The Georgia Highlands College softball team secured a spot in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs with a doubleheader sweep of Andrew College Thursday at Stars Field in Cassville. The Chargers won the opener 12-5 before blanking the Tigers in the second game, 10-0. Kayla Laukka had a monster day at the plate going 4-for-6 with a home run, three doubles, and 10 RBI in the doubleheader. Deyonce Lewis also had a four-hit day and finished with two RBI for the Chargers. Mya Adams and Lexi Palazzo contributed three hits and one double each. Sierrah Gani, Jazzmyn Shelton, and Alexis Davis added two hits each in the doubleheader. Kara Kight (7 IP, 5R, 3ER, 10H, 3BB, 4K) was the winning pitcher in Game 1 and also homered in the game. Haley Robinson (5 IP, 0R, 6H, 0BB, 2K) earned the win in the circle in Game 2. The losses drop Andrew to 17-30 on the season and 7-17 in conference play. Due to impending weather, home games scheduled for Saturday have been moved to next Tuesday afternoon when Georgia Highlands (24-16, 15-9) will host Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Chargers will then conclude the regular season Saturday, April 27 at home with a conference doubleheader against West Georgia Tech. The GCAA conference tournament will include the top four teams in the conference and will be May 3 and 4 at Strong Rock Christian in Locust Grove.

The Cartersville girls tennis team defeated second round opponent Flowery Branch 3-1 Thursday at Dellinger Park to advance to the Class AAAA quarterfinals. The Lady Canes picked up a win from Emily Bush at Line 2 singles and won both doubles lines to secure the team victory. Lydia Wiedetz and Alice Terry closed out the match with their win at Line 1 doubles after Mia Shaw and Mason Cline took care of business at Line 2 doubles. Cartersville’s Line 1 singles stalwart, Ashley Popham (photo), was up a set and leading 4-1 in the second set when her match was pulled. The lone Flowery Branch win came at Line 3 singles. The Lady Canes will now face the Eastside/Richmond Academy winner next week in the Elite Eight.

The Cass girls soccer team finished their 2019 season Thursday evening with a 3-2 win at Coahulla Creek sending nine senior playoffs off with a win in their final game. Senior and University of North Georgia signee, Logan Vermaas scored her 21st goal of the year and added her seventh assist of the season. Maddie Shook scored her third goal of the season and contributed her 17th assist while senior Lupita Pineda added a goal and Leidi Toribio had one assist. The loss dropped Coahulla Creek’s season record to 12-4-2. The Lady Colonels finished the season with an 8-9-1 record and placed fifth in Region 7-AAAAA with a 4-4 mark. COAHULLA CREEK 9, CASS BOYS 1 Coming off back-to-back draws, the Colonels suffered a 9-1 loss in their final game of the season at Coahulla Creek. The lone Cass goal came off the foot of Magno Moreno off an assist from Alfred Chege. The host Colts improved to 14-3 with their victory. The Colonels’ season ends with a 3-11-3 record. CALHOUN 4, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 0 The Adairsville girls soccer team will head into the Class AAA state tournament as the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAA following a 4-0 loss Thursday night at Calhoun. The Yellow Jackets (11-3, 7-1) win the region title with Adairsville advancing as the region runner-up. The Lady Tigers will host the No. 3-seed from Region 8-AAA, Lumpkin County, Tuesday in Tiger Valley. CALHOUN 6, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 Calhoun scored three times in each half in a 6-0 win over Adairsville. Adairsville keepers Tyrek Bryant and Noah Grisham combined for 30 saves. Calhoun improved to 8-7-1. Adairsville finished 2-11. ALLATOONA 5, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2 Host Allatoona outscored the Lady Canes 3-0 in the second half for a non-region win Thursday evening, 5-2. “We played well against a tough opponent,” said Cartersville girls’ coach Chad Murray. “We just made a few mistakes that cost us.” Cartersville played the Lady Bucs to a 2-2 tie in the first half. Micah Vance scored an unassisted goal for Cartersville in the game’s 12th minute and Kendyl Anderson added the Hurricanes’ second goal in the 25th minute assisted by Abbey Craig. Class 6A Allatoona improved to 9-5-1 with their win. Cartersville (10-5-1) will host Oconee County in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs next Thursday (April 25) in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Weinman Stadium. ALLATOONA 3, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 2 The Canes had a second half lead Thursday night, but a pair of goals by the host Buccaneers in the final twenty minutes lifted Allatoona to a 3-2 non-region win. Brady Craig had Cartersville’s first half goal to send the Hurricanes to the intermission tied 1-1. Pedro Ghanem found the back of the net early in the second half to give Cartersville a 2-1 advantage. The Buccaneers improved to 10-4 on the season. Cartersville (7-7) opens the Class AAAA state playoffs next Friday at 6 p.m. at home against Madison County (9-6-2).

A trio of Cartersville pitchers combined for a two-hitter and nine strikeouts Thursday evening as the Hurricanes won at Chapel Hill, 12-0. Logan Martin (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 5K, photo) started and improved to 6-0 on the year with a scoreless performance for three innings. J.P. Martin (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) and Reece Thompson (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K) pitched in relief to complete the shutout of the Panthers. Nine different Canes’ had one hit apiece. Jackson Norris and Peyton Willoughby both contributed doubles and finished with two RBI each. Chandler Tromza had a hit and a sacrifice fly to finish with a pair of RBI. Hank Smith (RBI), Noah Davis (RBI), Davis Williams (RBI), Thomas Murphy, and Hunter Payne had the other Cartersville base hits. Alan Thacker added one RBI with a sac fly. Chapel Hill finishes its season with a 6-16-1 record and was 2-10 in Region 5-AAAA. Third-ranked Cartersville (24-4, 11-1) had already secured the region championship and will host River Ridge Saturday at Richard Bell Field at 1 p.m. prior to hosting the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs beginning next Wednesday. With Thursday's win, the Hurricanes also tied the school record for regular season wins and will now have a shot at breaking that record Saturday. The Canes’ state playoffs opening round opponent will be the No. 4 seed from Region 8-AAAA. That region still has games to play Friday. Cartersville’s opponent will be either Oconee County or St. Pius pending Friday’s outcomes. ADAIRSVILLE 8, MURRAY COUNTY 7 (8 innings) The Adairsville Tigers closed out the 2019 baseball season with an 8-7 come-from-behind, home region win Thursday over Muray County in eight innings. Adairsville’s Chase Horn singled home Logan Hunt with two outs for the walk-off win. The visiting Indians scored four runs in the top of the first inning and led 7-2 before the Tigers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to ultimately send the game to extra innings. The Tigers’ Levi Blackwell (3 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 5K) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Noah Nation (5 IP, 6R, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 3K). B.J. Roper had two hits including a triple and one RBI. Elijah Padgett also finished with two hits and drove in a run. Logan Hunt (triple, two RBI), Kyler Smith (RBI), Jacob Ray (RBI), Trace Still (double), Landon Ayers (double), and Wade Conduff had one hit each. Blackwell drove in a run with a sac fly. Murray County finished the year 2-23. Adairsville finished the season with a 6-15 record. KELL 12, WOODLAND 0 Third-ranked Kell rolled up ten runs in the first two innings Thursday evening a cruised to a 12-0, five inning victory over visiting Woodland. Longhorns’ starting pitcher Noah Dawkins limited the Wildcats to only two hits and two walks in a complete-game effort. He struck out three. Jay Inglis had a pair of doubles and drove in a run. Rylie O’Brien also had two hits including a solo home run in the fourth inning to help pace the Longhorns’ attack. Dallas Adams had a first inning single for Woodland and Scotty Smith singled in the second. Bailey Ward (1.1 IP, 9ER, 4H, 2BB, 3K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Ben Ammons (2.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 3K) finished the game on the mound for the Wildcats after entering in the second inning. Kell improved to 21-6 overall and finished the Region 7-AAAAA slate with a 13-3 mark. Woodland wraps up the season with an 11-15 overall record. The Wildcats were 7-9 and fifth in the region.

Cartersville High School’s track and field teams had ten athletes, including three region champions, to advance to the Class AAAA State Sectional Meet from Thursday’s Region 5-AAAA Championship Meet in Tyrone. Top four individuals in each event qualified for the State Sectionals where they will compete against top four placers from three other regions. Chapel Hill won both the girls and boys region championships Thursday with the girls scoring 168 points and the boys totaling 174. In the girls meet, Sandy Creek (149) was second followed by LaGrange (136.5), Cedartown (50.5), Troup (48), Cartersville (38), and Central-Carroll (28). For the boys, Sandy Creek (158) was runner-up followed by Cedartown (109), Cartersville (80), Central-Carroll (53), LaGrange (31), and Troup (8). Individual region qualifiers advance to one of two Class AAAA Sectionals. The Region 5-AAAA qualifiers are assigned to Sectional I at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus on Saturday, May 4. Koby Stansel tossed a complete-game, one-hitter Wednesday night at The Ballpark at Woodland and Zach Wilson delivered a seventh inning walk off RBI single as the Wildcats knocked off Class AAAAA third-ranked Kell 3-2 and celebrated their seniors’ final home game. Wilson (photo below) finished the night 2-for-3 and drove in all three of the Wildcats’ runs. Stansel (photo left, 7 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H, 4BB, 5K) allowed only a second inning single to the Longhorns’ Noah Dawkins, but defensive miscues by the Wildcats and walks enabled Kell to reach the final frame in a 2-2 tie. Woodland committed four errors in the contest. In addition to the production off Wilson’s bat, Woodland got a pair of hits from Dallas Adams including a double plus a double by Marco Haro and a single by Bailey Ward. The loss dropped Kell to 20-6 for the season and 12-3 in region action. It also placed the Longhorns in a four-way tie for first place in Region 5-AAAA with Carrollton, Rome, and East Paulding. All four teams have one region game remaining. Woodland (11-14, 7-8) is scheduled to complete the 2019 campaign and will look to play spoiler again Friday at Kell. Carrollton (23-5, 12-3) is in a four-way tie for first place in the league with each team having one regular season, region game remaining. The Trojans are scheduled to host Cass Friday at 5:55 p.m. while Kell entertains Woodland and Rome goes head-to-head with East Paulding in Dallas. Kannen Christian (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB) picked up Carrollton’s pitching win Wednesday in relief of starter Eli Runyan (4 IP, 3ER, 6H, 1BB, 4K). Tucker Sullivan (0.2 IP) and Sam Simpson (1.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 1K) also pitched for the Trojans. Jayden Smith (5.2 IP, 7R, 2ER, 9H, 2BB, 2K) was saddled with the pitching loss for the Colonels despite a solid outing. Two Cass errors led to five unearned runs. RINGGOLD 11, ADAIRSVILLE 1 The Adairsville High School baseball team dropped an 11-1, five-inning decision to visiting 5th-ranked Ringgold Wednesday evening at Tigers’ Field. Ringgold, who has locked up the Region 6-AAA title, raced to a 9-0 lead in the first two innings and added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Adairsville scored its run in the bottom of the fourth when Logan Hunt scored on a wild pitch after he had singled to start the inning. Wyatt Tennant had a pair of doubles and two RBI to pace the Ringgold attack. Four other visitors had one hit each. Wade Conduff, Trace Still, and B.J. Roper had two hits each for Adairsville. Evan Henry and Hunt had the other base hits for the locals. Mason Parker (3.1 IP, 1ER, 7H, 1BB, 5K) was the winning pitcher for Ringgold. The Hurricanes got a complete-game, shutout performance Wednesday night from pitcher Cohen Wilbanks and enjoyed a pair of two-run home runs from Kolby Adams and Josh Davis for a 5-0 win at Cedartown. The win — combined with Troup’s 4-3 walk-off loss at LaGrange — secured the twenty-sixth region baseball championship in program history for Cartersville. Wilbanks scattered five hits, needed only 76 pitches, and did not walk a batter in one of his best performances of the year. He fanned six Bulldogs. Adams’ two-run home run in the second inning gave the Canes an early lead. Preston Welchel doubled home Davis in the fifth to make the score 3-0, and Davis added a two-run homer in the top of the seventh for some Hurricanes’ insurance. Davis finished the night with three hits including his home run and a lead-off double to start the game. He also scored twice. Ian Inaba had two hits and scored a run. The other Canes’ hits were Adams’ dinger, Welchel’s RBI double, and a seventh inning single by Wilbanks. The loss evened Cedartown’s record at 14-14 overall and 6-6 in Region 5-AAAA. The Bulldogs will be the region’s fourth-seeded team in the state playoffs. Cartersville (23-4, 10-1) will wrap of their region slate Thursday at Chapel Hill at 5:55 p.m. and will host River Ridge Saturday at 1 p.m. in their regular season finale’. The Canes will host the fourth place team from Region 8-AAAA in the opening round of the state playoffs that begin next Wednesday. With two more region games remaining for most teams in Region 8-AAAA, the likely opponent for Cartersville will be Oconee County but St. Pius is a possibility.

The Georgia Highlands College baseball team went back-and-forth with West Georgia Tech Wednesday evening, but came away with an important 6-5 home conference win. There were four lead changes in the contest, but the Chargers went ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh with a three-run inning and then held off the Knights over the final two frames. Jacob Meyer (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Georgia Highlands in relief of starter Dalton Rhadans (6 IP, 3ER, 9H, 0BB, 6K). Logan Ward (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) did not allow a run while recording the final three outs for a save. Bryson Horne had three hits, a walk, and two RBI to lead the Chargers’ attack. Hunter Moody and Trace Twardoski (2 RBI) both finished with two hits including a double each. Blake Brady and Willis Kemp contributed one hit and one RBI apiece. Skylar McPhee and Parker Orr added one hit each. The loss drops West Georgia Tech to 16-24 for the year and 7-16 in conference action. Georgia Highlands (27-19, 13-10) remains in third place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association with seven league games remaining. The Chargers play at Gordon College Friday afternoon and start a four game series with East Georgia State Monday. The first of the four will be at LakePoint with the final three games of the series Friday and Saturday at East Georgia.

The Woodland girls tennis team was eliminated from the Class AAAAA state tournament Wednesday with a 3-1 loss at Riverwood. The Lady Cats’ only win came at Line 2 doubles where Abigail Spaulding and Monterya Morrow won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The Lady Raiders’ points came at the three singles positions. Woodland’s Breanna Shook lost 6-0, 6-0 at Line 1; Becky Wesley lost at Line 2 6-1, 6-1; and Kayla Gales dropped her Line 3 match 6-4, 6-3. The Line 1 doubles duo of Emma Savage and Eryn Gentry was pulled after splitting two closely contested sets. Riverwood advances to the Round of 16 where the Lady Raiders will host Clarke Central, a 5-0 first round winner over Arabia Mountain.

Cass (3-10-3) wraps up the 2019 campaign at Coahulla Creek Thursday evening at 7 p.m. LATE GOALS SPOIL LADY COLONELS SENIOR NIGHT Back to back goals by the visiting Lady Generals in the 70th and 71st minutes lifted visiting Heritage-Catoosa to a 2-1 win over Cass Tuesday night at Cochran Stadium. The Lady Colonels led for better than an hour in the contest after Jaden Musacchio found the back of the net in the second minute off a corner from Maddie Shook. The loss, as the Lady Colonels celebrated the careers of nine seniors in their final home game, dropped Cass to 7-9-1 on the season. Cass concludes the 2019 season with another non-region game at Coahulla Creek Thursday at 5:30 p.m. LADY TIGERS FALL IN OVERTIME The Adairsville girls lost their first Region 6-AAA game this season Tuesday night in a 5-4 overtime loss to visiting Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The Lady Tigers took an early 2-0 lead and led 4-2 at the intermission, but the visiting Warriors scored twice in the second half to send the game to overtime and took their only lead of the game in the game’s 86th minute. Cat Wheeler had two goals for Adairsville. Kaylee Jordan scored a goal and assisted one of the Wheeler scores. Megan Hardin scored the other Tigers’ goal on one of two assists in the game by Taylor Rhoades. Adairsville keeper Havyn Isaac finished with ten saves. The Lady Tigers (10-3-1, 6-1) travel to Calhoun (10-3, 6-1) Thursday with the Region 6-AAA title on the line. TIGERS LOSE IN OVERTIME The Adairsville boys soccer team took a 3-0 lead over visiting Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe into the intermission Tuesday night, but the Warriors outscored the Tigers 4-1 in the second half to send the game into overtime. LFO then outscored Adairsville 2-1 in the overtime periods to a 6-5 Region 6-AAA victory. Joseph Pacheco and Emanuel Lopez each scored twice for the Tigers and Angel Banda scored the other Adairsville goal. Tigers' Goalkeeper Tyrek Bryant recorded 22 saves in the loss. Adairsville concludes the season Thursday at Calhoun.
