With two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning Friday night, Cartersville lead-off man Josh Davis lined a single into left field to score pinch-runner Hayden Davidson from second base to lift the Canes to a 2-1 Region 5-AAAA win over Troup County at Richard Bell Field. The next eight and one-half innings belonged to the pitchers. Troup starter Colby Williams (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 5H, 1BB, 9K) worked through seven innings and Daniel Martin (2.2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 2K) took the game into the tenth inning, but suffered the pitching loss. Cartersville starter Logan Martin (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 5H, 0BB, 14K) fanned 14 in a no-decision performance. Gage Morris (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K) entered in the eighth and picked up the pitching win with three shutout innings. The Canes finished with nine hits. Welchel was 2-for-4 in five plate appearances with a walk and one RBI. Mason Barnett doubled in the first inning. Kolby Adams, Brant Smith, Ian Inaba, Jordan Wilkie, and Cohen Wilbanks had the other Hurricanes’ hits. The loss leaves Troup at 6-12 overall and 3-1 in region competition. Cartersville (16-4, 5-1) steps outside Region 5-AAAA next week to host Lassiter Thursday at 5 p.m., followed by a home region game with Chapel Hill Friday at 5:55 p.m. and the Canes will host Maryville (TN) next Saturday at noon. WOODLAND 17, VILLA RICA 12 Woodland won a slugfest at Villa Rica Friday night 17-12 as the two teams combined for 29 runs and 24 hits. Five Woodland hitters finished with two hits each including Scotty Smith (photo) who hit a first inning grand slam and Koby Stansel who had a two-run double and drove in three runs in the game. Zach Wilson and Dallas Adams had two hits and two RBI each. Toby Queen had the other two-hit game for Woodland with one RBI. Peyton Posey drove in a run with a double. Fisher Davis added one hit and one RBI. Bailey Ward contributed two RBI. Aubrey Gaines and Mekhi Boykin combined for seven hits and five RBI for Villa Rica (6-12, 3-7). Posey (5 IP, 8R, 5ER, 10H, 3BB, 2K) started on the mound for Woodland and picked up the pitching win. Trent Porter (2 IP, 4R, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 2K) closed out the final two frames. Woodland (10-9, 6-6) steps out of region action next week and travels to Pensacola for the Adidas Beach Blast Tournament. PAULDING COUNTY 12, CASS 5 Cass out hit Paulding County Friday night, but also committed six errors on defense contributing to nine unearned runs in a 12-5 home region loss to the Patriots. The Colonels led 1-0 through two innings, but Paulding County scored 11 total runs in the next two innings to essentially put the game away with an 11-1 lead. Cass stayed in the contest with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the Patriots’ lead to 11-5, but would get no closer. Chandler Postlewait had four hits for Paulding with one RBI. Colin Hynek added a double and three RBI. Robbie Reeves hit a three-run home run in the Patriots’ fourth inning. Postlewait (4 IP, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 3K) went four innings in a start on the mound to earn the win. Parker Duffey (1 IP, 4ER, 6H) and Reeves (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K) also pitched for Paulding County. Jayden Smith (2.2 IP, 8R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 1K) took the mound loss for Cass although he did not allow an earned run. Cass (7-13, 3-7) has now lost eight straight, including six consecutive region games and will try to bounce back next Thursday at home in a non-region game with Darlington. RINGGOLD 15, ADAIRSVILLE 0 Class AAA seventh-ranked Ringgold sent 18 men to the plate and scored 15 runs in the bottom of the first inning Friday evening in a 15-0 Region 6-AAA win over visiting Adairsville in three innings. Sam Mills hit a grand slam and a three-run homer in the first inning as Ringgold pounded out nine hits in the frame to go with three walks, two hit batsmen, and an Adairsville error. Trace Still, Evan Henry, and Levi Blackwell each had singles for Adairsville. Ringgold improved to 16-4 overall and 8-0 in region play to stay atop the league standings. Adairsville (3-11, 2-6) travels to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Thursday and plays at Calhoun next Friday.

Nine runs by South Georgia State in the third inning Friday night was a severe enough blow to hold off visiting Georgia Highlands, 10-5. The Chargers led 2-0 early, but the big third inning game South Georgia State a 10-2 lead that proved to be insurmountable. Georgia Highlands added a single run in the sixth inning and two more in the eighth for the 10-5 final score. Both teams finished with seven hits. Parker Orr and Malik Spratling both hit solo home runs for the Chargers in the loss. Willis Kemp doubled and had one RBI. Alex Marquand (RBI), Skylar McPhee, Hunter Moody, and Bryson Horne had one hit apiece for Georgia Highlands. Brant Brown (2.1 IP, 7R, 6ER, 2BB, 3K) suffered the pitching loss. Dalton Rhadans (5.2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 3H, 0BB, 4K) completed the game on the mound for GHC after entering in the third inning. The Woodland girls and boys track and field teams swept their county rivals Thursday to win the 2019 Bartow County Track & Field Championships hosted by Cass at Cochran Stadium. The Woodland girls cruised to a dominating victory — 87 points ahead of second place Cartersville. The Adairsville girls were third with Cass fourth. The boys meet was much closer. The Cartersville High School soccer teams both suffered tough losses Thursday night at LaGrange in Region 5-AAAA action. The Lady Canes lost in overtime 3-2 and the Hurricanes lost on penalty kicks after overtime, 5-4. LAGRANGE 3, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2 (OT) The Lady Canes led at halftime 1-0 by virtue of a Micah Vance goal assisted by Abbey Craig, but the host Lady Grangers scored in the first thirty seconds of the second half to draw even at 1-1. The score remained tied through regulation and went to overtime. In the opening minute of the first overtime period, Kalyn Donegan gave Cartersville a 2-1 lead off an assist from Devondria Johnson. Twenty seconds later, LaGrange answered again and also scored the eventual game-winning goal approximately ninety seconds later. The Lady Grangers improved to 7-5 overall and 5-0 in Region 5-AAAA. LaGrange has one region game remaining. They host Sandy Creek on April 12. The Lady Canes (8-3-1, 5-1) have now completed their region slate and return to action after Spring Break with a game April 12 at Shaw in Columbus. LAGRANGE 5, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 4 (PKs) The Canes and Grangers battled to a 3-3 tie in regulation and were tied 4-4 after two, five-minute overtimes sending the game to penalty kicks for a conclusion. LaGrange, now 7-2-2 overall and 5-0 in Region 5-AAAA picked up the win on PKs. Cartersville (7-4, 5-1) has completed the region schedule. The Grangers still have one region contest remaining at home April 12 against Sandy Creek. The Canes will return to the pitch April 12 at Shaw in Columbus.

The Adairsville Tigers collected their second Region 6-AAA win of the season Thursday night with a 7-1 victory at Murray County. Adairsville took a 4-0 lead through three innings and led 7-1 in the fifth on their way to a six-run win. Three Tigers’ hurlers — Noah Nation, Levi Blackwell, and Braden Powell — combined on a one-hitter with Nation picking up the pitching win. Nation allowed one run on one hit and three walks with five strikeouts in four innings of work. Blackwell tossed two shutout innings and fanned one batter without allowing a hit or a walk, while Powell closed out the final frame without a baserunner in only eight pitches. The Tigers had eight hits in the win. Elijah Padgett had two hits and two RBI. Powell had a double and drove in one run. Landon Ayers also doubled. B.J. Roper, Evan Henry, Wade Conduff, and Blackwell (2 RBI) had the other Adairsville base hits. Murray County falls to 1-13 overall and 1-6 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (3-10, 2-5) travels to Ringgold Friday for a 5:55 p.m. first pitch.

The Adairsville boys soccer team lost a non-region road contest Thursday evening at Riverside Military Academy, 8-1. Gustavo Gollaz scored the only Tigers’ goal. Goalkeeper Tyrek Bryant had 14 saves. Adairsville (1-9) plays at Central-Carroll Friday, April 12.

The Adairsville and Woodland soccer teams squared off in non-region action Wednesday night in Tiger Valley with the Lady Tigers taking the girls contest 3-1 and the Wildcats winning the boys matchup, 3-0. The Woodland girls took a 1-0 lead in the game’s sixth minute on a breakaway goal by Molly Plott, but Adairsville responded to take a 2-1 lead at the break and added a second half goal to secure the win. Kaylee Jordan scored in the 11th minute off an assist from Cat Wheeler to tie the game 1-1, then Wheeler gave the Lady Tigers their halftime lead when she scored off an assist from Sadye Johnson in the 26th minute. Jordan added the second half insurance goal for Adairsville off a feed from Emma Collins in the 65th minute. Keeper Havyn Isaac made eight saves in net for Adairsville. The Adairsville girls improved to 9-2-1. Woodland slips to 2-10-1. Next for Woodland is a road match at Paulding County April 9. Adairsville returns to action April 11 at Trion. WOODLAND BOYS 3, ADAIRSVILLE 0 Woodland scored twice in the first half and added a third goal in the second half in the Wildcats’ non-region win Wednesday night at Adairsville. Luis Medina scored twice in the first half and Raul Gonzalez added the Wildcats' second half goal. The Tigers managed a dozen shots, but did not find the net. Adairsville keeper Tyrek Bryant was credited with 29 saves. Woodland improved to 6-4-2 with their win. The Wildcats return to the pitch after Spring Break with a region game at Paulding County April 9. Adairsville (1-8) travels to Riverside Military Academy for a 6 p.m. kickoff Thursday.

Troup County scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday evening to take a 4-1 lead over visiting Cartersville, then closed out the final frame with a double play to remain unbeaten in region action and hand the Canes their first region loss of the year. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning off Cartersville ace Mason Barnett. Back to back one-out singles and an infield miscue put Troup County baserunners at second and third base. Following a strikeout for the second out of the inning, a wild pitch allowed a run home for the first score of the game. The Hurricanes answered in the top of the sixth inning to knot the score at 1-1. Preston Welchel singled to right field and moved up to second base on a passed ball. Barnett followed with a ground ball that got passed the Tigers’ third baseman and Welchel scored on the error. In the fateful bottom of the sixth, Troup utilized a hit batsman, a walk, and a single to load the bases with no outs. Canes’ head coach Kyle Tucker lifted Barnett and inserted Gage Morris on the mound. Morris fanned the first batter he faced, but a passed ball during the next at-bat made the score 2-1 and a Colby Williams two-RBI single gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead. Morris struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Ian Inaba reached on a one-out single in the Canes’ seventh, but a ground ball double play retired the side. Both teams finished the contest with five hits. Colton Webb had two hits for Troup. Williams, Trace Meadows, and Cade Garner had the other Tigers’ base hits. Inaba had two of the Canes’ base hits. Welchel, Barnett, and Cohen Wilbanks had the other Cartersville safeties. Jackson Knox (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 5H, 0BB, 8K) went the distance to earn the pitching win for Troup County (6-11, 3-0 Region 5-AAAA). Barnett (5 IP, 4R, 3ER, 4H, 2BB, 6K) suffered the pitching loss for Cartersville with Morris (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K) closing out the sixth inning. Cartersville (15-4, 4-1) hosts the second game of the two-game region series with Troup Friday at 5:55 p.m. at Richard Bell Field.

Trailing 2-0 going to the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday night at home, Woodland scored three times to take a 3-2 lead but Villa Rica regained the lead in the next frame and held on for a 4-3 Region 7-AAAAA win at The Ballpark at Woodland. Villa Rica led 1-0 after two innings and the score stayed that way until the visitors went up 2-0 in the top of the sixth. Johnny Bravy (7 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 8K) went the distance for Villa Rica to earn the pitching win. Bailey Ward (6.2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 7H, 3BB, 3K) suffered the pitching loss for Woodland. Peyton Posey (0.1 IP, 1H) retired the final out in the seventh inning. Mekhi Boykin and Keaton Taylor combined for four hits and four RBI to pace the Villa Rica offense. Scotty Smith hit a solo home run for Woodland’s go-ahead run in the sixth inning. The two other Woodland runs scored without benefit of a hit with Marco Haro and Koby Stansell scoring on a catcher throwing error. Haro had reached as a hit batsman and Stansell reached safely on a fielder’s choice. Haro and Stansell both had hits earlier in the contest and Posey added the other hit for the locals. Villa Rica improved to 6-10 overall and 3-5 in region play. Woodland (8-10, 5-6) travels to Villa Rica Friday at 5:55 p.m. to complete the two game region series.

Two Paulding County pitchers combined to shutout visiting Cass Wednesday night in Dallas, 4-0. Patriots’ starter Joshua Hunton (5 IP, 0R, 4H, 2BB, 6K) and reliever Jordan Brawner (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 3K) scattered five Cass hits and two walks while combining for nine strikeouts. Logan Nelson (3 IP, 4R, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 2K) started on the mound for Cass and took the loss. Jayden Smith (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K) worked the final three frames for the Colonels. Cleve Jordan had two hits and one RBI for Paulding County. Chandler Postelwait drove in a run with a double. Dakota Reeves had the only other Patriots base hit. Matt Shook and Nelson had two hits apiece for the Colonels. Smith had the other base hit. Cass (7-11, 3-6 Region 7-AAAAA) will host Paulding County (4-13, 3-8) Friday at 5:55 p.m.
