The Adairsville, Cartersville, and Cass boys basketball teams all picked up region wins Friday night. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 53, LAKEVIEW-FO 44 Adairsville held on for a nine-point Region 6-AAA victory Friday night at home as the Tigers celebrated their 2018-19 seniors. Adairsville built a 28-15 lead by halftime, but visiting Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe stormed back into the game in the third quarter to only trail by three points entering the final eight minutes. The Tigers then outscored the Warriors 16-10 in the fourth quarter for a 53-44 win. Four Tigers finished with double figure scoring. Gaven Crunkelton had 14 points. Mason Boswell finished with 13. Danarous Johnson and Malachi Gardner posted 10 points each. Savaun Henderson, Diego Perez, and Jaxon Welchel rounded out the scoring with two points apiece. Ruddy Ware led LFO (11-11, 7-7) with 23 points. Adairsville (8-15, 6-8) wraps up the regular season on the road next week at Haralson County Tuesday and at Murray County next Friday. CASS BOYS 70, VILLA RICA 51 The Colonels outscored visiting Villa Rica 17-5 in the second quarter Friday night to take a 32-20 lead at halftime on their way to a 19-point Region 7-AAAAA win. Jacquez Fountain led Cass with 21 points. He was followed by Ethan Carter with 10. Zaylan Chaney scored nine. Braxton Benham and Jaylon Johnson contributed eight apiece while Justice Hayes added seven. Xavion Sparks led Villa Rica with 13 points. The Wildcats slipped to 9-12 overall and 4-9 in region action. Cass (13-11, 8-7) will wrap up the regular season Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Hiram. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 74, LAGRANGE 70 The Canes continued their stronghold on second place in Region 5-AAAA Friday night with a 74-70 win at LaGrange. Cartersville led 19-14 after one quarter and built a 36-21 lead by halftime, but the host Grangers narrowed the lead to six points at 52-46 heading into a tightly contested fourth quarter. Perignon Dyer led the Hurricanes with 30 points. Kolbe Benham followed with 18. Amarai Orr knocked down eight points. Isaac Gridley contributed seven. Micah Tart had six points and Marquail Coaxum added three. Vondez Taylor paced LaGrange (11-11, 3-6) with 18 points. Cartersville (12-10, 6-3) plays at region-leading Sandy Creek Saturday at 4:30 p.m. HIRAM 60, WOODLAND BOYS 44 Javyen Brown paced Hiram with 21 points while Arshad Crepsac and Nate Presnell added 12 each as the Hornets topped visiting Woodland Friday night, 60-44. Hiram (8-15, 3-11) held leads of 15-12 after one quarter, 30-19 at halftime, and 44-29 after three quarters. Hunter Johnson and Jaylen Ballard paced Woodland with 16 and 14 points, respectively. The Cass girls and boys basketball teams celebrated their 2018-19 senior players Tuesday night in front of the home crowd and both home teams collected Region 7-AAAAA victories over county-rival Woodland. CASS GIRLS 52, WOODLAND 27 The Lady Colonels snapped a two-game skid, celebrated their 2019 seniors, and eased past county rival Woodland Tuesday night at home with a 52-27 victory. The Cass girls started slowly and Woodland slowed the tempo even more as the first quarter ended with the Lady Colonels up 4-2. Extended pressure and an 18-point run in the second quarter by Cass pushed the lead to 23-9 by halftime. Cass led 37-19 after three quarters. Lady Colonels’ freshman Claire Davis had a game-high 14 points. Senior Payton Stoddard (photo) followed with 11 that were all scored in the second half. Londaisha Smith had eight points. Amber Brittian finished with four. Sharia Wade, Ariana Hames, Taryn Callahan, Brianna Stephenson, and Alexis Ware contributed three points each. Madgie Robinson led the Lady Cats with 12 points. Abigail Taylor scored four. Ansley Evans had three points and four other players added two points each. Woodland (1-19, 1-12 Region 7-AAAAA) hosts Hiram Friday night for their senior night. Cass (18-4, 10-4) entertains Class AAAAA top-ranked and unbeaten Villa Rica Friday night at 6 p.m. and will host Class AAAAAA Chattahoochee at 3 p.m. Saturday. CASS BOYS 64, WOODLAND 46 Senior Jacquez Fountain (photo) scored a game-high 33 points as the Colonels cruised past visiting Woodland Tuesday night, 64-46, moved over the .500 mark, and celebrated their 2018-19 senior night. The Colonels raced to a 20-4 advantage in the first eight minutes, led 34-18 by halftime, and held a 53-29 lead after three quarters on their way to an 18-point win. No other Cass player reached double figures, but seven more Colonels scored. Ethan Carter finished with seven. Andrew Glaze and Braxton Benham totaled six. Justice Hayes posted five. Zay Jackson had three points while Jaquan Heard and Zaylan Chaney added two points each. Dawson Wilkins and Hunter Johnson finished with 16 each for the Wildcats. Jaylan Ballard added 10 and D.J. Robinson contributed four. The loss drops Woodland to 4-17 on the year and 1-12 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Wildcats host their senior night this Friday when Hiram visits. Cass (12-11, 7-7) has Villa Rica at home Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and closes out the regular season next Tuesday on the road at Hiram.

The Cartersville boys moved into second place in Region 5-AAAA Tuesday night with a road win at Central-Carroll, but the Cartersville girls, Adairsville girls and boys, and the Excel Christian Academy boys all dropped region contests. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 79, CENTRAL-CARROLL 63 The Hurricanes stormed to an early lead Tuesday night at Central-Carroll and never trailed in a 79-63 Region 5-AAAA win. The win also moved Cartersville into sole possession of second place in the region standings with four games remaining in the 2018-19 regular season. Cartersville took a 16-7 lead after one quarter Tuesday and led 41-25 at halftime before pushing their advantage to 59-39 heading into the fourth quarter. Perignon Dyer scored 18 points to lead the Canes. Austin Cauffman (photo) and Amarai Orr also reached double figures with 12 and 11 points. Isaac Gridley scored nine for Cartersville. CENTRAL-CARROLL 43, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 28 The Lady Canes struggled to score in the first quarter Tuesday night at Central-Carroll and never recovered in a 43-28 Region 5-AAAA loss to the Lady Lions. Central led 14-2 after one quarter, 27-10 at halftime, and 39-21 after three quarters on their way to a 15-point win. Nyah Houston led all scorers in the game with 23 for the Lions. Janae Jackson had 12 points. A’mya Davis (photo) scored all seven of her points in the second half to lead Cartersville. Lehla Thomas added six for the Lady Canes. Central-Carroll improved to 14-5 on the season and evened its region record at 4-4. Cartersville (10-10, 2-6) travels to LaGrange Friday for a 6 p.m. tip and will host region-leading and 10th-ranked Sandy Creek Saturday at 3 p.m. CALHOUN 69, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 58 The Adairsville boys fell behind early and trailed by 14 at halftime before a furious third quarter rally put the Tigers up by one going into the final period. Unfortunately for Adairsville, they were outscored 24-12 over the final eight minutes in a 69-58 Region 6-AAA loss at Calhoun. Calhoun had leads of 16-6 after one quarter and the Yellow Jackets were ahead 35-21 at the intermission. Adairsville led 46-45 after three quarters. Gage Maffetone and Davis Allen led Calhoun with 21 and 19 points, respectively. Mason Boswell paced Adairsville with 21 points. Gaven Crunkelton knocked down 12 points. Malachi Gardner (photo) had eight. Denarous Johnson finished with six, while Connor Crunkelton and Savaun Henderson added five points each. Calhoun moved to 12-8 on the season and is now 9-4 in region play. Adairsville (7-15, 5-8) hosts Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday night. CALHOUN 54, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 52 The Adairsville girls dropped a heartbreaker Tuesday night at Calhoun after battling their rivals in Region 6-AAA to the very end. Calhoun led 14-7 after one quarter and 20-19 at halftime before extending their lead to 38-33 by the end of the third quarter. The Lady Tigers stayed close throughout, however, before falling 54-52. Lyndi Dae Davis led Calhoun with 15 points. Emily Sorrow and Ashlyn Brzozaski scored nine and eight points for the Jackets. The Trojans improved to 11-9 for the season with their win. Gordon Lee is 6-4 in Region 6-A. Rayshawn Womack paced the host Eagles with 16 points. We may be experiencing some colder temperatures, but our college and pro Athletes Beyond Bartow are continuing to contribute some "hot" performances in January. Basketball continues to dominate the season but the winter sports of wrestling and swimming are also in mid-season this time of year. Even a handful of local athletes have started their spring sports campaigns with track meets and tennis. That means college softball along with college and professional baseball are not far behind and -- as always -- we will keep you updated on the progress of our locals. TRACK AND FIELD SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Sr., Kingston, GA, Darlington HS)… won the men’s 3,000 meter run Sunday in 8:40.99 at the season-opening Emory Crossplex Invitational in Birmingham. Fields finished 1.62 seconds ahead of Lee University’s Ben Tabor in a field of 40 runners. The Lynx finished 7th of 31 teams. Rhodes competes again this Friday at the Arkansas State Invitational in Jonesboro, Arkansas. ANNA HIGHTOWER — Georgia Tech (Sr., Cartersville HS)… the Jackets’ pole vaulter tied for 10th Saturday in a field of 31 competitors at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville with a vault of 3.69m or 12 feet, 1.25 inches. Next for Georgia Tech is a trip to Clemson for the Bob Pollock Invitational. SWIMMING JORDAN BALDWIN — Life University (Fr., Woodland HS)… swam the third leg of Life’s 400 yard freestyle relay B-team that finished seventh and was 12th in the 100 yard breaststroke Saturday at the University of the Cumberlands Triple Dual with U of C, Lees-McRae College, and Bethel University. Life lost to LMC but defeated Bethel. Baldwin also competed in the 100 yard backstroke, but was disqualified. Next for Life is the Mid-South Conference Championships January 30-February 1 in Georgetown, KY. KATIE LAWHORN — Life University (So., Adairsville HS)… placed 13th in the 50 yard freestyle Saturday (30.38) as the Runnin’ Eagles competed at the University of the Cumberlands with the hosts, Bethel University, and Lees-McRae College. DAWSON McCLURE — Life University (Fr., Woodland HS)… finished fifth in the 50 yard freestyle (23.76), eighth (1:07.16) in the 100 yard breaststroke, and was a member of Life’s seventh place 400-yard freestyle relay B-team Saturday at the University of the Cumberlands Triple Duals. WRESTLING JAKE HUFFINE — Chattanooga (Jr., 133-lb. wt. class, Woodland HS)… won by major decision Sunday over Hunter Starner (10-0) as the Mocs defeated VMI 32-8 in a Southern Conference home match. Chattanooga will host Davidson next Sunday afternoon. PRO BASKETBALL A.J. MOSBY — Northern Arizona Suns (1st yr. pro; NBA G-League; G; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS)… scored two points in three minutes of playing time Tuesday during a 106-92 win at the Canton Charge. It was his first playing time since scoring three points with a rebound and one assist on January 6 in a home 113-105 loss to Sioux Falls. Mosby has made seven appearances and is averaging three points and one rebound. The Suns (6-24) have a home game Tuesday against the Salt Lake City Stars before traveling Friday and Saturday to the Texas Legends and the Oklahoma City Blue. ELIJAH ROBINSON — Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; Argentine League; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)… scored 20 points, collected four rebounds, and had one assist in his team’s 93-80 home loss Saturday to division-leading Hindu Club. Villa San Martin (10-7) is tied for second place in the Northern Conference’s North Division. They play at Santiago Del Estero Independiente Wednesday and host Obera Tennis Club Saturday. COLLEGE BASKETBALL MARK CHESTER — Georgia Northwestern Tech (Fr., G, Cass HS)… had nine points and eight rebounds in an 81-67 loss Friday night at Emory-Oxford College. The Bobcats (3-10) host Campbellsville University-Somerset Tuesday night in Rossville and will play in the Welch College Flames Classic Friday and Saturday in Gallatin, Tennessee. RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… Davis played all 40 minutes, scored 21 points, collected nine rebounds and doled out three assists in a 93-83 Peach Belt Conference win Wednesday night at Lander University. He then scored 16 points with nine boards, two steals, and three assists in a 72-69 win Saturday over Georgia Southwestern. FMU (11-2, 7-1) hosts Columbus State Monday afternoon and Augusta Wednesday night before traveling to Flagler College Saturday. All three games are against conference foes. ASHTON HAGANS — University of Kentucky (Fr., G, Cartersville native; Newton HS)… scored a career-high 23 points last Tuesday in the Wildcats’ 69-49 blowout win at Georgia. He added five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Saturday, Hagans finished with six points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals in an 82-80 win at Auburn. Kentucky (14-3, 4-1 SEC) hosts Mississippi State Tuesday night and Kansas Saturday night as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. WHITNEY HARRIS — Toccoa Falls College (Fr., G, Woodland HS)… failed to score, but had two rebounds and two assists Saturday in a 72-37 loss to Johnson University. She also scored three points and had one assist Thursday in an 86-40 loss at Webber International (FL). Toccoa Falls College (1-14) plays at Bob Jones University (SC) Tuesday, at Pensacola Christian (FL) Friday, and at Trinity Baptist College (FL) Saturday. KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State (So., G, Cartersville HS)… averaged 13 minutes of playing time and totaled three points, two rebounds, and one assist as the Knights split games at Florida College and Brewton Parker. McClinic has appeared in 14 games this season. MGSU (6-10, 2-7 Southern States Athletic Conference) hits the road for three conference games this week. JANA MORNING — Berry College (So., G, Cass HS)… scored a career high 30 points Friday night in a 69-64 win at Hendrix College (AR). Morning nailed seven three-pointers, grabbed two rebounds, and added one steal in the Southern Athletic Association victory. She scored 10 points with seven rebounds, two assists, and four steals as Berry beat Centre College (KY) last Tuesday and scored 18 points with eight rebounds Sunday in another Southern Athletic Association win at Rhodes College, 81-70. Berry (7-11, 3-4) hosts Hendrix and Rhodes this Friday and Sunday. JONATHAN PRITCHETT — Vermont Tech CC (So., G, Woodland HS)… came off the bench and averaged over 24 minutes per game in three wins this past week as the Knights extended their six-game win streak. Tuesday, Pritchett scored 10 points with six assists, four rebounds, and two steals as the Knights defeated Maine-Machias CC 88-79. Friday, he scored eight points and had eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals in a 95-59 blowout of Central Maine CC. Saturday, he scored three points with three rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block as the Knights beat Maine-Augusta 87-71. Vermont Tech (15-6, 8-2 Yankee Small College Conference) plays all three games on the road this week traveling to New Hampshire Tech Tuesday, at Maine-Machias Saturday, and at Unity CC Sunday. JOSIE SUMMERVILLE — North Park University (Fr., F, Adairsville HS)… in a start Saturday at Wheaton College (IL), Summerville played 24 minutes, scored two points, and grabbed seven rebounds during a 62-57 loss. DARIUS THROWER — Truett McConnell University (Jr., G, Excel Christian Academy)… scored five points and had one rebound in 12 minutes of playing time Saturday during a Bears’ 103-57 win over visiting Regent University (VA). TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Sr., Cartersville, GA, Laurel Springs Academy)… won her singles and doubles matches Monday as the Cardinals blanked visiting University of Dayton 7-0. Gollhofer defeated Natalie Allen of Dayton 6-3, 6-0 at Line 4 singles and paired with Isabelle Dohanics at Line 3 doubles to win 6-3 over Mary Brascia/Emily Zargham. All five local high school boys basketball teams were in action Saturday with Cartersville and Cass coming away with important region victories. The Canes avenged an earlier loss at Cedartown with a 61-47 home win over the Bulldogs while Cass secured an eight-point region road win at Villa Rica. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 61, CEDARTOWN 47 The Hurricanes moved above the .500 mark Saturday night and into a tie for second place in Region 5-AAAA with a 61-47 home win over Cedartown. The Cartersville win also evened the season series with the Bulldogs who beat Cartersville 62-54 back on January 4. Saturday, Cedartown led 10-7 after one quarter and 22-20 at halftime before the Canes used an 18-10 advantage in the third quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish. Perignon Dyer and Isaac Gridley led the Hurricanes with 24 and 14 points, respectively. Kolbe Benham scored nine points. Amarai Orr (photo) contributed six. Marquail Coaxum had five points and Robert Novak added one. Gridley pulled down 11 rebounds. Orr grabbed 10 boards. Jayden Johnson led the Bulldogs (8-12, 2-6) in scoring with 14 points. They play at Central-Carroll Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m., at LaGrange Friday at 7:30 p.m., and will host Sandy Creek Saturday at 4:30 p.m. CASS BOYS 58, VILLA RICA 50 After dropping a tough decision to visiting Carrollton Friday night at home, the Colonels went on the road Saturday and picked up a crucial Region 7-AAAAA win by holding off Villa Rica, 58-50. “That was a big region win,” said Cass head coach Sean Glaze. “It was a terrific bounce back for us following that Carrollton game.” The Colonels trailed early with Villa Rica taking a 13-10 lead after one quarter. Cass then outscored the Wildcats 12-6 in the second quarter to take a 22-19 halftime lead. The Colonels led 36-29 after three quarters and held on for an eight-point win. PAULDING COUNTY 64, WOODLAND BOYS 60 The Woodland boys went into the fourth quarter tied with visiting Paulding County Saturday night, but finished just short in a 64-60 Region 7-AAAAA loss. Paulding led 12-8 after one quarter and held a 37-26 lead at halftime before the Wildcats caught them at 46-all after three periods. Kevin Brown and Jervon Morris led Paulding County with 18 and 14 points, respectively. Hunter Johnson paced Woodland with a game-high 22 points and Dawson Wilkins followed with 17. Jaylen Ballard scored seven. D.J. Robinson and Justice Carter tossed in six points each while DiAnthony Heathcock added two. The Patriots improved to 18-3 overall and 9-3 in region play. Paulding maintains third place in league play. Woodland (4-16, 1-11) plays at Cass Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and entertains Hiram Friday night. SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 61, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 54 The host Raiders took a 15-9 lead after one quarter and led 35-18 at halftime on their way to a 61-54 non-region win over Adairsville Saturday in Dalton. Southeast Whitfield improved their season record to 10-11 with the win. Adairsville (7-14, 5-7 Region 6-AAA) returns to region action Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Calhoun. The Tigers are scheduled to host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday night at 7 p.m.

All four local high school girls basketball teams were in action Saturday, but all four suffered losses. CEDARTOWN 46, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 45 The Lady Canes had their chances Saturday evening, but fell a point short to visiting Cedartown 46-45 in a Region 5-AAAA game at The Storm Center. “We played a great second half,” said Cartersville coach Cindy Moore. “We had two different chances at the free throw line in the final 15 seconds, but did not convert. Cedartown hit a shot at the buzzer for the win.” Cartersville led 16-13 after one quarter, but trailed 29-22 at halftime. The Lady Canes tied the game in the third quarter and the back-and-forth battle continued until the final shot. Qiana Watson led Cedartown (12-5, 5-2) with 15 points. Keke Turner and Tamera Beeman both finished with 10 points. A’mya Davis was top scorer for the Lady Canes. Haley Johnson followed with 11 points. Lehla Thomas had nine. The host Lady Raiders built a 34-18 lead through three quarters on their way to a 14-point win. McKenna Lentych led Southeast Whitfield (6-15) with 20 points. Breeana Wilson scored 16 for the Lady Tigers and Nakiyah Washington added seven. Rajah Drummond paced Paulding (3-17, 2-10) with 14 points. Destine Lovejoy and Faith Lovejoy each contributed 12. Madgie Robinson led Woodland with 10 points. Ansley Evans had seven. VILLA RICA 71, CASS GIRLS 47 The Class 5A top-ranked Villa Rica girls overpowered visiting Cass Saturday 71-47. With their win, the Lady Wildcats improved to 20-0 on the season and are 11-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (17-4, 9-4) hosts county-rival Woodland Tuesday night at 6 p.m. and will rematch with Villa Rica Friday night at 6 p.m. at home.

The Cartersville High School swim team won the 2018-19 Bartow County Championship Meet Saturday at the Adairsville High School swim center by finishing almost 200 points ahead of second place Adairsville. The Hurricanes finished with 322 combined team points, Adairsville had 224, Cass was third with 158, and Woodland was fourth with 90 points. Cartersville took both gender titles as well. The Cartersville girls led the way with 173 points. Adairsville was second in girls’ events at 156. The Woodland girls were third with 66 points and the Cass girls totaled 54. On the boys side, Cartersville finished with 149 points. Cass was second at 104 with Adairsville and Woodland rounding out the field with 68 and 24 points, respectively. The Woodland High School wrestling team won the 2018-19 Class 5A Team State Duals Saturday with a 36-30 victory over Buford in the championship match. The victory completed a four-match sweep for the top-seeded Wildcats who had wins over Arabia Mountain (82-0), Ware County (70-6), and Veterans (45-15) to reach the title match. For Woodland, it is a fourth state wrestling team title to go with numerous individual state champions over the life of the program. The Wildcats won the State Traditional team championship in 2003 in Class 4A and now has three State Team Duals titles. Woodland won the State Duals in Class 4A in 2003 and 2011. Cass wrestling settled for a tie for 5th place finish. The Colonels lost a narrow 35-31 decision Saturday morning to Ola in the consolation semifinals. Ola went on the finish in third place with a 38-30 win over Veterans in the consolation finals. The Colonels won their first two matches of the state tournament Thursday, defeating SW DeKalb 49-28 and Locust Grove 31-27, but lost in the championship bracket semifinals Friday to Buford 50-24. Cartersville finished 2-2 in the Class 4A state tournament. The Canes had an opening round win Thursday over Columbus 42-31, but lost to Woodward Academy in the second round 56-18. Friday Cartersville won its first match in the consolation bracket over Cairo 59-24, but was eliminated Friday night with a 43-27 loss to Blessed Trinity. The Cartersville and Adairsville boys basketball teams earned key region wins Friday night as all nine local high school teams were in action with region games. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 88, TROUP 76 The Cartersville boys evened their Region 5-AAAA record Friday night at The Storm Center with an important 88-76 win over visiting Troup County. The Canes led at each quarter stop on a hot-shooting night. Cartersville led 22-20 after one quarter, 37-30 at halftime, and 55-53 after three quarters before separating late for a 12-point win. Kolbe Benham and Perignon Dyer combined to knock down eleven three-pointers for the Hurricanes. Benham finished with 26 points and Dyer had 22. Amarai Orr tossed in 16 points and Isaac Gridley added 14 as the Canes had four players in double figures. JaQuavo McFarland led Troup with 26 points, including eight three-pointers. The Tigers slipped to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in region action. Savannah Levett led Carrollton with 14 points. De’Mauri Flournoy and Kehinde Obasuyi followed with 13 and 11, respectively, for the Trojans. Cass led 9-6 after one quarter, 26-23 at halftime, and 37-28 at the end of the third quarter before being outscored 22-10 over the final eight minutes. The Woodland wrestling team continued an impressive run through the State Team Duals Championship Friday night and reached Saturday’s title match with a 45-15 win over Veterans. The top-seeded Wildcats have won easily in each of their three matches prior to the finals, defeating Arabia Mountain 82-0, Ware County 70-6, and Veterans by 30 points.
