xavier Parker contributed .5 tackle each. Davis Waddell and Mason Tompkins each recovered a fumble. The 12U Bartow County Panthers host the Douglasville Tiger Cubs Saturday at Cunningham Stadium (Grassdle Rd. / Old Cass HS) at 4 p.m. The game will decide the regular season championship. The Panthers (7-1, 6-1) have alread secured a spot in the league semifinals the following week. In the playoffs, Bartow will host the Marietta Cardinals with a win this week or the Winston Knights with a loss. 10U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 55, ACWORTH WARRIORS BLUE 0 Jeremy Dent and Jake Orton scored three touchdowns each Saturday as the 10U Bartow County Panthers blanked Acworth Warriors Blue 55-0. Dent caught a 70 yard touchdown pass from Grayson Warmack and had rushing touchdowns from 65 and 10 yards. Orton scored touchdown runs from 65 and10 yards out and ran in a punt blocked by Tremon Buckner from 40 yards. Demarcus Ballenger contributed a 45 yard touchdown run and Clay Hilburn scored a Panthers’ touchdown on a 45 yard strip and score during kickoff coverage. 10U Bartow added three extra points by Lawson Weeks, one by Dent, and PAT pass from Warmack to Hilburn. Buckner and Warmack were selected as the defensive standouts for the contest. Hilburn added a fumble recovery. 10U Bartow finished second in the NWGYFL D2 standings with a 7-1 mark. The 10U Panthers open the playoffs Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Acworth Orange Warriors. 9U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 60, BOUNDARY WATERS COYOTES 8 Eight different players scored touchdowns this past Saturday as the 9U Bartow County Panthers routed the Boundary Waters Coyotes 60-8. The win enabled the 9U Panthers to finish the Northwest Georgia Youth Football League regular season with an 8-0 record and secured a first round bye for Bartow in the first round of the NWGYFL playoffs. Quarterback Trace Hawkins was 3-for-7 passing for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Kayden Blackwell caught a 22 yard touchdown pass and Lance Tippett hauled in a 14 yard scoring pass. Javious Davis had the other Bartow reception with a 25 yard catch. Bartow rushing touchdowns included a 45 yarder by Hawkins, a 35 yarder by Kaiden Kent, a 35 yarder by J’Tayvious Whatley, a 26 yarder by Solomon James, and a 4 yard scoring run by Davis. In addition, Cooper Melvin had one carry for 30 yards and Javien Finney added a 27 yard gain on one attempt. Bartow added a 65 yard fumble recovery and return for a touchdown by Melvin. The fumble was forced by Raymond Woodard, Jr. Blackwell also added a 55 yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half. “Our (offensive) line played a great game and we were able to show them some love by letting them run in multiple extra points,” said 9U Bartow County Panthers coach Quintin Kent. “Nathan Woods, Christopher Parker, Will Thomas and Buddy Lilly all were able to get successful (PAT) conversions.” The big offensive day enabled the 9U Panthers to finish first in the NWGYFL in points scored with 29.4 points per game. The defense allowed only 21 points in those same eight games for a 2.7 points per game average. In the shutout of Boundary Waters, Melvin paced the defense with 11 tackles. Kent followed with seven. James, J’Tayvious Whatley, Davis, Woodard, Parker, and C.J. McClendon contributed three tackles apiece. Nathan Woods and Blackwell finished with two stops each. Tippett and Jahari Whatley added one tackle each. The 9U Bartow County Panthers will play next in the second round of the NWGYFL playoffs against the first round winner of Ross Elite Longhorns and Bill Arp Falcons. Former Cartersville High School tight end and quarterback, Miller Forristall, was injured in Saturday’s game with Arkansas and is now expected to miss several weeks. The announcement was made this past week in a teleconference with head coach Nick Saban. Forristall, a redshirt junior tight end for the second-ranked Crimson Tide, played the entire Arkansas game and caught two passes. Saban said the injury was discovered after the game. Forristall suffered a hit to his throat that will now sideline him. According to comments by Saban in the conference call, Forristall was examined by doctors during the game and was sent back in. The injury was to his voice box and required surgery. It will keep him out for approximately six weeks and the former Hurricane will miss the remainder of the regular season. Forristall has three touchdown receptions this season and has dealt with his fair share of medical situations during his career. Bama tight ends Major Tennison, Cameron Latu, Giles Amos, and Jahlel Billingsley are behind Forristall on the depth chart with Tennison likely receiving the first look. Another option is Chris Owens who has been used as an extra blocker at times in the tight end spot. Forristall could be ready to return in time for the College Football Playoffs if Alabama is selected.

The Georgia High School Association released reclassification alignment numbers today for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years. The numbers, which include a 2.0 multiplier applied to out-of-district enrollment students, place three of the five local schools in the Class AAAAA classification. Cartersville, Cass, and Woodland are all in the same classification which includes reclassification counts between just over 2,100 to 1,363. The classification also counts 56 total schools which would mean region assignments by geographic location will ideally include six to eight schools. Cartersville is listed with 1,467 in-district and 279 out-of-district students for a 1,746 total. With the multiplier, it is the largest local school in terms of reclassification applied numbers. Woodland is the next local school on the list with 1,489 in-district and 85 out-of-district for 1,574. Cass has 1,486 in-district and 35 out-of-district for a 1,521 total. Cartersville is the 16th largest school in the classification by reclassification count. Woodland is 38th and Cass is 45th of the 56 schools. The largest school in Class AAAAA by reclassification count is Woodward Academy at 2,112. It is more than 300 students larger than the next two schools — Dutchtown and Forest Park at 1,802. Although Cass is the 12th smallest school in the classification, the Bartow school’s reclassification count is less than 80 more than the smallest in the classification — Walnut Grove (1,444) and Mt. Zion-Jonesboro (1,445). Based on logical geographic placement, the schools that would appear to fit with the three local schools for a region would include: Calhoun (1,481), Hiram (1,552), Villa Rica (1,651), and Kell (1,687). Chapel Hill (1,607) and Lithia Springs (1,627) are additional options if the region reaches further south. Geographic regions will be established after schools have had an opportunity to appeal their classification placement. The appeals must be submitted by November 11 at 4 p.m. Hearings will be held Tuesday, November 12 regarding appeals and to hear from schools wishing to opt up in classification. Adairsville, with a reclassification count of 979 (954 in-district / 25 out-of-district) will remain in Class AAA where the school ranks 48th in size of 56 schools. Other schools within reasonable geographic range of Adairsville include Coahulla Creek (1,163; 67 out-of-district), Lafayette (1,133; 18 out-of-district), Sonoraville (1,122; 42 out-of-district), Murray County (1,076; 14 out-of-district), Lakeview-Ft.Oglethorpe (1,076; 63 out-of-district), Ringgold (1,070; 15 out-of-district), North Murray (1,023; 16 out-of-district), and Rockmart (972; 11 out-of-district). That entire list would result in a nine-school region which is not likely with 56 schools in the entire AAA classification. Rockmart is the southern-most school listed and speculation would likely send the Yellow Jackets to a region further south. That would leave seven former members of the current 6-AAA plus the addition of Lafayette. The largest school in Class AAA is Salem with a reclassification count of 1,191 (7 out-of-district). The smallest school currently assigned to AAA is Westside-Augusta with a reclassification count of 941 (76 out-of-district). Meanwhile, Excel Christian Academy is not effected by the reclassification numbers or out-of-district multiplier. The GHSA rules do not allow schools in Class A to be moved up in classification. The rules also do not allow schools in Class 6A to be moved into Class 7A due to the multiplier. Excel is once again the smallest member school of GHSA’s Private School Class A division with 35 total students in grades 9-12. (Woody Gap and Georgia School for the Deaf are smaller, but are in the Public School Class A division.) Class A Private has 54 total schools. Holy Innocents’ is the largest with a reclassification count of 924. A sample of Class A Private schools in proximity to Excel include: Darlington, Mt. Paran, North Cobb Christian, Walker, Christian Heritage, and others. Next Tuesday’s meeting will bring some additional clarity to the region assignments. Schools choosing to “play-up” in classification will be determined and then Classifications 6A through 2A will be evenly distributed again. This means one or two of the largest or smallest schools in the current classification assignment listings could be altered. The GHSA Office will initially place schools in regions (and sub-regions if needed). The Reclassification Committee will then meet again this month to determine the final placement of schools. The decisions will be made public after that meeting. At that point, member schools will have seven days to request a lateral move to another region. Appeals will be heard in December. Any appeals denied by the Reclassification Committee in December will have a final appeal available in early January before the entire Executive Committee.

It is that busy time each year when Fall and Winter collegiate sports overlap. This week’s edition of Athletes Beyond Bartow includes updates for football, volleyball, soccer, swimming, and basketball. A pair of former Woodland Wildcats had notable weeks on the college gridiron. Junior defensive end Emmanuel Jones (photo) had six tackles and a quarterback hurry in Colorado State’s win over UNLV while sophomore offensive lineman Kurtis Feanny helped lead the 7th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne Bears to 369 yards of total offense and a key conference win. College soccer and volleyball teams are approaching conference tournaments and post-season play, while swimming and basketball have started with wrestling teams also launching their seasons. COLLEGE FOOTBALL CHRIS BLACKSTON — University of West Georgia (Sr., DB, Adairsville HS)… made six tackles and broke up one pass as the Wolves defeated visiting Mississippi College Saturday in Carrollton, 35-21. UWG (6-3, 4-2) travels to Cleveland, Mississippi Saturday to take on Delta State in another Gulf South Conference contest. MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois University (R-Jr., QB, Adairsville HS)… started the game but shared time beginning in the first quarter as the Huskies fell behind 14-0 early in a 48-10 loss at Central Michigan. Childers returned in the fourth quarter and finished the contest 1-for-2 passing for 8 yards. He had 19 yards rushing on seven attempts. NIU (3-6, 2-3 Mid American Conference) has a bye week before traveling to Toledo for a Wednesday night game on ESPN2 game November 13. JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC-Charlotte (So., PK, Cartersville HS)… made a pair of field goals from 38 and 49 yards, was 4-for-4 on PATs, and booted 5-of-6 kickoffs for touchbacks as the 49ers beat visiting Middle Tennessee 34-20 Saturday. Cruz did miss on a 48-yard attempt in the second quarter, his first miss of the season. He has made five of six field goal attempts this season with a long kick of 53 yards. His 41 kickoffs have averaged 57.7 yards with 21 touchbacks. Charlotte (4-5, 2-3 C-USA) travel to El Paso Saturday to face the UTEP Miners. DALEN CURTIS — Brevard College (Jr., TE/FB, Cartersville HS)… saw action in the Tornadoes 21-3 win Saturday at LaGrange College. Brevard (5-2, 3-2) hosts the Cougars of Averett University Saturday night in another USA South Athletic Conference game. KURTIS FEANNY — Lenoir-Rhyne University (So., OL, Woodland HS)… the Bears’ starter at left guard contributed to an offense that totaled 369 yards, including 200 yards rushing in a 20-13 home victory over 12th-ranked Wingate. 7th-ranked LRU (9-0, 7-0 South Atlantic Conference) entertains UNC-Pembroke Saturday in Hickory. HUNTER HARDIN — Point University (Jr., OL, Woodland HS)… a starter at center Saturday, Hardin was part of an offense that produced 429 total yards in a 27-12 win at Kentucky Christian. Point (4-5, 2-1 Mid-South Conference) hosts St. Andrews (NC) University Saturday for Homecoming. SEAN HOLTON — Davidson College (Jr., DB, Cartersville HS)… made three tackles including one for a three-yard loss. TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (So., QB, Cartersville HS)… threw for three touchdowns and 2018 yards in the Tigers’ 59-14 win over Wofford Saturday. Lawrence completed 12-of-16 passes and rushed for 33 yards on four attempts in the win. His 218 passing yards Saturday put him over 2,000 for the season with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His 82.4 total QBR ranks him eighth in the nation. No. 4-ranked Clemson (9-0, 6-0 ACC) travels to Raleigh Saturday night to take on the North Carolina State Wolfpack.
