A total of fourteen baseball players at Adairsville, Cass, and Woodland were named to their respective All-Region teams this week by region coaches. Landon Ayers, B.J. Roper, and Trace Still of Adairsville were selected to the 35-member All-Region 6-AAA squad. Matt Shook of Cass was named to the All-Region 7-AAAAA First Team as an infielder. Fellow Colonels Bryson Markley and Jordan Gani were selected to the All-Region 7-AAAAA Second Team — Markley as an outfielder and Gani as a utility defender. Logan Nelson of Cass was an Honorable Mention selection at catcher. Seven different Woodland players were recognized. Bailey Ward was an All Region 7-AAAAA Second Team selection as both a pitcher and a designated hitter. He was also an Honorable Mention catcher selection. Dallas Adams of the Wildcats was chosen as a All-Region Second Team infielder. The Adairsville High School girls golf team has received an at-large bid to the Class AAA State Tournament coming up in just over a week. The Lady Tigers finished fourth at their Area Tournament April 29 at the Calhoun Elks Lodge and Golf Club where the top three teams advanced automatically to the state tournament. Because Class AAA allows for teams with state qualifying scores to be eligible for at-large berths, the team was following the GHSA’s process in the selections and learned their fate earlier this week. Juniors Lindsey Angland, Maycee Gwin, and Cortni Jacobs shot a team score of 289 at the area tournament to earn the bid. Jacobs led the way with an 80, Angland fired a 96 and Gwin totaled a 104. Adairsville will now head to the two-day GHSA Class AAA State Championship Tournament to be played at the Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course at Richard B. Russell State Park in Elberton May 20-21.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes’ baseball team ran into a red-hot Northside-Columbus club Wednesday evening in the Class AAAA state quarterfinals at Richard Bell Field and were eliminated by the Patriots in a doubleheader sweep, 3-1 in 10 innings and 4-2 in the two clubs' best-of-three series. Northside, winners of 11 straight, advances to the Class AAAA semifinals next week to face North Oconee. The Titans knocked out Columbus Wednesday with a sweep of their own — 5-0 and 3-0. Northside’s starting pitchers in the two games — Colton Joyner and Connor Sizemore were outstanding. Joyner (9 IP, 1R, 0ER, 8H, 2BB, 5K) went nine innings without allowing an earned run to win Game 1. Sizemore (7 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 6K) went the distance in Game 2 allowing just a pair of second inning runs. Patriots’ centerfielder Hunter Poe picked up a save in Game 1 with a perfect tenth inning in relief of Joyner. Cartersville pitchers fared well too, but the scrappy Patriots found ways to score just enough. Gage Morris (5 IP, 2R, 0ER, 6H, 0BB, 4K) was the tough-luck loser on the mound for Cartersville in the opener in relief of starter Mason Barnett (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 5H, 0BB, 5K). Morris, who allowed only three runs all season (all unearned) was the pitcher of record when Northside pushed across two unearned runs in the tenth. He had entered in the sixth inning after Barnett left. Barnett left the game after taking a few warm-up tosses in the sixth inning, but did not face a batter. He later returned as a re-entry batter in the tenth inning. Canes’ starting pitcher Logan Martin (5 IP, 4R, 3ER, 4H, 2BB, 7K) suffered the Game 2 loss. Morris (1 IP, 0R, 1H) entered for his 22nd appearance of the season with a runner on base and no outs. In the opener, both teams scored single runs in the fifth inning and no one crossed the plate again until Northside took a decisive 3-1 lead in the top of the tenth. Hunter Poe reached second base on an error, moved to third base on a wild pitch, and scored for the Patriots on a passed ball in the fifth. Cartersville tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Brant Smith and Kolby Adams singled and Smith crossed the plate on a Patriots’ infield error. In the tenth for Northside, Clayton Weaver singled with one out. Mack Williams reached on a line drive off the glove of Josh Davis at second base. Connor O’Neal then singled into right field and the ball was misplayed into a two-run, two base error. Poe then retired the Canes in order in the bottom of the tenth for Northside’s 3-1 victory. Cartersville led 2-0 in Game 2 before Northside tied the score in the fourth inning and added single runs in the fifth and sixth frames to secure the series clincher. Ian Inaba and Smith drove in the Canes’ early runs in the second inning, but the Patriots responded late with four unanswered runs. Spencer Chandler drove in Northside’s first run with a groundout and Williams — who was hit by a pitch — scored on a wild pitch. Poe scored in the fifth after reaching as a hit batsman. The Patriots sacrificed him to second base. He reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Colton Joyner’s ground out to first base. Northside added an insurance run in the sixth following a walk, a ground out, and a RBI single by Chandler. Trailing 4-2, Davis singled for the Hurricanes in the seventh inning but a fly out, strikeout, and groundout ended the game and the series. Weaver (RBI, 2 runs), O’Neal, and Chandler (2 RBI) were all 3-for-8 in the doubleheader to pace Northside’s offense. Poe was 2-for-2 with a run scored in Game 2. Tray Richburg and Justin Veloz both contributed two hits each in the opening game for the Patriots. For Cartersville, Jordan Wilkie, Cohen Wilbanks, Davis, Inaba (RBI), and Smith (RBI) had two hits each in the doubleheader. Four other Canes — Preston Welchel, Barnett, J.P. Martin, and Adams had one hit in the series. Northside-Columbus, the No. 3 seed out of Region 1-AAAA, improved to 28-7 with their third straight playoff sweep. Cartersville has its season end with a 28-6 mark and a Region 5-AAAA title.

The Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association baseball coaches selected their All-Region teams, along with selecting the Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Gold Glove team for the 2019 season. Skylar McPhee of Georgia Highlands College was the recipient of the 2019 All Conference Player of the Year. McPhee (photo) — an infielder and right hand pitcher — hit for a .435 batting average that included ten home runs and 46 RBI. He pitched just under ten innings in a spot role and finished the year with a .983 fielding percentage. McPhee was also included on the All Conference First Team and the Gold Glove Team. Georgia Highlands College baseball was knocked out of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference tournament Wednesday in Albany with a pair of losses in the double-elimination event. The Chargers lost an afternoon opening round game to East Georgia State CC 8-3 and fell in an evening elimination game to South Georgia State CC, 8-5. A four-run seventh inning for East Georgia broke open a one-run game in GHC’s first round loss. East Georgia also out hit the Chargers ten to three. In Wednesday night’s elimination game, Georgia Highlands carried a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning before South Georgia scored five runs over the final three frames to end the Chargers’ season. GHC relief pitcher Levi Ayers (0.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB) was tagged with the Game 1 loss to East Georgia. Ethan Underwood (2.1 IP, 3ER, 6H, 1BB, 1K), Stevie Szucs (2.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 1K), Trace Twardoski (0.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 0H, 2BB), Skylar McPhee (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H), and Ryan Smithson (1 IP, 2BB) all pitched in the loss. Dalton Rhadans (7 IP, 6R, 4ER, 8H, 3BB, 5K) suffered the pitching loss to South Georgia. Twardoski (1 IP, 1K) and Logan Ward (1 IP, 2ER, 2H) also worked from the bump. Malik Spratling hit a two-run home run against East Georgia McPhee tripled. McPhee drove in a run with a hit and Bryson Horne added a hit. Lavoisier Fisher led the Chargers against South Georgia with three hits including a double and one RBI. Horne had two hits. Parker Orr doubled home two runs. Spratling added a solo home run while Hunter Moody, Alex Marquand, Willis Kemp, and McPhee (RBI) had the other Chargers’ hits. The GCAA Championship Tournament continues Thursday with top-seed Gordon State facing East Georgia at 12 noon. The loser of that game will play South Georgia in an elimination game at 3 p.m. The 3 p.m. survivor with play the 12 noon winner in the championship round of the double-elimination tournament Friday. The Georgia Highlands season ends with a 29-25 record.

The Georgia High School Association announced today that all eight State Football Championships will be played at Georgia State Stadium in Atlanta (formerly Turner Field) on Friday and Saturday, December 13-14, 2019. The announcement came from GHSA Executive Director Dr. Robin Hines. “Georgia State University has been tremendously supportive in planning with the GHSA an event that will provide a first class experience for our student athletes and benefit our participating schools. We look forward to our partnership with Georgia State University,” said Hines. The GHSA has attempted to hold the games in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta the past two seasons. Games were snowed out in 2017 and had to be played at local high school stadiums, then last year the games were moved to mid-week dates due to a conflict with the Atlanta United soccer team who hosted the Major League Soccer finals. Prior to the past two seasons, the championship games were held at The Georgia Dome 2008 to 2016.

Fifteen local high school track and field athletes advanced from their respective GHSA State Sectional Meets Saturday to reach the State Finals this Thursday through Saturday. Three different local athletes won four state sectional titles including two by Woodland’s McKenna Trapheagen. Trapheagen won both the girls 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs at the Class 5A sectional in Fayetteville. Sydney Molinaro of Woodland won the girls high jump at the same sectional and Cartersville’s Nick Bebko won the Class 4A boys pole vault sectional in Columbus. London Shaw of Cartersville, Nakiyah Washington of Adairsville, and Rylee Evans of Woodland were the other two-event state finals qualifiers. Shaw was a top-8 sectional qualifer in the two throwing events. She was second in the shot put and eighth in the discus throw. Washington was also a finals qualifying in the AAA throwing events. Evans was a double qualifier in the two distance events. She was fifth in the 1600 meter run and seventh in the 3200 meter run. The Class 3A and 4A State Finals will be at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The Class 5A State Finals will be at Carrollton High School. In this past week’s college baseball action, former Cartersville High School left hand pitcher Elliott Anderson appeared in a pair of Auburn wins over Alabama and former Adairsville standout Lane Griffith hit safely in each of West Georgia’s first three conference tournament games. On the college softball diamond, the 2019 season has now closed for all local players except D-I pitchers and former Hurricanes Annalyn Yantis at Samford and Hannah Todd at Kansas. Meanwhile, local minor leaguers Sam Howard and Connor Justus continued their work in the Pacific Coast League and Southern League, respectively, while Anthony Seigler continues to participate in extended spring training in Tampa for the New York Yankees’ organization. He also entered in the sixth inning Saturday during a 7-1 win at Tacoma. He did not allow a run on one hit and two walks and fanned one as he earned his second hold of the season. Howard has a 1-0 record with a 5.00 ERA in 11 appearances and 18 total innings. He has 22 strikeouts and 13 walks. Albuquerque (17-14) is in third place in the PCL Pacific Southern Division. The Isotopes are 4-1/2 games behind El Paso. CONNOR JUSTUS — Mobile BayBears (4th yr. pro; SS; L.A. The Bulldogs fell 6-2 with Yantis allowing three earned runs (four total) on six hits and two walks. She also appeared for one out in the sixth inning of a 4-3 win at Chattanooga Saturday. She faced two batters. One reached on an error and the other grounded out. Samford (22-29, 11-6) begins play in the Southern Conference Championship Tournament Wednesday in Chattanooga. COLLEGE BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Jr., LHP, Cartersville HS)… (photo above) appeared in two wins over Alabama during the weekend. Thursday he entered in the sixth inning with Auburn leading 4-1 and went three innings in a 5-1 victory. He did not allow a run on a walk and two hits with three strikeouts, facing eleven Crimson Tide batters. In Sunday’s 17-7 blowout win, Anderson closed out the final two frames allowing three earned runs on a walk and five hits. Auburn (29-18, 12-12) hosts UAB Tuesday night and will entertain Georgia in a three-game SEC series Friday through Sunday. LEVI AYERS — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… made a one inning appearance last Tuesday in a 4-3 loss at South Georgia CC. Ayers pitched a scoreless ninth inning facing the minimum. Georgia Highlands (29-23, 15-14 GCAA) plays East Georgia CC Wednesday in the opening round of the conference tournament at Albany State University-West Campus. LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… (photo above) hit safely in each of the Wolves’ first three Gulf South Conference Tournament games. Griffith was 1-for-4 in a 6-5 win over 2-seed Mississippi College, 1-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt in a 10-3 win over third seeded Delta State University, and was 2-for-4 including a double and one RBI in Sunday’s 11-8 loss to University of West Florida. The loss to the Argonauts drops West Georgia to a Monday elimination game against Valdosta State in the double-elimination tournament. Delta State also plays West Florida Monday with UWF the only remaining unbeaten team. The GSC tournament concludes Tuesday in Oxford, Alabama. HUNTER HICE — USC-Upstate (Fr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… made an unsuccessful pinch hitting appearance Friday in a 9-2 win over Alabama State Univerisity. The Spartans (22-22, 8-12) host non-conference Wofford Wednesday and travel to Charleston Southern for a Big South Conference series Friday through Sunday. HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (So., RHP, Cartersville HS)… did not appear in the Skyhawks’ three conference tournament games. He finished the season with a 6-2 record in 15 appearances and 11 starts in 2019. He struck out 35 and had a 3.45 ERA. Point finished the year with a 30-23 record. MASON ROBINSON — Louisiana Tech (R-Sr., OF, Woodland HS)… went 1-for-10 in three road games last week — a loss at Northwestern State and the split of a doubleheader at Old Dominion. Robinson’s batting average slipped to .296 with three home runs and 21 RBI. The Bulldogs (29-19, 13-11 Conference USA) plays at LSU Tuesday night and hosts Western Kentucky Friday through Sunday. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… in three starts at USC-Aiken last weekend Washington was 2-for-10 and had a stolen base. He has a .308 batting average as an every day starting outfielder for the Mountain Lions. YHC (32-18, 16-12) enters the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Friday through Sunday as the No. 4-seed and is in the same four-team pool with top-seed North Georgia, Georgia College, and Georgia Southwestern. The PBC tournament is hosted by Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. The two pool winners in the eight-team tournament square off for the conference’s NCAA automatic bid this Sunday. CAUY WILLIAMS — Wallace State-Dothan CC (Fr., RHP, Adairsville HS)… made a sixth inning appearance last Thursday in the Governors’ 8-4 win at Enterprise State CC. Williams allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk. He struck out one of five batters faced. TRACK AND FIELD TREVOR KNOWLES -- Albion College (So., Woodland HS)... racked up a trio of top-five finishes, as Albion placed fourth on the men's side in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships last Thursday and Friday in Holland, Michigan. The former Wildcat leapt to a runner-up spot in the long jump with a distance of 6.94 meters.
