Georgia Highlands College baseball won its second one-sided game in a row over Andrew College Friday night with a 19-2 win at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers won 16-7 at Andrew Wednesday to open the four-game conference series. Friday night, GHC sent a dozen men to the plate and scored nine times in the second inning to take a big lead early. The Chargers also finished the night with five home runs. Malik Spratling went 3-for-5 with a double, two homers, and six RBI. Blake Brady, Lavoisier Fisher, and Parker Orr also homered. Orr's homer was part of a three-hit game. Dalton Rhadans (6.1 IP, 2ER, 10H, 3BB, 9K) started on the mound and earned the pitching win. Levi Ayers (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H) wrapped up the game on the mound for the Chargers. GHC started the conference series Wednesday with a 16-7 blow out win at Andrew in Cuthbert. Orr, Skylar McPhee, Keith Lyle, and Hunter Moody combined for 14 of Georgia Highlands’ 20 hits as the quartet drove in a dozen runs in the series opening win. Ethan Underwood picked up his first pitching win for the Chargers with five innings of work after entering in the third inning. He allowed a solo home run and one walk in the appearance while fanning five. Brant Brown, Dalton Rhadans, Trace Twardoski, and Logan Ward all tossed one inning each for Georgia Highlands on Wednesday. The Chargers (25-17, 11-8) and Andrew (20-25, 8-11) will conclude the conference series Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.

The Cartersville and Cass boys track and field teams finished first and second respectively, while the Cartersville girls were second in a five-way meet Thursday at Gordon Central High School in Calhoun. Cartersville won the boys meet with 129 points. Cass was second with 99 and host Gordon Central was third with 70 points. Sonoraville won the girls meet with 100 points. Cartersville tied Gordon Central for second with 90 points. The Cass girls were fifth with 18 points. The Adairsville baseball team came-from-behind Thursday evening to take the lead at Sonoraville with a five-run fourth inning then held on late for a 9-7 Region 6-AAA win. The Phoenix held leads of 3-0 after one inning and 6-3 after three, but the Tigers outscored Sonoraville 6-1 over the final four frames for the two-run victory. Noah Nation (4.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 4BB, 1K) allowed only one earned run to pick up the pitching win for Adairsville. Wade Conduff (2.1 IP, 5ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) also pitched for the Tigers. Grant Hegwood and Hagan Steely both had two hits to lead the Sonoraville offense as the Phoenix slipped to 10-12 overall and 5-7 in Region 6-AAA. Trace Still was the only Tiger with two hits. Landon Ayers drove in two runs and had a double. Jacob Ray (RBI), Kyler Smith (RBI), Levi Blackwell, B.J. Roper, Nation, and Conduff added one hit apiece. Adairsville (4-14, 3-9) travels to Coahulla Creek next Tuesday and will wrap up the regular season at home next Thursday and Friday against Murray County and Ringgold. All three games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m.

The Woodland High School girls tennis team dropped the Region 7-AAAAA third place consolation match to Hiram Thursday afternoon, but will advance to the Class 5A state tournament next week as a 4-seed. The Lady Cats’ Line 1 doubles tandem of Emma Savage and Eryn Gentry picked up the only Woodland win of the day with a straight sets 6-1, 6-3 victory. Breanna Shook at Line 1 singles and Kayla Gales at Line 3 singles took their matches to a third set, but lost. Shook won her opening set 6-4, but then lost 3-6, 3-6. Gales won her second set 6-3, but dropped the first and third sets by 1-6 scores. Woodland’s Line 2 doubles team of Abigail Spaulding and Monterya Morrow lost 3-6, 4-6 and Lady Cats’ Line 2 singles player, Becky Wesley, was pulled off the court when the team match was decided although Wesley was leading in the third set. Woodland (11-9) will open the state playoffs next week at the region champion from Region 6-AAAAA.

The Adairsville Lady Tigers picked up a non-region road victory Thursday night at Trion, winning 4-1. Cat Wheeler scored two goals for Adairsville with Sadye Johnson and Taylor Rhoades added the other goals. Hannah Deboard assisted Johnson in the third minute to give Adairsville a 1-0 lead. Wheeler made the score 2-0 just six minutes later off a feed from Rhoades. Wheeler found the back of the net again in the 15th minute off an assist from Skye Hancock, and Rhoades scored her goal off an assist from Elllie McBride in the 53rd minute for a Lady Tigers’ 4-0 lead. Trion scored in the 60th minute for the 4-1 final score. Adairsville keeper Havyn Isaac had four saves. The Lady Tigers (10-2-1) are scheduled to host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Tuesday and visit Calhoun next Thursday. TRION 1, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 Trion scored the game’s only goal early in the first half and made it stand up to edge visiting Adairsville Thursday night 1-0 in a non-region contest. The Tigers hammered the Bulldogs with 17 shots on goal, but the Trion defense and keeper were up to the task and preserved the shutout. Trion improved to 5-3-1 for the season. Adairsville keeper Tyrek Bryant had a strong night with 15 saves on the back end of the Tigers’ defense. Adairsville (2-10) hosts Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Tuesday evening. NORTH SPRINGS 3, CASS GIRLS 1 The Lady Colonels dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting North Springs Thursday night in non-region action at Doug Cochran Stadium. The only Cass goal was by University of North Georgia signee, Logan Vermaas (photo), who scored off a Maddie Shook corner kick. North Springs improved to 7-5-1 with their win. Cass (7-8-1) hosts Heritage-Catoosa next Tuesday and travels to Coahulla Creek next Thursday to wrap up the regular season.

Both Cartersville High School tennis teams won their Region 5-AAAA tournament championships Thursday afternoon at Dellinger Park. The Lady Canes defeated LaGrange 3-2 and the Cartersville boys followed with a 3-0 win over the Grangers. The win by the Cartersville girls avenged a regular season loss to the Lady Grangers who were unbeaten in region play this season. Ashley Popham and Emily Bush won singles matches for Cartersville with the Line 1 doubles tandem of Lydia Widetz and Alice Terry capturing the deciding team point with a 6-4, 6-4 win. The Canes got an easier win from Luke Kotteman at Line 2 singles and the Line 2 doubles team of John Blackhall and Jackson Cline were next to close out their LaGrange opponents. Senior Will Allen dropped his first set at Line 1 singles, but took the next two sets to secured the team win. Both Cartersville teams will host Stephens County next week in the opening round of the Class AAAA state tournament.

Georgia Highlands College softball split a home doubleheader Wednesday with conference leader Georgia Military College losing the opener 6-2, but taking the second game 6-0. The Chargers led 1-0 through four innings in the first game before the visiting Bulldogs posted six runs across the final three frames. In Game 2, GHC pitcher Haley Robinson (7 IP, 0R, 7H, 0BB, 1K) tossed a complete-game shutout for her sixth win of the year in the circle. Former Cass standout, Sierrah Gani (photo) and Kayla Laukka provided much of the offense in the victory. Gani was 4-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run. Laukka hit a home run and had a double with two RBI in a 2-for-3 performance. Catcher Jazzmyn Shelton also had two hits. Lexi Palazzo (RBI) and Sydney McDonald added one hit apiece in the victory. In the opening game loss, starting pitcher Kara Kight (7 IP, 6ER, 11H, 2BB, 1K) went the distance in the circle. Six Chargers — Mya Adams (RBI), McDonald (RBI), Mallory Alford, Laukka, Alexis Davis, and Gani — finished with one hit each. Despite the loss, Georgia Military stays atop the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association standings with a 32-13 overall record and 16-2 conference mark. Third place Georgia Highlands (21-15, 12-8) plays a conference doubleheader Saturday at Gordon College in Barnesville.

The Adairsville boys tennis team did not get the result they were after Thursday afternoon, but will nonetheless advance to the Class AAA state tournament next week. Playing in the Region 6-AAA third place consolation match, Adairsville lost to Sonoraville 3-1 and will now be a 4-seed in the state playoffs where they will travel to the champions of Region 7-AAA next Tuesday or Wednesday. The Adairsville boys last appeared in the state tennis tournament in 2014. The only Adairsville win came at the top doubles line. Landon Swanson and Cody Kimbrough won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Although the three singles lines were all won by Sonoraville, Roberson was pleased with his players’ performances. “Earlier in the season Sonoraville beat us handily 5-0,” said Tigers’ coach Michael Roberson. “Today every match was highly contested. The effort was definitely there. There was also a lot of encouragement coming from court to court among the guys, which was great to see. The guys have definitely grasped the concept of a team.” Jack Bates lost 3-6, 5-7 at Line 1. Cameron O’Neal fell 4-6, 2-6 at Line 2, and Oak Hemby lost 3-6, 4-6 at Line 3. The Line 2 doubles team of Zach Ogle and Tristin Alford had split sets, but had their match pulled when Sonoraville secured the overall team victory. Adairsville will learn their state playoff first round opponent later this week and Roberson says his team will be ready for the challenge. “It is great that our program gets this opportunity,” noted Roberson. “This has been a goal for the guys all year. We are very excited. Our approach will be the same as it has been all year — take one point at a time. We’ll play with no pressure and see where it takes us.”

The Woodland girls tennis team qualified for the Class AAAAA state tournament with a 3-0 Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinal win Wednesday over Rome. The Lady Cats lost in the semifinals to Carrollton, but will play Hiram Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. to determine the No. 3 and 4 seeds for the state playoffs. In the win over Rome, Breanna Shook won her Line 1 singles match 6-2, 6-3. Becky Wesley won at Line 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5, and the Line 1 doubles tandem of Emma Savage and Eryn Gentry came-from-behind in three sets to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. The Woodland boys were eliminated in the region quarterfinals Wednesday. Bryce VanOrder won 6-1, 6-0 and Connor Gunnell won 6-0, 6-1 at Line 1 and Line 2 singles, but Hiram took the match by a 3-2 team score.

Cartersville baseball survived a stiff challenge from visiting Sandy Creek Wednesday night at Richard Bell Field with a 6-5 walk-off win in the bottom of the seventh inning. Knotted 5-5 heading to the bottom of the seventh, Ian Inaba singled with one out and then scored on J.P. Martin’s walk-off double for a Region 5-AAAA victory. Cartersville led 1-0 in the second inning on Martin’s first RBI — a ground ball single back through the middle of the diamond. The visiting Patriots — who are still looking for their first region win of the year — tied the game 1-1 with a Glenn Green RBI double in the top of the third. Sandy Creek then sent eight men to the plate in the top of the fifth inning to score four runs on four hits and a walk. That gave the Patriots a 5-1 lead, but it would be short-lived. The Canes answered by sending nine of their own to the plate in the bottom of the frame to score four times on two walks, a catcher’s interference, and three consecutive singles. The result was another tie score at 5-5 until the final inning heroics. Gage Morris (2.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win for Cartersville in relief of starter Cohen Wilbanks (4.1 IP, 5R, 4ER, 5H, 2BB, 6K). Glenn Green (1.1 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 3K) was the losing pitcher for Sandy Creek in relief of Pats’ starter Connor Housely (5 IP, 5R, 3ER, 6H, 4BB, 5K). Six different Sandy Creek players finished with one hit each. Mason Barnett led the Cartersville attack with three hits including a double and one RBI. Martin had two hits including the walk-off double and two RBI. Josh Davis, Preston Welchel (RBI), Jordan Wilkie (RBI), and Inaba had the other Canes’ hits. Cartersville (20-4, 7-1) plays at Sandy Creek (6-20, 0-9) Friday at 5:55 p.m. EAST PAULDING 5, WOODLAND 0 East Paulding pitchers Cole McDaniel and Connor Vaughn combined to keep Woodland off the scoreboard Wednesday night for a 5-0 Region 7-AAAAA win at The Ballpark at Woodland. Starter McDaniel fanned four and scattered three hits in six innings of work. Vaughn allowed one hit and a walk with one strikeout in the seventh. Eli Studdard had three hits and one RBI to lead the Raiders’ offense. Jackson Phipps had two hits for East Paulding. Woodland starting pitcher Bailey Ward (6 IP, 4ER, 5H, 3BB, 3K) was saddled with the loss. Ben Ammons (1 IP, 1ER, 4H, 1K) retired the final three outs for the Wildcats. Scotty Smith was one of four Wildcats with one hit each. Smith’s safety was a double in the fifth inning. Dallas Adams, Toby Queen, and Ward had the other Woodland base hits. East Paulding improved to 17-7 overall and remains in second place in Region 7-AAAAA with a 10-2 mark. Woodland (10-14, 6-8) steps out of the region next Monday for a game at Coosa before closing out the season with a home-and-home series with 4th-ranked Kell on Wednesday and Friday. KELL 9, CASS 1 Cass baseball mustered only three hits Wednesday night and dropped a 9-1 Region 7-AAAAA decision at 4th-ranked Kell. The loss for the Colonels was their eleventh straight after a 7-6 start to the season. Kell pitchers Jack Gilmartin (5.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 4BB, 1K) and Matt Collins (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 1K) combined for the three-hitter. Four Longhorns combined for nine of Kell’s eleven hits. Sam Blancato had three hits including a triple. Brad Grenkoski doubled and tripled driving in three runs. Logan Smith had two hits including a double and one RBI while Jay Inglis added a two-hit performance. Cass scored a run in the top of the sixth, but also left the bases loaded. Matt Shook was stranded after a one-out double in the third and had a two-out single in the seventh inning. He also walked twice and scored the Colonels’ only run in the sixth inning. Bryson Markley had the only other Cass hit with a liner in the fifth inning. Thomas Botts (4 IP, 8R, 7ER, 9H, 1BB, 1K) was tagged with the Cass pitching loss. Blaine Ingram (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 4K) retired the final six outs for the Colonels. Kell improved to 20-4 overall and continues to lead the region with a 12-1 mark. Cass (7-17, 3-11) travels to East Paulding Friday at 5:55 p.m. NORTH MURRAY 11, ADAIRSVILLE 0 North Murray scored three runs in the third and eight in the fourth while shutting out Adairsville Wednesday as the Mountaineers beat the Tigers, 11-0. Logan McCurdy (4 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 3K) and Preston Poag, Jr. (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) combined on the mound to shutout Adairsville on two hits. Jordan Frazier hit a three-run home run in the third inning and Alex Hooper had two hits including a two RBI single in the fifth to lead the Mountaineers’ offense. Jacob Ray singled in the third inning and Landon Ayers had an infield hit in the fourth inning for the only Adairsville hits. Levi Blackwell (2.1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 4BB) started on the mound for the Tigers and took the loss. Braden Powell (0.2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K), Noah Simpson (0.1 IP, 4ER, 1H, 3BB), and Eli Agnew (1.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 2K) all pitched in relief. North Murray improved to 7-11 for the season and in now 5-9 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (3-15, 2-10) plays at Sonoraville Thursday.

The Adairsville boys tennis team won a Region 6-AAA quarterfinal match Wednesday at the Calhoun Recreation Center and will advance to the Class AAA state tournament for the first time since 2014. The Tigers defeated Coahulla Creek 3-2 with a pair of singles wins and a victory at Line 2 doubles. Cameron O’Neal defeated his Coahulla Creek opponent at Line 2 singles 6-3, 6-3 and the doubles tandem of Zach Ogle and Tristin Alford won 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 leaving the balance of the match on Oak Hemby at Line 3 singles. His three-set (6-4, 4-6, 6-2) win advanced the Tigers. Adairsville’s Landon Swanson and Cody Kimbrough lost at Line 1 doubles 4-6, 5-7 and Jack Bates fell at Line 1 singles, 1-6, 3-6. Wednesday afternoon, the Tigers lost to Calhoun 3-0. Bates lost at Line 1 singles 0-6, 0-6 and O’Neal fell at Line 2, 1-6, 0-6. Swanson and Kimbrough lost at Line 1 doubles, 2-6, 1-6. Once the Yellow Jackets had secured the three points needed to win the match, the remaining two matches were suspended. Hemby was trailing at Line 3 singles and the doubles team of Ogle/Alford trailed at Line 2 doubles. Adairsville will play in the Region 6-AAA third place match Thursday at 11 a.m. against Sonoraville in Calhoun. NORTH MURRAY 3, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 2 The Lady Tigers had their season end Wednesday in an opening round 3-2 loss to North Murray at the Region 6-AAA tournament in Calhoun. Adairsville’s Megan Smith and Madison Camp earned the Lady Tigers’ two wins. Smith won 6-2, 6-1 at Line 1 singles and Camp was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at Line 3. The duo of Kate Faulk and Joie Bryant extended their Line 2 doubles match to a third set before falling, 4-6, 6-2, 0-6. Olivia Long and Kayleigh Collum lost at Line 1 doubles 4-6, 2-6 and Alexandra Kanturek dropped her Line 2 singles match 3-6, 6-7 (6-3).

The Cartersville High School girls and boys tennis teams will play for the Region 5-AAAA championships Thursday afternoon at Dellinger Park after both teams advanced through opening rounds Wednesday. The Lady Canes and Canes will both square off against LaGrange for the region title with the girls match scheduled for 1:45 p.m. and the boys match to follow. The second-seeded Cartersville girls defeated Sandy Creek and Cedartown Wednesday to reach the finals. The top-seeded Hurricanes beat Central-Carroll in the semifinals after receiving an opening round bye. The region finals are expected to be tightly contested based on regular season results. Earlier this season, the LaGrange girls and the Cartersville boys won by 3-2 scores. Regardless of Thursday's outcome, all four teams have punched their tickets to the Class AAAA state tournament and all four will host opponents from Region 8-AAAA in the opening round as either No. 1- or No. 2-seeds. The GHSA requires first round state tournament matches to be completed by April 18.
