Bartow County Parks and Recreation will host a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for their new multi-purpose sports turf field at Hamilton Crossing Park. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 3 at 9:00 a.m. The Challenger League of Bartow County will play the inaugural game on the new field immediately following the opening ceremony. The public is invited to attend the celebration and opening of the newest addition to Hamilton Crossing Park.

Governor Geoff Duncan to serve as Chair of the Senate Athletic Association Study Committee. “The current process surrounding our athletic association in Georgia is simply flawed,” said Sen. Thompson. “The Georgia High School Association is funded by tax dollars, and therefore should be transparent in its spending of these dollars. Because our students and school personnel are directly affected by the decisions made by the association, these individuals should be a part of the conversation, which will be a point of discussion in this study committee. This committee will also review the current board of directors to ensure that all schools throughout the state are being represented fairly and guarantee all parties have a seat at the table. Former Cartersville High School left hand pitcher Sam Howard was added to the Colorado Rockies’ 40-man roster Sunday morning following an impressive 19 appearance stretch for Triple-A Albuquerque that saw his ERA dip by more than two runs per nine innings pitched. Howard will join the Rockies on their current road trip in Washington. They also play at Cincinnati this weekend before returning to Denver for a homestand against the Dodgers and Giants. Elsewhere, Elliott Anderson continued his scoreless string of appearances launching his pro career. The Royals’ 23rd round draft selection this past June has now tossed more than ten innings without allowing an earned run at the Advanced Rookie level. Cartersville native RHP Luke Schiltz has also now made three straight scoreless appearances for the Rookie Arizona League Rangers and infielder Connor Justus is in the midst of an offensive surge for the Double-A Mobile BayBears. ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Burlington Royals (1st yr. pro; LHP; Rookie Advanced Appalachian League; Kansas City Royals’ organization; Auburn; Cartersville HS)… continued the stellar start to his professional career with two more scoreless relief appearances earning his first pro win and his second career save. He entered in the sixth inning at home against the Danville Braves last Monday with two runners on base and the Royals leading 5-2. Anderson completed the longest stint of his pro career with 2 and 1/3 innings. He kept Danville off the scoreboard, retired seven of eight batters faced (hit batsman), and struck out four. Burlington won the game 10-2. Last Thursday Anderson allowed one hit, but retired the side with a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning appearance to earn a save as the Royals beat the visiting Bluefield Blue Jays 4-1. Since joining the professional ranks, Anderson is 1-0 with two saves in eight relief appearances. He has not allowed an earned run and has 12 strikeouts with only two walks and one hit batsman. Opponents are hitting a mere .171 against the southpaw and his WHIP stands at 0.77. Burlington (17-15) is in second place in the Appy League East Division. The Royals trail the Pulaski Yankees by 3 and 1/2 games. SAM HOWARD — Colorado Rockies (6th yr. pro; LHP; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS)… after making 36 relief appearances this season at Triple-A Albuquerque, Howard was added to the Colorado Rockies’ 40-man roster Sunday morning. The Rockies also recalled pitcher Jeff Hoffman from the Isotopes. The roster shakeup comes as Colorado is mired in a seven-game losing streak and has suffered back-to-back series sweeps to the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees. To make room, the Rockies optioned starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela to Triple-A and designated Mark Reynolds for assignment. Howard is expected to add bullpen depth after posting a 3.83 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across 44.2 innings of relief this season for the Pacific Coast League Isotopes. This is Howard’s first appearance of 2019 on the MLB Rockies’ roster after seeing action in four games last season. Three of those appearances came in September after roster expansion and the 26-year-old southpaw has never thrown more than an inning with the Rockies. He has a 2.25 ERA at the MLB level with a 2.00 WHIP. Howard was non-tendered by the Rockies last December, but re-signed with the Colorado organization on a minor league contract in January of this year. He was eventually assigned to Triple-A Albuquerque where he has and 2-1 record and has made 36 relief appearances accumulating 57 strikeouts. Since May 27, Howard has allowed only two earned runs in 19 appearances across 19.2 innings. He has issued only four walks (two intentional) during that stretch with 27 strikeouts. His ERA over his last 19 games has dropped from 6.12 to 3.83. Colorado (47-52) is currently fourth in the National League’s West Division. The Rockies trail the division-leading Dodgers by 18 games, but are only 4.5 games back in the Wild Card race. CONNOR JUSTUS — Mobile BayBears (4th yr. pro; Infielder; Double-A Southern League; L.A. Angels’ organization; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… hit safely in four of five games this past week including back-to-back multi-hit games at the Tennessee Smokies and at home against the Biloxi Shuckers. He also hit his second home run of the year Sunday in a home, extra innings loss to Biloxi. For the week, Justus was 7-for-19 (.368) with a pair of doubles, a walk, and four runs scored. His season batting average through 83 games now stands at .196 with 19 RBI and an OBP of .303 in 245 official at-bats. Defensively, the 24-year-old carries a .946 fielding average in 296 total chances. That includes 49 games at shortstop, 19 at third base, and 14 at second base. He has been part of 25 of the BayBears’ double plays. Mobile (13-16 second half) trails Southern League second half South Division leader Biloxi by six games. The BayBears are 40-57 in 2019. HS)… made a pair of scoreless appearances last week covering a total of five innings pitched. He entered in the second inning and fired three scoreless frames at the AZL Athletics Gold last Monday in an eventual extra innings loss. In that appearance, Schiltz scattered a pair of hits retiring nine of eleven batters faced all on contact — five groundouts including a double play and three fly outs. In Saturday’s 7-5 home loss to AZL Royals, he allowed only one hit over the final two innings. Schiltz has now made four relief appearances and worked seven innings with a 1.29 ERA. He has one walk, one hit batsman, and one strikeout. His WHIP stands at 0.71. Opponents have a .174 batting average against him. The Rangers (19-9) are in first place in the Arizona League’s West Division with a 1.5 game lead over the AZL Royals. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Charleston RiverDogs (2nd yr. pro; Catcher; Class A South Atlantic League; N.Y. Yankees’ organization; Cartersville HS)… had only one hit this past week in five games played. The sixth inning single came last Monday in the RiverDogs’ 3-2 win in at the Augusta Greenjackets. For the season, Seigler has a .175 batting average in 97 official at-bats across 30 games. He has three doubles, 20 walks, and six RBI with one stolen base for a .328 OBP. Defensively, the 20-year-old catcher has a .984 fielding percentage in 183 total chances. He has thrown out eight of 23 stolen base attempts. Charleston (13-18 second half) has slipped to the cellar of the second half SAL Southern Division standings. The 14U Cartersville Little League Junior baseball team had its state tournament run come to a close Thursday night with an 8-3 loss to Elbert County in the championship round. The loss ended a streak of three straight elimination game wins for Cartersville who must settle for Georgia Junior Little League state runner-up. Elbert County handed Cartersville both losses in the double-elimination tournament and will now advance to the Junior Little League Southeast Regional August 2-5 in Broadway, Virginia. Cartersville out hit Elbert County ten to eight Thursday night, but fell behind early and was unable to catch up. Elbert County led 2-0 after one inning and 6-0 after three frames. Cartersville posted a pair of runs in the fourth inning to narrow the margin to 6-2, but single insurance runs by Elbert in the fifth and sixth innings secured the victory and the state title. Ayden Ray (5.2 IP, 8R, 7ER, 8H, 6BB, 2K) went most of the way for Cartersville on the mound. Sawyer Wilson (0.1 IP, 0R, 0H) took the mound to retire the final out in the sixth inning. After dropping its first game of the state tournament last Saturday, the Cartersville Junior Little League 14U baseball team has battled its way through three straight elimination games to reach the state championship round. Cartersville defeated Athens Junior Little League 9-4 Wednesday night in West Point and will now face Elbert County for the state title. Cartersville must win twice Thursday. Elbert County only needs one more win in the double-elimination tournament. It was Elbert County that topped Cartersville last Saturday 11-1. Since that loss, Cartersville has wins over Northern-Columbus 9-5, Hobgood 10-0, and Athens. In addition to Cartersville, Elbert County has tournament wins over West Point 15-0 and Athens 14-2. In Wednesday’s win over Athens, Cartersville led 2-0 after one inning before Athens knotted the score 2-2 in the top of the third. Cartersville plated three runs in their half of the third inning for a 5-2 advantage and would maintain their lead the rest of the way. Athens narrowed the margin to 5-3 in the top of the fifth, but two more Cartersville runs in both the fifth and sixth innings provided a 9-3 lead. Athens scored a run in the top of the seventh but Cartersville pitcher Sawyer Wilson got a ground out and a strikeout to close out the game. Geoffrey Gore (5.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 1H, 5BB, 9K) started on the mound for Cartersville and picked up the pitching win. Pitchers Ayden Ray and Grant Knight combined for a five-inning, no-hitter Tuesday night as the Cartersville Junior Little League 14U baseball team blanked Hobgood 10-0 in an elimination game of the Georgia Little League Junior League state tournament in West Point. With the win, Cartersville is now one of only three teams remaining in the double-elimination tournament that began last Saturday and will conclude Thursday. Cartersville 14U, now 2-1 in the tournament and 2-0 in elimination games, plays Athens Junior Little League Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. for the right to play Elbert County Junior Little League in the championship round Thursday night. Elbert has not lost in the tournament and handed Cartersville and Athens their losses. Elbert topped Cartersville in Saturday’s opener 11-1 and beat Athens Tuesday night, 14-2. The two Cartersville pitchers were dominant in Tuesday night’s win. Hobgood did not advance a baserunner beyond second base. Ray (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 6K) opened on the mound and struck out six of the seven batters he faced. One batter reached first base on a dropped third strike and he walked one. A final inning rally came up short Tuesday afternoon for the Cartersville Little League 11U team and the 8-4 loss to Northern Columbus eliminated the local squad from the double-elimination Georgia Little League 11U state tournament in Savannah. Cartersville, who finished fourth in the tournament, suffered both tournament losses to Northern. Northern defeated Cartersville in Saturday’s first round 10-0. Cartersville reached the rematch by defeating Martinez-Evans 8-7 Sunday and East Marietta 11-1 Monday. In Tuesday’s second meeting, Northern raced to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and led 7-1 after two frames. After two scoreless innings, Northern added a run in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead. Cartersville scored three runs and had the potential tying run at the plate in their final frame with only one out, but a strikeout and a line drive out ended the contest. Cartersville was out hit by Northern in Tuesday’s game 13 to 2. Bear McWhorter had a two-run double in the sixth inning. Brayden Channell doubled to lead off Cartersville’s second inning and eventually scored a run. Logan Buchanan and Kamdyn Woods contributed one RBI each. Cartersville Junior Little League 14U took a 6-0 lead early and held on for a 9-5 victory over Northern Columbus Monday night in an elimination game at the Georgia Junior Little League state tournament in West Point. The victory means Cartersville will be one of only four teams remaining in the six-team, double-elimination tournament when play begins Tuesday night. Cartersville 14U led 6-0 after two innings, but Northern Columbus cut that advantage to 6-4 with a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings. Cartersville added a run in the bottom half of the fourth and two more in the sixth for the eventual four-run win. Cartersville rapped out 16 hits in the win and survived despite committing five errors. Four Cartersville pitchers kept Northern in check throughout the evening, scattering ten hits and six walks. For a second straight day, Cartersville Little League 11U won an elimination game at the Georgia Little League 11U State Tournament in Savannah. This time the 11-1 win over East Marietta advanced Cartersville to the final four teams remaining in the eight-team double-elimination event. Cartersville 11U opened state tournament action Saturday at Charlie Brooks Park in Chatham County (photo) with a 10-0 loss to Northern-Columbus, but bounced back Sunday with an 8-7 win over Martinez-Evans. Monday’s win sets up an elimination game rematch with Northern-Columbus at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Warner Robins American and Toccoa are both unbeaten in the tournament and face one another Tuesday at 10 a.m. The winner of that game advances to the championship round which begins Thursday. The Warner Robins American-Toccoa winner will also need only one additional win to capture the state title. Starting pitcher Bodie Brumlow limited East Marietta to a lone run on four hits and a walk through 4 and 2/3 innings Monday. He also struck out four. Asa Mitcham, who started in centerfield, relieved Brumlow in the fifth inning with two on and two outs. He fanned the only batter faced with Cartersville leading 9-1 at the time. Meanwhile, the Cartersville offense took a 6-0 lead in the second inning. Brayden Channell started the inning with a double to right field and moved to third base on a passed ball. Logan Buchanan then drove Channell home with a bunt. After Griffin Woodall singled into centerfield, Reed Ezell doubled home Buchanan and set up runners at second and third base. Back-to-back walks to Matthew Morris and Lyle Woody made the score 3-0. Ezell scored on a triple steal and Mitcham drove in a run with a groundout for a 5-0 advantage. Brumlow then capped the inning with a triple that scored Woody to give Cartersville a 6-0 lead. East Marietta scored in the top of the third inning to narrow the margin to 6-1, but Cartersville added a run in the third and two runs each in the fourth and fifth frames to close out the win. Two walks and an infield error led to Cartersville’s run in the third inning. Woody reached on an error and Mitcham singled to set up the locals’ runs in the fourth. Woody scored on a Bear McWhorter groundout and a second East Marietta miscue of the inning plated Mitcham for a 9-1 lead. Woods drove in two runs in the bottom of the fifth with a single to right field that provided Cartersville’s walk-off, run-rule victory. Cartersville totaled seven hits paced by Ezell who was 2-for-2 including a double with one RBI and scored twice. Woods (2 RBI), Mitcham (RBI), Brumlow (RBI triple), and Channell (double) had the other base hits. McWhorter, Woody, and Buchanan were each credited with one RBI. HS)… made a one inning relief appearance and his second pro appearance last Wednesday in a 16-5 win over the AZL Dodgers. Schiltz allowed one walk and struck out one while recording three outs in the sixth inning. The 19-year-old was taken in the 24th round in the MLB’s June draft. His AZL Rangers team is 14-7 and leads the Arizona League West Division. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Charleston RiverDogs (2nd yr. pro; C; Class A South Atlantic League; N.Y. Yankees’ organization; Cartersville HS)… appearing in only four games this past week, Seigler was 1-for-15 at the plate and his season average has slipped to .195. The one hit for the week was his third double of the year Friday night in a 4-3, extra inning win at Columbia. Seigler has 18 starts at catcher and has a .988 fielding percentage in 162 total chances. He has thrown out 7-of-20 on attempted stolen bases. The RiverDogs (10-13 second half) are currently in fifth place in the South Atlantic League’s Southern Division second half. Charleston has a 47-46 mark for the entire season.

Cartersville Little League 11U survived a late threat from Martinez-Evans and stayed alive in the losers’ bracket of the Georgia Little League 11U State Tournament in Savannah with an 8-7 win Sunday afternoon. Cartersville led 6-1 through three innings and had an 8-3 lead going to the final frame when Martinez-Evans scored four runs and had the potential tying run on third base before Cartersville closed out the win. Logan Buchanan (5 IP, 4ER, 4H, 1BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win for Cartersville with Bodie Brumlow (1 IP, 3R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB) closing out the final inning. Lyle Woody (RBI) and Brayden Channell both had two hits including one double each for Cartersville. Buchanan drove in two runs with one hit. Bear McWhorter had a double and one RBI. Brumlow, Kamdyn Woods, and Trenton Harris had the other Cartersville hits. Next for Cartersville Little League 11U is another elimination game Monday morning at 10 a.m. against East Marietta. Bill Faith shot a final round 73 Sunday and gained a little ground on fellow Cartersville Country Club member Buck Brumlow at the Georgia State Golf Association’s 2019 State Amateur Championship at Ansley Golf Club-Settindown Creek in Roswell. Brumlow, who finished tied for 24th overall, shot 77 Sunday for a 9-over-par 297 total in the 72-hole championship. A rising junior at Cartersville High School, Brumlow (photo, right) has committed to play collegiately at the University of Georgia and finished the event with rounds of 76-72-72-77. Faith (photo, left) finished in a tie for 36th place with a 13-over-par 301 total (75-75-78-73) at the 7,150-yard, par-72 course. Marietta native, Kennesaw Mountain High School graduate, and current Florida State Seminole Jonathan Keppler won the 98th Georgia Amateur title with a 7-under-par 281 total with rounds of 68-66-74-73.
