It was a big week again for local college quarterbacks and Vic Beasley scored his second NFL defensive touchdown. Former Cartersville High School Hurricane Trevor Lawrence picked up Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year honors and helped guide his Clemson Tigers to a 42-10 rout of Pittsburgh in the ACC Championship Game. In the Mid-American Conference Championship Game, former Adairsville High School quarterback Marcus Childers led a huge comeback victory as Northern Illinois rallied for a 30-29 win over Buffalo to reach the Boca Raton Bowl later this month. Meanwhile in the NFL, Adairsville native Beasley scored his second NFL career touchdown Sunday with a 74-yard fumble return for touchdown. His Atlanta Falcons, however, lost to the visiting Baltimore Ravens to slip to 4-8 on the season. PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL A.J. Mosby (Northern Arizona Suns, NBA G-League; Cartersville) — Mosby saw action in one game for the Suns this past week, playing 21 minutes in a 127-106 loss to the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Friday. In the defeat, Mosby had six points, hitting 2 of 4 3-point shots, while adding a rebound and a steal. He didn't see any action in Northern Arizona's other two games. Elijah Robinson (Club Atletico Villa San Martin, Argentine League; Excel Christian) — Robinson was a steady rebounding presence across Villa San Martin's three games this past week, although his scoring efficiency fluctuated. He pulled down six rebounds apiece in two losses and a win. Robinson scored 12 points in a defeat to Hindu Club de Resistencia Chaco last Tuesday; he bounced back with 19 points and three assists in a victory over Independiente de Santiago Del Estero Friday; and he put up just six points in a loss to Olimpico Ceres Sunday. COLLEGE BASKETBALL Mark Chester (Georgia Northwestern Tech CC Fr., Cass) — Chester totaled seven points as the Bobcats split their two most recent games — a 79-67 loss to Welch College and a 68-64 triumph over Southern States CC. Ryan Davis (Francis Marion Sr., Cartersville) — Davis posted 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in an 82-79 win over North Georgia on Saturday. Whitney Harris (Toccoa Falls Fr., Woodland) — Harris had just four points in a loss to Brevard College but erupted for 16 on 5-of-11 shooting from deep in a defeat against Warren Wilson College this past week. In the loss to Brevard, she added two each of rebounds, assists and steals. Against Warren Wilson, Harris had two rebounds and a steal. Kimora McClinic (Middle Georgia State So., Cartersville) — McClinic finished with four points, a rebound and a steal in seven minutes of action in a 65-59 victory against Blue Mountain (Mississippi) on Thursday. Jana Morning (Berry College So., Cass) — Morning contributed two points, two assists and a steal in a 68-62 loss to Emory on Friday. Jonathan Pritchett (Vermont Tech CC So., Woodland) — Pritchett struggled shooting the ball during the Knights' three games this past week, finishing with just one total point, but he made up for it with 17 total assists and eight total rebounds. Vermont Tech went 1-2 in the span. Jaylon Pugh (Furman Fr., Cartersville) — Pugh didn't see the floor in a 90-88 double-overtime win over Western Carolina in Furman's Southern Conference opener Saturday. Thanks to their 8-0 start, the Paladins landed in the AP Top 25 — at No. 25 — for the first time in school history. Josie Summerville (North Park Fr., Adairsville) — Summerville went scoreless with five rebounds in her first collegiate start Wednesday in a win over Aurora. She had four points and five rebounds Saturday in a loss to Wheaton (Illinois). Darius Thrower (Truett McConnell Jr., Excel Christian) — Thrower played 18 scoreless minutes across two games this past week. The Bears fell to Milligan (Tennessee) Wednesday, but they bounced back to beat Morris (South Carolina) on Saturday with Thrower chipping in three assists in the 92-90 win. PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL Vic Beasley Jr. (Atlanta Falcons; Adairsville) — Beasley scored his second career touchdown on a 74-yard fumble return in Sunday's game against Baltimore. The touchdown gave Atlanta a 10-7 lead in an eventual 26-16 loss. Beasley added two tackles in the defeat. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Marcus Childers (Northern Illinois R-So., Adairsville) — Childers pulled off a comeback for the ages to lead the Huskies to the MAC title on Friday. Trailing 29-10 late in the third quarter, Childers threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Brown. A few minutes later, he tossed a 32-yard score to Spencer Tears to pull NIU within 29-24. He completed with the rally with a 35-yarder to Brown to give the Huskies a 30-29 lead with 1:09 to go. In the victory, Childers went 21-for-33 with exactly 300 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, while adding a team-leading 58 yards on the ground. NIU will face UAB in the Boca Raton (Florida) Bowl at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18. Kurtis Feanny (Lenioir-Rhyne Fr., Woodland) — Feanny participated in the Division-II national quarterfinal against No. 3 Valdosta State, but Lenoir-Rhyne saw its season come to a close with a 61-21 defeat. Jordan Ferguson (Middle Tennessee State So., Cartersville) — Ferguson recorded two tackles (one solo) in a 27-25 loss to UAB in the Conference USA Championship Game Saturday. Up next for MTSU is the New Orleans Bowl against Appalachian State at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. Miller Forristall (Alabama R-So., Cartersville) — Forristall saw action as No. 1-ranked Alabama rallied to beat Georgia, 35-28, Saturday in the SEC Championship Game. Gabriel Gridley (Angelo State Jr., Cartersville) — Gridley punted six times for an average of 39 yards in ASU's 41-34 defeat to Central Oklahoma in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl on Saturday. Gridley had two punts inside the 20-yard line and boomed a long of 54 yards. Trevor Lawrence (Clemson Fr., Cartersville) — The recently named ACC Rookie of the Year, Lawrence helped guide Clemson to its fourth consecutive ACC title in a 42-10 rout of Pitt on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lawrence didn't set the world ablaze, completing 12 of 24 pass attempts for 118 yards. However, his two touchdown passes — 5- and 10-yarders to Tee Higgins — were key, as both came in the last five minutes of the first half to turn a 14-10 edge into a comfortable 28-10 advantage. WRESTLING Jake Huffine (Chattanooga Jr., Woodland) — Huffine placed second in the Cougar Clash Sunday in Edwardsville, Illinois. He won his opening match by fall, and then earned a 6-4 decision to advance to the title match. The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department’s U10 girls soccer team won the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) state championship Saturday afternoon at the Nix Complex Causby Field in Dalton. To reach the state championship game, Bartow U10 defeated District 7 runner-up Jackson County, 5-2, Friday night and Wayne County 6-0 Saturday morning. Bartow County reached the state tournament as GRPA District 5 champions. In the state title match, Bartow narrowly edged District 1 champion Columbia County 7-6 in a thriller. In the win over Jackson County, Ella Edwards scored four goals and Emma Edwards added a goal. Ella Edwards posted two goals in the 6-0 win over Wayne County. Carly Edwards, Emma Edwards, Kiley McMichael, and Zoe Bailey each added a score. In the championship match, Ella Edwards scored three times and Carly Edwards scored twice. Kiley McMichael and Bailey DeBoard both added a goal. She is a dedicated athlete and has the determination to excel according to her coaches. She is constantly encouraging her teammates and always has a positive attitude. Brittian also excels in the classroom where she has maintained a 4.0 grade point average. She is the daughter of Ted and Ollie Brittian. A’mya Davis is the Cartersville High School November Elite Athlete of the Month. A senior on the Lady Canes’ basketball team, Davis is a three-year starter at point guard. The daughter of Caretta Fezzia and Tyrone Davis, A’mya is averaging over nine points per game as Cartersville has started the season, 3-0. “Mya is a great role model,” said Lady Canes’ head coach Cindy Moore. “She works hard every day and encourages her teammates to bring their best. She is a vocal leader and pushes our entire team toward improvement every day.” Davis is a Gate Key Scholar and plans to go into nursing or some aspect of the medical field after high school graduation. Caleb Henson is the Woodland High School November Elite Athlete of the Month. The son of Dave and Tai Henson, Caleb is a freshman on the Wildcats’ wrestling team. Henson recently placed sixth at the Super 32 Tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina and became the first freshman to receive All-American recognition at this prestigious event. The Woodland wrestling season is in its early stages, but Henson remains undefeated in the 126-pound weight class. The November Elite Athlete of the Month for Excel Christian Academy is Kalil Holley. A sophomore, combo-guard on the Eagles’ basketball team, Holley posted 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists as ECA won its season opener. “Kalil has worked so hard this summer to improe his conditioning and his game,” said Excel boys coach and athletic director Shannon Boatfield. “The results speak for themselves. He has grown into one of the key cogs in our team.” Holley is the son of Sebastian and Sincerely Holley. Adairsville High School’s November Elite Athlete of the Month is Coriana McDaniel. The daughter of Dana and Corey McDaniel, she is a senior guard for the Lady Tigers’ basketball team. McDaniel earned Northwest Georgia Tip-Off Club athlete of the month last year for Adarisville as a junior and this season has been one of the Lady Tigers’ true leaders. She has averaged better than eight points per game and is recognized for her leadership by example. “Coriana is a good, character kid who never complains,” said Adairsville girls’ basketball head coach Michael Roberson. “She accepts constructive criticism from her coaches and tries to make those changes. Her work ethic is excellent and she pushes herself daily at practices.” McDaniel has earned her pharmacy tech certificate and sports medicine certificate while attending the Bartow County College and Career Academy. The third annual LakePoint Basketball Showcase will take place Saturday, December 15 at the LakePoint Champions Center in Emerson and will feature a trio of high school boys games. The Showcase, presented by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, will tip off at 3 p.m. with North Cobb Christian playing Dacula. McCallie School (TN) will face Kennesaw Mountain in a 4:30 p.m. pairing, and Holy Innocents will take on Starrs Mill in the 6 p.m. nightcap. The baseball showcase organization, Perfect Game Inc., is leaving the LakePoint Sporting Community project in Bartow County. A showcase organization for many future college and pro baseball players and a regional draw for Bartow County’s LakePoint Sporting Community, has decided to move elsewhere for its tournaments. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based scouting service plans to secure new baseball facilities in Georgia, according to a news release. It’s part of a larger national expansion. Perfect Game will move its tournaments from LakePoint starting in 2020. The decision comes as investors behind the massive project work to regain its financial footing. In June, eight groups affiliated with the development filed a Chapter 11 reorganization plan in federal bankruptcy court in Atlanta. The restructuring was created with the project’s main investor, California-based hedge fund manager Rimrock Capital. The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department 12U all-star football team defeated the Savannah Hurricanes 12-6 Sunday afternoon to win a second straight Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) Class A 12U state championship. The state playoffs were held Saturday and Sunday at Felker Park in Walton County. Cartersville defeated Walton County West 42-0 Saturday afternoon to earn a spot in the finals. Savannah beat Walton County Central 36-0 in their semifinal game. In Sunday’s victory, Khristian Lando rushed for 170 total yards and two touchdowns to provide much of the Cartersville offense. Stephen Rowser rushed for 55 yards including a trio of important third down conversions throughout the day. Receivers Brayden Pope and Asa Shepard both hauled in key receptions from quarterback Brelace Williams during the game. The Cartersville defense was led by Isaiah Livsey who forced one of the Savannah fumbles and finished with 14 total tackles. Although Cartersville allowed a touchdown on Savannah’s first play of the game, the defense rallied to keep them off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. In all, the Cartersville defense forced five fumbles that resulted in three turnovers. Trevor Harris added an interception for the locals. Logan Shrewsbury was credited with making multiple key defensive plays, and Lando finished with nine tackles and a fumble recovery for Cartersville. The Cartersville special teams were also credited with a shining effort throughout the title game. The host Walton County 8U all-stars blanked Cartersville 25-0. Cooper Melvin had 30 rushing yards for Cartersville in the loss, while Brody Jones and Drake Bailey also contributed. Melvin and Jones both finished with eight tackles to help lead the Cartersville defense. Walton County Central will face the Savannah Pit Bulls for the state championship Sunday afternoon. Savannah blanked Walton County West, 54-0, in the other Saturday semifinal. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 61, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 55 The Lady Tigers, keyed by a strong second half defensive effort, rallied Saturday afternoon to beat visiting Southeast Whitfield 61-55 in a non-region tilt. Southeast led 14-8 after one quarter and was ahead 32-18 at halftime before Adairsville turned up the defensive pressure and got back in the game. The Lady Tigers narrowed the margin to 42-41 after three quarters and completed the come-from-behind win by outscoring Southeast Whitfield 43-23 in the second half. McKenna Lentych led Southeast (0-4) and all scorers in the contest with 29 points. Lisette Gomez added nine for the Lady Raiders. Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 20 points. Southeast led 15-8 after one quarter and limited Adairsville to only one second quarter point. The Tigers outscored Southeast 17-8 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 13 points, but the Raiders held on for a 48-38 non-region victory. Zac Cole led all scorers in the game with 24 points for Southeast Whitfield (4-2). Savaun Henderson led the Tigers with 12 points. He was followed by Gaven Crunkelton and Derrick Simmons with seven each. Mason Boswell scored five points. Connor Crunkelton added four points and Danarous Johnson finished with two. The Cass girls and the Adairsville boys basketball teams both picked up victories Friday night in local high school basketball action. The Lady Colonels made easy work of visiting Chapel Hill to remain undefeated through four games while the Tigers edged one of the preseason favorites in Region 6-AAA. CASS GIRLS 62, CHAPEL HILL 27 The Lady Colonels remained unbeaten Friday night with a 62-27 non-region win over visiting Chapel Hill. Cass led 15-7 after one quarter and extended their lead to 39-16 by halftime. The Lady Colonels led 58-20 after three quarters. Sharia Wade led Cass with 16 points. Claire Davis and Payton Stoddard followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Alexis Ware added eight points. Londaisha Smith, Ariana Hames, and Brianna Stephenson contributed five points apiece. Malahne Walker led Chapel HIll with seven points. The Lady Panthers record stands at 2-2. Cass (4-0) begins play in Region 7-AAAAA Tuesday at home against Kell at 6 p.m. The Colonels -- who were not in action Friday -- will also host Kell Tuesday. HIRAM 51, WOODLAND GIRLS 30 The host Lady Hornets improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAAA with a 21-point win over visiting Woodland. The Lady Cats (0-4, 0-1) host Cartersville Saturday at 3 p.m. NORTH MURRAY 74, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 42 North Murray had two players — Plemons and Tipton — score in double figures with 21 and 13 points, respectively as the Mountaineers beat Adairsville by 32 points. North Murray improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Region 6-AAA action. Adairsville (1-3, 0-2) was led in scoring by Havyn Isaac’s eight points. Coriana McDaniel and Nakiyah Washington scored seven each for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville hosts Southeast Whitfield Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. in a non-region contest. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 47, NORTH MURRAY 44 The Adairsville boys knocked off one of the top contenders in Region 6-AAA Friday night at home defeating North Murray 47-44. The Tigers held a 24-21 edge at the intermission and pushed their lead to 40-30 after three periods before holding on for a three point victory. Chasien Buiker led the visiting Mountaineers with 14 points. Ladd McConkey added seven. Mason Boswell led Adairsville with 13 points. He was followed by four Tigers with six points each: Danarous Johnson, Gaven Crunkelton, Savaun Henderson, and Malachi Gardner. Courtney Slocum chipped in five points. Connor Crunkelton scored three and Diego Perez added two points. The loss was the first of the year for North Murray (4-1, 1-1) Adairsville (1-1, 1-1) hosts Southeast Whitfield in a non-region matchup Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 4:30 p.m. HIRAM 54, WOODLAND BOYS 35 Hiram improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAAA with their victory over the Wildcats. Woodland (2-3, 0-1) hosts Cartersville Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes earned a third trip to the state championship game in the past four years Friday night with a come-from-behind, 17-14 home semifinal victory over Marist. The Canes' defense rose up again on multiple key possessions as Cartersville survived a game the offense turned the ball over four times. Two of the four turnovers resulted in Marist taking a halftime lead, but a pair of defensive stops following turnovers made the difference for the Purple Hurricanes. Cartersville took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter on a 33-yard scoring strike from Tee Webb to Devonte Ross (photo). Oscar Hernandez, who made both extra points in the game for Cartersville, also booted a first quarter 29-yard field goal that gave the Canes a 3-0 lead. Despite the early advantage for Cartersville, Marist grabbed a 14-10 lead by halftime. Kyle Hamilton intercepted a tipped pass to set up a short field for Marist and Lincoln Parker capped the scoring drive with a 4-yard run with 1:20 remaining in the second quarter. A 15-yard strip sack, recovery, and return for a touchdown by the War Eagles’ Jalen Clark gave Marist a 14-10 lead with only 0:35 remaining in the first half. Following a scoreless third period, Cartersville took the lead for good with 7:51 remaining in the game. Webb (photo) found Ross again with a 38-yard touchdown pass for the Canes’ 17-14 lead. With the victory, the Cartersville senior class improved to 55-1 in their careers. Webb finished the night 11-for-24 for 200 yards and two touchdowns. He threw two interceptions and fumbled twice. Marcus Gary rushed 21 times for the Hurricanes for 80 yards. Ross had four receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson Lowe caught a pair of passes for 30 yards. Cartersville will face Blessed Trinity for the Class AAAA state championship Wednesday, December 12 at 4:30 p.m. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
