January 19, 2026 The Cartersville High basketball teams split games on Monday at the MLK Showcase hosted by Rome High School. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 85, SECTION (AL) 69 Kyron McClendon scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on Monday as Cartersville defeated Section (AL) at the Rome MLK Showcase. The Canes stepped out of region play on Monday afternoon, but extended their current winning streak to five games with an 85-69 win over Section (AL) at the Rome High School MLK Showcase. Cartersville led 31-26 at the end of a furiously paced first quarter and extended its lead from there. The Hurricanes led 55-41 at the intermission and 72-54 by the end of the third period. Kyron McClendon finished with a double-double that included 27 points and 10 rebounds. Wyatt Thomason scored 19 points with six boards. Xavier Lowe pitched in 14 points, and Nas Bennett added eight points and seven rebounds for the Canes.  Jake Cloud scored a game-high 46 points for the Lions (15-7). Cartersville (14-3, 7-0 Region 7-AAAA) travels to region-foe Dalton on Tuesday and hosts Allatoona on Friday. COLLINS HILL 62, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 55 The Class 4A third-ranked Lady Canes fell to Class 6A Collins Hill on Monday afternoon, 62-55, at the Rome High School MLK Showcase.  The Lady Eagles built a 35-9 first-half lead and held off a second-half rally by Cartersville for a seven-point win. Kaytlin Arnold led Cartersville with 27 points, five steals, and two assists. Trinity Montgomery posted 10 points, three boards, and two assists. Jayda Cothran finished with seven points, three rebounds, and two assists. Collins Hill improved to 14-4 with their victory. Cartersville (14-3, 7-0 Region 7-AAAA) visits ninth-ranked Dalton on Tuesday and welcomes Allatoona on Friday.

January 17, 2026 Charles Wilson / BartowSportsZone.com Woodland defeated county-rival Cass 36-35 on Saturday to win the 2026 GHSA Class 4A Team Dual state championship at Ola High School in McDonough. For the third straight season, Woodland and Cass squared off in the finals of the GHSA State Dual Tournament, but this time it was the Wildcats who edged the Colonels by a single point on Saturday at Ola High School in McDonough, 36-35. Cass had won the state title match in the two previous seasons and had captured three dual titles since 2022. The team dual title is the first for Woodland since winning three-straight in 2019 through 2021, and the program’s sixth dual state title overall. Woodland swept all four matches in the 16-team single-elimination championship bracket. The Wildcats defeated Pace Academy (78-3), Cambridge (60-16), and Harris County (60-18) to reach the title match. The Colonels’ three wins to reach the championship round were over Drew (42-35), Central-Carroll (50-27), and Ola (42-25). Six individual Wildcats were unbeaten in the tournament. Joshua Palmore (132 pounds), Nathan Cates (150/157), and Owen Jones (190) each went 4-0. Cayden Bagley (106) and John Gill (215) finished 3-0. Paul Lanier (175) won his only bout. Nick Weathersbee (113), Adrian Zapata (126), Dylan Couey (144), and Skylar Pizzutiello (165) finished the tournament with 3-1 marks. Noah Cates (138) was 2-1. Brayden Postell (150) split his two bouts, and Will Thomas (285) went 2-2. For Cass, Hayden Trimm (120), Rowdy Duck (138), and Luka Jensen (144) went 4-0 in the tournament. Ethan Harrington (157) was 3-0, and David Jewel (150) won both of his bouts. Mason Tompkins (175), Brandon Lalbehari (106), Gavin Walker (113), and John Abernathy (285) finished 1-1. Ethan Edwards (132) finished 2-2. Justus Fife (126), Collin Armona (150/157), Zach Stiles (190), and Codey Dean (215) each won one of three bouts for the Colonels. The two teams will now turn their focus to the Traditional Tournament portion of their schedules, where Woodland owns state titles in 2003, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Cass has won three Traditional Tournament championships: 2006, 2022, and 2025.

January 18, 2026 Woodland finished ninth of 20 participating schools in the combined team scores on Saturday at the Northwest Georgia Swimming and Diving Invitational hosted by Calhoun. The host Yellow Jackets won the meet with 739 points. Blessed Trinity (563) and Pace Academy (476) finished second and third, respectively. Woodland scored 186 points, while Adairsville was tenth (157) and Cass was 12th (70). The Woodland girls were seventh with the Cass girls, and the Adairsville boys finished in ninth place. The Tigers will host the Paw Power Meet on Saturday and the Adairsville Last Chance Meet on January 26. Cass will host Pickens and Gilmer on Tuesday at the Adairsville facility. The Colonels will also face Cartersville on January 27. Woodland will face Cartersville on Thursday at the Adairsville pool, and will compete in the Paw Power and Last Chance Meets at Adairsville on Saturday and January 26.

January 16, 2025 The Woodland and Cass wrestling teams each won their first-round and state quarterfinal matches on Friday at the Class 4A Dual State Tournament at Ola High School in McDonough. Woodland cruised past Pace Academy in the opening round 78-3, while Cass topped Drew 42-35. In the state quarterfinals, Woodland handled Cambridge 60-16, while Cass defeated Central-Carroll 50-27. Woodland will square off with Harris County on Saturday in the state semifinals. Cass will face host Ola. The state championship match will follow on Saturday.

January 17, 2026 The Cass Lady Colonels and Colonels basketball teams lost non-region games on Saturday at Class 6A North Cobb in Acworth. NORTH COBB 55, CASS GIRLS 20 The host Lady Warriors built a 30-11 advantage in the first half and defeated Cass on Saturday, 55-20. Jaidyn Taylor led North Cobb (7-9) with 18 points. London Reyes finished with 15, and Hananiah Bell contributed 10 in the Lady Warriors’ win. Nakayla Evans was the top scorer for the Lady Colonels with nine points. Cass (6-10, 5-2) returns to Region 7-AAAA play next week with road games at Woodland on Tuesday and Southeast Whitfield on Friday. NORTH COBB 68, CASS BOYS 40 North Cobb had four players reach double-digit scoring on Saturday in a 68-40 home win over the Cass Colonels. Jacoby Hardy led the Warriors with 19 points. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 54, WOODLAND 12 The fourth-ranked Lady Canes led 26-0 after the opening eight minutes and strolled to a 54-12 win on Friday at Woodland. Cass held a 22-19 lead at halftime and led 35-27 through three quarters before pulling away in the final eight minutes. Nakayla Evans scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Lady Colonels. WOODLAND BOYS 62, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 26 The Woodland Wildcats gained their first Region 7-AAAA win of the season on Wednesday night at Southeast Whitfield, 62-26. Woodland raced to a 21-4 lead in the first quarter and led 32-13 at halftime. The Wildcats added to their lead in the second half for a 36-point win. “We got out to a hot start,” said Woodland coach Kip Dyer following the game. “The guys played well, moving the ball and getting others involved.” Canden Davis led Woodland with 13 points. Caiden Moore followed with 12 and Solomon James added eight for the Widcats. Tucker Townsend led the Raiders (0-14, 0-6) with eight points. Woodland (8-9, 1-5) hosts region-leader Cartersville on Friday. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 39, WOODLAND GIRLS 15 Dellyn Walston and Betzai Hipolito scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, to lead the host Lady Raiders over Woodland on Wednesday night, 39-15. Southeast Whitfield led 14-8 at halftime and pulled away in the third quarter for a 34-10 advantage. Navaeh Smith-Ferman led the Lady Cats with six points. Destiny Jackson, who left the game in the third quarter with an injury, added five points. Southeast improved to 2-12 overall and 1-5 in Region 7-AAAA. PHOTO: CanesAthletics.com Maggie Sheffield earned Top Gun honors as CHS Rifle moved to 12-0 on the season, defeating Woodstock on Tuesday by an overall score of 1139-1089 while hitting the X 57 times compared to the Wolverines’ 24. Senior Night honored Lucy Evans, Lucas Gibson, and Graham Farrell. Evans will continue next year as a member of Morehead State University’s Rifle team. Gibson has served as the team manager and a shooter and will leave for the Navy upon graduation. Farrell, also on the JROTC sporter team, plans to join the Army after graduation.  Sheffield, a junior, shot 100-8 in prone and 292-14 overall. Evans was on her heels with a perfect 100-10 in prone and a 289-22 score.  Chance Van Pelt finished third for the Canes and fourth overall with 281-11. Bryson Newport scored 277-10, and Emma Daughdrill scored a 274-8. Gibson finished with a personal-best 265-4.  The Canes travel to Ridgeland on Thursday, January 15 for their first match this season on electronic targets.

CASS GIRLS 50, HIRAM 29 The Lady Colonels took a nice step forward in the race for a top-four seed in the Region 7-AAAA tournament on Tuesday night with a 50-29 road win at Hiram.  The Lady Colonels outscored the Lady Hornets 15-5 in the second quarter to build a 26-15 lead at halftime and added to their lead in the second half. Yvonne Ellison led Cass with 18 points. Nakayla Evans scored 14, and Cadie Paez added 10 for the Cass. Brittani Payne posted 14 points for Hiram (5-9, 3-3). The Cass girls (5-9, 4-2) welcome Allatoona on Friday. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 47, LAFAYETTE 42 The Lady Tigers had one of their most productive fourth quarters of the season and collected their second Region 7-AAA win on Tuesday night at LaFayette, 47-42. Bryson Penson led all scorers with 17 points for LaFayette. Brennan Ballard and Tay Ware each added 10 for the Ramblers (11-5, 3-2). HIRAM 81, CASS BOYS 45 The host Hornets had four players reach double-digit scoring on Tuesday, overpowering the Cass Colonels 81-45. A.J. Williams led all scorers with 24 points for Hiram. Cartersville High alum Trevor Lawrence passed for three touchdowns, but Jacksonville’s turnaround season came to an end. On the collegiate front, several local alumni from Cartersville, Cass, and Adairsville High Schools delivered standout performances across basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics. NFL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 5th-year pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS)  … completed 18 of 30 pass attempts for 207 yards and three touchdowns in the Jaguars’ 27-24 home Wild Card Playoff loss this past Sunday to the Buffalo Bills. Lawrence was picked off twice, including a tipped ball interception on Jacksonville’s final possession. He rushed for 31 yards on six attempts. Jacksonville took a 24-20 lead with just over four minutes remaining, but the Bills scored on their next possession to take a three-point lead. Lawrence passed for 4,007 yards during the regular season and completed 61 percent of his throws. The playoff loss ends the Jaguars’ season with a 13-5 record. The season was a remarkable turnaround for Jacksonville who went 4-13 in 2024. BASKETBALL TAFF BRADLEY — Huntingdon College (So., Cartersville HS) … scored three points and made one steal on January 6 in the Lady Hawks’ 66-35 home win over Wesleyan College (GA). January 10, 2026 The Adairsville Tigers' wrestling team went 0-2 at their Area 3A Duals Championship on Saturday, falling to LaFayette and Heritage-Catoosa. Adairsville 157-pounder Jarret Chriswell won both of his bouts by pinfall. The Tigers now turn their attention to the traditional format for the remainder of the season with matches at Armuchee on Tuesday and Cedartown on Thursday.
