The Cartersville High School girls’ tennis team earned a spot in the GHSA Class AAAA state semifinals Thursday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Eastside at Dellinger Park. The win marks the first appearance in the Final Four for the Cartersville girls since their state championship run in 2005. The Lady Canes collected victories at a pair of singles lines and Line 2 doubles to secure the win. The Cartersville girls were also leading in the two matches that were ultimately pulled and not completed. Emily Bush and Chloe Satterfield won at Line 2 and Line 3 singles, respectively. Bush won 6-0, 6-3 over Danie Lamadieu. Satterfield won 6-1, 6-0 over Sarah-June Moss. Cartersville’s Mason Cline and Mia Shaw picked up the Lady Canes’ third point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Eastside’s Kinsley Dozier and Reilly Anderson at Line 2 doubles. Ashley Popham, playing Line 1 singles and the Lady Canes’ Line 1 doubles tandem of Lydia Wiedetz and Alice Terry were leading at the conclusion of the team win. Popham led the Eagles’ Abbey-Grace Venham 5-4 in the second set after taking the first set 6-1. Wiedetz and Terry won their opening set 6-0 and were knotted 5-5 in the second set when the team victory was secured. “It was a great team win today for the girls and the program,” said an excited Cartersville head coach Brett Tolbert following the win. “Since all the teams remaining on our side of the bracket are No. 1 seeds, we will host the State Semifinals. The Cartersville baseball team eliminated Oconee County Wednesday night at Richard Bell Field by blanking the Warriors in a doubleheader sweep, 10-0 and 5-0 in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs. Pitchers Mason Barnett and Logan Martin kept Oconee County off the scoreboard with a pair of dominating efforts. In the opener, Barnett needed only 66 pitches to dispose of the Warriors in five innings. He scattered three hits without a walk and struck out six. Martin had to go seven innings in the nightcap, but also scattered three hits and walk while fanning eleven. With the two shutouts, Canes' pitchers have now gone six straight games without allowing an earned run. PHOTOS: Mason Barnett, Logan Martin, Preston Welchel The Cartersville offense struck early in Game 1 scoring six times in the second inning, three runs in the fourth, and closed out the five inning game with a walk-off single by pinch hitter Chandler Tromza. The six-run second included back-to-back home runs by Preston Welchel and Barnett. Welchel’s homer was a towering grand slam to right field to give the Canes a 5-0 lead and Barnett hit a solo shot over the left center field wall. J.P. Martin, who was 3-for-3 in Game 1, doubled home three runs in the fourth inning. Luke Dickens (double), Jackson Manders, and Jeff Thurmond had the Warriors three hits in the opening game. In Game 2, Dickens pitched into the sixth inning and kept the Warriors within striking distance at 1-0 but Cartersville notched four runs in the inning to build some cushion. Cohen Wilbanks singled to start the inning and was replaced by courtesy runner Davis Williams. Williams moved to third base on a pick-off attempt that resulted in an Oconee throwing error. Jordan Wilkie followed with an RBI single and J.P. Martin delivered a two-RBI double to give the Canes a 4-0 lead before Brant Smith drove home Martin with an RBI single of his own. Keanau Legaspi had two of the Warriors’ three hits including a double. Brooks Blizard had the other Oconee County safety. Nine different Canes had one hit each in Game 2 including, Josh Davis, Wilbanks, Barnett, Tromza, Jordan Wilkie, Ian Inaba, J.P. Martin, Smith, and Kolby Adams. Oconee County’s season ends with a nine game losing streak. The Warriors finish the year 18-13 after an 18-4 start. Cartersville (26-4) advances to the second round of the state playoffs and will host Flowery Branch. The Falcons swept Heritage-Catoosa in a first round series Wednesday night in Ringgold. The second round best-of-three series begins next Thursday, May 2 with a doubleheader. If a third game is necessary, Cartersville will host it on Friday, May 3. (Times TBA).

Georgia Highlands’ softball was swept to a pair of losses by Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Tuesday in a home doubleheader at Stars Field in Cassville. The visiting Fillies took the first game 7-1 and outlasted the Chargers 12-6 in ten innings in the nightcap to lock up second place in the conference regular season standings. ABAC led 2-0 in the first inning and never trailed in the opener. Georgia Highlands scored in the bottom of the second on a Sally Fairbank RBI double to narrow the lead to 2-1 but would get no closer. ABAC scored five times over the final three innings to put away the six-run win. The Fillies out hit the Chargers eleven to four. The two teams battled into extra innings in Game 2, exchanging the lead three times. The Chargers scored single runs in four of the first five frames to take a 4-0 lead, but ABAC tied the game with a four-run sixth inning to send the contest to extra innings. Both teams scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings before ABAC broke the game open with a six-run top of the tenth that included a grand slam by Sutton Bridges. Taylor Layfield (10 IP, 4R, 2ER, 7H, 2BB, 7K) went all ten innings in the pitching circle for ABAC in the Game 2 win. Samantha Davis (7 IP, 1ER, 4H, 1BB, 3K) was a complete game winner in the opener. Alexis Meadows, Layfield, and Bridges combined for seven hits and ten RBI in the extra innings win. ABAC’s Layfield, Braxton Hill, and Meadows each homered and combined for six hits and six RBI in the first game win. Mallory Alford, Deyonce Lewis (RBI), and Lexi Palazzo (RBI) had a pair of hits each for Georgia Highlands in the doubleheader. Sierrah Gani (2 RBI), Fairbank (RBI), Alexis Davis, Kayla Laukka, and Mya Adams had one hit each in the twin bill. Abraham Baldwin improved to 35-15 on the year and 21-5 in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association games. The Chargers will be the 3-seed in the GCAA tournament May 3-4 in Locust Grove.

The Adairsville girls soccer team lost to eighth-ranked Lumpkin County Tuesday night at Tiger Valley to bring the Lady Tigers’ 2019 season to a close. Adairsville battled the visiting Indians well into the second half, but ultimately fell 4-1 in the first round game of the GHSA Class AAA state tournament. The Lady Tigers’ defensive backline and some solid goalkeeping by senior Havyn Isaac helped Adairsville reach intermission in a scoreless tie. Lumpkin County scored first in the second half to take a 1-0 lead, but sophomore Cat Wheeler scored her 28th gaol of the year to tie the game 1-1. The goal by Wheeler broke the Adairsville school record for goals by a sophomore. The Indians (12-6) kept up the pressure, however, and scored the final three goals of the contest to advance to the Round of 16. Adairsville finishes the season with a 10-5-1 mark, qualified for the state playoffs for a seventh consecutive season, and was Region 6-AAA runner-up.

Georgia Highlands’ baseball built a big lead Tuesday afternoon then held off a late rally by East Georgia for a 10-6 win at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson. The win also clinched a conference tournament berth for the Chargers with five conference games remaining. Tuesday, the Chargers scored in each of their first four offensive frames and held a 6-2 advantage through six innings. They then added four more runs in the seventh to lead 10-2. The visiting Bobcats threatened with four runs in the top of the ninth and had the bases loaded, when Chargers’ head coach Dash O’Neill inserted pitcher Dalton Rhadans. Rhadans got a groundout to end the threat and GHC had a four-run win in the first game of four this week with East Georgia. The Bobcats out hit the Chargers twelve to nine, but Georgia Highlands was able to convert more often. Ethan Underwood (8 IP, 5R, 4ER, 10H, 0BB, 5K) collected the pitching victory with a solid eight inning performance despite running into trouble in the ninth. Logan Ward (0.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) got the first two outs of the final inning and Rhadans (0.1 IP) needed only three pitches to close out the contest. East Georgia utilized five pitchers with starter Brandon Blume (4 IP, 6R, 5ER, 7H, 2BB, 1K) taking the loss. Jonathan Lueguering (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB), Jasper Dubberly (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K), Jared Dole (0.2 IP, 4R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K), and Jacob Tate (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) also took the mound for the Bobcats. Rick Mitchell led East Georgia with four hits and one RBI. Indiana Stanley followed with three hits including a solo home run. Trenton Parker also homered for the Bobcats. Bryson Horne paced the Chargers with three hits including a double and four RBI. Hunter Moody had two hits including a double and one RBI. Trace Twardoski hit a solo home run while Skylar McPhee (RBI), Parker Orr, and Austin Foster (RBI) added one hit apiece. Malik Spratling drove in a GHC run with a groundout in the first inning. With the win, the third place Chargers pick up a game in the conference standings on second place East Georgia. He tossed a scoreless ninth inning last Tuesday with one strikeout and did not allow a baserunner in a 10-1 loss to Reno. He then worked scoreless seventh and eighth innings Friday night to combine with Ryan Castellani and Jesus Tinoco for a 6-0 shutout of Tacoma. Howard yielded three hits and struck out one. SOFTBALL SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (So., OF, Cass HS)… went 2-for-6 with a double, a walk, and scored three runs in the Chargers’ only doubleheader of the week — a sweep of visiting Andrew College last Thursday. Gani leads the GCAA with a .465 batting average through 41 games. She has 53 hits in 114 at bats with 40 RBI and 15 extra base hits. She was named All-Conference Second Team. GHC (24-16, 15-9) has already qualified for the four-team GCAA Championship Tournament, but has conference doubleheaders this week at home against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Tuesday and West Georgia Tech Saturday. SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Sr., C/Inf., Woodland HS)… went 5-for-18 including a double, a walk, and three RBI in five games last week. The Panthers split a doubleheader at Judson College (AL) in their final regular season games, before dropping their opening round best-of-three conference tournament series at Huntingdon College (AL). LaGrange won one of three games in the series and finished the year with a 16-17 record. Hodorff, who was honored by the USA South Athletic Conference as an All-Sportsmanship recipient, hit for a .271 batting average and hit three home runs with 19 RBI in 31 games her senior season. HANNAH KNAPP — Talladega College (Jr., C/UT, Adairsville HS)… was 0-for-4 in a pair of home games against Auburn University-Montgomery. The Tornadoes also had a pair of unreported home games with Judson College and close the regular season Tuesday at Hiwassee College. Talladega, an NAIA independent, is 4-26. PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… was 2-for-7 with two doubles and scored a run in a home doubleheader sweep last Tuesday of 23rd-ranked Georgia College. The Cougars (31-13, 11-3 Peach Belt Conference) are second in the league behind NCAA D-II 4th-ranked North Georgia and travel to Dahlonega Wednesday for a conference doubleheader. They then close out the regular season Friday and Saturday with PBC doubleheaders at home against UNC-Pembroke and Georgia Southwestern. The conference championship tournament will be May 3-4 at North Georgia. HANNAH TODD — Kansas University (So., P, Cartersville HS)… made two appearances at 16th-ranked Texas Tech last week in Big 12 Conference games. She was not eligible for a save Thursday but closed out the final inning of a 6-4 win. Todd faced seven batters and allowed only one earned run (three total) on five hits. Friday she recorded the final five outs in a 10-2 loss to the Red Raiders. Todd yielded a pair of earned runs (three total) on three hits and a walk. She rang up one batter. Kansas (15-29, 3-9) hosts Texas for a three-game conference series Friday through Sunday. ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Sr., P, Cartersville HS)… went five and one-third innings in a home start and 7-4 comeback win Saturday over Mercer. Yantis gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits and did not walk a batter. She had one strikeout in a non-decision. Samford (21-26, 10-4 Southern Conference) has a week off before hosting UAB in a non-conference matchup Tuesday, April 30. COLLEGE BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Jr., LHP, Cartersville HS)… closed out the final four innings of Auburn’s 5-3 loss to Ole Miss Friday at home. He entered in the sixth inning with the Tigers trailing 3-2 and faced 18 batters. He allowed a pair of earned runs on four hits and two walks and fanned five. For the season, Anderson is 5-1 with a 3.16 ERA in 37 innings across 18 appearances. He has 41 strikeouts. 25th-ranked Auburn (26-14, 10-8 SEC) was 2-2 last week with a loss to 11th-ranked Georgia Tech and wins in two of three games of a conference series with 19th-ranked Ole Miss. The Tigers travel to Jacksonville State Tuesday and Vanderbilt this weekend for an SEC three-game series. LEVI AYERS — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… appeared in two games last week for the Chargers tossing a total of six innings. He gave up two earned runs on a pair of hits and four walks last Monday in three and two-thirds innings of a 21-8 win at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. He struck out three ABAC batters. Saturday, he allowed two earned runs on two hits in two and one-third innings with a pair of punchouts. Georgia Highlands (27-20, 13-11) begins a four-game conference series with East Georgia CC Tuesday at LakePoint and will finish the series Friday and Saturday in Swainsboro at EGCC. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (So., 1B/DH, Cass HS)… went 1-for-3 with a walk in a start last Wednesday and a 7-0 loss at Southern Wesleyan. He also had an unsuccessful pinch hitting appearance Friday at Columbus State in a 6-5 loss. The Mountain Lions salvaged the third game of the series at CSU on Saturday for their only win of the week. HUNTER HICE — USC-Upstate (Fr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… had one pinch hitting appearance last week, but struck out, in a 9-6 home loss Thursday to Campbell. The Spartans split two games with the visiting Camels and had one game of the Big South Conference series cancelled by rain. KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (Fr., LHP, Woodland HS)… started and picked up the pitching win last Tuesday over visiting Clark Atlanta University. The southpaw struck out nine and scattered four hits and two walks in allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings. The 13-6 win was Jinks’ second collegiate victory. He then faced three seventh inning batters in an 11-10 loss at 2nd-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan last Thursday. Osborn struck out the first batter he faced, but then yielded a double and a walk and was lifted. MASON ROBINSON — Louisiana Tech (R-Sr., OF, Woodland HS)… was 4-for-12 with five walks and one RBI in four starts last week. The Bulldogs won at Louisiana-Monroe and took two of three home games against Marshall. Robinson has a .328 batting average in 131 at-bats this season with three home runs and 20 RBI. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON -- Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; Argentine League; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)... led Villa San Martin in scoring in each of the team’s first two playoff games, finishing with 15 points apiece in both contests. He added 11 total rebounds and four combined assists across the two games. Villa San Martin won its postseason opener Friday against Obera TC by a 71-68 final before dropping Sunday’s Game 2 by an 83-75 margin. Game 3 of the series is scheduled for Wednesday. GOLF LINDSEY BONNER -- York College (So., Cartersville HS)... finished ninth individually in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament to help York win its first league title in only the program’s second year of existence. She shot her best round on Day 3 to push the Spartans past Christopher Newport, beating out the runner-up by a single stroke, 989 to 990. Bonner shot 87, 88 and 83 for a three-day total of 258 — one shot ahead of teammate Emma Harding for fourth on the team. Having placed between sixth and 10th overall, Bonner earned second-team all-CAC honors. Despite winning the conference title, York doesn’t receive automatic selection to the NCAA Division III tournament. However, the program could earn an at-large bid. The Spartans weren’t listed in the most recent rankings on the NCAA website from April 12, but Christoper Newport was No. 23. The tournament field will be announced May 6 ahead of the event, held May 14-17 at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER -- Ball State University (Sr., (Cartersville, GA) Laurel Springs Academy)... While apparently battling a leg injury, Gollhofer had her toughest day of the year in Saturday’s Senior Day matchup against Akron. She came up short on Line 1 doubles, falling by a 6-3 score alongside Victoria Sec. In singles action, Gollhofer dropped a marathon Line 2 match. She overcame a first-set defeat but ultimately lost a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 decision, which allowed Akron to pull out a 4-3 win. Gollhofer will look to heal up ahead of this weekend’s Mid-American Conference tournament. Fourth-seeded Ball State will face No. 5 seed Toledo in the opening round Friday in Buffalo, New York. The Cardinals routed the Rockets 7-0 in the regular season. TRACK AND FIELD TREVOR KNOWLES -- Albion College (So., Woodland HS)... landed three top-four finishes in helping Albion finish second Friday in the Wittenburg Invitational. He placed third in both the long jump (6.49 meters) and triple jump (13.13 meters), while finishing fourth in the high jump (1.75 meters).

The Woodland girls and boys track and field teams finished in the upper half of teams scored at the Wolf Nation: Under the Lights meet held at Barron Stadium in Rome Friday night. For the local competitors, the event served as a tuneup for next week’s Region 7-AAAAA Championships to be held in the same stadium. It should also be noted that not all schools sent full teams to the competition. Rylee Evans won the girls 3200 meter race and Grace Webb took the girls high jump title to lead the Wildcats. Woodland also had five runner-up finishers. The Woodland girls placed fourth of eight teams with 53 points. Rome won the girls title with 170 points, followed by Pepperell (70) and Guntersville, AL (60). The Woodland boys finished fifth of ten teams collecting points. The Cass baseball team wrapped up its 2019 season Friday night with a 10-5 loss at 8th-ranked Carrollton. The Colonels and Trojans traded runs early with Carrollton scoring four times in the bottom of the first and Cass responding with three in the next inning. Carrollton again extended their lead to 7-3 and Cass narrowed the margin to 7-5 in the fifth inning, but would get no closer. The Trojans utilized five different pitchers with starter Kannen Christian picking up the win. Zack Broome, Zeke McDonald, Chris Gaiter, and Ryan Anderson also pitched for Carrollton. Blaine Ingram had two hits in the Colonels’ loss. Bryson Markley had a double and finished with three RBI. Kyle Miller contributed a hit and two RBI while Jayden Smith added one hit. Cass starting pitcher Jordan Gani (2 IP, 6R, 4ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K) was tagged with the loss. Thomas Botts (4 IP, 4R, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 5K) entered in the third inning and closed out the contest on the mound for the Colonels. The win for Carrollton was their ninth straight to finish the regular season 24-5. The Trojans finished 13-3 in Region 7-AAAAA and in a three-way tie at the top of the region standings with Kell and East Paulding. Cass finished the year 7-19 overall and was 3-13 in region play.
