The Tigers trailed 2-0 early, tied the game 2-2 in the third inning, but fell behind again when the Colts scored two runs in the fourth. Adairsville’s big inning built a 9-4 lead and the Tigers held off the Colts down the stretch for a one-run, Region 6-AAA road win. Levi Blackwell (2.1 IP, 4R, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Adairsville in relief of starter Elijah Padgett (3 IP, 3ER, 2H, 6BB, 1K). Wade Conduff (0.2 IP, 1ER, 0H, 2BB, 1K) retired the final two outs in the sixth inning and Noah Nation (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) earned a save with a scoreless seventh inning on the mound. Drew Sage (4 IP, 5R, 4ER, 5H, 1BB, 6K) suffered the pitching loss for Coahulla Creek. Matt Jenkins had three hits including a pair of doubles and three RBI to pace the Colts’ offense. The Cartersville High School tennis teams advanced in the Class AAAA state tournament Tuesday evening with the girls and boys taking first round matches over visiting Stephens County at Dellinger Park. The Lady Canes won 4-0 and the Hurricanes took a 3-0 victory. The Cartersville girls secured the team victory with wins from Ashley Popham at Line 1 singles, Emily Bush (photo) at Line 2 singles, Chloe Satterfield on the third singles line, and the Line 2 doubles tandem of Mason Cline and Mia Shaw. The Cartersville boys captured their first round win with a win at Line 2 singles by Luke Kotteman and victories at both doubles lines. Luke Gambill and Nate McDonald paired for the Canes’ Line 1 doubles win while John Blackhall and Jackson Cline won on Line 2. Will Allen (photo), the Canes' Line 1 singles player, was leading when the winning team point was secured and had his match halted. The Cartersville girls will host Flowery Branch in the next round with the match date to be determined. The Cartersville High School baseball team moved a step closer to securing the Region 5-AAAA championship Monday night at Richard Bell Field with a 9-1 win over Cedartown. The Canes still have region road games remaining at Cedartown Wednesday and at Chapel Hill Thursday. Third-ranked Cartersville currently leads Troup County by one game in the loss column with the Tigers concluding their region slate Wednesday at LaGrange. Monday night, the Canes took control early securing a 9-0 lead through the first four innings. The Bulldogs’ lone, unearned run came in the fifth inning off a pair of walks and an infield miscue. Cade Dingler, who doubled twice, had the only Cedartown hits. J.P. Martin hit a two-run home run in the second inning to get the Canes’ offense rolling. He later drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the Canes’ eighth run of the game in the fourth inning. Preston Welchel had two hits including a double and one RBI. Jordan Wilkie and Ian Inaba also had two hits and one RBI. Cohen Wilbanks and Mason Barnett added the other Hurricanes’ hits. Barnett (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 5BB, 9K) started on the mound and picked up his eighth win in nine starts this season. Gage Morris (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) fanned two of the four batters he faced in an inning of middle relief and Hayden Davidson (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K) worked two shutout innings to close things out. EAST PAULDING 12, CASS 4 The visiting Raiders charged to a 10-0 lead in the first three innings and held off Cass for a 12-4 win Monday at the Cass Athletic Complex. Seth Grenon and Brandon Haston combined for seven hits and five RBI for East Paulding. All four of Grenon’s hits were singles and he finished with two RBI. Haston singled, tripled, and homered in his three hits. Eli Studdard also hit a home run for the Raiders. Cole McDaniel (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 3K) and Haston (4 IP, 4R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) combined on the mound in East Paulding’s win. COOSA 9, WOODLAND 6 Woodland baseball exchanged the lead at Coosa Monday evening, but came up short in a 9-6 non-region loss. Woodland narrowed Coosa’s early lead to 4-2 in the third inning and grabbed a 6-4 advantage in the top of the sixth, but the host Eagles scored five times in the bottom of the sixth to take over the game late. The Georgia Highlands offense had one of its most productive games Monday night in a 21-8 conference win at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Chargers trailed 2-1 after three innings and the game was tied 4-4 after four frames, but Georgia Highlands scored seven runs in the top of the fifth to take control. Four more runs in the seventh and another six in the eighth inning put the game away. Three Chargers had four-hit games including Malik Spratling who hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs. Bryson Horne (double, two RBI) and Lavoisier Fisher (double and two triples, four RBI) also had four hits. Austin Foster had three hits including a double and one RBI. Skylar McPhee contributed two hits including a double, a home run, and four RBI. Hunter Moody had a hit and three RBI. Parker Orr drove in a run with one hit. Blake Brady and Trace Twardoski added one hit each. Ryan Smithson (1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 2K) picked up the Chargers’ pitching win in relief of starter Ethan Underwood (3.1 IP, 4ER, 6H, 0BB, 1K). Levi Ayers (3.2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 3K) closed out the final three and two-thirds innings. The loss drops ABAC to 11-28 overall and 5-17 in conference games. Georgia Highlands (26-19, 12-10) hosts West Georgia Tech Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at LakePoint and travels to Gordon College Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The Adairsville boys tennis team, appearing in the state tournament for the first time since 2014, was eliminated Monday by Greater Atlanta Christian in the opening round of the Class AAA bracket. GAC, Region 7-AAA champs, won all five lines in straight sets to advance to the Round of 16. The Spartans will face the Westminster/Jackson County winner in Round 2. Adairsville was represented by its standard lineup of Jack Bates, Cameron O’Neal, and Oak Hemby at Line 1-3 singles. Landon Swanson and Cody Kimbrough played Line 1 doubles with Zach Ogle and Tristin Alford representing the Tigers at Line 2 doubles. Adairsville, a four-seed from Region 6-AAA finished the regular season 6-5, went 1-2 in the region tournament, and finished the post season with a 7-8 mark.

For the week, Fox was 5-for-9 with a stolen base. In her first college season, Fox hit .279 with seven RBI in 27 games. Agnes Scott finished the year by missing the USA South Conference tournament with a 6-28 overall record. The Scotties were 3-13 in the conference. SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (So., Inf., Cass HS)… heading into the final two weeks of the regular season, Gani continues to lead the Chargers with a .472 batting average and has 40 RBI in 39 games played. In doubleheaders last week against conference leading Georgia Military College and Gordon State CC, Gani was 6-for-11 at the plate with a double, a walk, two RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. GHC split games with both conference foes. PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… in their only two games this past week, the Cougars split a home conference doubleheader with Francis Marion University Saturday. The Cougars’ right fielder has started 38 games this season and appeared in 39 with a .265 batting average. She has 18 RBI and a pair of homers among 14 extra base hits. She retired the only batter faced in the sixth inning of Friday’s 10-0 loss. She retired the only two batters she faced in the seventh inning of Saturday’s 5-0 loss, and entered with only one out in the first inning in Sunday’s 8-0 loss working five innings. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Albuquerque Isotopes (6th yr. pro; Triple-A Pacific Coast League; Colorado Rockies’ organization; LHP; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS)… made relief appearances last Wednesday and Saturday at Reno and at Tacoma. Howard earned his first win of the year with two and one-third innings of work at Reno. He entered with two outs in the fifth inning and did not allow a run. He scattered three hits and a walk with one strikeout as the Isotopes trumped the Aces 13-2. Saturday at Tacoma, Howard worked the final two innings of an 11-2 win over the Rainiers. Anderson (5-1) gave up four earned runs on two hits and two walks with one strikeout against the Gamecocks. In a 4-1 loss at 11th-ranked Texas A&M Sunday, he entered in the fourth inning with the Tigers trailing 3-1 and worked four and two-thirds innings. In Friday’s game, he made a sliding catch in foul territory to end the third inning with the Bulldogs ahead 2-0. The catch came with the bases loaded to end an Owls’ threat. In Sunday’s game, Robinson ran full speed into the fence lining right field foul territory and flipped over the barrier but held on for a catch for the first out of the game. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON -- Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; Argentine League; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)... Robinson led Villa San Martin in scoring during a pair of wins last week. He scored 23 points and added five rebounds in an 80-76 win over Echague last Tuesday. Robinson followed that up with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, while chipping in with four assists, during an 81-69 triumph over Hindu Club on Friday. GOLF LINDSEY BONNER -- York College (So., Cartersville HS)... saw a first-round lead slip away on the second day of the Gettysburg Invitational to finish runner-up in the event. Despite the team's second-round slide, Bonner improved over the weekend. She shot 88 on Saturday and 84 on Sunday to finish 13th in the 33-person field. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER -- Ball State University (Sr., Cartersville, GA; Laurel Springs Academy)... Gollhofer didn't have to do much to help the Cardinals to a 7-0 rout of Northern Illinois on Sunday. She teamed with Isabelle Dohanics for a 6-3 win on Line 2 doubles, but the dominant senior wasn't needed in singles play, as more inexperienced players still managed to shut out the Huskies. Ball State will close out the regular season against Akron on Saturday. The two teams will enter the match tied for third in the Mid-American Conference at 4-2. TRACK AND FIELD TREVOR KNOWLES -- Albion College (So., Woodland HS)... won the high jump and placed third in the long jump in Albion's home tri-match on Friday. He cleared 1.90 meters in the high jump and leapt 6.38 meters in the long jump.

Georgia Highlands softball split a conference doubleheader at Gordon State College Saturday with a 3-2 loss in the first game and a 5-4 extra innings win in Game 2. The Chargers were limited to only three hits in the opener by Highlanders’ pitcher Madison Powell (7 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K). Mallory Alford doubled. Alexis Davis had a hit and one RBI and Sydney McDonald had one hit for GHC. Pitcher Kara Kight drove in a Chargers’ run with a second inning groundout. Kight (6 IP, 3ER, 7H, 1BB, 3K) also suffered the pitching loss despite a solid, complete-game effort. In Game 2, Georgia Highlands came from behind for a win in eight innings. Haley Robinson (8 IP, 4ER, 9H, 1BB) was the Chargers’ complete-game pitcher. Lexi Palazzo had two hits including a solo home run in the second inning that gave the Chargers an early 1-0 lead. Georgia Highlands baseball dropped a conference doubleheader Saturday at LakePoint to visiting Andrew College, falling 9-6 and 8-2. The sweep by the Tigers earned a split in the four-game series for the week. The Chargers had won the first two games of the series in one-sided games. Cotton Phillips (4 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 4K) was the opening game winner for Andrew Saturday with four innings of relief work for starting pitcher Hunter Norman (4 IP, 6ER, 8H, 2BB, 5K). Justin Barr was 4-for-4 with a walk and three RBI to lead the Tigers’ offense. Joey Fletcher and L.J. Bryant both added a pair of hits and two RBI apiece. Early defensive mistakes cost Georgia Highlands. The Chargers gave up five unearned runs in the first three innings and six unearned in the games. Georgia Highlands trailed 5-1 early, but held a 6-5 lead through five innings only to have the Tigers send the game to extra innings with a run in the sixth. Andrew posted three runs in the top of the eighth inning and Phillips allowed a double, but worked a scoreless inning to complete the Tigers’ win. Skylar McPhee had three hits for the Chargers in the first game. Malik Spratling had two hits including a double, a home run, and four RBI. In Game 2 Andrew scored three times in the second inning, added a single run in the fourth, and four more in the fifth inning on their way to a six-run win. Georgia Highlands cut the lead to 3-1 in the second inning and scored a run in the fifth after the Tigers had taken an 8-1 lead. Daniel Lee (4.2 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 6K) and Chandler Griggs (2.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 2K) combined on the mound for Andrew. Bryant and Clint Sellers combined for five hits and three RBI. Parker Orr had three hits including a solo home run for the Chargers. Blake Brady, Trace Twardoski, and Hunter Moody (RBI) had the other GHC hits. With Saturday’s wins, Andrew improves to 22-25 overall and 10-11 in conference play. Georgia Highlands (25-19, 11-10) travels to ABAC Monday, hosts West Georgia Tech Wednesday night, and travels to Gordon College Friday afternoon.

There was plenty of fishing action on Lake Allatoona Saturday morning as boys and girls representing seven high schools and a pair of middle schools competed in an Amateur High School Bass Anglers event. The high school competitors represented Adairsville, Calhoun, Cartersville, Cass, Gordon Central, Sonoraville, and Woodland. The middle school competitors represented Calhoun and Cass Middle Schools.

Inclement weather postponed one set of games this past week for Cartersville Little League baseball, but the games of April 11 are capsuled below. Cartersville took over sole possession of first place in Region 5-AAAA Friday night with a 6-2 win at Sandy Creek. The win over the Patriots, coupled with a Troup loss to Cedartown, means the Canes now have a one-game lead in the region standings over the Tigers. Cartersville started fast with five runs in the top of the first and added a run in the fourth inning for a 6-0 advantage. Sandy Creek (6-21, 0-10) scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Canes’ starting pitcher, Logan Martin, improved to 6-0 with a ten strikeout performance. Gage Morris struck out the only batter he faced to finish up the sixth inning, and J.P. Martin fanned one in a scoreless seventh. Cohen Wilbanks (photo) had a three hit game for the Hurricanes. Ian Inaba followed with a pair of hits and a walk. Preston Welchel drove in three runs with a double and a walk. Brant Smith and Mason Barnett had a double and one RBI each. Josh Davis also chipped in with a base hit. Cartersville (21-4, 8-1) host Cedartown Monday at 5:55 p.m. at Richard Bell Field. EAST PAULDING 8, CASS 1 East Paulding took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, added a single run in the fourth, and four more in the fifth in an 8-1 win over the visiting Colonels Friday night. Cass scored its lone run in the fifth inning on a double steal play by Bryson Markley and Thomas Botts. Botts singled to start the inning and moved to third on Markley’s single. East Paulding pitcher Jackson Phipps (6 IP, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 10K) started on the mound and collected the win. Andrew Pendleton (1 IP, 0R, 1H) recorded the final three outs for the Raiders. Jayden Smith (4.1 IP, 8R, 6ER, 9H, 1BB, 5K) suffered the Colonels’ pitching loss. Blaine Ingram (1.2 IP, 0R, 1BB, 1K) entered in the fifth inning.
